Thoroughly enjoyed a recent 2nd overnight visit. Everything during our stay was excellent and we were so pleased to see the addition of the new bar area. Great gathering place when traveling with friends. Highly recommend this B&B.

This B&B (more like an Inn) is quite nice while a bit remote. The room price is a bit high for its remoteness and the price for dinner is also high (although we did not eat dinner there). The staff is very friendly. The TV setup in our room (#5) was awkward as one would have to sit on the bed sideways to view the TV. The one main complaint we had was the pillows which were cheap foam and VERY firm pillows. Our necks still are sore. One would think that an Inn as expensive as this one is would have nice down pillows. We stayed at a B&B in Frederick, MD that was half the price and much nicer. I think at this Inn they are relying on their past reputation. They have done some nice upgrades to the bar and the morning breakfast was VERY nice.

Wonderful rooms and outstanding meals! A way to turn off/block the outside light would have been nice. No tissues in the room may have been an oversight.

We spent two memorable nights at this lovely inn in Virginia horse country in late September 2016. Everything about L'Auberge Provencal was delightful; the room with sizable porch, the sitting room, the steam shower, all the amenities were perfect. Breakfast was substantial and delicious and I can't say enough about both dinners; the first in the new bar/lounge, bistro style, and the second was one of the best if the not the best tasting menu we have very experienced. Staff were gracious, helpful and quick to respond when needed. We will most definitely be back.

I booked a room at L'Auberge Provencale to get away from the job and DC for a little while, and also to do some writing. When Celeste found out, she gave me a free upgrade to a larger, quieter room -- how thoughtful! The place is lovely and peaceful, the room was very comfortable, the garden in front of my windows was a delight to see. The food and wine was excellent and I was interested to see that the State Arboretum was just a few miles away, so I walked through their herb garden and some of the tree plantations. (Too hot to do much more walking -- the place is 600 acres -- but there is a driving trail that takes you all around the property.). Best of all I got a lot of writing done. I will definitely be back!

We had a birthday celebration at l'Auberge Provencal and decided to really celebrate by spending the night at their Villa! We were not disappointed! The tasting menu was superb, and our suite at the Villa even better! We had a truly wonderful evening in a charming place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at L'Auberge Provencale Bed and Breakfast. We originally booked room #12 in the villa, which is a few miles down the road from the main building and restaurant. The owners were so kind and gave us a free upgrade to #13 on arrival. Our room is charming in every way with many modern amenities, making us feel that we are in the middle of France. We particularly enjoyed the array of books, magazines and games in the common area. Later we had the chance to look at other rooms in the building, which are all thoughtfully designed and very lovely. We had their four course dinner and the food was wonderfully prepared - fresh, innovative, delicious and beautifully presented. The breakfast had many choices and was freshly prepared by the owner himself. The environment is also beautiful and peaceful.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at L'Auberge Provencale in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. The room we stayed in was very charming. The two dinners were wonderfully prepared; the food was innovative and beautifully presented. The croissants at breakfast are expertly prepared; makes you feel like you are sitting in a cafe in Paris. The added bar area is sleek and sophisicated. It is a great addition to the Inn.

We stopped at l'auberge for two nights while we did some hiking in the Shenandoah. We had the room with an outdoor seating area which was very nice for morning coffee and watching the sunset, The staff was very attentive and helpful, the meals were great. Breakfast had many choices, new bar offered great small plate options and I he 4 course dinner was outstanding. The only downside was the nearby road could be noisy at times.

We had an amazing night. The food is wonderful! Several dishes where i literally felt that particular dish was the best version of it i had ever had. This spans a wide variety of fare as well (seafood, steak, american, etc). Excellent assortment of wine. The accommodations are great. The staff is always present, always accommodating and friendly! i go here once a year whenever i can for special occasions!!

This was our second stay L'Auberge Provençale. Many improvements since our last visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our accommodations and dinner. The setting is lovely. Yes, L'Auberge Provençale is adjacent to a well traveled road, but we were not disturbed, except mid morning as the occasional truck or RV rumbled by. We simply closed the shade, and reveled in the pastoral view out the rear windows. Our dinner was excellent, service, friendly and helpful though spotty.

Friends gave us a stay here as a gift and it was magnificent! Can't say enough good things about the place to do it justice. The drive there was beautiful, the home was gorgeous and the food and wine was spectacular. Gave it a 4 on value only because the meal was very pricey. Not something I can afford to do often. But, for a special occasion....go for it indeed!!!

Delightful country inn, with very friendly and supportive staff. Breakfast is magnificent. Dinner on site is very high-end and expensive French. Rooms are consistent with other beautiful VA B&B in historic homes. Check separate restaurant reviews (e.g. Open Table); they're accurate.

My fiancé and I loved the coziness of the room, Jacuzzi tub, and breakfast that was served but the staff seemed somewhat distracted due to all the construction and renovation going on around the property. When I checked in they asked what day I would like the cookies and hot cider brought to the room - I asked for Saturday (they forgot), they didn't have the champagne with flutes waiting in the room on the Friday (day of check in) like I had asked, and last I had asked for breakfast to be packaged up to go for us the Monday morning and they told us that 645 am would not be a problem and we didn't get our breakfast as we left approximately 7am. I felt that we paid good money for Suite 11 and for us to be forgotten about was a bit disheartening. Plus I understand with the renovations that breakfast was brought to the room but 930 is sometimes a little late - I would have preferred it closer to 9 or to at least have known that it was going to be delivered at that time. I loved all the added on amenities and the wine tour was perfect but felt it was a bit overpriced. With all that said I would still come back - as it was we had just an amazing visit and felt very relaxed after we left.

An outstanding stay. The staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. The room was as advertised: roomy, warm, fireplace, a view of fields and cattle - great french country ambience. The walls and ceiling were not quite as thick as I would like and there was some noise but I was able to sleep well on the comfy bed. The included breakfast was delicious with plenty of options. The dinner was very expensive but delicious - 5 stars. This was a great anniversary trip!

