When I and my husband pulled into the drive, we noticed a manicured lawn and well kept Inn. Upon entering the Stonewall Jackson Inn, Wayne, the owner, greeted us with genuine enthusiasm. He was sincerely interested in our comfort. He gave us a tour of the Inn and informed us to alert him if we needed anything at all. We had booked the Sherman Room, and it was absolutely beautiful. Wayne made us aware of the locality of the Inn and nearby restaurants and other attractions. The next morning was indeed a "breakfast to remember". Aurilla and Alex are astonishing chefs! This will indeed be a place that we will visit again!

We went there for our anniversary weekend and we had a great time. The innkeepers were very friendly and accommodating and the room was comfortable and spacious. The breakfast was simply amazing! Beautiful presentation, tasty and filling. There are wineries nearby and activities such as canoeing and kayaking if you're into that. Overall, I would highly recommend the inn to anyone who wants to escape from the city for a weekend and have a relaxing time.

We were traveling to the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped in Harrisonburg Virginia. The welcome center helped us find this wonderful B & B . We were extremely pleased ! The owner and staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. This is a very clean, charming and well kept inn. The breakfast was fantastic ! Wish we could have stayed longer.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a wonderful place to stay in Harrisonburg, VA. The inn is quite lovely and is located just a short walk from Historic Downtown. The service is fabulous and breakfast is the perfect way to start to day!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write and post this review for us and for the folks that read reviews in order to find just the right place for their stay. You nailed two important things about us: Downtown location with easy access to the Arts & Culinary District and our fabulous "Breakfast to Remember" which was selected to be listed as being top 20 B&B breakfasts in the nation by "The Daily Meal" folks.

I don't always trust reviews I read online but this time they were right on target. The location is great. The house was unbelievably clean and the staff was so friendly! And yes, the breakfast of fresh fruit cup, Eggs Benedict made with local cured ham and hash was one to remember! Best Eggs Benedict my wife and I have ever had! And the owner Wayne is quite charming. We plan to return in a month or two.

We were looking for a new experience in a new town and this fit the bill to perfection. From the time I made the reservation the entire staff was responsive to every question and need. They offered to make dinner reservations and gave recommendations for local restaurants. They called early in the week to confirm our stay and solidified our dinner reservations. I ordered the wine trail package and it was ready and waiting when we arrived. Bob and Renee greeted us warmly and offered to bring in our bags. Bob called and confirmed our reservation and they both walked us through the house and went through the details of our room. We got the Chamberlain room which has a gas fireplace. The room was more spacious than I imagined and had everything we needed to make it a comfortable stay. The breakfasts are truly memorable and Bob paid attention to each guest and their particular desires. The entire staff treated us with affection and warmth and truly made us feel welcome and like family. They were so attentive to every detail. We cannot recommend this place highly enough and can't wait to visit again.

Service. The people who run and work at this Inn exemplify it very well. During an epic road trip our car failed. My sons and I were in a pickle. The care given to us while I decided our next action gave me strength and determination to continue. The rooms and beds and sitting areas were gracious and comfortable. Onsite Dining. Breakfast at the Stonewall Jackson is a delight that you will be happy to have experienced!

My husband and I happened upon this historic Bed and Breakfast in Harrisonburg, while searching online for a nice place to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. We were greeted warmly to this historic mansion beautifully decorated for the holidays by Bob and Renee. They gave us a tour of the house and showed us to our room, the Stonewall Jackson. One of our favorite breakfast items served the next morning was the croissant French toast. Delicious, Bob! If you are looking for a comfortable, warm and enjoyable place, we highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn!!

We stayed at this Bed and Breskfast recently and it was the best hotel/Inn that I've ever stayed at. It was just a beautiful place and all the rooms were lovely. The staff could not have been nicer and the breakfast was just wonderful. We all enjoyed it so much that we're planning another trip to Harrisonburg soon so that we can stay at this Inn.

After spending two nights at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, we found ourselves impressed with the level of professionalism demonstrated by the staff and the attention to detail applied to every facet of the experience. Bob, Renee, Brittany, and Iris were personable, welcoming, and treated us like family! The rooms were absolutely impeccable, warm, and gave us a sense of "being home" even though the decor is a mix of 19th century and contemporary style along with current technology. Both mornings, the breakfast served was delicious and presented as if a world-class chef was working in the kitchen. We also found the town of Harrisonburg, VA to be attractive, well maintained, and provides an extensive assortment of things to do either locally or within a reasonable drive.

We spent the night at the Stonewall Jackson Inn and found it to be very pleasant. The rooms are well decorated and comfortable. We got a good night's sleep and found the breakfast to be excellent. The Inn is within walking distance of great restaurants and the staff are very happy to provide you with directions and a discount card for dinner and other local attractions.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn far exceeded our expectations. Although we read good reviews, one never really knows what to expect until arrival. The Inn make a wonderful first impression, the Innkeepers were warm, friendly, and very helpful. Our room (JEB Stuart) was clean, well-appointed, and very comfortable. Breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious. The staff (and the Inn's owner) could not be more pleasant. The whole experience was delightful and we were sorry to spend only one night. We certainly will return.

We visited Harrisonburg for a quick get-a-way and to do some exploring. We chose The Stonewall Jackson Inn for it's proximity to the downtown area. We were not disappointed! The staff and service were way beyond any expectations we had - friendly and ready to see to any needs, full of information about the town. Room was very nice, breakfast was outstanding.

Driving from Maine to South Carolina, we were looking for something different from the normal Comfort Inn etc. I called from the car and was greeted by a friendly person who encouraged us to come and stay, they would definitely have a room for us. The Inn is a beautiful old restored home, with big bedrooms and comfy beds. Everyone was so friendly, and we felt quite at home as soon as we arrived. The breakfast was delicious as we sat looking our over the garden area behind the inn. All would enjoy this experience.

This B&B was suggested to us by a friend for its charm and unique character. We stayed in the Robert E Lee room, it was very warm and inviting. The antique decor was a very nice touch. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. It made us feel very special that they knew our names and greeted us as such everytime we were in their presence. Our reservation included the romance package. When we arrived to our room, there were two dozen roses and chocolate truffles awaiting our arrival, after dinner we had a couples massage in our room. This 2 hour massage was the best we have ever had! The "breakfast to remember" is exactly that. it was amazing sitting out on the deck enjoying the birds chirp while enjoying our breakfast! We particularly loved the apple chutney, it was devine. Everything was lovely, I will definitly recommend this B&B. Paul & Nicole

To say the owner and staff have left no stone unturned is an understatement. From the friendly welcome we received at arrival, help with our luggage, recommendations of area attractions and restaurants, to a fabulous breakfast in the morning, everything was perfect. Bob and Renee were so friendly and accommodating. We were so happy to meet Aurilia and Anthony before they left for a well deserved getaway and Wayne made sure all was perfect. We could not have planned a better 29th wedding anniversary getaway and would recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn again and again. Southern hospitality at its best.

We needed a chance to get away from the city, and we are so happy we chose the Stonewall Jackson Inn. The staff was warm and hospitable, the room was very comfortable, and the breakfasts were high quality and second-to-none. The location is great - walking distance to restaurants and nightlife, and an easy drive to the Shenandoah Valley for hiking and outdoor excursions. I highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn.

What a fabulous experience! Wayne and the Stonewall Jackson were charming and although my stay was brief, I greatly enjoyed my night at the Stonewall. Wayne gave personalized, excellent customer service--incidentally, I was in town to present on that very topic. He is also very involved in his community, from the library to local attractions and restaurants. My room was lovely and comfortable, and I only wish I could have stayed longer. Thank you to Wayne and his staff!

We stayed two evenings at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, in the Philip Sheridan room. Everything about our stay was perfect. The confirmation email was full of sightseeing opportunities and dining recommendations. I had requested a dozen roses in the room for my wife. Aurilia called the day before arrival to ask about the preferred colors. And, there were more than a dozen beautiful roses when we arrived. Anthony's breakfast creations were wonderful, a reflection of his culinary institute training. Dr. Engel was a gracious and warm host. The inn was spotless and very comfortable with many places inside and out to relax. The room provided a great place to relax and sleep. The inn is close to downtown and many restaurants, yet nature-related activities like hiking and fishing are a short drive away. We will visit again when in the area.

The staff at the SJI really made the lasting impression here. The welcome I received on arrival made me feel like being welcomed home by family. It was a bit surreal actually. The room I had was nice but having stayed in many B&B's over the years I can honestly say it didn't have anything special. The breakfast was touted as being a truely wonderful experience but again, I found it to be just so-so. Definitely not a breakfast to remember. I would stay here again because the staff was very nice and it is a convenient location. Just don't think it's quite 'all that' the description would have you believe.

I've stayed here twice now, both times they've been very accommodating of our needs. This last time, Coming in late, breakfast earlier than usual, and later than usual checkout. All a "no-problem" ask for them. Rooms are nice, walk-able to downtown, considering how close it is to rt. 33 its very quiet. Our rooms have been on the front of the house both times, very quiet at night.

My husband and I decided to take a mini honeymoon in the Shenandoah before returning to our grueling federal government schedule. What a gem this place was! Our new-found friends, the innkeepers, Paul and Candice were the most attentive, sweet, and knowledgeable people. Dr. Wayne Engle, the owner, is a marvel among men. You'll understand when you meet him! And can I just say BREAKFAST!!!?? Absolutely incredible. I have traveled the world, and eaten in the street stalls of Southeast Asia to the world renowned restaurants of Paris, Tuscany, Dubai, Tokyo, and the Hague and Paul's eggs Benedict tops most of them. We also got massages and the wine and cheese package. Great wine...good cheese. What we really loved about this place, is that you can do as much or as little as you want to. We went horseback riding at the Star B Stables, great fun! Had dinner at Clementine’s, L'Italia, and the Chop House, all very good. We even sat out for an evening and had cigars and wine out on the patio with Paul, Candice, and their new intern. THAT'S how much we loved them! There is also a delightful new addition to downtown Harrisonburg that my husband and I were thrilled to patron. Jimmy Madison's .....a bourbon bar. That's right....for two bourbon connoisseurs, it doesn't get much better than that. The highlight of our trip was our wine tasting tour. We visited Barrenridge, Bluestone, and Cross Keys. All lovely. FANTASTIC wine. We hired a town car to drive us on the wine tour which Paul was delighted to do for us. If you decide to do the same...ask for Delila. She was our driver, and she was phenomenal. Our room was always clean and freshened up. We were always able to find someone if we needed something, and we were treated like family from the second we walked through the door. We will be counting the days here in Northern VA until we are able to go back, as we plan to make this a regular getaway spot. We couldn't have picked a better place to stay!

My husband and I went to the Stonewall Jackson Inn for a long weekend away to celebrate our anniversary. The Inn was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and friendly. We really enjoyed mornings on the back deck eating our breakfast. The sunrise was amazing to watch! The location of the Inn is perfect. We were able to enjoy the great restaurants in downtown Harrisonburg, as well as civil war battlefields, Cross Key winery and Grand Caverns all within 30 minutes. Since we were there near Halloween time, we also stopped in on several haunted activities, including a walking tour through downtown Harrisonburg to hear ghost stories about some of the old buildings. It was so much fun

Wanting to split our usual 8 hour northern trip in half, my husband found the Stonewall Jackson Inn on line and decided it was time to try a B & B. After phoning and talking with Cassandra, he was impressed by her friendliness, descriptions and assurances of the spectacular visit we would experience. She was absolutely correct! From the warm welcome, tour of premises and property, we were ensconced in the lovely and very comfortable Belle Boye room. Central air control in our room was superb, all amenities in room were perfect. The staff in the morning, while preparing a delicious and unique meal, made us feel as if we were old friends! We enjoyed our experience so much that we stopped again one week later on our way back south.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us - enough so to stop and stay with us on your way back! We are very lucky to have Kass - so genuinely welcoming and knowledgeable about the inn and the area, as well. Our staff strives to make sure you have a welcoming, memorable experience, and know that we have succeeded when you feel like our friends! Please join our family again, soon to enjoy our hospitality and wonderful amenities!

My husband and I spent the weekend at this charming inn. We love B&B's, and this was the 24th inn that we have stayed in. We had a wonderful time touring vineyards, and tasting wine. We stayed in the Joshua Chamberlain room on the first floor. The room was lovely, and very comfortable. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The inn is located near several vineyards, a lavender farm, and wonderful restaurants. Breakfast on the back porch was really something special. We had croissant french toast with bacon and a fruit parfait the first morning, and fluffy vegetable omelets, bacon, hash browns, with homemade sausage gravy on biscuits the second day, along with a fruit parfait, and delicious coffee. I will say that the breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. Thank you Wayne, Jonathan and Julie for your hospitality. You have a magic touch! We are looking forward to visiting again! Geoff and Kim
Thank you for taking the time to write your wonderful review of our inn after your recent wine tasting weekend! We're so happy that you enjoyed our hospitality, comfortable accommodations and the staff's assistance to point you in the right direction for the wineries and restaurants. And not to mention, the Lavender Farm - what a great find, and hope you are enjoying your scents you took home. The breakfast on the deck is the perfect way to start your day, and so glad you enjoyed Paul's famous biscuits and signature sausage gravy - decadent, but delicious! We hope that you will give us the opportunity again soon to provide you with another memorable experience.

My wife recently treated me to a surprise birthday "getaway" weekend at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, in historic Harrisonburg Virginia, smack dab in the middle of the beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley. Wayne, our Innkeeper, and his professional and friendly staff, Jonathan and Cassandra, made the weekend wonderful. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a lovingly restored late victorian mansion and the rooms are gorgeous (we stayed in the Stonewall Suite). Based on the staff's suggestion, we dined at the wonderful "Chop and Grill", where not only was the food great but our server explained that most of the selections were locally grown and in season foods. In the morning, we were treated to Eggs Benedict d'Wayne..Mmmmm on the sunny veranda. My wife Rochelle enjoyed our bedding so much we ended up purchasing a set of the sheets! (the best I've ever slept on) A delightful stay with delightful folks in a charming and historic B&B.
Let me take this opportunity to wish you a belated birthday! What a wonderful way to spend your special day, and don't we all LOVE surprises, especially when it is something as wonderful as a stay at our inn!! I think I speak for all the staff, including Wayne, that we are so fortunate to have such a beautiful property to share with our guests, and especially fortunate to have Jonathan and Cassandra to take care of all their needs. Our location within a short walk to Historic Downtown with so many great restaurants to chose from, not to mention unique shops, add up to the perfect getaway. Thank you for being our guests, and we wish you many peaceful, restful slumbers on your new sheets! Hope to see you again, soon!

