The Swift House Inn is located in the charming New England town of Middlebury, Vermont. The buildings that comprise the Swift House Inn today are the product of over a century of adaptation to the needs of the Swift and Stewart families that lived here from 1815 until 1981. The Main House, built in 1814 by Samuel Swift, was the home of former Governor John W. Stewart and his daughter Jessica Stewart Swift. The Victorian Gate House, built in 1906, graces the entrance to Stewart Lane. The Carriage House, built in 1886, to house the horses and carriages, was renovated in 1990 as luxury accommodations.

The Swift House Inn is the most accommodating B&B for bicycle touring I’ve ever encountered. It turns out, owner Dan Brown is himself a long-haul bike tourist. He and co-owner, Michele Brown, understand and anticipate bicycle tourists needs. They provided a secure place to store our bikes, the Gatehouse garage, which includes bike parking, and a professional Park bike repair stand. We stayed close by in the Gatehouse. And the breakfast served in the main house was superb and ever changing. We liked staying here so much, we extended another day (well, the awful forecast also figured in our decision to lay over). We were pleased with the staff [for the most part], and the inn is very well kept and clean. But it lacked the little things that, to us, separate an inn from a motel. Our breakfast the first morning of our stay almost caused us to cancel dinner reservations. Lackluster, served on ice cold plates, and the waitress just seemed not to have her heart in serving. Glad we didn't, as dinner, on Valentine's Day, no less- was outstanding. Wanda was our server on morning 2, and she was an absolute pro and obviously in love with her work.

This bed and breakfast was outstanding! Their warm hospitality and cozy rooms allowed you to feel like you were on vacation but a homey feel. Would definitely stay again.

Just a short post-holiday get-away for my wife and I and we could not have asked for a better place. The room was huge and beautiful with a fireplace and everything would could have asked for. The staff were amazing, the food was great and sometime soon we’ll be coming back for another stay.

We just returned from our third visit to this inn in four years and have enjoyed every visit. On every occasion, we stayed in the Gate House. Yes, we did hear traffic as advertised, but never to the point where it is a distraction. There are five rooms in the Gate House and a great salon with games, a Kurig coffee maker, and a tray of cookies. It feels just like home. The rooms are well appointed with great beds. The dining is great and we had one of the best steaks ever last year. Breakfast is also excellent and a great way to start the day! The owners and staff are very attentive and do everything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. One of our favourite plays and we will return!

My husband and I just returned from the Swift House a couple days ago and our experience was nothing short of wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful, making us feel welcomed and at home. There were personal touches all over the house, from the homemade cookies in the hall to the house owners/managers bringing us breakfast personally in the dining hall. Our room was very clean, comfortable and spacious and having a bathroom attached to the room made our stay that much more pleasant. The setting was breathtaking and we especially enjoyed having breakfast out on the terrace. Overall we have nothing negative to say about our experience and will definitely be recommending and returning to the Swift House Inn! staff was friendly

I brought my fiance here for a long weekend to celebrate her birthday. What a great time. We stayed two nights, and were pleasantly surprised! Middlebury is a beautiful scenic town, and we were able to enjoy the quaintness, mere minutes from the inn. Just a few miles away, we were also able to snowshoe to the summit if snake mountain. The Swift House inn is very central, and I am already planning our trip back. We stayed in the the gorgeous Woodbury room. We perfected the night by popping some champagne, and hanging in front of the perfectly romantic burning fire, right in the room! The staff very courteous, and helpful, and the service was impeccable. We will be back...

My husband and I stayed here last September while bicycling with Vermont Bicycle Tours. Every aspect of this Inn was lovely: staff, furnishings, meals, grounds. If we are in this area in the future we'll definited stay again!

Our friend booked the Swift House Inn for her wedding guests and we were delighted with the entire experience. We stayed for 3 nights in the Alexander Twilight Room for about $400 (we got 18% off for staying 3 nights) which included a WONDERFUL, full breakfast each morning for the four of us -- which made this price a real value for our family. Breakfast included cereals, homemade granola, fresh fruit (fresh berries, grapefruit, melon, etc.), yogurt, juice and coffee and then you get to choose an entree from the menu (eggs made to order, bacon, sausage, french toast, pancakes which were all very good!). Our room and bed were very, very comfortable. They added a cot at no extra charge for our daughter (age 6), and our little guy (age 4) slept on a cute little sofa and he was very comfortable. Overall the service was great and every morning the owner herself greeted us at breakfast and assisted the wait staff. There is a beautiful courtyard with beautiful flowers and benches for sitting and just absorbing the beautiful surroundings. One review called this a "hotel" but this is not at all the feel that we got from the place. We stayed in the house by the main road because it was the least expensive, but we honestly were not bothered at all by the traffic. This house has a great sitting area downstairs with coffee, tea, and cookies for the taking. Summary: It is clear that the owners take great pride and care in managing this inn and if we ever visited Middlebury again we would stay here no doubt!!! We had to leave a review because we were just so pleased with our experience and found it to be a great value. P.S. I checked the other cheap drive in motels and they were not cheap - still around $100 per night without breakfast so staying at this beautiful inn was a no brainer!!! We started our innkeeping career in Annapolis, Maryland in 1996 with a 4 room Bed & Breakfast, called the Georgian House. After 5 years, we decided to leave our other careers and take on innkeeping full time. The new adventure had us leaving Annapolis and buying the Pilgrim's Inn on Deer Isle, Maine were we stayed for 3 years. Finally in 2004 we arrived in Middlebury, VT as the owners of the Swift House inn.