Enjoyed the bed and breakfast thoroughly, delicious food, friendly service, very comfortable room. For the price in this area and all of the fantastic reviews, I was a bit surprised that some details went overlooked--the "music" in the dining room at night was a radio station with many commercials! And we had to go outside to the office to ask for soap for our room. Obviously nothing major, not a deal breaker, just slight room for improvement.

Beautiful property and very nice room. All of the staff were excellent. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were super soft. The steam shower was a nice touch. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent (both the food and the service). The one negative was our breakfast. When we arrived it was if they were not expecting us. They reset a table for us (dirty tablecloth) and then prepared the food. The small touches were not there (no butter served at our table, no sugar in container at table, fruit salad empty at "buffet"). Felt like we were an afterthought.

Perfect location for a Fall get-away at the north end of the Shenandoah Valley. Excellent on-site restaurant, but a little pricey for more than one night--I would say outstanding except for the price. My husband and I just returned from a wonderful, relaxing weekend away. We found this B and B from my brother who had been there a few months back. We were greeted in the office by Joshua and Celeste they were very kind and gave us lots of suggestions of where to go. On our way down we stopped by Linden Vineyards Joshua had suggested that when I called a few days before our arrival, it was a lovely non commercial vineyard which we enjoyed. Our room was spacious and there was a lot of thought put into what a guest might need such as a nice blowdryer, wonderful soaps, lotions and powders and the room and bathroom were very clean. We took a nice nap before our dinner. We thought the food was very good , I was pleased with my chicken although they could have been more generous with the sides. My husband ate veal but the portion was small. While the food was fancy and rich the portions were very small for the price. The waiters were all very kind and knowledgable. We loved the beds, sheets, pillows and blankets and had a great nights sleep. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and the portions were very generous to our surprise. We spent a nice amount of time talking to Joshua and Celeste at breakfast and they gave us great suggestions as what to do and see in Winchester. We did some great shopping in Winchester and walked a lot it is a charming town with very friendly people. We saw a movie and ate dinner in town. We got back and had another great night of sleep and woke again to a most delicious breakfast. When we said goodbye to Joshua we felt as though we were saying goodbye to an old friend we shared many laughs during our stay. All in all we were very pleased with the service and the accomodations our only complaint was the portions at dinner. We would recommend this place to friends and we hope to return in the future.

It is difficult to rank what we liked best. The quite charm, the warm hospitality, the grounds, and the food were all first rate. In the end, though, I have to give an edge to the food, which was (and I am not exaggerating) world class--particularly dinner. But at breakfast too, the delicate scones and the croissants still make me smile.

L'Auberge was a beautiful and relaxing place to spend out mini-moon. There was attention to detail at every point during our stay, from the beautifully decorated rooms, to the cheese plate waiting for us on arrival, to a 3 course dinner and breakfast the following morning. The food was phenomenal. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone who appreciates the finer things in life. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it in my opinion!

The staff was very pleasant and helpful, the room room was great, the food was amazing, The only hitch in our dinning experience was that we asked for coffee at the end of dinner but never received it, however we were not billed for it and were having a great time and didn't mind or care to ask for it.

We've come to L'Auberge Provencale for a few years now. It truly is a lovely place to stay, but I can't help but feel for the price it falls a little short. Perhaps I am being harsh. I feel though, at the price for these rooms one would expect certain attention to detail, finer towels, a makeup mirror, duroflame logs for the fireplace, pay per view movie selection other than skin flicks would be nice. The food needs to be unparalleled,at an inn like this, but the hollandaise fell short, the monkfish was dry and chicken sausage no matter how well seasoned just can't measure up to a traditional pork sausage due to its rubbery texture. All the rest was, as usual, superb, as one would expect. The service was impeccable and the staff outstanding.

My friend and I who live in different parts of the country travel together every few years. Thus, we were looking forward to catching up during our long weekend together at L'Auberge. Upon arriving, we found our rooms to be quite cold. We thus called the front desk and they said the innkeeper would be there momentarily. When he arrived, he stated that the heat had not yet been turned on and that "most people like this temperature". When I relayed to him that I had been ill and have been chilled, he asked if we wanted space heaters for our rooms. Seeing that there was no alternative, we said we did. When he returned with the heaters, he looked at both of us and said,"You don't look happy." We both replied that we were not exactly happy since the temperature was dropping into the 40's that night. The innkeeper then said, "You may want to consider going elsewhere." While we were surprised at this comment and the fact that he appeared angry, I proceeded to call other properties as he had suggested. When I did this, the innkeeper became very agitated and started yelling, "Get out! Get out now"! While my friend and I were stunned, we quickly left the premises since the innkeeper was, not only yelling, but also he was waving his arms angrily. Luckily, another property had availability and the rooms were exquisite and the service impeccable. My friend and I have never experienced the type of treatment we received at L'Auberge. The experience was traumatic and the behavior displayed by the innkeeper was offensive, unprofessional, and inappropriate. We thus felt compelled to write this review.

This was a celebration of our 'silver' anniversary. Originally we had plans to go away but due to family reasons had to cancel our trip. Since it was our 25th anniversary I wanted to due something romantic and wanted my spouse and I to feel special even if for just one day. I ordered a romance package so we could check in have a snack and explore the town before dinner. Well that was the first issue, they had a card in our room addressed to the wrong people. We went down stairs to review the paperwork to make sure we had gone in the right room. So yes we were in the right room. Since there was no one at the Villa to talk to we decided to bring the card to the main house. So did this make us feel special... nope, more like just another couple. Well the person in the office apologized for the error of the wrong name on the card, but that was the extent of it. Sort of like 'so sad to bad'. Well I wanted us to feel 'special' for making it to such a big milestone in our relationship, because I think it is a big deal, however I felt like it wasn't. We had a good time with each other of course but we could have been just as satisfied going to a Holiday Inn Express, which would have been a significant amount of savings. Lesson learned!