We had a wonderful night stay at the Inn. The staff warmly welcomed us and took care of all our needs. I was unable to make this website' stars work correctly, but it was a 5 star stay in every respect for a B and B. we stayed upstairs in the Jeb Stewart room and it was very quiet. The breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented.
Thank you for expressing your pleasure regarding your stay with us. It is our pleasure to know that you felt warmly welcomed by our staff - complete with heartfelt hugs! We believe that as soon as you enter the inn, you become one of our extended family, and we do our best to ensure your stay is special and memorable - what better way than to prepare "a breakfast to remember" for you to enjoy. We hope that you will be our guest again, and possibly stay with us for more than just one night!

College drop-off for our daughter to JMU coincided with our 29th wedding anniversary so we decided to step it up a notch from the usual Holiday Inn Express. The Inn was a delight. We felt like close friends with the innkeeper from the moment we arrived. We stayed in the J.E.B. Stewart room and had the most comfortable bed ever. Each room has their own temperature control which is a plus. All of the standard hotel amenities were included (iron/ironing board, hair dryer, soaps and shampoos). The only thing that made me want to get out of bed were the smells wafting from the kitchen. Our breakfast was served on the beautiful outdoor deck. We cannot think of one thing that could have been changed to make our visit any better. Thank you Wayne, Johnny, Kass and Jonathan.
So glad you were able to celebrate your special day with us! Our staff's mission is to make you feel genuinely welcomed like an old friend, and to make your stay the most comfortable and relaxing you could ask for. We strive to prepare and serve "a breakfast to remember", using the freshest local ingredients available - the most important ingredient being the warmth of our staff. We hope that you will consider spending your next anniversary with us for another memorable experience!

We have stayed at many B&B Inns and some measure up and some less so. In the case of the Stonewall Jackson Inn, it was a complete pleasure. The accommodations were clean, the service was pleasant and cheerful, and breakfast was real food. Would we pay a return visit ... you bet.
Thank you for letting us know that we surpassed your expectations of a B&B during your recent stay. Our mission is to provide a genuinely warm welcome and consider you family as soon as you arrive. Our staff works very hard to ensure a high standard of cleanliness and comfort, along with a delicious home-cooked breakfast. We very much look forward to having you as our guest again to enjoy our heartfeld hospitality and beautiful inn.

The inn is quaint with lots of nooks indoors and out for private conversations and relaxation. Breakfast is served on the terrace under awnings and the innkeepers leave water and sodas in a refrigerator for guests. The inn keepers were kind and made us feel very welcome. We were able to walk to downtown restaurants and sites. Incidentally, I am not a person who appreciates quilts, but the Quilt Museum in downtown Harrisonburg is absolutely amazing if you appreciate art. The quilts on display demonstrate the ability to create images and moods using a mosaic of tiny scraps of cloth and even smaller stitches holding it all together. The farmer's market next door is wonderful too. We also stopped by a nearby Lavender Farm (try the ice cream!) and went to the American Shakespeare theatre in nearby Staunton, which was about a 30 minute drive. Beautiful, scenic mountain area with plenty to do for a romantic or family/friend bonding weekend.
Thank you for letting us know how much you enjoyed your stay with us, along with so many of the attractions Harrisonburg has to offer. It sounds like you had a very busy couple of days creating so many special memories, and including us in those. We strive to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for our guests, along with a fabulous home-made breakfast to enjoy on our sunny deck, or our cozy "Paradise Cafe". We hope you will join us again to enjoy some relaxation and to experience even more of the many things the area has to offer.

Even before we got to the Stonewall Jackson Inn, the innkeepers sent us the most welcoming email I've ever gotten from any business. They assisted us in making dinner reservations for our anniversary before we came to town. Once we arrived, they were great about showing us directions around town and making suggestions. The room was very nice. Highlights: incredibly comfortable bedding, a great view of the mountains in the distance, pretty furniture, and lots of Civil War/local history books. There are a couple of hammocks on the property and a great veranda covered with climbing vines & twinkling lights. Easy walking distance to the town. Breakfast was so good I'm still thinking about it a couple of weeks later! The innkeepers were extremely personable and kind throughout our stay and check out was a breeze. It beats a chain hotel any day of the week and we'll definitely return the next time we're in the area.

My husband surprised me with an anniversary get-away to historic Harrisonburg. The accommodations at the Inn were superb, and the inn keepers , Steve & Mimi were so friendly, making us feel so "at home". Our room was very nice, the bed being one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Jonathan's breakfasts (served on side patio) were superb. Meeting Wayne was a delight too. Everything about our stay was truly memorable; I would love to return.

Travelling from Canada to a golf event in Richmond we decided to stay overnight at this welcoming historic downtown home . Jonathan met us in the driveway to help with luggage, get us checked in and oriented and pointed in the right direction for an evening dinning experience. Breakfast on the back porch was superb. Everything about our accommodation and experience was first class. We would definitely return. Room Tip: Large room on main floor with private entrance was excellent.

Seriously, this was the most comfortable bed that either of us have ever slept in. Our stay was short and we got in late, but everything about the Stonewall Jackson Inn felt warm, welcoming, and we immediately felt right at home. I called the morning of and talked to one of the guys on the phone about our late arrival, when we got there there was a note on the door with my name and instructions on how to find our room and where to meet them for breakfast in the morning. Breakfast was delicious and everyone at the Inn was truly welcoming and the stay was a delight. I only wish we had reason to stay longer.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn Bed & Breakfast and we couldn't have been happier with everything. Mimi and Steve were very helpful in checking us in, they gave a lot of great recommendations for places to visit and things to do, and were always smiling when we would come by. Breakfast was one of the best I've had in a very long time - everything cooked perfectly, serve at the proper temperature and time. Got to meet Wayne, who had a great time just conversing with the guests in the morning, which was wonderful to see. All the staff (Mimi, Steve, Wayne & John) were always smiling, asking if we needed help and just generally making us feel welcome and appreciated. We will be back again!

This was easily the best B&B experience I have ever had. My girlfriend and I we're looking for a quick weekend B&B getaway and could not have been more happy with our decision. Beautiful, historic, renovated house that is very comfortable and is an easy walk to the historic downtown section of Harrisonburg. Cozy, large yard with ample yard chairs and hammocks. The staff is highly attentive, accessible, and very friendly. Both of the breakfasts we had we're delicious and were ready within minutes of sitting down. We look forward to returning many, many times!

Steve & Mimi - thanks for your gracious Southern hospitality while we stayed at Stonewall Jackson Inn. You two sure know how to spoil your guests! Wayne - you've done a marvelous job recreating the ambiance and warmth of a historic bed & breakfast that touts artifacts and artwork from the period, exhibited in this gorgeous 19th century mansion. We thoroughly enjoyed spending the night in the George Pickett Room. Our stay was comfortable and quiet, Your inn's proximity to the Historic downtown area was a welcomed bonus. We'll definitely be returning soon! Deb & Tom McCarragher

When I got married at Bluestone Vineyards in Bridgewater, VA I wanted to stay somewhere quaint, cozy, and beautiful the night before and after our wedding. I guess I wasn't the typical bride who wanted an elaborate honeymoon suite but instead somewhere like a B&B. I really loved staying at the Stonewall Jackson Inn with David. We were among the younger guests, but it was a welcoming atmosphere in a gorgeous historic house that anyone would enjoy. Wayne, as mentioned in other reviews, is a very kind and helpful host with a great sense of humor. He really defines the place! Our room was huge and decorated in a way that complimented the style of the house. The breakfast the morning before our wedding was delicious! It was Eggs Benedict, fruit salad, bacon, fresh coffee, and some other things I'm forgetting. All of the staff at this inn are friendly and gracious. I would highly recommend this inn!

It was late and a spur of the moment decision, led us to your B&B driveway. We love Virginia, and came down from Baltimore to celebrate my birthday. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and after given a tour of the house, the "cozy romantic" like atmosphere, we immediately knew this was the right place to stay for the night. The magnificance plantation feel of the place, and historical artifacts, and most of all we were treated like "family". We look forward to returning and highly recommend "The Stonewall Jackson Inn" as the perfect B&B.

folks, do yourselves a favor and book a stay in this delightfully genteel historical edifice. I could not find a single thing to be critical about. The room was beautiful, the staff was unbelievably kind and generous with their assistance and the breakfast was to die for. I will remember my experience forever, and I will make any excuse I can to go back. You just will not find a more interesting and comfortable place to spend the night. I particularly enjoyed the comfortable homey furnishings and the feeling that the staff gave me that my enjoyment and relaxation was their absolute priority. I only gave four stars on 1 category because well....I wanted this review to be believable and genuine and realistic....all around a stunningly marvelous time

My family traveled from NJ down to Harrisonburg to spend Christmas eve with our daughter, who is a JMU student. Our stay at the Inn was very enjoyable. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find that our room was upgraded. The Inn staff found a restaurant that was open on Xmas eve and booked a reservation for us at the Capital Ale House. On Christmas morning, we opened our gifts in the cozy sitting room that was right next to our bedroom. After our gift exchange, a delicious breakfast was made by Wayne, our innkeeper. The meal was enjoyed by all of us and we even stayed in our Christmas PJ's while we dined. This was a very nice B&B to stay at... nice home and bedroom plus pleasant and helpful staff.

My wife and I have visited a fair number of B&B's and the Stonewall Jackson is at the top of our list when it comes to service, value and dining. If you are looking for a luxurious hot tub and a 60 inch TV in your room then this is not the place for you. If; however, you are interested in exceptional breakfasts and exceptional service than this is where you need to stay. Wayne prepares an outstanding breakfast with a unique twist on Eggs Benedict that is simply outstanding. Additional plus: Wayne appears to know the owner of every quality restaurant in Harrisonburg and makes not only great recommendations but provides means for discounts and improved service. I don't know when we will be back in Harrisonburg; but, when we do go back we will be staying here again.

We love to stay at B&B's whenever we travel. The Stonewall Jackson Inn did not disappoint us in any way! We had a lovely room that was quiet and comfortable. Innkeeper Dr. Wayne was recouping from an illness and his assistant Innkeeper, Jonathan, was incredible! We were treated like family. We were in Harrisonburg to attend our daughter's graduation. If we had extra time, we would have certainly opted for more time at this quaint Inn. Breakfast was fresh fruit and french toast with eggs and bacon. Well prepared and we actually were able to have this in our room as we were running late for the Graduation ceremony. If you are traveling to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, please. do yourself a favor and book with Stonewall Jackson Inn!

We stay at B&B's everywhere we go. We travel mainly abroad but also enjoy domestic vacations and always seek out local Bed & breakfasts. Stonewall Jackson's Assistant Innkeeper, Jonathan, is heads above any Innkeeper anywhere! He welcomes you as if you are family. The Inn itself is beautifully appointed. The room we had was spacious, well-heated and quiet. The breakfast was excellent. Our trip was to attend the graduation of our daughter from JMU in Harrisonburg. We had friends and family coming as well and the weather was inclement. Jonathan extended a warm welcome to them and allowed them to park on the grounds during the morning ceremony in spite of the fact that there was a "full house". We recommend this little haven and would most definitely stay there again. Congratulations to Innkeeper Dr Wayne Engle in employing a highly competent Assistant along with his wife!

My husband and I had a wonderful 2 night stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn and Bed and Breakfast. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary. Jonathan, the Innkeepe, made our visit special from the delicious breakfasts he prepared to his recommendations of restaurants and sights to see. The historic home is lovely and our room was quiet and comfortable.

This was our first B&B and we were pleasantly surprised. I instantly felt a sense of comfort and safety. I liked having access to the kitchen in the evening so I could make us a cup of tea and take it back to our room. After a few days of hours in the car and a couple of restless nights, the staff went way beyond helpful and actually switched furniture from another room which gave me my best night of sleep on our trip. They really did make sure we had everything we wanted. When looking for a restaurant for our anniversary dinner that night we were referred to Clementine's and was given a coupon for free dessert. We had a lovely dinner and excellent food. The staff at Stonewall Jackson Inn is very knowledgeable about the area. We are thinking that we might go back for our 50th anniversary in a few years. The next morning when we had breakfast we were wowed by the fabulous breakfast of eggs benedict and some heavenly hash. EXCELLENT! If possible I would rank service and dining a 10 and add a category for caring and rank it a 10 also. Thank you all so much! Sharon
We just love having first timers stay with us - to show them a better way to stay. Thank you for making your home here for a little while and for sharing your experience. We work hard to make ourselves and our home accessible to our guests. It is important to us that you are comfortable and cared for. We are thrilled you let us in on your special celebration - Happy Anniversary! We are blessed to have wonderful dining partners within minutes of our front door who can accommodate us. We're so glad you could take advantage. And of course our "Night's Delight" wouldn't be complete without our "Breakfast to Remember"! Thank you for being such gracious guests - we give you both 10s! Come back and see us again soon for another stress busting weekend ;).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Jonathan greeted us by name and welcomed us. Wayne gave us details about the Inn and Jonathan added it's history. Our room was very comfortable, especially the bed as it had a memory foam mattress. We told them that we were visiting our granddaughters at JMU and they told us to invite them for breakfast as they would like to meet them. As for breakfast it was scrumptious. We were served on the porch which was a delight. We would highly recommend their hospitality and service. Sue & C.G.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. From our initial email to walking through the front door for the first time, we were treated like family. We recently traveled to Harrisburg to visit our son, niece & nephew at JMU and stayed in the Inn for two nights. Not one for hotels, we immediately chose Stonewall Jackson Inn and we're glad we did. Wayne and Jonathan could not have been more welcoming and friendly. Our visit was enhanced by their recommendation of the Local Chop House for dinner - excellent service and food. Perhaps, one of our most memorable dining experiences ever with our son - catching up with his new adventures! Never felt rushed through our meal and treated again with top notch service! Meal was 5 star! The Inn was quiet and peaceful. They had a full house, but we were made to feel special. We included our son, niece & boyfriend and nephew to breakfast at the Inn and they loved it too! Wayne & Jonathan took special interest stopping to talk to the teens each morning. We now consider the Innkeepers our friends and will treat ourselves to their beautiful Inn every time we visit our son! My idea of good customer service is to always give folks more than they expect - Wayne & Jonathan accomplished just that! Thank you! Keep the light on for us - we'll see you in the spring!
We will leave the light on for you our new friends. No secret, we enjoyed hosting and your family. Thanks for taking the time to tell others about our stay here with us....it is a better way to stay (than a hotel/motel)!!!

