Lovely place to stay

5 on September 02, 2018

We stayed at the Mayhurst Inn as we were coming and going a 30 day tour in New England. What a lovely place to spend the night. Their historic home on 30+ acres is conveniently located off Rt 15 in Orange, VA. Jack and Pat North were the perfect hosts helping us settle in, hosting wine and cheese in the evening and providing us with a delicious breakfast to get us on our way. We hope to return soon.

No better place to stay

We recently spent two nights at the Mayhurst Inn. From the moment you see the Inn, you know that your stay is going to be spectacular. Jack and Pat could not have been nicer and bent over backwards to make sure we were happy. The breakfast was delicious and was more than enough food to take us through lunch. We chose their wine touring package and could not believe was an incredible bargain it was. We will definitely be back.

Delightful Stay

I had a hunch when I booked one night at the Mayhurst that it may not be enough and I was right! Jack and Pat were so welcoming and the wine and cheese evening was so relaxing that we did not really want it to end. We visited Monticello, Montpelier, Ash Lawn, and Poplar Forest and got as much history and information from Pat and Jack as we did at the other sites. They love their hosting and it shows. Breakfast was outstanding. All in all a charming and relaxng stay. We will be back!

Wonderful stay

The room was beautiful, the bed and air conditioning comfortable and the wifi more than adequate. The grounds are lovely, specially the lily pond. Most of all, conversation with Jack and Pat during the wine and cheese hour was stimulating as well as a reminder of all that we share in this wonderful USA.

Wonderful family host at Mayhurst

The Mayhurst Inn is run by a very friendly couple. The breakfast is home made by the couple. they take care of the guest like their family.

Wonderful in the Snow

4.6 on December 14, 2017

Stayed two nights in order to attend the Octagon Wine Dinner at the Barboursville Vineyards. It snowed the first day causing everyone but us to cancel their reservations. We had the entire house to ourselves and were waited on by Jack and Pat. Very quiet and comfortable as always. Good wine and interesting cheeses to include a Brie covered in nuts and cranberries in honey. Watched the Army Navy game and the Redskins game. Very relaxing and wonderful.

First Anniversary

My husband and I had a wonderful time celebrating our first anniversary. It was a relaxing environment and Jack and Pat were so friendly! Walking into the house is very welcoming and they make sure you have everything you need for your stay. Both mornings we were served a wonderful breakfast. We will be returning!

Outstanding...

It's five-star all the way, but B&B.com does not allow that selection. The Mayhurst Inn is simply special, and the hosts could not be better. Even James Madison would have enjoyed the visit!

Early 25th anniversary

4.8 on August 15, 2017

Hosts were very welcoming even when we arrived VERY early (noon instead of 2pm!). They invited us to leave our bags, and gave us discounted tickets to Montpelier. We had a lovely wine and cheese early in the evening, and a scrumptious breakfast the next morning. We came to Mayhurst because we'd been there 25 years ago right before we got married. Our stay this time was MUCH nicer than the last time! We will definitely try to come back!

Rooms & Rates

Madison Room

Savor this room as if you were the master and mistress of the plantation, Col. and Mrs. John Willis - they did. Their room is designed to honor John Willes' great uncle President James Madison and wife, Dolley. The ruby red wall covering was Dolley's choice for their bed drapes. The four poster king size bed is adjacent to the marble fireplace. A vintage claw foot tub with overhead shower and antique marble lavatory grace the bath. This spacious and very romantic room overlooks the pond.

Piedmont Suite

Today that gently sloping, rolling pastoral land at the base of the Blue Ridge is known as the Piedmont. Mayhurst was a 2800 acre Piedmont plantation. Our Piedmont Suite is two rooms divided by the bathroom, which has a shower over the tub. The romantic queen bedchamber with fireplace is on the quiet third floor. Relax in the sitting room on the wicker daybed, or a big comfy chair with the in-room cable TV and VCR/DVD player.

The School House

The original Mayhurst Plantation School House (c1837) is completely restored with all modern amenities. The perfect place for a romantic stay. School was NEVER like this. The Willis children likely sat through many a class in the "school house." Although they had the same fireplace, they didn't have central air and heat, a full bath, kitchen, and a queen size bed. Restorations were completed in September 2004. Guests can choose to enjoy all the amenities of the Manor House and enjoy the nights in the privacy and warmth of their own "class room" or the kitchen can be stocked for their own use. Virginia Wine or Champagne can be included to make a perfect stay even better.

Garden Room

Like a garden cottage of the 1930's in yellow, soft green and blue, this king bedded room with electric fireplace has its own terrace outside a private door. The exposed ceiling beams predate the home and were reused from a tobacco barn. The spacious bathroom and shower are lined in green slate. Three deep window seats add to the easy, comfortable feel of this popular room. The entire room and bathroom is ADA compliant featuring a large, no barrier, roll-in shower and heavy duty hardware.

Southern Charm Room

Looking as it might have in plantation days, this cheery blue and white room receives morning sun through a palladium window and overlooks the pond. "Stonewall" Jackson slept in this room on August 6, 1862. He would have enjoyed the double whirlpool tub in front of the wood burning fireplace and the king size bed!

The Italian Suite

Ahhh! The perfect room for romantic relaxation! Actually it's two rooms. A queen size handmade bed with 8 foot column posts sets the classic tone of this beautiful, luxurious room with shower bath.