I wanted to love L'Auberge but it just didn't meet the expectations I had for a $400/night room. Our room was very nice, but the lack of a real shower was very inconvenient. Breakfast was good but not great. Dinner was very good and the service overall, especially Joshua, was great. A few suggestions - make the outside seating area more inviting - all the seating is old, dirty and hard as a rock (literally). The welcome area/office is like walking into a trailer - starting off with a lack of presentation for the type of place you want to be for the cost. Overall, it was nice but does not meet the same standards of other inns across virginia for similar or lower prices.

L'Auberge is a Bed and Breakfast for those who dislike Bed and Breakfasts. We had the 2-day special with one sit-down dinner and one in-room "repast." The only meals in my memory that compare were eaten in a Michelin star restaurant in the French town of Ivoire, and the Brasserie -- a very good one -- at the Trois Rois in Basel, Switzerland. The portions were generous, but not too much so that even modestly sized appetites can (almost) finish a 2-appetizer, 1-main dish dinner. The wine -- more than I've ever knowingly spent on a bottle -- was worth every penny. The repast, with its own bottle of wine (still unopened, since we finished off the dinner bottle the second night) was also a treat. The breakfast, included, was delicious as well, with both Continental and made-to-order dishes available. Alas, we were unable to take complete advantage of the breakfast offerings, so satiated were we by the dinners. We took a suite, large and comfortable. The bathroom had no tub, but had a wonderful steam shower. Plenty of room to spread out. The service was very good, and included help with the luggage and navigating the area. The grounds are beautiful. What keeps L'Auberge from 5 stars across the board? 1. The bread, coffee, and teas, while not bad, do not rise to the quality as the rest of the food offerings. 2. The air conditioning unit is a loud, motel-like unit. Perhaps this accounts for the high level of moisture in the room's air. 3. The suite has a step down between the bedroom and the lounging/bathroom area, which took me by surprise, having forgotten it, in the wee hours. (I'm not sure I'd let my parents, who are 80) stay in it.) Finally, my wife claims that the bathroom was not cleaned during our stay. It was very clean when we arrived, however. But these few shortcomings did little to dampen our enthusiasm for L'Auberge. Our life is richer for having visited, and our life continues to be enriched just knowing it is there.

Room: Our room was great. The air conditioner was very loud and kicked on and off multiple times which was a little annoying, but we were happy it worked with the hot weather. The steam shower was fantastic. We had a strange sewer smell in our room that we noticed when we walked in, but it went away fast. Grounds: It was a nice B&B. We walked around a bit, but it was noisy during the day right on the road. We tried to hang out on the lounge chairs, but there was bird poop and spider webs on them so we didn't last. The front porch as cute, but had uncomfortable seating. Food: Loved the treats during the day and the lemonaid. Breakfast was good. Dinner...our first night we did a wine pairing with the tasting menu and left hungry. It was very expensive to not be filled up. The second night we ordered 5 courses off the menu and had a few glasses of wine. It was great and we were stuffed. Only disappointment is it was half the cost as the night before so we felt ripped off the first night. Not real sure what that is all about at this B&B. The desserts left little to be desired for a French restaurant. Was disappointed both nights. All in all we would go back possibly for the location, but would probably try another one out first because the price was high for the whole experience. Service at dinner was always outstanding!!!

Very nice inn, but I could have spent a night at a high end hotel in NYC with the money we spent on our room and the dinner we were required to eat at the restaurant. Although very good, portions were small, they charged me $15 for a Bees Knees gin cocktail the owner wasn't even sure how to make, and the $17 for two cups of french press coffee. I do not think it is fair to charge that much for after dinner coffee just because you have no competing restaurants nearby.

We needed a quick break from a hectic life and stayed at L'Auberge Provencale for just a night, -we would have stayed longer but the inn was fully booked for the following night. We chose a room in the villa, it's a few miles from the inn so has the disadvantage of having to drive back to the room after dinner, but the huge advantage of being incredibly quiet, with a lovely shaded pool terrace on which to while away a relaxing afternoon. Our bedroom was charmingly old fashioned. The major event is dinner; the inn has an interesting and not overpriced wine list and the food is modern whilst still retaining a real farm-to-table sense of seasons. Dinner was totally delicious and highly recommended. All in all a terrific stay, the only negative in the entire trip was that the following day we left something behind by mistake. We called and the staff said it would be mailed to us at our cost but a week later it had still not been sent out.

We chose to stay here to celebrate our first anniversary and stayed in Room 9. It was spacious, clean and nicely furnished. We were shown to our room by Joshua who was very friendly and check-in/out was seamless. We ate at the on-site restaurant and the service staff were very friendly. While we very much enjoyed our dinner - our meals were delicious and well-prepared - it seemed a little hectic for the small number of parties dining. We noted when making the reservation for the stay and dinner that it was to celebrate our first anniversary and it might have been nice to have been wished Happy Anniversary by someone. We weren't expecting anything other than the verbal wish. We would definitely return for the accommodations and restaurant.

I would strongly recommend L'Auberge Provencale. My wife and I have had the pleasure of staying at L'Auberge several times -- it is our "go to" location for an evening get-away. The rooms are spacious, beautifully appointed in a French country style, and the other facilities are inviting. Dining is the tops -- the on-site restaurant is small, but the internationally trained and acclaimed chefs consistently deliver creative, utterly delicious offerings. Paired with one of the restaurant's wines (ask for a suggestion from the sommelier), you will have a dinner to remember. L'Auberge is not cheap. An overnight and full meal for two will run you around $600. But it will be the experience -- not the price -- that you remember the most.

A wonderfully charming interlude from Interstate highway travel. The Inn's setting is ideal to enjoy the beauty of spring in full bloom. The room we stayed in was a perfect complement to the surroundings, and the food was peerless.