My wife and I were staying in Harrisonburg for a few days to visit her alma mater James Madison University and to see some friends in the area. I was looking for a Bed and Breakfast to stay at, for a change of pace, and I have always had a soft spot for B&B’s since first staying in one in England years ago. The Stonewall Jackson Inn was a wonderful experience. The accommodations were very comfortable, the surroundings were peaceful and quiet, and the breakfast was worth the trip all on its own. For dinner, there are several great restaurants to go to in downtown Harrisonburg, as recommended by Jonathan at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn to others. Wayne, Jonathan and Julie could not have been more accommodating and helpful, and they are what make this place so wonderful to visit.
Well Golly - its notes like these that keep us going! You are both very generous - thank you for taking the time to put some words down about your stay. We are thrilled your experience was "WONDERFUL"! As we are located between the interstate and the historic downtown district we spend a lot of time and effort making the surroundings as comfortable as possible. Our two acre lot reflects the beauty of the valley and we are very fortunate to offer breakfast outside during the warmer months. It is always lovely hosting JMU folks - we bleed purple too! We look forward to having you both back on the ole stomping grounds soon!

My husband booked us at Stonewall for our anniversary. I was so impressed with the quality of service. The staff seemed to go out their way to accommodate us. I loved it so much that I asked my husband to book an additional night. Oh and the breakfast was divine. The eggs benedict was to die for. To Wayne and Jonathan, we will definitely be back. The Tinsleys
What a treat seeing you both on your anniversary! It was such a lovely compliment having you stay an additional evening to celebrate with us. It was truly our pleasure to accommodate you both. Thank you for highlighting our breakfast - one of the signatures here. It is ever-so nice to hear positive feedback from our guests - and what a gift you gave us by sharing it with others as well - thank you! We know we will see you again, don't make us wait too long!

My girlfriends and I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn for a bachelorette party and enjoyed every minute of it! The Girls' Getaway package was a perfect addition that made the weekend relaxing. Moreover, Wayne, the owner, was a fabulous chef and very helpful when we were setting up and booking our transportation to local wineries!
We are really excited about your stay during this time celebration. Thank you for letting us share in it with you - and for taking the time to write a little something about your experience. We are delighted you loved the "Girls Getaway" addition. We have worked tirelessly to provide different options for our guests that will add to their experience here. It is gratifying to see our efforts hit the 5 star rating! Thank you for being wonderful guests. In our constant aim to make every guest’s experience with us more memorable we are curious about the one mark down in your review. We are doing everything in our power to hit all 5 stars and any feedback you have is such a gift to us - thank you. We are looking forward to another celebration with you all. Come back and see us soon.

Our first b&b experience, and they couldn't have made it better for us. The room was gorgeous, the location was convenient, and staff were friendly and helpful, and the food... Out of this world! If you have a reason to be in Harrisonburg ( or even I you don't) come and stay here, you will have no regrets.
What's not to love about your review? THANK YOU for the five stars! We'd love to have you back anytime, and would love the opportunity to whip you up some of our legendary eggs benedict once more. We hope you were able to enjoy it out on patio while you were here - the morning glories have recently bloomed and it's just beautiful right now. Come back and see us soon - we'll be saving your room for you!

My husband and I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn after dropping our daughter off at her first week-long camp away from home. The Inn was the perfect setting for the first getaway we've had in 9 years (without a child in tow). Jonathan, Julie and Wayne are truly genuine in their desire to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable. We felt both the minute we arrived. We stayed in the Stonewall Jackson Suite, which is well worth the slightly higher, but still very reasonable price. This was our first visit to Harrisonburg so Jonathan"s and Julie's recommendations of restaurants and offer to make reservations were much appreciated. Breakfast the next morning was delicious! I have already recommended the Inn to friends and look forward to staying there again after camp drop-off next summer, if not sooner!
Thanks so much for taking the time to post your review! It brings us joy to hear when your stay lives up to your expectations - and when we're able to provide the location for a special and relaxing getaway. It's a real treat to be an Innkeeper, and guests like you make our lives easy. You folks did it up right in the Stonewall Jackson Suite - our "master suite," guests enjoy the king bed, spacious room, unique antique settings, and mini bar area. It's just the place to take a cleansing breath and step away from a crazy schedule for a while. So glad you took the opportunity to enjoy it. The restaurants downtown are a special treat, too - with over 30 (really good!) places to choose from, it can be a challenge to make the perfect recommendation, but there are a good handful where you'll find something for everyone. We love being able to share the highlights of our downtown community - but there's never enough time to experience it all! Thanks so much for recommending us to your friends, and we hope to see you back here with us soon, camp drop-off or no.

We absolutely love the Stonewall Jackson Inn! We stay there every trip to JMU. The staff, the rooms and especially the breakfast are the best! It’s a 7-hour trip from Connecticut, so we just keep thinking of the destination that awaits us in Harrisonburg. Dr. Wayne couldn’t be more accommodating, and he can’t hide the fact that looks forward to every single guest arrival. It doesn’t get any better than that!
What a lovely member of our growing Stonewall Jackson Family. Thank you for writing this review. We feel very fortunate to be able to host a number of JMU students and their families. We are ideally located minutes from campus and having a member of the faculty on hand doesn't hurt either. Professor Emeritus Wayne does indeed look forward welcoming each person who graces our doorstep. We look forward to accommodating you for many years to come!

We stayed overnight at the Stonewall Jackson Inn on our way from Nashville to Ithaca. We'd had a long drive and Julie and Wayne made us feel very welcome. Julie gave us a few pointers about what we might do for the afternoon and she also recommended restaurants in Harrisonburg. Our room was very comfortable, just what we were looking for after a long day on the road. Breakfast, cooked by Wayne and served outside on a pleasant covered deck, was the best we'd had all week. We were sorry to be on our way so quickly -- next time we'll certainly stay longer.
Do come back and extend your stay! There is SO much to do around here, from vineyards, to hiking, to scenic drives, to the lavender farm, to exploring our Historic Downtown area. The restaurants here are really top-notch and are alone worth staying for a dinner or two. Glad you saved room for breakfast! We really enjoy serving it outdoors this time of year - our guests report that it makes it feel so special. Next time you're hitting the highway, take a little detour and come stay with us awhile... we'll make sure to order up another "Night's Delight & Breakfast to Remember" for you. Thanks for the review!

Needing a day of rest off the Appalachian Trail, especially on a rainy day, I found the Stonewall Jackson a perfect getaway. Julie and Jonathan made sure we had everything we needed and then I had the best shower and sleep I've had in a while. I would LOVE to have that bed as my own. Jonathan made us an amazing breakfast and Wayne was a pleasure to meet. Can't wait to get back down there when my trip is over!
Thanks so much for posting this review. It was lovely getting to host a member of that elite group of travelers who brave the ever exhilarating Appalachian trail every year! As for the bed, it's all yours as part of your stay - a roof, comfortable bed, hot shower and a breakfast to hike 3000 miles for! Not to mention we really like talking to you! Hopefully you will hike back into our lives really soon.

We've stayed in lots of B&Bs, but we have found a new favorite in the Stonewal Jackson Inn!!! The Inn is lovely and comfortable and the food is fantastic, but the real draw is the hospitality! Wayne is a gem!! We wanted to pack him up and bring him home with us! Jonathan made us feel likekone of the family. We will definitely be back again and again!!

It was such a pleasure staying at the Stonewall Jackson meeting old family friends for a reunion of sorts. The Inn is accommodating, clean, and comfortable, but the warm and family like atmosphere was felt and appreciated from the moment we pulled into the property. We are already planning a trip back in the fall and hope to stay there again. Thank you Jonathan and Wayne for a great time!
Thanks for taking the time to write some feedback from your stay. It's gratifying to see guests enjoying their time with us and new friends already planning a return visit. Our goal has been to make this home accommodating to a variety of guests. Whether you are meeting the guys on a local biking/hiking/fishing trip, or having a girl's night out, or reuniting with old friends, or celebrating that special occasion we want to be able to serve. We can't wait to say hello again and a very welcome return.

Please getaway soon and we'll look forward to the day you visit our home again.

Spent one very restful night at Stonewall Jackson B&B, Harrisonburg, VA. I have been to many B&B's and this one is at the top of my favorite list. Johnathan greeted us as we came in and we found him to be the most personable young man who immediately made us feel right at home. Our breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented. Everything about this B&B was outstanding.
What a wonderful compliment, we made the top of the B&B favorites list! And from an experienced traveler no less! Thank you for taking the time to write a few words about your experience, we sure do appreciate it. We pride ourselves on providing a personal experience for every guest who graces our home. We want you to feel welcome. Our gourmet breakfasts, comfortable rooms, and well kept common areas provide what we hope is a home away from home experience. We are just delighted you enjoyed you time here. Please come back and see us again soon!

Although my wife and I were half sick, we still very much enjoyed our 22nd anniversary at Stonewall Jackson (mid May). The B&B itself (and our room) was beautifully laid out and decorated. The beds were comfortable (my wife said she hadn't slept that well in a long time), and the rooms had interesting books to browse in the realms of history and philosophy/psychology. It was raining, so we drove 5 minutes to the historic downtown area and ate at Clementine's, a uniquely decorated restaurant/bar with live music in the evenings. (I use "unique" as a complement - the walls were covered with interesting "found art" and splashes of color.) The night was quiet aside from the sounds of cars whooshing by. We had our windows open. My wife slept well though I, a light sleeper, had to use ear plugs. Breakfast was what one should expect at a good B&B: good food, upscale country setting, and good rapport with the wait staff. I could have lounged there much longer sipping tea, conversing about psychology (the owner is a James Madison professor), and reading the newspaper (provided), but "had" to go wine tasting. Lastly, Stonewall Jackson B&B was much more reasonably priced than most others I saw in the Charlottesville/Harrisonburg area. - Sincerely, Doug & Holly
A fine thank you for this review. Its so helpful to all our guests to get a feel for the home we have created and others experiences can offer just that. Thank you for mentioning the comfortable beds and for you appreciation of the small details (interesting reading materials) we work hard to make available to our guests. I was sorry to read about your difficulty with noises at night. Our unique location only minutes from downtown faces the main street into historic Harrisonburg. I wish we known beforehand and been able to suggest one of our other room options. During your next visit I would recommend our Stuart and Pickett rooms located at the back of the house. Their location offers a very quiet atmosphere with windows overlooking our acre of property complete with the original barn from the 1800s. And as you were able to research our competitive rates make all our room choices very attractive. I know we enjoyed conversing with you over breakfast as much as you did. There is little that can compare, though a trip through the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah in the spring on your way to visit and taste our outstanding vineyards is not a bad start :). We look forward to many more wining and dining experiences with you and another opportunity to outdo ourselves and maybe tick off all those stars. Come back and see us soon.

We chose to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B for our first year anniversary, and it couldn’t have been a better pick! The staff was exceedingly wonderful, and even surprised us with cupcakes to celebrate. They also helped my husband surprise me with two dozen roses in our room one night. The staff had great suggestions on dinner options and things to do in the area. The breakfasts were amazing! The best breakfasts we’ve had in a very long time. The rooms were also cozy and comfortable. We will definitely be coming back to the Stonewall Jackson; I have a feeling this is the first of many visits.
Your first celebration of marriage and we got to be part of it! Surprise! We feel very honored to have hosted you in our home during such a special time. Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. It's lovely to share it with you. We put a lot of energy into creating a welcoming environment guests can enjoy and feel at home in. Whether by offering an introduction into the local scene or spending time creating a spotless environment or adding small touches to cozy up the rooms or pulling out all the stops and baking special cupcakes, we enjoy the challenge. We're so happy you enjoyed our signature breakfasts! You can request them again on your next visit (you wont be the first) which will be soon and often we hope :).

The recommendations from the staff for food, tours, etc. were great, and they made us feel like our visit was the best thing that happened to them - truly exceptional and sincere service. If you're visiting JMU, anywhere nearby, or just passing through, this place will make your trip much more relaxing and enjoyable.
I want to thank you for sharing a little about your experience with us! We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and could take advantage of our knowledgeable concierge service. Thank you for spending some time recounting your experience! You gave us the best compliment we could get, a "home away from home!" We love opening up our doors and providing our guests with a peaceful environment. We're glad you could take advantage of our comfortable clean beds for a great night's sleep. Making our signature breakfasts, which have long been a guest favorite, makes me smile! We are glad you didn't miss the chance to stop over and we hope to see you again soon!

My boyfriend and I stayed here one night during a weekend getaway into the Shenandoah. Our friendly hosts greeted us at the door, and innkeeper Wayne came downstairs to say hello, too. Our room was clean and comfortable, and we had a delicious breakfast of eggs benedict. The staff threw in some nice Valentine's treats—cake pops that we could snack on when we arrived, and a tasty punch with our breakfast. Also a great value price compared with other inns in we considered, especially for a holiday weekend (plus, it was nice that we weren't required to stay two nights and could be flexible.) Hope to make it back here someday.
What a delight having you as our guests this Valentine’s weekend. We are thrilled that you were able to unwind and enjoy our home for a time. Thank you for taking the time to write and share a little about your experience. It was fun reading about the cake pops in the review. We had so much fun making them and seeing the smiles on people’s faces was just perfect! The variety of people who wander through our doors add so much life to our home – we really relish the opportunity to provide personal service. We are constantly striving to learn from our guests and provide a comfortable environment that is clean, friendly and inviting. It’s gratifying to know our efforts are being enjoyed. We are delighted to add you to our growing family and we look forward to seeing you again soon

The rooms at the historic Stonewall Jackson Inn are well-furnished, comfortable and quiet; the breakfast is scrumptious; and the large parlor is a perfect place to relax and browse the rich selection of books and other information about the history of the area, or meet and chat with other guests. Wayne, the Innkeeper, and his staff go out of their way to make their guests' stay memorable.
Thank you for your recommendation as "The Place to Stay in the Valley!" We appreciate the time you spent sharing about your experience. So glad you could take advantage of our fire-lit parlor and rich book selections. We always strive to create a relaxing atmosphere for guests to unwind, have a good conversation, or just sit in our home away from home. We are delighted you enjoyed the antique furnishings and comfort of our rooms. And of course no B&B experience is complete without a "Breakfast to Remember!" We hope you will join us again soon and make some more wonderful memories!

Having never experienced a B&B, I didn't know what to expect. However, the friendly staff soon put us at ease by walking us through the registration process and the tour of the facility. The room was comfortable and the food was outstanding. Wayne, the owner introduced himself and we felt totally at ease talking to him as did we with all of the staff. We felt welcome there. They even helped us out with restaurants in the local area. Totally enjoyed our time and look forward to experiencing this again. Thanks!!!!

Stayed 4 nights--apparently that is rare as they only serve 2 breakfast items on alternating days. Wayne and staff are very nice. Location is walkable to downtown. 30-40 minutes to Shenandoah Natl. Park. If you like new and shiny, not your place. Road noise is heavy in early AM so take room in back of property away from truck route in front. I booked here after reading many reviews. I almost feel I may havestayed in a different B&B. This is an interesting place but in our estimation not a 5 star experience.

