Great Stay!

5 on August 28, 2018

Our stay at The Speckled Hen Inn on August 7/8, 2018 was really terrific. Heather and Tom Shannon communicated frequently with us in advance of the trip to prepare us for our stay and in fact upon our request, provided a list of activities to consider while in the Madison area. The Inn was clean, quiet and very homey all the way down to the welcoming sheep and Lily the Llama in the pasture next to the Inn. The website is very user friendly and provides extensive background on the area. A small number of the guests had some very specific dietary needs and Heather and Tom happily prepared breakfast for these guests without missing a beat! Tom took the guests on a tour of the property and encouraged us to sample the fresh berries in their garden. We will definitely return and we encourage prospective guests to give them a try. Thank you Heather and Tom!

Wonderful Stay

We found this wonderful Inn on a spur of a moment when we were going to the area for a scheduled group hike. Luckily for us they had one room open. Both Heather and Tom are so heartwarming and sincere. The property is beyond relaxing with the sheep, llama, vegetable gardens, flowers and trails (to name a few). The five course breakfast was outstanding! It is so close to nature trails yet near the city of Madison for another aspect of life. We loved it and will return.

We were so pleased with our stay!

The Speckled Hen Inn B&B is without a doubt the best B&B we have ever stayed in! It is set in an area so secluded that you can't believe you are only a few minutes from downtown Madison and all the surrounding sites. The Inn has 5 large rooms/suites available and each is furnished beautifully with taste and style. Our suite had a huge comfortable queen canopy bed, a jacuzzi, a separate shower in our private bathroom and a lovely sitting room with TV/DVD player. We also had our own private balcony overlooking the woods and gardens. The common areas are filled with interesting books, games, puzzles, etc and on the first floor there is a large area suitable for a party. Outdoors there are paths to walk, gardens with both flowers and vegetables, pet sheep and a very cool Llama names Lily. There is plenty to explore on the 20 acres and also fresh fruits from the orchards, grape vines and berry bushes in season. Tom and Heather are delightful hosts who make you feel totally welcomed. The breakfasts are not only delicious, but creative and beautifully served with an emphasis on Farm to Table using the fruits and veggies grown right on the property. We stayed two nights and will definitely be going back again. Definitely 5 stars in our book!

A Weekend in the Country

5 on July 11, 2018

I found this little "nugget" of a B&B 10 minutes to the northeast of Madison, WI here on TripAdvisor weeks before this past pre-4th of July week holiday and booked 2 nights. We entered the 20 acres of property and came upon a well-maintained main guest house, a field of grazing sheep and llama in the pen, and even a chicken coop where we met Heather's husband Tom bringing in a pailful chicken eggs, Next came our entry to the public space which couldn't have been more pleasing with a puzzle board, coffee and tea service, a tank of water flavored with items from their garden and a cookie jar. Our stay in the spacious Badger Den, which overlooked the scenery, had an unattached (across the hall) bath, as the "only" room of 5 which did not have a private bath. Big deal! Heather and Tom couldn't have been more kind and pleasant, too. Over the course of 4 nights we were treated to a daily bountiful 4 course breakfast ending with their flavored ice of the day which one day were berries from their garden. Breakfast is served at 8:30am or 9:30am in separate dining rooms so enjoy meeting your fellow guests with a round of chat as breakfast is served. Heather has a way with her local "in house" ingredients (plants and herbs) and puts them into her various dishes, be it an apple tart; egg enchilada (with local eggs), to a flavorful quiche. All of the dishes served by Heather's husband and business partner Tom announcing with a bit of flair the dishes with each course served. Tom also makes suggestions for daily itineraries which including our visit to Wollersheim Winery and Distillery and came back with wine, and gin, and brandy. The Speckled Hen also had several wines available ($116 bucks tops) for purchase in the public den which included a 1916 Wisconsin Badger 635 page yearbook! Yep, this is Badger country, though all fans are welcome here. Came from LA for this summer holiday stay and would gladly do it again.

Highly Recommend!

Great place

We loved this Inn. It was near downtown Madison and was beautiful. The animals were fun to watch. It was the best breakfast I have ever had. The owners are kind, knowledgeable and friendly. I would love to go back.

Value and Character Rolled into One

5 on June 05, 2018

This was our fourth time at the Speckled Hen and the first since Tom and Heather took over in 2016. We had a little bit of trepidation: would the breakfast be as good as Bob and Pat's? Would the atmosphere be the same? The answer to both questions is a resounding yes! There are fresh-baked cookies and refreshments in the common area, along with board games, books, a home theater, and a selection of wines. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and impeccably clean. The hosts are friendly and engaging, but give you space to enjoy and explore the property. Best of all, you're treated to a different breakfast each morning, usually consisting of three courses and made with food from the Speckled Hen farm. You could pay $250 a night to stay in a chain motel with paper-thin walls and a boring continental breakfast, or for the same price you could book at the Speckled Hen Inn, which is quiet, clean, relaxing, and serves a sumptuous farm-to-table breakfast every morning. The choice is yours!

The Speckled Hen is THE best B&B

We love staying at the Speckled Hen and have been there many times. The rooms are comfortable and you will get a good night's sleep. The whole place is clean and the owners are committed to making your stay enjoyable. The food is so good and many foods are grown on site. The land is well maintained and in a safe area so you can take a quiet walk on the paths. We will be back! Pete Busalacchi

A Relaxing Weekend

5 on February 01, 2018

This past weekend was our 6th time enjoying the Speckled Hen Inn. It is my wife and my go-to bed and breakfast in the Madison area. Our room was spacious and the huge jacuzzi tub is always a highlight. The breakfasts were wonderful and we were able to enjoy some dishes we've never had at a bed & breakfast before. We will continue to stay at the Speckled Hen Inn in the future when seeking a relaxing weekend.

Signature Dish

Scones with dried cherries and white chocolate.
Guests love the scones from The Speckled Hen Inn. The drop scones served warm and moist from the oven, are filled with dried Door County cherries and bits of white chocolate. A sprinkle of natural sugar crystals on the top adds a sweet crunch.