I visited L'Auberge with a group of Garden Club friends. We had so much fun. The owners and all of the staff were friendly, informative, and endlessly helpful. The food/meals were SUPERB!!!! The service was impeccable. It really was like staying at the home of special friends. We all loved it. The bed linens and bathrooms were adequate, but could stand an update.

My wife and I came here for our anniversary. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all and relax. The service and attention to detail was top notch. They are very thoughtful and sweet people. We felt the food was good but overpriced & not filling.

Took my wife on a birthday getaway. It was great from the moment we arrived. Great room, great weather, Sat out on the porch with a cocktail before an unbelievable dinner.

The breakfast was quite possibly the most delicious I've ever had. The bed was also the most comfortable I've ever slept on! We got an add-on of chocolate strawberries, and there are other available options to make it a more romantic stay. Definitely wish we had stayed longer.

We googled B&B's in VA and were very happy we came across L'Auberge Provencale, it was awesome and we really enjoyed the innkeepers suggestions and friendliness

This is a beautiful B&B! The service is exceptional. On arrival, the staff member greeted us to take our bags to our room, and we asked about a good Mexican restaurant to eat at - by the time we came back to our room (less than 5 min), he had brought us the name and info of a Mexican restaurant in Winchester (El Centro) in the main part of Winchester. The room was nice, a king bed, a tub (and they give you bath salts if you like to soak in a bath!), and comfy chairs. The grounds of the b&b are nice... it was great to walk around and be outside. Also, in the afternoons, they had lemonade and cookies, so it was great to grab that, enjoy, and sit outside and enjoy the view! This was my first b&b and I loved it! The breakfast options were plenty, and if you want a good and precise French meal, have a dinner ther!

Stayed for one night on our way north from Florida. Accommodations were excellent. Dinner and breakfast were gracious and typically French. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
4.8 on April 21, 2015
Might have been one of the most interesting meals and best I've ever had. Also the most expensive. I'm not crying about it; it was worth it. Couple next to us had their 5 course tasting menu with a different wine with every course. I was jealous.

This is one of our favorite places in Virginia. Beautiful setting, great wineries nearby, and convenient to DC. Even if we had to drive farther to visit the other wineries a bit farther away, we would still use L'auberge as our home away from home.

Unfortunately due to a flight change, we determined that we would be arriving too late at L'Auberge Provençale for our dinner reservations. I cancelled the reservation in advance but to our surprise and great pleasure, the staff were more than willing to honor our request even though we were 1hr late for the last booking. The service throughout our stay was fantastic and I can say some larger chains could definitely learn from L'Auberge on how to treat its customers. We had booked a villa room which was a mile away from the main residence but as we had been travelling all day, the B&B were kind enough to allow us to stay in one of the main house rooms which was beautiful, with a fireplace and a huge king bed. The food in the restaurant was very good and what you would expect from an a la carte menu (small but filling) though a little pricey All in all our stay at the L'Auberge was a wonderful experience and we would definitely do it again.

Service was very good and everyone was friendly and polite. Restaurant environment was average, the food was excellent, but expensive. The surrounding community was beautiful and allowed for many things to do.

We were put in the wrong room initially, then asked to move, despite there being only 3 occupied guest rooms for the night. We were not offered the promised refreshments on arrival...we had to request them. When we asked to move our dinner time from 6:30 to 7:30, we were given a grumpy face. We were able to dine at 7:30 and were the only ones dining.

My wife and I added the 4 hour wine tour. Christian was our tour guide. He was very knowledgable about the local wineries and all the wines. He really taught us a lot about the different types of wines and how they are made. He made the trip enjoyable. When we got back to the bed and breakfast, he tools us to our room and showed us where everything was and how it worked. We ordered soup, cheese, dessert and wine for the room. The soup was fantastic and the wine they brought up was the perfect wine for the food we ate. Great getaway with my wife. Highly recommend.

We chose a 3-night stay at L'Auberge and it was a wonderful experience. Our suite was decorated beautifully, and the service was fantastic. Breakfast each morning was outstanding. We chose to dine in the on-site Restaurant one night of our stay, and the food - preparation and presentation were delightful. Upon returning to our room, there was a late-night snack of Hot Chocolate and house-made smores waiting for us in our living room. Our final evening, we chose to have their in-room repasse add-on for our dinner, and it was a perfect way to end our stay at the L-Auberge. I would highly recommend a stay. We also found the owners and staff very friendly and helpful,

Four couples who have been cooking, eating and drinking together for over a decade took it on the road. We were lucky to be able to reserve a cold Saturday night in February to stay and dine. The 8 course tasting menu with wine pairings was a wonderful experience - the culinary and serving staff made our evening incredible and having a dining room to ourselves meant we didn't disturb anyone as we got progressively more raucous.
4.8 on March 10, 2015
We visited L'Auberge for 3 nights and selected the babymoon package. We were very pleased with the level of service and attentiveness of the staff. Due to an impending snow storm, the staff moved us over to the main property, upgrading our room at no additional charge, so we would not have to risk driving over for dinner that evening. Our evening dining experience was top notch (fit for foodies) and the breakfast offerings provided ample options. During the afternoon, the staff encouraged us to come to the main house and enjoy hot chocolate, and snacks while sitting fireside. Bottom Line; If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle of every day life, this is it. This was a weekend well worth the cost.
4.8 on March 06, 2015
The service was extraordinary. Joshua and Miles especially were very attentive. Christian definitely knows wine and can recommend one to,pair with your dinner. The food was incredible, what a great chef Ryan is, young and inventive. The rooms are beautiful and spacious. I would definitely recommend a stay.