Mu husband and I chose the Stonewall jackson Inn because of it's location and proximity to the center of Harrisonburg and the local vineyards. Little did we know that the small thunderstorm would turn out to to be a major Noreaster that claimed a path form North Carolina to New Jersey. We were without power off and on, but Wayne and his crew did their best to ensure our safety and comfort were met. We did not know the extreme outcome of the storm until the morning. Beautiful cerilian blue skies were met with downed trees, no power and lack of air conditioning throughout the area. Our stay with Wayne, Frank, Martha Jo and crew was wonderful and comforting. We will definitely come back, hopefully without envisioning the wicked witch on her broom!

We arrived after 9PM, very tired after driving many hours (and over the mountain) to be greated by Q who has a smile and winning way about her that made us immediately relaxed and welcomed. As our stay progressed it only got better. The Inn is immaculate and beautiful, as is the surrounding area. There I met my future granddaughter (my financee's daughter's child) who melted my heart. After 5 hours of watching Dora the Explorer Saves the Ice Princess, and other great stories, we went to sleep. The next morning we were greeted by Wayne and Frank to a wonderful breakfast. Day one was his excellent french toast with the trimmings, day 2 we were served the best eggs benedict that I ever had! And my future grandchild had outstanding waffles, which Frank volunteered to cut up and sprinkle with powered sugar. Not only did I receive a Grandpa's (for father's day) card for the first time in my 62 years, without a doubt the best service/food as well. Thank you all, and we look forward to returning very soon!!!

Wayne and Martha Jo are incredible people who take great pride and effort to ensure that you personally have a great stay. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Frank & Q, two of the nicest, most sincere people my wife and I have ever met. That just set the tone for an unforgettable stay. The room was excellent, and served as a great spot for our in-room massage by Andre, a true professional. I would recommend this place to everyone who plans on visiting James Madison University (located in the town of Harrisonburg) or who plans on hiking/driving through the Shenandoah National Park (about 20 min away) or who just needs a place to sleep while passing through the I-81 corridor of western Virginia. My thanks to Wayne & Martha Jo and Frank & Q for an incredible weekend.

Our first stay at a B&B was an enjoyable one. We were the only guests but we know we'd have received the same care and attention from staff as we would have if the house were full. Our stay was peaceful, quiet and fun.

Innkeepers were very friendly and helpful. The room and house interior was very clean. For the cost of the room, I'd say everything else was a bit lacking. Again, these comments are compared to other B&Bs where we've stayed that were similar in price: breakfast was satisfactory but not "great"; coffee was extremely weak; while the room provided the necessary comfort, the details needed work - paint, furniture quality and decorating; artwork on the walls left a bit to desire; front porch very dirty, cluttered and "uninviting"; tent in place over rear deck seemed "odd" and a bit out of place; Again, my wife might have tempered a few of these comments, but in general, the place was nice, comfortable for sleeping (not for sitting in the room and reading though), and the innkeeper/employees were very nice and helpful.

The Inn is absolutely charming and the staff incredibly attentive to their guests. True southern hospitality at its very best! From the warm welcome by Wayne Engle to the incredible service and discussion with Martha Jo, our stay was exceptional. The Stonewall Jackson room is beautiful. The view through the windows, the decor, and the cleanliness, the exceptionally delicious breakfast....no detail was spared. We will return and no doubt, feel like we're coming home to family. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a must visit!!

Wayne greeted us himself and was available for anything we needed. The house is beautiful and absolutely a joy to stay in. Breakfast was better than any restaurant. We would stay there again anytime!

My boyfriend and I spent our Valentine's Day weekend here- it was our first B&B, but I think it is safe to say they have set the bar very high. Food was phenomenal, service was amazing, the staff very friendly. We couldn't have asked for a better experience, and will stay here again if we return to Harrisonburg.

I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn a few weeks ago while passing through on tour. What a fabulous place and staff! Very friendly, clean, and the tastiest food I've ever had at a B&B. Thank you guys! I'll totally look you up next time I'm traveling through Harrisonburg.

We were greeted by the smiling faces and upbeat energy of Erin and Holly. They led us to the sitting room where we checked in and then led us to our room, the Stonewall Jackson Suite, and made sure we knew where everything was and recommended local restaurants for dinner. After we perused the provided binder containing local menus, we decided to drive the short distance to the Clementine. Let me tell you, it was perfect. Local art adorning the walls, alive with happy customers ranging from JMU students to families. The food from apps to dessert was superb! Also, Wayne, the SJB&B owner had given us a business card to show our server for free dessert. We thought it would be one to share, but it ended up being good for all three of us to have free dessert! Then, back to the B&B for a sound night’s sleep. My wife and I were in the comfy king sized bed and our 13 year old daughter was quite satisfied on her futon. When morning came, we smelled the aromas of our breakfast being prepared by Holly and Erin downstairs. Having asked us what time we wished to eat the night before, we sauntered down about 10 minutes early to enjoy some coffee first. Breakfast was really tasty. My only ? was that it was advertised as “A Breakfast to Remember”. Actually, it was a fruit/yogurt cup, French toast made from homemade bread and a sausage patty. I’m a big guy so when Erin said they had more, I happily accepted another piece of French toast. As it would be the only meal we would have at the inn, I guess I expected a bit more than this rather meager plate. Yes, it was tasty and lovingly prepared, but I was hungry within the next couple of hours. Would we go again? Likely to Harrisonburg, but I may pay less for a room at the Hampton Inn and go to Shoney’s down the hill for a big boy breakfast, and still likely save a few bucks in the process. I do wish Wayne and his staff all the best!

My fiance and I stopped for one night on our way down from CT to North Carolina. The location was great - right off of 81, and we were greeted with a warm welcome upon our arrival. We received a little tour, which included a trip to the kitchen area where water and soda was available for us at any point during our stay. We stayed in the Sheridan room, located on the second floor. The room was very clean and neatly decorated .... I honestly felt like we were staying at a friend's house. The room was very spacious, and had its own thermostat so you can have the temp just how you like it! My one and only critique was that the mattress was a little hard for my taste - but to each their own! The area is extremely quiet, and we didn't hear any of the other guests throughout our stay. In the morning, we awoke to the delicious aroma of muffins and fresh bread baking and went down for our breakfast. Coffee, OJ, fruit/yogurt/granola cup, eggs, bacon, home fries, and muffins were cooked just for us. Yum!! I would definitely recommend The Stonewall Jackson Inn to anyone looking for a 'home away from home' experience. We enjoyed our stay, and would happily return if we find ourselves traveling through the area again.

I stayed in Town shortly before Christmas and chose the hotel due to its location within walking distance of town center and its original looking style. The welcome was warm and friendly, the accomodation was very comfortable and I started the day with a great breakfast. I can recommend the Stonewall Jackson, its a comfortable friendly place to stay.

Located near some nice restaurants, a serviceable b&b in a relatively cute town, not far off I-81.
Wayne the Owner Innkeeper here. I want to thank the person for this review which rates us lower than our usual enthusiastic 5 stars. My guess is that this person stayed with us over the Holidays during the week I was visiting my family. During that time I had an experienced Inn Sitter as we had few reservations at that time. I am intensely curious about why this person was less impressed that our past guests with their “Stonewall Jackson Experience”. I would welcome and thank this person if they would be so kind as o call or email me the details needing improvement from your stay, we will certainly appreciate it greatly. It will be very helpful to me in correcting and selecting Interim Innkeepers in the future. We are a Diamond Collection Inn and the experience here must be at a 5 star level!! Thank you again for the helpful email or telephone feedback to me, I will keep it confidential. 540-433-8233 or Wayne at StonewallJacksonInn.com

We just spent a weekend of heavenly smells and tastes at this quaint inn. the innkeeper (David) couldn't have been more interesting and willing to help us find our way around this college town. There was a very homey feel to Stonewall Jackson Inn. 'Twas a complete pleasure.

My Boyfriend and I were traveling from Atlanta to Allentown, Pennsylvania and chose the Stonewall Jackson Inn as a stopping point in the trek home for Thanksgiving. We were running behind schedule an didn't arrive until around 9pm David (great innkeeper and cook!!) was there waiting for us to arrive. He gave us a tour of the inn and suggested some amazing places to eat around town. The Inn is located within walking distance of some great restaurants. While there are some great finer dining places it was the night before Thanksgiving so we chose to do a little pub crawl of the town. JB's and BJ's were two of our favorites. Huge selection of beers, smoked wings, and burgers. We stayed in the Chamberlain room which is located at the front of the house. The bed was wonderful and the room was very clean. Breakfast was amazing. David is a phenomenal cook. We had yogurt and fruit, croissant French toast, bacon, tarragon eggs, and Apple compote. Really really yummy!! Wayne (owner) and David were both superb hosts. We had a nice chat about the history of the inn with them before breakfast and a little tour around the inn. Couldn’t have asked for a more memorable and relaxing place to stay. Thank you Wayne and David!!

This was our first time staying at a Bed and Breakfast. It was like visiting a new friend's home. We spent a quiet evening, relaxing and reading. We stayed for 2 nights in this beautifully furnished Inn. The staff is super friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel at home (especially David). Our room was spotless as was the rest of the Inn. There were two beds in our room, and although we only used one, it was a bit odd that there's an extra charge if the second bed is used. The room also had a small tv and wifi is available. The location was very convenient, within walking distance to the downtown area and a 5 minute car ride to JMU. We ate two hearty and delicious breakfasts sitting on the veranda surrounded by morning glory blooms. We plan to return next time we are in the area.

The risk of choosing a bed and breakfast from its website lies in the things the site doesn't disclose: the gas station across the street, the noisy refrigeration at the fish market next door; the squeaky floors and rattling pipes. We found NO undisclosed drawbacks at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Its website provides an accurate and, to our experience, complete description of its facilities and its considerable charm. We recommend the inn highly.

My bf and I got back from our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn last weekend and we had a great time! Originally we planned to go the prior weekend but I had a conflict with my schedule keeping me from going out of town. I was able to switch our reservation to the following weekend with no problem. On that Friday night then we arrived much later than planned but were still given a warm welcome from David. I enjoyed the Civil War motif throughout the inn. We stayed in the Sheridan room, plenty of space but also cozy. The floors squeaked some, but is to be expected with any older home. I found this B&B to be right on par with others I have stayed at. This was my bf's first experience at a B&B and he said that he would definitely go back. Having control of your temp in each room was a plus. Breakfast was delicious and the very generous portions kept us full well into the afternoon.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is conveniently located within walking distance of Harrisonburg, VA. It has a gravel parking. You need to walk up steps to enter the house. There are two rooms on the ground floor, but both of these have noise issues. The other rooms involve climbing stairs. I stayed in the Belle Boyd room, on the ground floor, directly across the hall from the kitchen. I did not expect to hear loud voices at 6:45 a.m.,coming from the kitchen, while breakfast was being prepared. There is no sound insulation between this room and the kitchen. If I had not already been awake, this would not have been a pleasant way to wake up. Unlike most facilities that charge for two people per ROOM, this establishment charges an extra $15.00 if a second bed is used in the room, regardless of the size of that extra bed. Breakfast was tasty, but not exceptional considering the cost of staying here. The charge for two people, in one room, each sleeping in a full size bed, was $180.69 for one night. The only amenities were water, soda and hot tea which were available in the kitchen all hours of the day.

The Inn was very clean, spacious rooms for a B&B, good breakfast. Having a child in the room was an extra $50 which I thought was pricey, considering most hotels "kids stay and eat free."

When we arrived, we were met by David who checked us in and told us about the area. He showed us where breakfast would be served before taking us to our room. There he explained the features of the room. He was also the breakfast "chef" and did an outstanding meal. The inn is located within walking distance to several restaurants which David had pointed out on a map. After we returned to the inn, we retired to our room and were pleasantly surprised at how well we slept...it was very quiet. We would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

An interesting B&B in an historic area. Innkeeper David made us feel at home and has deep knowledge of the Harrisonburg area if you like to shop, dine or explore. He is also a bibliophile and historian with profound knowledge of the Civil War if you have interest. Modern amenities such as individual thermostats are cleverly incorporated in 19th century rooms. The inn is on a fairly busy street so you will hear some traffic if you have a front room. It quiets down at night but starts up early in the morning. We noticed something else early in the morning - the aroma of an outstanding breakfast.

Dr. Wayne has a beautiful home that has been lovingly restored and maintained. We enjoyed our two night stay at the inn and loved its close proximity to downtown and the relatively short drive to the Shenandoah National Forest. We stayed at this B&B on our recent visit to JMW with our daughter. We enjoyed speaking with Wayne about JMU and his connection with the college. We browsed through JMU yearbooks he shared with us. What a great location and warm hospitality! We were treated to David's knowledge of Southern history and the significance of each room. We truly enjoyed the convenience of the Inn's location to historic Harrisonburg. The breakfast was delicious and deck was surrounded by beautiful Morning Glories - very relaxing and a great way to start the day! This Inn is worth the trip!

Owners at the Inn greeted us a bit too warmly (hands off the guests, please, somewhere between familiar and formal without being too familiar is what I'm after.) They did not know I had confirmed the reservation online, they made up for that mistake, quick enough. We received the same room I had booked. The room was nice, the Inn is nice, the people were friendly. However, there were a few missteps, and for the cost of the experience, I'm not sure of the value. The staff inquired about my child (even though I had called up about it previously to see if she was welcome to join us, and they said they were happy to serve her Apple Juice at breakfast, special request granted before we arrived) upon arrival this was awkward. The rooms sheets were incredibly soft, the King Bed was not nearly firm and deluxe for the cost of the room, needs to be replaced. The breakfast tried very hard(full disclosure I'm a Chef, and a previous Exec Chef at a 4diamond hotel). The portions were too big and the poached egg was cooked too hard the first day. The hash had potential, the potatoes were not cooked fully. The second day, they forgot us altogether, (as we listened to the staff start bickering a bit in the kitchen) we didn't receive our breakfast entree and they forgot to give us the coffee cake. The staff were friendly, after the initial inquiry, to my mature 8yr old, answered her questions and talked to her. So, I don't want to come across as this place is bad; it isn't. They are close to the college town, the outside porch is quite pleasant, and there are a few comfortable places to sit and read a book or just relax.
Wow! Thank you for this finely detailed review. Of course, a comedy of errors happened in your particular case. Sorry, it was an unfortunate time for you to visit and would like to have you return and give us another try. We are a training venue for the Hospitality Program at James Madison University. This particular weekend we had two new Innkeeping Interns in training and mistakes were made, the bickering was really some instruction going on regarding the handling of guests when we have a full house of 25 people to serve. I am sorry that you did not inform me of your professional status, I would have explained the training that was going on. Had I known that you were a reviewing Executive Chef at a 4 star Hotel, I certainly would have had ongoing conversation with you about the breakfast and your stay and as I do with every guest and made sure that your stay met or exceeded your expectations. Thank you again for taking the time to write your detailed and professional review. It will be very helpful to training staff. Try us again, I will invite you to give us some training in food preparation :-)

Lovely blending of the old (beautiful woodwork, fireplaces, antique furniture) and the modern (free WiFi, luxurious sheets, "green" energy-conscious bathrooms.). It's very evident that Owner/Innkeeper Wayne loves what he does - that's reflected in his enthusiasm and friendliness in making guests feel at home. Both Wayne and the Inn website are great sources for local activities and places to explore. Galena, the hostess, was delightful. Sherry

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. It was our first Bed and Breakfast experience and it did not disappoint. We really enjoyed our stay at the Stonewall. It was sort of a reunion between us two guys who were in Vietnam together and our wives. While there we learned that Wayne is also a Veteran of the Korean war so us vets had a chance to talk about service life. Wayne is a great host and made us all feel very welcome. We sat in the living room to the wee hours. It was nice that he sent pictures of us at the fireplace to our e-mail. Good memories, good food, good rooms and most of all hospitality.