This past weekend at L'Auberge Provençal was wonderful. First, it's location next to Shenandoah National Park allowed us to take a beautiful drive along Skyline Drive and to hike a couple of the trails. Second, the rooms and public spaces at the inn were welcoming, well designed and furnished, and the service was outstanding. Third, the dinner we had on Friday night was the most amazing combination of tastes, textures, colors, and aromas that I and my companion have ever experienced. I have traveled around the world and have never tasted any like this. My friend is from France and has worked in the restaurant industry most of her life, and she too was knocked out by the food and wine. It was extraordinary! Will I return again? Bien sûr!

Absolutely enjoyed my stay and am looking forward to going back. The room with the fireplace was great on a cold night, and enjoyed the food and the dinner was fantastic. The location was a wonderful surprise because it made you feel you were really away from home. I really loved the rural setting. The staff was polite, kind, efficient and helpful. Again, am looking forward to returning.

Rooms were amazing, we loved the steam shower, which we found very easy to use. Note that I gave service 3 (met expectations) instead of four or five because the service was great, Joshua in particular did a wonderful job, but sometimes it was difficult to find someone who was working since they seemed to be a bit understaffed. Loved both breakfast and dinner. We would go back, next time in summer to enjoy the pool.

This was the perfect surprise for my husband! Romantic, cozy, great service, and amazing food!! We stayed in Room #6 and it was so convenient to be able to just head up stairs when we were finished with dinner. Breathtaking views from every window from our room of the mountains and valley. The fireplace was a great addition as well. Our complimentary gourmet breakfast was exceptional. We also loved being within 15-20 minutes of Skyline Drive, antique shops, and also discovered the quaint, historic town of Winchester. So much to do, even though our stay was during the freezing cold temperatures of January. We can't wait to go back again once the weather warms up to enjoy the gardens and so much more that Shenandoah has to offer!

This was my second time at L'Auberge, and they keep giving me reasons to return. The food in and of itself is worth the stay, though there are a slew of other reasons as to why we love this place so much. The ambiance, the service, and the quality are unparalleled, and we look forward to returning soon!

Room comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. Very nice to be able to use the fireplace. Log burning most of the night pushed our stay from a 9 to an 11! Very relaxing and comfortable. Oh, and the train with whistle in the distance was a sentimental plus!

The room was absolutely gorgeous and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The only thing I didn't like was that you are required to eat a dinner at their restaurant at your own expense and they don't tell you up front that it's very expensive. Other than that could not have asked for a better experience.
3.8 on October 28, 2014
The inn is lovely, the rooms gorgeous. The dinner was spectacular. Service is topnotch. The breakfast, however, was not nearly as wonderful as it was during our past stays. Nice, but nothing unique, as it once was.

The perfect B&B for a visit to VA Wine Country. Perhaps the finest French cuisine we have had in the US. We felt no need to dine anywhere else. The owners are old hands and run a tight ship. Service is attentive and pleasant. The only downsides. Weak WiFi and the picnic lunch was a bit disappointing. Enthusiastically recommended.

L'Auberge Provencale continues to amaze, with it's personal service, cozy rooms and, it's highlight, perfectly prepared and presented French cuisine.

This has been our overnight stay from Atlanta to the Poconos and back for the past 3 years. Very enjoyable and always welcome. My husband and I stayed here for our one year wedding anniversary and absolutely loved it here. The rooms were spacious and clean. We loved the friendly staff; they were very informative about the town. Our meals were amazing and our dinner had some fun surprises. The only disappointment we had was the fact that the fireplace in our room was not working (because the flews were not open or cleaned out) during our stay. It was a nice fall weekend and it would have been nice to have used the fireplace. Overall, our stay was enjoyable!
3.6 on September 18, 2014
The restaurant was excellent. The food was amazing and the service was the best. The room was OK, but really needed some TLC. The carpet was worn. The paint on the railings on the deck was peeling. The flowers in the pots on the deck were finished and needed refreshed. The steam shower was very nice. Overall a very nice inn.

From the moment of our arrival on Friday afternoon until our departure, the staff greeted us with absolute grace and warmth. Even when we were late to our dinner reservation, there was never an issue and the dining experience was simply unforgettable. We stayed in Room #4 which was just perfect for our weekend.

The setting was French countryside before we reached our destination. When we arrived, everything carried us further into the rolling hills and verdant fields of Provence. The staff was, from reception/check-in to our well-informed and personable waiter/sommelier at dinner to check-out, efficient, warm, and helpful. The food was a rare delight with great care taken in presentation and everything farm-to-table. Our room, #1, was well-appointed, decorated and furnished beautifully a la Provence. My husband and I have traveled far and wide and experienced 5-star establishments. This one ranks among the best. We will return!

We've been coming to L'Auberge Provencale for over a decade to celebrate special birthdays and anniversaries. This place feels like we're in Provence with their thoughtful decor and food fit for foodies. We especially enjoy coming with our friends and renting out the whole villa in the summer with its lovely pool and overflowing flowers and greeting the morning with a sumptuous gourmet breakfast by the pool. The innkeepers, Alain and Celeste are wonderful...very attentive and friendly!

Outstanding personal service that is attentive to needs and details. Food at Inn was outstanding, modern French cuisine. Wine selection was broad and the sommelier was very helpful. Breakfast at the Villa (outside by the pool on a very nice patio surrounded by flower garden) prepared and served by the owner, and provided a great opportunity to learn more about the Inn.

Our room was clean, but the sheets were cheap polyester and not pressed. The pillows were foam. I can't understand why in this country most hotels and B&B's don't use quality bed linens. All throughout Europe the bed linens are quality and pressed. The meal and service were outstanding. Breakfast was also delicious.

My wife and I stayed just one night at L’Auberge Provencale. We came for the terrific restaurant and to stay a night before heading on to visit family in Washington DC. The meal was excellent. The servers were really knowledgeable and friendly. The food was consistently excellent. I feel it was a good value for a meal of this quality. We stayed in Room 6. This is an upstairs room in the main lodge, right above the welcome reception room on the main first floor. This is one of the less expensive rooms on the property. Since we were there mostly to just sleep after a nice dinner before moving on, I felt it was unnecessary to pay up for one of the suites elsewhere on the property. The building is very old. The wood floors creak like 150 or 200 year old wood floors do. I never mind that. It fits the character of the property. The room was spotlessly clean. The king bed was comfortable and the room was nicely cooled by the window A/C unit. The road noise was not a problem.

We enjoyed our meal. Our overnight stay was slightly disappointing. Our room was missing soap, shampoo, etc. when we arrived - it was also noisy both with downstairs chatter and the road out front. We expected a little more hospitality considering the price, etc.
5 on June 17, 2014
We've come here since their opening, and continue to enjoy the cooking, service, ambience, and amenities. The staff did their level best to make our 50th wedding anniversary weekend (its Friday night) in this neck of the woods a memorable and happy occasion -- specially crafted dessert plates, personal attention, original and very inventive & complex cuisine that sets a standard, and willing stand-in photographers from the staff, all in the midst of their preparations for a Saturday wedding. We couldn't always tell who was in charge, but nonetheless everything worked, and nobody was less than wholly cheerful throughout our visit. And the place itself remains simply beautiful, a work of art from the gardens to the washrooms. It's well worth making this a destination, and not merely a detour, as the Guide Michelin might say. (The bookstore on the main street in nearby Berryville, along with The Red Schoolhouse antiques and Iron Penny Lamp Shop in neighboring Greenwood, might also be a motive.)
5 on June 04, 2014
This B&B is Fabulous. Celeste (owner) is so amazing and kind. We missed breakfast because my husband and I somehow managed to mess up the time. We were so disappointed because their breakfast is fresh, healthy and yummy. Upon check-out we told her what happened and she refused to let us check out until she gave us breakfast. She packed us a bag (huge) full of croissants, fruit, yogurt, orange juice etc...Honestly I was so moved almost to tear because she really didn't have to do it. It is hard to find good customer service and meet someone who is so incredibly kind. I should mention I was 7 months pregnant. Overall, we loved our stay there. Room was clean, very accommodating staff, food was fresh and beyond delicious. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the DMV, this is a wonderful place to visit.

My boyfriend and I very much enjoyed our recent stay at l'Auberge Provencale. The room was absolutely lovely, the fireplace was delightful, and the breakfast was good. The shining star of our stay was the evening dinner service. We were served more than a meal-- the chef created a very memorable experience. All of the courses, including the amuses-bouches (yes there were two), and all of the other delicious surprises along the way, were spectacular. It was evident that the chef paid great attention to every detail, and the food was not only delicious with layers of nuanced flavors, but also creative and whimsical. L'Auberge exceeded my expectations, but the chef's dinner service was truly outstanding.

My wife and I stayed here the other night based on a glowing recommendation of friends. The drive away from the hustle of the NOVA burbs was beautiful. The house and views were very nice. Our room was spacious and comfy (perhaps a little interior decorating help required). We enjoyed some sweets and spiced cider in front of a fire. Dinner began well enough with wine and interesting menu selections. The first taster that came out was a little potted plant with a baby radish planted in ricotta cheese, topped with ginger crumbs. It was so cute, but none of it had any taste, including the radish. And so it went for most of the remaining courses. The presentation was terrific, but the food largely lacked flavor, either good or bad. It was just bland. The exceptions were the chicken liver and lamb that were entirely too salty. The desserts were good. Not great, but good. We waited to pass judgement until after breakfast the next morning. That was when we discovered tasteless chocolate chip pancakes (unless you count the burned flavoring) and a tasteless Spanish omelette. The best way for me to describe this is nice looking hospital food. After the terrific reviews and the recommendations we received, we were quite surprised, and not pleasantly so. The house was nice. The Staff was very friendly. The food, however, was quite poor. Sorry.

Along with another couple we stayed at the Villa for a long weekend. Our stay was just lovely. The innkeepers were very warm and welcoming but certainly allowed us to just enjoy ourselves. The perfect mix for a bed and breakfast. Alain was our breakfast host both mornings, providing the most engaging conversation. How he managed to pull off 4 perfectly cooked eggs while talking with us is a mystery. This is on our "must return" list. L'Auberge Provencale is certainly in our top Bed and Breakfast experiences.

There are not many places in the mid-Atlantic region that combine the location, quality and 'other worldly' sense the L'Auberge Provencale brings to every guest. The inn is charming and the food is fantastic. The proximity to Virginia wine country, skyline drive, the Shenandoah River and even the area's ski hills makes for an fun filled weekend any time of the year. I've been twice and plan to continue visiting for years to come. Highly recommended.

Everything was impeccable, the rooms are clean, very tastefully decorated and welcoming, giving you the feeling you are actually in France. The grounds are well taken care of, with a beautiful garden and flower beds in front of each room. They also have their own herb and vegetable garden, a large porch in front of the house, and a patio area outside the restaurant, refreshments and pastries for the guests. Dinner was amazing, both in terms of plating as well as taste. We tried the three-course menu for one person and the five-course menu for the other and split everything. It's the kind of food you have to savor slowly paying attention to every taste and texture. It may seem a bit pricey, but the executive chef does an amazing job. We heard him explain to someone that he personally picks the ingredients for each day's menu, so everything is fresh. The service was outstanding, better than at any other restaurant we had been to before. Wine is expensive. Breakfast was cooked by one of the owners, who is French, and was delicious. What impressed us the most was the attention to detail in every category. You cannot stay/dine here and not notice the effort that goes into ensuring you, as a guest, feel welcome.