This b&b does so many things exactly right. Dr. Wayne, the host, is wonderful. He shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for the area and JMU (the local university) with the guests. He is quite a chef and his breakfast was delicious. On top of all that, every little detail is considered. The room itself was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed along with a few extra touches like a "hand salt" that left my hands softer than they've been in ages. Dr. Wayne recommended a local restaurant to us, and they gave us free dessert just for mentioning that we were his guests. Breakfast on the covered patio was so peaceful. We will never stay anywhere else when we visit Harrisonburg!
Thank you for this great review. I am certain it is very helpful to anyone who reads it. I know it takes time to do this but it is appreciated by others and me too!!!

Wayne makes you feel right at home. The inn is located near the town center, which aids sight seeing. A lot of information is laid out in your room on historical sites, dining and so forth. Wayne is right there to help you plan your excursions, and provide input, if asked. The rooms themselves are clean, have individual climate control, and odorless. No musty smell in this older house. The grounds are lovely, with a gazebo for relaxing. The breakfast was wonderful, try the breakfast ham. If you want a wonderful experience of what a stay in a bed and breakfast should be, this is the place for that experience.

A friend of mine and I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn for one night in July 2011. Check-in was a breeze and the rooms were beautiful (I saw several of them through open doors as I was led to my room). The room was immaculately clean and everything was tidy and neat. If you forget any of your toiletries - no worries, Wayne (the owner/innkeeper) makes sure you have everything you need! The bed was very comfortable and there was minimal noise from the busy road outside. The landscaping that has been done for this place is lovely! We sat outside under a cute wrought iron gazebo and enjoyed a glass of wine. The location of this bed and breakfast is perfect for strolling to the downtown area for dinner or drinks (about a 5 minute walk). The area was safe and we did not feel uncomfortable on our walk, even at 11:30 at night. After a good night's sleep, we woke up to a HUGE breakfast which included Wayne's twist on Eggs Benedict and hash browns (each dish using fresh herbs). The coffee was to die for! The staff was wonderful and if there was anything we needed, they catered to it. Overall, this is one of the best B&Bs I have ever stayed in. We will return!

Had a wonderful stay the the Stonewall Jackson B&B on our trip down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. We stayed in General Picket's room which is located on the back of the house above the kitchen. The room was very nice and quiet. The house has a neat history and is conveniently within walking distance to downtown Harrisonburg. The night inn keeper recommended a local bistro named Clementine's (http://clementinecafe.com/) which we sampled. It had a very nice menu and we really enjoyed it as well. In the morning, Dr. Wayne the owner fixed us eggs benedict made with some nicely thin sliced Virginia ham. I would definitely stay here again and will recommend the place to my friends.

I wanted to find a nice place to surprise my partner as a belated anniversary/honeymoon, and had always admired the stone house on the hill. And what a delightful surprise it was! Warm, comfortable, relaxing... we sat on the porch for a while, then the gazebo, enjoying a very pleasant evening. We saw rabbits playing in the field the next morning, and a delightful breakfast the next morning on the deck. Dr Wayne and Galina are excellent hosts, and they create a warm friendly atmosphere- very restful and refreshing, and one that makes conversing with other guests a natural delight. I was able to relax, celebrate, reconnect with dear friends, and visit a few of the local spots. Heather & i give it a Five Star Experience!

Let me start by saying if you are looking for a place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley I would recommend looking up Dr. Wayne. He and his staff are second to none in the steps they take to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. After a spending a few minutes with him at check-in, you are left knowing a lot of love and care has been put into making your stay enjoyable and complete. We had one, I hate to call it a complaint, so I guess "grumble" would b more appropriate. Don't get me wrong, the house was immaculate and impressive on many levels. The bed was comfortable, the bedding was spectacular, the room was neat and well decorated, the bathroom was small but clean, you controlled the temperature of your room to suit you. Every potential need was taken care of ahead of time. There was even a small flashlight lying by the bed! Okay to the actual grumbling. The window by the sink didn't have a shade, which was a bit disconcerting. The curtain on that window was barely adequate to prevent exposure. The shower floor squeaked to the point we worried we would bother guests below. The door to the room had a 1.5" gap at the bottom allowing light and LOTS of noise to filter into the room. Like I said a grumble, not a real complaint Breakfast was very enjoyable. We were able to enjoy our meal outside on the porch. It truly was a breakfast to remember. Dr. Wayne and his staff prepared a meal we will be talking about for some time. The home is within walking distance of the historic district of Harrisonburg and many restaurants. There isn't a great deal of traffic, and the yard is large enough to make it feel somewhat secluded. I don't know why I feel B&B's should be more secluded as many of them are not, but this one feels "stuck" in the middle of town. That is a personal preference though. It does however, mean you are able to enjoy a stroll through a quaint older town.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to write this great review and the helpful "grumbles" about our Lee Room. Such an effort merits an informative and appreciative response to the reviewer and the readers. The replacement matching shade for that room has been on order and should be here today. The "squeaky" shower door responded instantly to waterproof silicone lubricant. I have, with good humor, chastised the housekeepers for not telling me about squeaky shower doors. However, they instantly inform me of any squeaky beds :-). The room door crack....well, the house is 150 years old and the hardwood floors and doors are original. about door "crack"; I have never had a complaint about it, but, had I known about your sensitivity to the light and sound from the space between the door and the floor I would have suggested (a McGiver) that you take one of the several extra pillows from the room closet and place it on the floor against the door. I think that it would block both light and sound very effectively. I am thinking it may not be in keeping with "this Old House" to try to tamper-add a piece to the bottom that beautiful old antique door. What do you think?? Yep, we are in the Historic "Old Town" District of the City's Center and you can enjoy a stroll to fine sidewall and rooftop dining, museums, art galleries, shopping boutiques and live entertainment. If you desire a "secluded" B&B in this area, try www.bythesideoftheroad.com and or www.oldmassanuttenlodge.com. I know them well. They are secluded beautiful country Inn-B&Bs that you will enjoy. Thank you again to the reviewer for giving me the opportunity to comment and I hope this response is helpful to you as well. Come, stay, and you will enjoy TripAdvisor's top rated Inn here in the beautiful and historical central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia!! Wayne

The innkeeper and staff were very friendly and generate a "make yourself at home" atmosphere. En suite room was nice and structure of house lends itself to quiet lodging. Not a high end luxury B&B and, as such, the price for a one night stay seemed steep. A strong focus on local tourism and catering to those in the Valley to visit quilt museums and battlefields.
The reviewer is right!! We are a circa 1885 restored mansion that has the ambiance of a comfortable home of that period, but with all the modern conveniences and amenities. We take "Southern Hospitality" seriously in our area and Harrisonburg is well known in the valley for providing that hospitality to any visitors. It is the Valley's Friendly City. Thus, when you walk in the door, you are one of the family and can make yourself at home. Our repeat guests frequently describe us as their "home away from home". There are so many things to "See and Do" here as we have many historical sites and museums. Being in the center of the Shenandoah Vally, Harrisonburg is the "Gateway" city for skiing, biking, hiking, fishing and many other outdoor activities. We are a listed "Appalachian Trail Community", Skyline Drive & Shenandoah National Park welcome center. Wineries, Caverns, organic and family farm visits, glass blowing and many more like attractions are easy day trips; thus, to really enjoy your stay you might plan on staying 2-3 days. That will give you a chance to enjoy the fine dining, shops, museums, art galleries, and live entertainment during your evening stroll through our lively Downtown Historic District where we are located. It is an interesting comment about our rates. Many people mark us less than "perfect" in value but there is a good but hidden reason for it. It is location, location, location!!! Most B&B's are located in the country or in a residential part of the a city where you must commute drive to dinner, shops, etc. Because of our very desirable Historic Downtown walk everywhere location property is expensive. The assessment of the land of location of the Inn is as much as the 1M beautifully restored 8000 sq.ft mansion;yet have the lowest B&B rates in the area, and we have free parking, Wi-Fi, drinks, with a comfortable "make yourself at home" ambiance! :-) Come and check it out! Do you remember that moment when you walk in the door of your home after being on the road for hours of wearying of travel and your soul lets out that unheard AHHHH . That is the same experience that we had at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Dr Wayne and his staff are exceptional at making you feel like family. Our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn was one of the highlights of our visit to the Shenandoah Valley.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the quaint and welcoming Stonewall Jackson Inn. It was the perfect launch pad for our excursions into the National Park, wineries, and Polyface Farm. Downtown Harrisonburg offers wonderful dining options, and the Inn owner is incredibly knowledgeable about the area. His recommendations were great! The breakfast was huge and delicious— enough to keep us going all day.

My wife and I were on our way to Bethlehem, Pa from Greenville, SC when we decided to stop for the night. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a very easy "off/on" from Interstate 81 at Harrisonburg, Va and is situated close to the charming historic district. As soon as we saw the Inn and met Wayne (the innkeeper) and his associate Galena we knew we had made a good choice. They both are clearly "peope persons" and made us feel right at home. If you are interested in spending one night or several nights you will not go wrong choosing the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg, Va. Jim & Kathy

Checkin was easy. Service was great. The Host and Hostess were very friendly and went out of their way to make sure everyone had whatever they needed. The whole house theme is Civil War era decor, but not too frilly. It felt like a home you could get comfortable in ...and we did. Breakfast was excellent. Ample parking and a great location.

Interesting redo with lovely woodwork. The food is just OK-I expected more given the write-up and the "rave". The quanitity was fine, but the quality was so so. It's way overpriced given the rooms , the area, and the ammenities. We're used to far more for far less. It really should be priced accordingly-not on the high end.

"A night's delight, a breakfast to remember" is the inn's motto and they deliver. Wayne and Galina were extraordinary hosts, the room was spacious and comfortable and breakfast on the back porch was very nice. Easter morning was beautiful! The first floor is chocked full of interesting things to look through, some nice small gifts and collectibles, and Wayne was very helpful navigating the local area. The location is very convenient to I-81, James Madison, and downtown Harrisonburg.

Certainly worth a "Diamond Collection" member property award for a wonderful B&B. Dr. Wayne and Galina (innkeepers) and their staff work diligently to make sure each visitor enjoys their stay. Excellent breakfast with a variety each morning. And conveniently located to alot of attractions nearby. The only small setback is the location of the B&B along a busy highway near downtown Harrisonburg, so there is an ocassional sound of traffic. But don't let that stop you from enjoying this piece of heaven. PS Look for the only remaining self portrait of the previous owner of the historical home, before Dr. Wayne purchased it in 1988.

Basic B & B. Nothing remarkable in furnishings or decor to warrant the price for our room. Would have preferred to stay at the local Hampton Inn and saved about $50 dollars per night. Do NOT understand why they want to have pictures of the guests and keep asking for your picture. Not a bad place but not worth the price frankly.
The reviewer is right about the furnishings. The Inn was built right after the Civil War and the furnishings are not "frilly/formal"; it is furnished like an circa 1880 home. However, most of the guests appreciate our being in the upscale part of the city, yet have the modern conveniences and amenities but enjoy the 1880 restored architecture and property ambiance. An outstanding value of staying with us is embedded in our lively Downtown Historic location with free off-street parking and the ability easily walk to 40 fine restaurants and shops, art and historical galleries and museums, stage theater with EZ on-off proximity to I-81 and JMU & Eastern Mennonite Universities. As well, we evidently missed the boat on providing our famous "Stonewall Jackson Experience" which is our famous trademark along with our gourmet "Breakfast to Remember" personally served on our shaded romantic outdoor Patio with music & conversation. Seems that the breakfast alone would account for a good part of the $50 bucks saved if one would stay at the Hampton :-) Have you ever had a Hampton breakfast??? LOLO There is a "Better Way to Stay" unless you just want to go to bed and sleep, grab coffee. a banana, and a warmed up danish and get on the road. About the picture, We routinely ask the guests if they would like us to take a picture of them having a good time here as a remembrance gift.....we send it to them free of charge. ... I am not sure what happened here but we will strive to do better. Perhaps the reviewer loved the luxury 1000 thread count linens, free hi-speed Wi-Fi, paddle fans and the individually climate controlled rooms. :-) I hope so. Thank you for your time and welcome feedback. Wayne

It was one of many college overnight visits and was truly the best experience. We relaxed in the common room at night and when it was time to go to bed the room was wonderful and the beds were so comfortable! We all woke up well rested and had the best breakfast any of us had had all year. Wayne and Galina are truly amazing and provided such a memorable and enjoyable experience! DEFINITELY stay at this b and b!

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is charming. Better than a hotel stay because you feel right at home. Galina met us when we arrived, checked us in, provided a tour and showed us to our room. The Jeb Stuart room was spacious with all the amenities of home. Wayne's breakfasts are fabulous-from Eggs Benedict to french toast to hash. Service exceptional. Proximity to downtown within walking distance. Great anniversary/birthday destination!

My sisters and I came to visit my daughter who is a senior at JMU. I wanted to stay at a B&B since my sisters had never done that. We loved the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Wayne was so gracious when we checked in. He helped us feel at home right away as he showed us to our bright, cheery rooms and explained the history of the Inn. He also helped us with directions to a winery and reservations for dinner at Clementine's. They showed us to the front table when we said Wayne had sent us! He welcomed my daughter and her friend for the delicious breakfast the next morning. My son has 2 more years at JMU and we'll definitely be back. Thank you, Wayne.

could not comment on the dining since we were unable to partake. I'm not sure since the number of rooms is small, but I would have expected breakfast to be later in the morning. But then, what do I know we were up at 8 anyway. Thank you.

Stonewall jackson is your quintessential quaint getaway set on the outskirts of a lively college town. Before my stay, I did the research and everyone pointed me in one direction. The research paid dividends. My stay exceeded all my expectations. Incredible food. Wonderful hosts. I had mtn bikes on the roof of my car, Wayne (the owner) assured me they would be kept safe and not to worry. I was given all the information I needed for touring on my stay.