What a place, what food, what service, what ambiance, what a get-a-way. It was what was portrayed yet better. My girlfriend and I stayed one night (it should have been two). We added the champagne and cheese plate to the room for our arrival It was delightful. We slept as soundly as ever and discussed having to replace our bed at home. The staff, every detail, just great and fun at the same time. We enjoyed the surrounding sights and the time with each other. Great scotch and bourbon list. The food... ESPECIALLY THE CHEF'S TASTING MENU!!!! Everyone should enjoy L'Auberge at least once if not repeatedly. The cheese-wheel was great.

Everything about this place is eyecandy! The rooms are spacious and relaxing with gorgeous furnishings and colors surrounded by lovely, healthy gardens full of flowers and vegetables and fruits. Guests are so pampered! Lemon verbena soap, bath salts, loads of towels as well as all the things everybody else has. The service is so pleasant, everyone smiles at you and is helpful. You will love the restaurant with so many familiar foods prepared in such new and exciting ways. They look so beautiful on your plate you almost hate to eat them. I do not drink wine, but my friends raved. And for heaven's sake save room for the dessert. Everything is locally grown or personally selected by the chef on site. The day I was there the son (also a chef) was flying to Cape Cod to catch some fresh fish for the restaurant. My breakfast the next morning had all kinds of fresh berries cut up with bits of fresh mint, coffee, granola, sweet breakfast bread, yogurt plus three hot items prepared freshly for me. I know I forgot some of the food on the cold offerings tables, there were so many to choose from. Four years ago I found a little Inn in Normandy that became my standard to measure all B&B's. I have a new favorite now: L'Auberge Provencal. Right here in Virginia!

We chose this getaway because it was close to home (2 hours), in the country (no wi-fi! I was soo happy!) and because the food has won so many awards. We plan to go back soon and do the 5-course tasting menu this time! Worth every penny!

My husband and I stayed at the L'Auberge villa (our first experience) to celebrate his birthday and had dinner in the B&B dining room. I can't say enough about the quality of the food and the extent of the service! Alain greeted us warmly upon arriving and we were served an amazing breakfast by Celeste in the villa the next morning. Our one-night stay made us feel relaxed and pampered.....will definitely return!

I could not find a single thing to "pick" at. We were with two other couples, and none of us had stayed there before this Valentine's Day visit. I saw our room, as well as, the other two and was as impressed as I have ever been. Tremendous attention to detail, luxurious, great design features, and good looks in each suite.

Not only is this place romantic, but it is hands down, the best food I have ever enjoyed at a B&B. Each course is a artistic masterpiece. My husband and I always feel refreshed and pampered after staying here...even if it is only for one night!

We've celebrated our anniversaries at L'Auberge Provencale for several years. The inn experience has been uniformly excellent. Dinners are creative and delicious, featuring fresh, local fare when possible, and the wine list is extensive. The breakfasts are the best we've been served anywhere in the world-- quail stuffed with their house-made sausage and wonderful egg dishes, among other delights in addition to fresh fruit, cereals, yogurt, and croissants.

My husband and I just returned from L'Auberge Provencale after spending the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. From the minute we arrived it was amazing. The setting is beautiful, from the front porch where we sat to escape the June heat under the ceiling fans to the manicured grounds. We enjoyed walking around the grounds admiring the vegetable garden, the herb gardens and the fruit trees. There are lounge chairs under the trees where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Our room was beautifully decorated as is every inch of the inn, right down to the smallest details. We enjoyed two breakfasts in the dining room (unbelievable warm scones, fresh fruit and homemade granola followed by a breakfast entree chosen by the chef) and one dinner where I ate beef that melted in my mouth, and do not skip dessert, the creamiest cheesecake on earth. Lemonade and baked goods, nuts, and dried fruit were offered in the sitting room each afternoon. The staff was very attentive, Rutledge was great! We had no knowledge of the area and he mapped out a wine tasting route for us and gave us some very good tips for things to do in the area. We also loved Vicky who was very friendly at breakfast each morning. I don't think we will ever stay at anotherr B&B and not compare it to the luxury we experienced here. I would highly recommend a stay here, its perfect for a romantic getaway, especially if you enjoy wineries and antiquing (in Strasburg).

Everything was superb! Thank you!

Our stay was delightful and we appreciate all the staff does to make their guests welcome. The rooms are lovely, and the fireplace was especially nice as temperatures had dropped. The steam shower was such a treat and also helped alleviate stuffiness from a cold. Our dinner selections were delicious and the breakfast French toast was so smooth that it was like custard, the best I've ever had. We had a wonderful time touring the historical towns and visiting the local wineries with helpful recommendations and directions by Rutledge. A return stay is definitely planned. Thank you.

The 5 course French cuisine was outstanding! My husband and I left full and completely satisfied. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to meet our every need. The room was very romantic and cozy with the fireplace on a chilly fall night. We have already recommended this inn to our friends and family, and hinted that gift certificates would be a welcome Christmas gift:) Thank you for making our anniversary so special. What a wonderful way to celebrate my 40th birthday! Impeccable service, beautiful accommodations, excellent food and presentation. I love that the menu was out of the ordinary! Beautifully executed! The inn was lovely and had a warm and inviting atmosphere, but relaxed enough that you could not worry about if you had a bit of lint on your jacket. That is what I think makes the best vacation is when you can truly relax. We had a room with a steam shower which was also wonderful (water was super hot with great pressure too! Something you don't always find in historic places.) My husband also got us massages during our stay which were terrific by a well qualified (licensed) masseuse. They also had flowers and balloons in the room too and a little birthday cake that was just the right size for two people. Delicious too! As mentioned, the menu was interesting and delivered on all the items we ordered. My menu had "Happy Birthday (w/ my name)" on it too - nice touch! So, all in all, it was wonderful experience, good value for our money, and I would definitely repeat the experience!

“Thanks for another visit (our 26th Anniversary) to add to our memories!” We stayed in Room 11, the nicest suite, but we have enjoyed all the other rooms in which we have stayed over the years. The pastoral countryside in fields not far away, and the terrific flower gardens surrounding the buildings are a nice contrast to the metro area where we live, and the food, as usual, is imaginative and delicious.