Stayed for one evening at the Stonewall Jackson Inn with my daughter while touring JMU. It was the perfect place to lay our hats and our tired bodies for the night! Wayne is extremely accommodating, anticipating needs without having to speak them. Nothing is a problem, he knows exactly where to go for a wonderful dinner and prepares an excellent breakfast in the morning before seeing us on our way. All in all a very clean, warm and comfy experience I'd recommend to all!

Stayed here for a night on Valentine's weekend, and used it as a surprise to my then gf...now fiancée, after proposing at dinner that night! We both went to school at JMU so I had lived in Harrisonburg for 5 years...and this was the best way to come back for a romantic visit to where we met...Nice rooms full of charm and character - much better than any of the local hotels. Breakfast in the morning was perfect and everyone made us feel so special after our big night. Much thanks to Wayne and the Inn for helping to make our weekend one we will never forget!

My daughter and I stayed while in town for State Band auditions. We wanted something close to JMU that wasn't a college-town hotel room so splurged for a night at the Inn. I agree with all the nice comments. The breakfast was indeed delicious and fueled us past lunch. We'd like to come back when the weather is warmer so we can enjoy the porch.

My stay at The Stonewall Jackson Inn was unlike any other that I have experienced thus far. Immediately, I felt warm and welcome in the abode that Wayne and his son have worked so hard to make memorable for their guests. Wayne's amiable and laid back nature made me feel right at home, not to mention, the croissant French toast that he made for breakfast the next morning was out of this world (the scrambled eggs were tasty as well)! It was nice being able to come and go as we pleased without feeling like we had to check in or out each time. Galina was also a pleasure to get to know during breakfast. I imagine that if I choose to stay at another Bed and Breakfast, that it will be rather challenging to measure up to a place such as this. Overall, an amazing experience and I plan to visit Wayne and the Stonewall Jackson Inn very soon.

My boyfriend and I visited Stonewall Jackson Inn for a romantic Valentine's day weekend. We were actually expecting the Inn to be in an isolated, countryside type location (our own fault for not looking closely at the map!) and were a bit surprised that the Inn was in the heart of Harrisonburg, a small town. But this fact actually turned out to be great, since we were walking distance from some great restaurants (2 of which Wayne recommended, we loved!). The Chamberlain room was affordable and cozy, with its own fireplace. There were nice little touches throughout the room, like a candy bowl and individual temperature control in each room, as well as a fireplace! The breakfast the next day was wonderful too. Wayne was very welcoming and very informative about the surrounding area. Overall, a great place to stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night and the only downside was...we only stayed one night! Wayne the innkeeper and his staffer Galina were two of the most hospitable and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We stayed in the Pickett room, which Galina told us was one of her personal favorites. Everything was amazing. Wayne had restaurant menus on hand and offered to make reservations for us at the one we chose. Then, he gave us a coupon for dinner! I could go on and on and we only stayed less than 24 hours. It was the best getaway I've ever had. A+!!

My husband and I have been visitors to the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B for several years. We always enjoy our stay and love seeing Wayne. His hugs are the best! On this trip we also had the great pleasure of meeting Galina and Lynn, who are learning the ways of being great inn-keepers. We were introduced to some fabulous new restaurants within just a few minutes of the Inn. I especially enjoy the welcoming fireplaces in the living room and bedroom. Nothing says warm and inviting like a fireplace welcome! We look forward to our next stay.

My husband and I stayed with Dr. Wayne for Parent's Weekend at James Madison University. The Inn was recommended by the parents of another student, and our expectations were completely fulfilled. My husband is a Civil War buff so staying in an Inn with the rooms named of different generals was a treat ... it's beautifully furnished and decorated and there are some wonderful little touches, like a candy dish with various candies. In the evening we sat on the front porch and had a cocktail with another couple we met at the Inn. Breakfast was incredible -- bring your appetite! Very generous portions and delicious. Oh, and we made return reservations before we checked out.

The house is absolutely gorgeous. I loved the location and our room was extremely comfortable. We had a great time, but Wayne didn't seem to know what to say to us. I'm not sure why, but he was very awkward and brief with us which made us feel a little unwelcome.

My husband and I were thrilled to finally stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, as we had tried unsuccessfully to book a room last year because they were full. We came in early October. The staff welcomed us on-line first and then sat us down for an introductory chat when we arrived. We felt immediately comfortable, as this turned out to be one of those B&B's where the hosts give you some space. We found helpful travel information and ideas in magazines and brochures of activities in the Harrisonburg area in our room. In the morning, we were surprised that we were not the only ones to prefer an early breakfast, but after the initial expected small talk with the other guests, we were left to our own conversations. Breakfast included French toast croissants, eggs, bacon and fresh fruit + coffee and orange juice. Delicious! Our room was the yellow one with a small writing desk overlooking the backyard. We loved the intimacy of the space and the fact that soap/shower gel and shampoo/conditioner were built right in to the shower in a dispenser. Had we stayed longer than one night, we would have made better use of the small fridge. Hope we can come back soon--

I brought my mom to the Stonewall Jackson Inn, the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, for her first experience of a bed and breakfast. She absolutely loved it-the quaintness and charm reflecting the décor of the Civil War period; the warmth and personal attention of Wayne, the inn keeper; the delicious full breakfast on the patio amongst the morning glories and humming birds; and the beautiful gardens and outdoor seating areas. Our room had everything we needed including very comfortable beds for a great night’s sleep. It was a delight to have a home away from home while visiting my daughter who attends JMU. I’ll look forward to returning with my husband when we visit our daughter again.

We have made two wonderful trips to Stonewall Jackson Inn. Both visits were outstanding. Wayne and his staff are always accommondating. The rooms were spotless and the beds so very comfortable. The eggs Benedict were our favorite. The service was excellent at all times. The back porch was great with the umbrella tables and a spacious place to enjoy visiting with the other guests. We felt right at home and enjoyed exploring. We enjoyed the hospitality at the Inn as well as its historic character. So far, we have stayed in the Robert E. Lee and Belle Boyd rooms.

Wayne and his staff greet you like old friends anxious to share their wonderful home and town with you. Explore the wonderful house and grounds. Expert recommendations as to what to do, where to eat and how to find activities you will love. Many destinations are an easy walk and the town itself is charming and interesting. The breakfast is fabulous and not attention to detail is spared. You will delight in many of the "Virginia Grown" products that are used here. I have to mention that most rooms have a private bath and private temperature controls.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn was a great stop on our trip from South Carolina back to PA. The Inn is really beautiful (each room is so unique!) with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was clear that much time and lots of love went into making the Inn a very special place. Our room was lovely and had all the amenities - comfortable bed, great shower, small refrigerator, iron/board, TV, desk, hairdryer, phone, AC. Breakfast was on the back patio among the colorful morning glories - what a treat! We were close to antique shopping and the stores in the town center, which was only a short drive away and where we had a nice dinner at Clementine's (there was live music as well). I would love to visit in the Fall/Winter when the fireplaces are crackling!

The owner Wayne, was extremely nice. He was very helpful with everything. The breakfast was great. The only downer was the bed and bathroom facilities. The bed was hard as a rock. The shower was a 2.5 foot by 2.5 foot. Other guest that came down for breakfast also commented that their beds were killers.
Oh My :-) This review is most welcome, Thank you very much!! It prompted me to do some intensive research as I had never had a comment from a guest or a review about the bed being as hard as a rock..He was right!!! Indeed, the bed in our Sherman Room, was just that, as my new housekeeper had flipped the mattress, not knowing that our new top of the line Serta Ultra Pillow Tops, should never be flipped! Thus, this poor man was sleeping on the wrong side of the mattress which was in effect a hard surface that supported the inner springs of the Ultra Pillow Top! We have corrected that and have given our new housekeeper a crash course in Pillow Top mattresses. LOLOL.. Hey, I will be happy to give whoever it was a complimentary stay on the pillow top side of the mattress, and I am sure he will experience our usual "Night's Delight" :-) About the shower in that same room, it is the smallest in the Inn as the available room to install it was not sufficient for a larger one. Thus we have bedded the room with a smaller double & twin bed to discourage really "large" people to to pick it. The shower is 36"x30" which is sufficient for the average person, but is probably tight for larger people. That is why this room is our lowest priced multi-bedded room. Families love it as their teen-ager can sleep in the twin on a bargain basis :-) Thanks again for the helpful review...it was a gift to me!!

Great B&B. Now this is my kind of B&B. Wonderful historic appeal but with many modern day conveniences including wireless internet, cable TV. Those conveniences do not distract from the early American charm as they are nicely tucked away. Meticulously decorated by the owner. They advertise a great breakfast and they deliver. My daughter was excited about her orientation day at JMU and we were both looking forward to spending travel time together, with the exploration of her new college "home". Knowing how limited our time can be together we searched JMU's list of B&B's and were delighted to find availability at this beautifully appointed and charming inn. Wayne is a delightful host who was quick to give a warm and friendly greeting and have informative suggestions for local attractions, enjoyable dining, and interests within walking distance. Our accommodations were true to what was advertised on the website, and we enjoyed the antiques, lovely woodwork, and gardens. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed the outdoor dining amongst yellow roses and birdsong. It was a perfect setting for mom and daughter to reconnect, laugh, and look forward to the new stage we are embarking on.

My wife and I took our son to an open house weekend at James Madison University in April. We were so busy we did not get to make arrangements for ourselves and decided to play it by ear. After the activities we left our son to experience a night in the dorms while we went to explore downtown Harrisonburg for lunch. We stumbled on a wonderful restaurant/bar, Clementines, that had good food, beverages and acoustic music later that night. We found an ad for Stonewall Jackson Inn and the prospect of "a night's delight, a breakfast to remember" seemed perfect. When Wayne answered the phone I knew by his calm, warm and friendly tone we had found the right place. The inn is close to the campus making it very convenient when visiting JMU. We went to checkin before coming back for dinner and music. Wayne was wonderful, giving us a tour of the inn which was beautifully maintained and even accommodating my wish for my afternoon coffee ritual. Our room had a comfortable king-size bed and a bright "clean" bathroom. Although the house is old with beautiful dark wood trim our bedroom and bath were well maintained. The classical music playing in the downstairs parlor was a welcome touch. While at dinner we got a call from our son, who was unable to find an available bed in the dorm and not eager to sleep on the floor. I called Wayne and asked if our son could stay with us. He was very understanding and we brought our son back to the inn. So much for a night's delight but Wayne's gourmet meal the next morning was truly a breakfast to remember! I highly recommend Stonewall Jackson Inn to anyone visiting Harrisonburg. Now that my son has chosen to attend JMU my wife and I will stay here when coming to visit him at JMU.

My husband and I, two teachers beginning our summer vacation, stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B in June. If you are planning to go to the Harrisonburg area, we highly recommend a stay here. Wayne, our host, was wonderful: attentive, friendly, and an excellent chef. His recommendations for restaurants and local activities were just right. Our charming room was very clean - perhaps the cleanest room in a B&B I've ever seen - and comfortable. After our two night stay, we felt renewed and relaxed. We will certainly be returning.

Stonewall Jackson was only our second experience at a B&B; we were pleased with having a private bath as well as the good price and flexibility with reservations - many other websites I looked at required a 2 night stay on a weekend (especially a holiday weekend like we were planning). Beautiful house, grounds and breakfast - we enjoyed having a private table versus eating with everyone at a main table (as in our other B&B experience) since this was an anniversary trip. Should we find ourselves back in the area, we will certainly book again!

Do you want to be treated like royalty, pampered and served a delicious breakfast??? Then, wait no longer...call Dr. Wayne at Stonewall Jackson...do it now before all the rooms are booked!!!!! It will be an experience of a life time because you will be treated as a long lost family member who decides to return home for a visit. BEST Bed and Breakfast I've ever visited!!!!!!

We have always wanted to visit Stonewall Jackson Inn, it was finally the time. My husband loves History especially the Civil War and Stonewall Jackson, so this was a fun way to celebrate, to go to this Inn. We loved the art that graced the house. Our Anniversary week and of course Mothers day approaching it was a great time to get away. We regret not being able to stay longer than one day. The warm southern hospitality from Wayne and his wife were truly wonderful, you felt like you lived there. The Inn and Room were clean. We loved their beds, we felt like we were floating on a cloud. We thought it was quiet and not hard at all to get a good night sleep. We don’t eat Eggs Benedict every day at home. Eating Eggs Benedict made our special week outstanding! Go Wayne! Thanks again, we hope we will be able to stay again and again! Take care and hopefully until then!

We needed a place to get away from it all and relax, and this was the PERFECT place! The Stonewall Jackson Inn is so peaceful, lovely, and everything you would want in an Inn. The decor is warm and inviting and the host is gracious and friendly. He is also a fabulous cook!! Can you imagine French Toast made with croissants? Fresh fruit, eggs, your choice of honey ham or country ham...anything you could want. The service was excellent as well, and the Inn was spotless! Even with a full house you couldn't hear anyone else. Each room is very private and has it's own bath. It was an incredible experience. If you need a quiet getaway, please visit The Stonewall Jackson Inn - you won't be disappointed!!

Going into the Stonewall Jackson Inn I was both excited and nervous, having never stayed at a bed and breakfast I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’m happy to say that Wayne and his staff blew me away and have now set high standards for any future bed and breakfasts. All of the staff was friendly, attentive, and polite. Our room was cute and cozy equipped with our own bathroom, mini fridge, and television. The house was also very charming; I loved all the outdoor seating options. Breakfast was AMAZING each morning. It’s convenience to all the downtown Harrisonburg restaurants also made for great lunches and dinners. I honestly do not have enough words to express my satisfaction with the Stonewall Jackson Inn.

Both of our daughters attend JMU, a brisk walk from the Stonewall Jackson Inn. We have been guests of Wayne's B+B four years running - the hospitality, cleanliness, and aroma of breakfast to remember circulating the B+B are forever part of our memories. We were new to a B+B in 2006 and thanks to Wayne and his staff, we are forever indebted and relish B+Bs more than chain hotels - it's that simple!

We stayed one night while traveling through VA, but we would have liked to stay longer. The Stonewall Jackson room was beautiful, comfortable, and clean. The B&B is located in a wonderful pre-civil war building with lots of character. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The innkeeper, Wayne, was very thoughtful and caring. He made our dinner reservations and gave us discount coupons for the restaurant. Wayne even took our photo and emailed it to us as a memento of our stay. We would stay here again.

This is the BEST B&B in Harrisonburg, VA. It is very close to JMU -- you can walk to campus, which is especially helpful for events like Parents Weekend and Graduation! The home is beautiful, the food is delicious, and the innkeeper and his staff are great! We recommend this B&B while you student is at JMU or if you are visiting the area!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the gracious hospitality of our host. It was a great way to celebrate my husband's birthday weekend. We were able to include special guests for breakfast and I was able to arrange for a surprise birthday cake. Our deepest thanks to Wayne and everyone else who made it a memorable stay! Paula Dail

Wonderful accommodations, warm greetings and attentiveness from staff, convenient to downtown and other restaurants. However, the "breakfast to remember" is no better than that served at numerous B&Bs throughout North America. If it's going to be included in the signature advertising line it should be far more elaborate than that experienced.

I just returned from a bicycle tour of Virginia with 12 other Canadians. We stayed at 4 different heritage inns, all of which were impressive but, the Stonewall Jackson Inn was in a league of its own. Wayne and his staff give new meaning to the concepts of hospitality, comfort and courtesy. The rooms, grounds and common areas personified southern comfort and the breakfasts were "over the top". My wife and I intend to return to discover more of the living history that surrounds the area, much of which is so well explained by Wayne himself. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is just off Interstate 81 and offers great value and security in a peaceful neighbourhood. Go Canucks Go!!!

My Wife was disappointed when we tried to make reservations at the Joshua Wilton House in Harrisonburg and it was full. Well she should not have been because we found the Stonewall Jackson Inn to be one of the best inns that we have stayed at. The room and bath were comfortable, the common areas were inviting and the breakfast was outstanding. It was a nice and quiet retreat and we hope to come back.

We had a wonderful stay at the Stonewall Jackson. Wayne and his staff were absolutely accommodating and the Inn was charming. They easily worked with our vegetarian/vegan diets and provided us with an amazing breakfast. The Inn is located within a few blocks of the downtown and only about 20 minutes from the Shenandoah National Park. It was a perfect launching point to enjoy Harrisonburg and the surrounding area.

While we did enjoy our stay, we both feel that we paid way too much for our stay. For instance, there was a water fountain that dripped all night outside of our room, as well as rather loud classical music played all night. I'd say both my husband and I got around 3 hours of sleep due to the fountain, music, and traffic noise outside. Breakfast was good, but nothing we couldn't have done at home. The drain in our room was stopped up, and my husband had to fix it himself. The bathroom was teeny tiny. The inn is beautiful, comfortable, and relaxing, and we probably would have enjoyed our stay more had we been in a different room. We both feel that the room was very overpriced. Oh well, at least we made memories!
Whoops...sorry about this one :-) It is true that this is our smallest and most inexpensive room and the rate is less than the local Sleep Inn (without the breakfast). In the room description on-line we note this and that it is small & subject to noise. The Chamberlain is just off the lobby by the front entrance, and there is a a waterfall fountain there that makes a waterfall trickle sound. Sounds like I better move it. As well we do have classical background music in the lobby as well that is usually turned off after 10PM. The drain problem is of real concern, we have had zero problems with all our plumbing as it is new, I wish I would have known about it, I would be interested in what was done to remedy whatever the problem was. Sure wouldn't want that to happen again. Ahhhh yes, all the signature recipes for our famous "Breakfast to Remember" are on our website and thus can be made at home, right in your own kitchen. Of course the fresh fruit and coffee cake are a good starter for any breakfast. The two favorite signature main course ones are our French Toast Croissant made with a secret wash (hint; it includes orange juice), fresh local sausage/bacon with scrambled eggs and a fresh pineapple slice. The other is Stonewall Eggs Benedict made with your choice of either Smoked Salmon, or local Virginia hand rubbed sugar cured ham from the Turner Ham House, sides Rosemary fried potatoes, poached apples, and a light Hollandaise Sauce flavored with fresh dill over your poached eggs. You can enjoy all this right in your own home, but the ambiance just is not the same as being served on our outside Paradise Cafe's deck or cozy & sunny back porch. Ya'll come back, we will put you in another room and provide a "wow" night for you.

We greatly enjoyed our weekend. The entire Inn was keenly themed which enhanced our enjoyment of this interestingly historic city. The personable innkeep was very warm and inviting, knowledgable and involved in the local community, and capable of making an incredibly delicious breakfast (don't turn down the Virginia ham). We definitely plan to make a return visit.

Stonewall Jackson Inn, Harrisonburg VA 18-20 March 2010 It was a pleasure to stay here, close to everything. The I 81 Interstate, downtown, Skyline Drive, the Arboretum, all were close-by and easily accessible. Wayne, the Innkeeper, was very helpful and suggested many places to visit, and the breakfasts were absolutely “four star”, (especially the Eggs Benedict). We very highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and plan to return ourselves!

We have stayed at The Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg for going on six years now and will stay nowhere else in the area! Innkeeper Wayne and his energetic, friendly crew make us feel like this is our second home. We've received great recommendations on places to eat and things to do, and the breakfasts are outstanding (and we are major B&Bers and know our breakfasts, believe me!). The rooms are full of charm and comfort and character, each one unique and well-appointed. The price is more than fair for all you get, so by all means, don't hesitate! You will greatly enjoy, and like us, probably come back and enjoy again and again.

My husband and I stayed only 1 night but we had a great time. We arrived and were greated warmly by Dr. Wayne Engel. He made us feel as if we were old friends instead of paying guests. Our room was very clean and chaming as well the entire Inn. He was very helpful in directing us to a wonderful restaurant for our dinner. He even directed us to the store that provides him with the breakfast ham so that we may purchase to take home. We will return whenever we are in the area!!!

We stayed at Stonewall Jackson Inn after finding it on the web. We couldn't have been more happy withy our stay. Wayne, the Innkeeper was a gracious and generous host, inviting us to accompany him to a concert at James Madison University where another of his guests was performing. Wayne made us feel so at home in Harrisonberg, we will be looking for excuses to return.

Beautiful, well-appointed room. Incredibly friendly and welcoming host. Amazing breakfasts. Exceptional service - when we asked about laundry, Wayne and Pam offered to wash our stuff and delivered it back to our door next morning, all dry and neatly folded, at no extra charge. Staying here was a real highlight.

We found the Stonewall Jackson Inn by searching Google for B&Bs in Harrisonburg. After reviewing the dozen or so Google presented, we settled on the SJI because of location, apparent ambiance presented by its interesting website, and an interest in meeting Wayne, the innkeeper. We are satisfied with our choice on all counts. Well-written directions brought us to the door, first try. Check-in went very smoothly, and we settled into our room within minutes of arrival. Our well-appointed room, the Lee room, included a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and we even found ‘extra’ pillows in the closet. While Wayne, our host, provides gratis sodas and water from a refrigerator in the kitchen (as well as real, glass, glasses of various styles), a small refrigerator in the room keeps the traveler’s personal beverages cold. If asked, Wayne also provides an informative overview of Harrisonburg lore and James Madison University facts, as well as perceptive recommendations for dinner in the historic center of town. An easy 15-minute walk from the Inn places guests at Court House Square (maybe 20 minutes back up the short rise) with its historic sites and restaurants. Wayne also presents his memorable breakfast with aplomb. We first learned of it by enticing early morning baking aromas that filled the Inn and, upon arrival at a time of our choice, received a complete, individually prepared, breakfast that literally lasted all day. One can eat on the deck or in a cozy dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Every whim is met with pleasant, affirmative service. When we felt we could eat no more, we received a luscious poppy seed cake. Will power may be needed. If anyone entertains the notion of becoming an innkeeper, a stay with Wayne at the Stonewall Jackson Inn will inform candidates for such ventures how to create an ambiance where visitors become personal guests and leave with the intention of returning. I am so glad I have the option of writing a review for this place. In addition to how beautiful the grounds and actual Inn is, the whole atmosphere is relaxing. Checkout time is 11 and I could barely bring myself to leave! Breakfast was delicious, actually, beyond delicious and I couldn't stop raving about the coffee! But the most noteworthy aspect of the whole experience at Stonewall Jackson in is Rudi, the substitute inn keeper. She made the stay there beyond anything I could have hoped for, we threatened to take her home with us. So to all of you who may not be able to make it in time to meet her, I'm sorry...so maybe you better hurry and book a stay so you can, haha!

My fiancé and I were lucky enough to stumble upon this delightful inn while motorcycling through Harrisonburg, PA. We knew we wanted to spend the evening at a B&B, and stopped for suggestions. We were pointed to the Stonewall Jackson Inn by a local merchant. What a wonderful addition to our weekend! The home was charming, and the staff attentive without being overbearing. Our room was great, and decorated with the same understated elegance as rest of the Inn. Breakfast was delicious, and the coffee fresh. We are already planning to return in the fall for another visit with Wayne and his delightful staff at The Stonewall Jackson Inn.

Dear Wayne & Staff, Once again, thank you for a wonderful weekend experience. Staying in the Ulysses Grant Suite made us feel right at home, although I expected to see a portrait of Robert E. My friend and I had an overnight stay at the Stonewall Jackson over Memorial Day weekend. I have to say that it was simply fabulous!! The inn had warm and charming atmosphere made all the more incredible by the staff and terrific food. Tony and Shannon were kind, and wonderfully pleasant to talk to as well as many of the other staffers I saw. As an elementary teacher who desperately needed an early summer break, I can tell you this was a wonderful place close to home where you can simply get away and relax.

We recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg, VA. We were returning north from Florida via Rock Hill, SC. We were looking for a B and B on RT 81 going north to Hershey PA. This was a good choice. It is just up the hill from downtown Harrisonburg and a little longer walk to the James Madison University campus. Tony met us at the door and introduced us to the staff and the layout. It was clean and cozy and we had a great sleep. Everything worked and the house was clean , well organized, relaxed and welcoming We had a delicious breakfast prepared by Wayne and Tony served on the sun porch, Sunday morning, after returning from Mass. We walked to dinner at Joshua Wilton House the evening before for a delightful dinner and arriving early for our reservation waited on the wrap around porch overlooking Main St. Jean and Jerry

We had a very nice romantic getaway at the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg. The house was very nicley restored and decorated, not overcrowded with antiques or kitschy. There were a number of other guests, but I did not feel crowded or our personal space intruded upon. We werew able to kekep to ourselves if we wanted, or interact with other guests or the hosts. The owner and staff who work there are really cool; they make you feel genuinely welcome but don't come across as insincere in their hospitality. They are friendly and engaging, with very interesting personal histories and are willing to share themselves if you want to go there. If not, they are sensitive to not force themselves or their stories upon their guests. Personally, I would have liked to stay a couple more days to get to know Wayne (the owner) better. The breakfasts are realy great; they take pride in fixing the food well. There are two young men who help out with breakfasts; again, their calm and friendly demeanors help set the tone for the day. It's interesting in that there is no choice for breakfasts; you eat what is prepared (there are other cereal self-serve options as well, however). I found it nice that I did not have to make up my mind about breakfast; it was simply given to us. The Shenandoah National Park is about 30 minutes away; you do not have to get on the interstate to get to the park. It is beautiful with lots of good hiking trails (fairly steep terrain, however). There is also a beautifu arboretum on the campus of James Madison University which is located in Harrisonburg about 10 minutes away from the Inn. It's quite a large parklike aera with lots of good walking trails; in early May we hit some nice colors/flowers. The historic part of downtown Harrisonburg is a work in progress; there are a couple fun student-oriented resturants/bars and there are ongoing efforts to revitalize and re-invest.

We recently had an opportunity to overnight in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at The Stonewall Jackson Inn, a restored 19th century mansion. Our stay was very pleasant and we plan to return when we visit Harrisonburg again. Our room, the Philip Sheridan (all ten rooms are named for Civil War generals), was clean, fresh, bright, quiet and very comfortable – a combination of qualities that’s hard to beat. The inn’s owner, Dr. Wayne Engel, and his staff are very friendly and engaging, adding to the enjoyment of our stay. Wayne’s Sunday morning breakfast was a real treat and truly one that we’ll remember. For Civil War buffs visiting this historical area of the Shenandoah Valley, a stay at the Stonewall Jackson will make you feel like you’re home among family and friends. All others will thoroughly enjoy the experience, as well.

My boyfriend and I live 4 hours away from each other. I looked for a place to stay that was in Harrisonburg because it is about ½ way between us. I looked at the local hotel and Bed and Breakfast. The prices were comparable. I decided to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, what a good choice. Once I reserved a room online (so easy), I was contacted immediately through email by the staff regarding my questions. I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a couple’s massage (something I’ve always wanted to do). Even though it was only a week away, Wayne and his staff went out of their way to make my wish come true. When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and shown around the house, which made us feel like we were truly welcome. I remember my comment as we were settling in our room, “I feel like I am at Grandma’s house.” The rooms were so clean and comfortable. We waited down by the fire, as things were set up for our massages that were given right in our room, and browsed through the information regarding local restaurants, which was provided by Wayne’s staff. Our messages were very relaxing. After a wonderful German meal (our favorite food), we came back to the Inn and relaxed in our room. In the morning we took our time getting up and were greeted in the kitchen by Wayne and Tony, the same two that greeted us the day before when we checked in. Our breakfast started with coffee for him and tea for me. We were given fresh fruit and juice while our breakfast was being prepared. We were served eggs benedict with smoked salmon, bacon and stewed apples. DELICIOUS!!!!! As we were ready to check out, Wayne and Tony asked us about our stay and talked to us like family. What a FABULOUS weekend we had at Wayne’s home – The Stonewall Jackson Inn. I look forward to staying there again.

If you love magnificent old houses, a great location for getting around VA, and French toast that is exceptional, then you have to stop here. My combined family reunion, genealogical research and novel writing trip was certain to be a disaster from the start, either in distances I had to cover in a fixed period of time, or finding a good place to eat. The Stonewall Jackson WAS easy to find (as promised, even in the dark!), Wayne was very welcoming and a huge bonus was the nearby "Clementines" that he recomended, a five star surprise in this little college town, and the town's historical interest to me. The room was quaint (THANK GOD, NO MODERNIZATION EXCEPT FOR THE CONVENIENCES), clean and comfortable. What more could you ask? Maybe meeting up and having breakfast with the Annie Moses Band, who were also fans of The Stonewall Jackson. We'll be going back soon!

We also visited the historic area, which consisted of shops and great restaurants. The Stonewall Jackson was extremely clean(which is a must for me) and the breakfasts were delicious and filling enough to hold us through lunch. We'd highly recommend this to anyone!

I was traveling alone from Philadelphia to South Carolina when I ran into icey roads near Harrisonburg and decided to get off the highway. Fortunately for me, I took the first Harrisonburg exit and started watching for hotels. The first one I came to was filled up but they recommended the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B just down the road. Again - lucky for me. I was greeted at the Inn by the charming owner who made me feel at home right away. When I saw the reasonable rates and the beautifully appointed rooms, I was pretty sure I wanted to stay; however, after he treated me to a cup of hot chocolate while I sat by the fire to thaw out and described the rooms, the ammenities, the breakfast, and offered to go out in the icey conditions to bring in my luggage - well, that sealed the deal. There were several other guests who had taken refuge from the storm - most of them guided to the Inn by their GPS. I joined another person traveling alone to go to dinner at a nearby restaurant (Clementine) - and the food and service were truly outstanding. Back at the Inn for the evening I enjoyed chatting with other travelers, then sat by the fire to finish my book, and eventually sank into the very comfortable bed under luxury sheets - what a treat!. The next morning, I awoke to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon frying. The breakfast was wonderful - joice of juices, delicious coffee, fruit cup, eggs benedict, and mouth watering fried apples - way beyond what I have experienced at other B&B's. I really hated to leave the Stonewall Jackson Inn. I will definitely be back - and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley.

From the time I called to speek with Wayne about setting up my reservation for New Years, to the time we Departed I was met with real southern hospitality.

Enjoyed a two night stay celebrating our anniversary and New Year's Eve. Breakfast was great both days. Looking forward to returning when the weather is warmer and the grounds are green and flowering.

We went at the Stonewall Jackson Inn for a peaceful New Years getaway, and that's exactly what we got. I loved the history of the home, and the Civil War theme that is evident throughout the home. Wayne is an excellent cook, whose interesting life makes him a great story teller. I recommend staying in the Chamberlain room. It is on the first floor, and is very private. It also has its own fireplace, which makes the room very romantic. I can't wait to have another break from work, so I can get back to the Stonewall Jackson Inn.

Our recent stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn located in Harrisonburg, Virginia could not have been better. The Inn was immaculate and our hosts were gracious, helpful, accommodating and in every way eager to please. The breakfast was, indeed, one to remember, but that can be truthfully said of all aspects of our time at the Inn. We highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and plan to stay there on future overnight visits to Harrisonburg.

We day hike in the midpart of the Shenandoah National Park 3 to 4 times a year. Harrisonburg, VA is an easy 25 miles drive west of the Park’s Skyline Drive and a natural place to stay. In a first visit more than five years ago, we found the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg to be an exceptional place to spend the weekend. We’ve never stayed elsewhere since. The house, grounds, and guest rooms are roomy and a visual treat throughout. The food and service provided by the Inn’s staff are very good – and quickly come to seem like home. Over the course of our stays, we have experienced gorgeous sunrises, sunsets, and the occasional total lunar eclipse (which turned out to be totally clouded over back in Washington DC) as part of the package deal. We’ve found the Inn’s large living room area, with its sofas and several fireplaces, to be a great place to relax and read for an extended period – and a very workable antidote to weather outside that was supposed to be sunny but turned out not to be. Harrionsburg is a walkable college town, and Stonewall Jackson Inn well placed as a point to start. We keep coming back for good reason.

Marie Christine Mallen

My daughter is a senior at JMU and I have been staying at the Stonewall Jackson since I discovered it when she was a freshman. The Inn is comfortable, beautifully appointed and spotless. Wayne, the inkeeper, is welcoming, helpful and cooks a fabulous breakfast. My daughter will even get herself out of bed on a weekend for his breakfasts, and that's saying a lot! It is a real treat to spend a weekend here and I look forward to it each time I visit JMU.

My family and friends have made an annual visit to Harrisonburg, VA for many years, and the past 7, we have stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. It is excellent in every way but most especially the sincere warmth and comfort provided by the owner and Innkeepers is the thing that sticks in my mind the most. The rooms are nice and quiet and the beds are superb. The breakfast is always excellent. I also especially enjoy the many sitting areas around the house to just enjoy the conversation with friends. The Inn has become an integral part of the entire reunion experience and some occasional trips in between. I highly recommend the Stonewall Jacksonn Inn!

We have been renting out the entire inn for JMU homecoming for the past six years. It's a great experience and provides a spacious, friendly, and accomadating home for our large group. The location, host and hostess, rooms, kitchen (breakfast yum), common areas, and plenty of parking make this an ideal home base for our homecoming weekend.

we can not say enough positive things about the stonewall jackson inn in harrisonburg, va.. every aspect of our stay made us feel special-- from the attnetiveness and thoroughness of the innkeepers and their staff, to the unbelievably cozy, clean and inviting rooms and common rooms of this wonderful mansion.. the art, antiques, windows, huge trees, total charm effect (not to mention the 'unforgettable breakfast!!) all combined to make us glow with happiness! we will definitely return, definitely recommend this inn to everyone who may ever be even remotely in the vacinity of harrisonburg, and we will always cherish the memory of our first stay at the stonewall jackson inn.. by the way, it was the BEST night's sleep (and a great afternoon nap) that i personally have ever had! TOTAL comfort...

This was my first stay at a B & B and I was delighted. I don't have one negative comment other than I wish it had been a longer stay. Thanks for a wondeful experience.

Our daughter is a senior at JMU. We travel from new Jersey and during the past four years we've stayed at other motels & inns in the area. Once we stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, we never went any where else. We can not praise the Stonewall Jackson Inn and its staff enough. It truly has become our home away from home.
5 on November 01, 2008
Despite having several children go to JMU, this was our first stay here. It was delightful, with entertaining and helpful hosts, great accommodations and a terrific breakfast. The location is convenient with excellent restaurants in walking distance. Definitely a place to return to!

Stonewall Jackson Inn mérite son logo "A night's delight- a breakfast to remember" Chantal du Québec - - - - - By internet, we had made a reservation for one night in Stonewall Jackson Inn, during a fortnight tourism trip in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC. We founded that so agreable that we stayed another nignt, so we could better enjoy the Blue Ridge mountains and the charm of the inn. Comfortable beds, nice and elegant decoraion, interesting exchanges about History, the places to go, etc. And nice helps given in a so friendly way (for instance, they helped us to plug - outside - a too large electrical apparatus). And those breakfasts: Quality, variety, beauty. True meals, which gave us the occasion to discover regional products . We were cold and tired motorcyclist and found the Inn on the GPS. We were greeted by the very friendly and accommodating Wayne, the Innkeepper. The room we chose was comfortable and clean. The breakfast in the morning was the best. Kept us going all day long.

Absolutely delightful in every way! My college roommate and I were in Harrisonburg for a college reunion and wanted to stay in a charming location. The Stonewall Jackson Inn exceeded our expectations and Innkeepers Wayne and Debbie could not be more welcoming. Wayne is a fabulous cook and we loved the breakfasts both mornings. The Belle Boyd room was perfect for us with beautiful antique furniture and two marvelously comfortable beds. It was convenient to both James Madison University and the nearby shops and restaurants of downtown Harrisonburg. I would go back in a minute!

We came across the Stonewall Jackson by accident but were very glad we did. The welcome was warm and the room well equipped and comfortable. Our host had lots of advice on places to eat and arranged a table for us in a very lively but fun place that still served good food. The following morning we enjoyed our breakfast on the terrace, cooked to order and just as we liked it. Nothing was too much trouble but we couldn't, in all honesty, say it was the best B&B in the world (as Wayne joked that it was); it was probably the best one we stayed in during our time in the States in July 2008. Thanks guys - we'd love to call again if we're in that part of the world.

One of the best things about the Stonewall Jackson Inn is the house itself. The 19th century house is beautifully mainained by the inkeepers. The host for our stay, Wayne Engel, was very knowledgeable about the area and the history around it. He was extremely helpful when it came to activities we could do in Harrisonburg, and what restaraunts to dine at. Wayne also prepared a spectacular breakfast, and we loved that he makes breakfast at your convenience. In our room (the Robert E. Lee), we found a spotless, beautifully maintained room, with little snacks like Oreos and cheese crackers, and a binder full of info on the house and the city we were staying in. Downstairs in the kitchen Wayne keeps two small refrigerators for the guests to help themselves to sodas and bottled water. All of these pleasant little touches made our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn fabulous. We know exactly where to stay if we find ourselves in Harrisonburg, VA again.

We have been to many better b&b's with better accommodations and better breakfasts. Bathroom was very small. We thought the rooms were overpriced compared to other b&b's. Breakfast was good, but the serving was small. Doubt we would stay there again.

Our stay was a pleasurable, relaxing experience, certainly enhanced by our innkeeper Wayne's attention to ensuring our stay was memorable. Our room was extremely well appointed, with a very comfortable bed and all amenities you would expect from an upper end hotel. Our breakfast prepared by Wayne was simply an outstanding finish to our stay at the Inn.

We loved our stay at Stonewall Jackson. We were headed to a motel for the night, and there was a special price sign outside the B&B so we stopped. Wayne and Peter were great. We got our room, and some helpful information when we arrived. The next morning breakfast was served and it was wonderful. We found our talks with Peter fascinating. When it was time to leave we noticed we had a flat tire, and Wayne helped us blow up the tire, and directed us to a station that could fix it for us. They were both very hospitable, and helpful Jim and Sharon Sellers

Innkeepers Wayne and Peter were ex eptionally gracious and hospitable toward our small group of bicyclists touring the Shenandoah Valley, providing secure storage for our bikes and filling our water bottles with ice water. They are excellent cooks, serving a breakfast I'm sure we'll talk about on many tours to come. Within walking distance of historic downtown Harrisonburg, the beautifully restored house is a wonderful respite.

My partner and I travel to Hburg now and then to visit friends, and ended up staying here when our regular B&B was booked. It was a nice change & we now plan to stay there again in the future. What made the place for us was the friendliness of Wayne & Peter, who really did take efforts to make us feel at "home." The breakfast the next morning was delicious too--& not overly sweet or filling, as it has been at other B&Bs we've visited. Plus (and this was a plus for us!) we were the only gay couple visting that particular night/morning, but not once did we feel uncomfortable or out of place. A very friendly/welcoming place to stay!

the stonewall jackson inn in harrisonburg, va truly is our second home...wayne and peter go out of their way to provide the very best in all aspects of our stay..my wife and i have been down there twice and we are making it our annual anniversary trip..for history buffs the inn truly has a civil war feel to it..the rooms are cozy and the info provided in the welcome packets gives you a wide variety of activities to experience and enjoy. from skyline drive to wine country to a wide array of caverns to visit, shopping, and dining, you will not be bored in your stay...the breakfasts are phenomenal.. from the eggs benedict with smoked salmon to the french toast with virginia country ham..(definitely recommend!!!)..you will understand the meaning of "a breakfast to remember". to give you an idea of the level of commitment they have to give you a stay to remember..my wife and i celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary last month..wayne was going to make reservations for us at a local inn serving wonderful food.unfortunately the inn was rented out for the night..so he made reservations for us at a restaurant about 25 miles south of harrisonburg..and gave us 20 dollars out of his own pocket for gas...not to shabby..we will be back next year and for many years to come..

We were part of the cycling group mentioned in a previous review and couldn't agree more. They were very accommodating to the focus of our vacation, cycling on the low traffic, scenic roads in the Shenandoah Valley. Peter was especially helpful in accommodating the requests of our cycling group. They cleared out a place under the deck to park bikes, provided extra ice and water. Eggs Benedict with Salmon or black coffee with half a piece of toast or anything in between seemed to be no problem at all. The property and rooms are very clean and well maintained. It's within easy walking distance of many of the town's shops and restaurants. The Inkeepers have negotiated free dessert or discount on dinner with a couple of the nearby eating establishments, that's always nice. We would highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and look forward to our next visit.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn was a delightful experience for our wedding night! Wayne in all his charm, showed us to our room, and was a very warm host. Peter cooked a magnificent breakfast for us the next morning, salmon and eggs benedict, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee, which we enjoyed out on the patio. If you're looking for a B and B in the Harrisonburg area, this is the place. Thanks for the good food and warm hospitality!!

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary at this romantic B&B and it was an absolutely perfect experience! The inn is beautifully restored and decorated in the Civil War era. It is clean and comfortable with modern conveniences. Reasonably priced. Ideally located within walking distance of restaurants and shops. A short drive to wineries and nighttime entertainment. The innkeepers, Wayne, Tanja, and Peter, are relaxed and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. We highly recommend the massage therapy we enjoyed in the privacy of our room. We will definitely be back to celebrate again next year.

This was our third trip to Stonewall Jackson. We come to Harrisonburg to visit our daughter and her family frequently, and we try to stay at Stonewall Jackson at least once a year. Wayne and his staff are so welcoming, and the Inn is so cozy and homey. Of course the breakfasts are always absolutely wonderful. We recommend the Inn to anyone who is visiting the area, for business or leisure, as a truly relaxing place to unwind.

My husband and I found the Stonewall Jackson Inn when looking for a place to stay in Harrisonburg to attend our daughter's concert at JMU. We were impressed by the friendliness of Wayne, his son Roger, and their new innkeeper hosts. They remember our names and treat us like family whenever we come. Our daughter is a Sophomore now, and we dread the day we no longer have a regular schedule to come and visit Wayne and our friends at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Maybe our youngest will go there too!

This was our second visit to the Stonewall Jackson Inn and it will not be our last. Our first visit was a Christmas gift from my son & daughter-in-law. We had a wonderful visit then, and knew that we would return. The rooms are beautiful & the atmosphere is very relaxing and inviting. Wayne & Peter were very helpful with information & recommendations for the local resturants. The made to order breakfasts were excellant and a wonderful start of the day. Thanks to Wayne & Peter for their wonderful hospitality.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is without a doubt the best B & B I've experienced. The building and grounds are beautiful and well kept, the rooms are lovely, comfortable and clean. But what caused me to return many times was the warm and friendly atmosphere created by the owner Wayne and innkeeper Peter. I really felt like they had opened their home to me and that I was welcome to relax and enjoy by sitting on the large wrap around porch or on the patio under the wisteria. They were always available but never pushy and welcomed me with genuine interest and appreciation every time I arrived. After driving 12 hours from NH to VA to visit my daughter at James Madison University, it was such a relief to land at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. And, did I mention the fabulous breakfast?

If you happen to visit Harrisonburg, VA you have to make sure you stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn! The first time I stayed in Harrisonburg, VA on business, I didn't know about this place. The second time however, I made sure to stay there! What a great place! Peaceful, clean, cozy, quaint, friendly, historical, unique, traditional....the list goes on and on. And the breakfast....wow! That's all I have to say about the breakfast: wow! Wayne and Peter are both very friendly and they make sure that each and every one of their guests does not leave from there unsatisfied! Try this place. You won't regret it.

This was our first experience with B&B stays in the U.S. We quickly discovered that after a day on the road, it's far superior to staying in even the top rated of hotels -- no noisy people, just a nice relaxing afternoon and evening in a homelike setting followed by as fine a breakfast the next morning as my Mother could have made from scratch! The nice peaceful and quiet setting in the Virginia mountains was most relaxing. Hats off to Wayne and Peter for the superb job! We'll be back again on our next trip North.

The father-son team of Wayne and Roger have created a lovely B&B in a most interesting Shenandoah Valley town. The Belle Boyd Room with its two beds is perfect for traveling companions like us, a pair of sisters, and would be accessible to the handicapped. We loved the outstanding breakfasts and appreciated the information on touring the area. This property is highly recommended!