We stayed at L'Auberge Provencale to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. This was a return visit for us, each time we enjoy our stay more. Room 7 is one of our favorites in the warm season with its lovely patio outside the bedroom. The staff go out of their way to make sure you have all you need. The dining is 5 star. Truly a 5 star bed and breakfast. We are looking forward to many more stays. Bob and Kathleen Waynesboro, Pa

My daughter treated me to a lovely birthday weekend here in November. The rooms and atmosphere were very charming. The food was outstanding, especially the breakfast. Alain and Celeste were very hospitable and we had wonderful conversation with the both of them. And of course Maurice the cat and Bernadette the dog were the perfect hosts! Beautiful country setting close to vineyards, a gem called The Locke Store, and the picturesque town of Middleburg. Friday night we stayed at the main house, and Saturday the Villa. Loved them both!

First time visiting the Inn. My party had three beatifully decorated rooms w/wonderful, hand-painted tiles framing the fireplaces, etc. Excellent food (duck breast was very nice!)....extensive winelist.....friendly wait staff. Living just outside DC, the location is perfect for us. Tired of the long trek out to The Greenbrier (another fine establishment) -- so we'll definitely be returning to L'Auberge.

We have stayed at a number of Bed and Breakfast and this facility is more a restaurant with rooms. They care more about the dinner reservations than they do about the customer service the guests receive. There is no social hour with wine and cheese as most B&B's offer to get guest aquainted with one another, when we asked about other restaurants in the area we were informed that there weren't too many close by. However, Winchester is only a short 15 minute drive with fabulous restaurant. We ate at a French Restaurant with a very witty owner, host and met local people whom we had a pleasant 45 minute conversation with. They said the Italian Restaurant in town has been voted the "best in the country". (I can't varify that, however). When our room was serviced I requested in writing an extra bath towel that was never left. We asked for a map of the area and was told she would bring us one but never came back with it. Little things that aren't too much to ask for were missing. After check in we had NO contact with the staff there, other than the service people at the restaurant.

We had a fabulous time at L'Auberge Provencale. The restaurant/inn and villa were charming and romantic, and the food was completely over the top. We stayed in the villa in a gorgeous huge suite full of sunlight and a spacious sitting area. The room and bathroom were spotless, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We loved waking up to Celeste’s delicious 3-course breakfasts, which (depending on the day) included: eggs, sausage, potatoes, strawberry & peach crepes, zucchini bread, fresh fruit kabobs, homemade granola, croissants, scones, and a bunch of other fattening goodies. The fruit, pastry, and chocolate bowl in our room was always full of treats. We enjoyed chatting with Celeste about politics, world events, and how long it takes to get to the best winery in Virginia. We also enjoyed the lovely pool right outside our room at the villa. We asked for a picnic one day, and it was so bountiful that we saved it for dinner and brought it to a nearby arboretum. The basket included a lamb sandwich, a veggie sandwich, artisan cheeses, chocolate covered strawberries, potato salad, and a few other exotic creations. We drove to Winchester one evening where you can find some restaurants, live music, and a movie theater. Other things you can do in the area are canoeing/kayaking, horseback riding, wine-tasting at vineyards, and ballooning. If you plan to eat dinner at the inn, we recommend saving it for your last night. At $88 per person (not including alcohol), it's not cheap, but it was spectacular. The best thing about this wonderful B & B is that it's only about an hour from the Washington beltway, but for a few relaxing, peaceful days, you feel like you're in the south of France. Think of the airfare you'll save.

My husband and I stayed at the villa location of the L'Auberge yet had his birthday dinner at the L'Auberge dining room. Everything about our stay was absolutely fabulous! Celeste & Alain Borel are wonderful hosts and the breakfasts and dinners were awesome. I've never had food that wonderful. They all went out of there way to make my husband's 46th birthday something to really remember, from a personalized dinner menu to the birthday package with Happy Birthday written in chocolate on the plates for dessert... everything was completely something to remember. We didn't have one bad second staying at the Villa and the Borel's are tremendous. We will most definately stay there again and again. I'm telling all of my friends and family about the L'Auberge Provencale!

Being from D.C., my boyfriend and I were looking for a quiet place to getaway. After stumbling across L’Auberge Provencale’s website we decided to give it a try. The service was amazing. We came in several hours before check-in time and we were greeted at the door by Catlin, who personally ran around getting our room ready and made sure we felt at home. We stayed in room #9, which really made us feel like we were back in France, and had great views of the countryside and mountains. Catlin then sent us out for a day of exploring with maps in hand. After visiting the areas museums and several vineyards, we returned for dinner, and we were treated to one of the most amazing meals of our lives. The food was not only cooked to perfection, but the flavors were never over powering and the presentation artful. Joseph, over server, made wonderful wine suggestions, and doted on us without being intrusive. We had a wonderful night of rest and relaxation. When we came down for breakfast, we were again surprised. We had granola and fresh fruit with omelets and duck for breakfast. Catlin again stopped by to check on us, as did Alain, the chef/owner, who told amazing stories of his adventures. Having travelled extensively across the country and abroad, we appreciated the ambience of Provence and the true hospitality of the staff. The only drawback was that we had to leave, but we will return!

We chose L'Auberge for our 5th anniversary, and I think it may be where we go for every anniversary hereafter! When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by Shauna, the assistant innkeeper and Maurice the house cat. Shauna took us us to the main house and immediately offered us Cherry Lemonade and homemade cookies before taking us to our room. We stayed in Room 6, and the pictures on the website do not do it justice! There was an incredibly comfortable king sized bed, and a beautiful bath room with a huge soaking tub (they even provided an herbal bath blend already in the bath room for you!). There were beautiful views of the pasture out back and the mountains in the front, loads of natural light flowing into the room, and a bowl of fruit, chocolates and cookies waiting for us. After getting settled in, we came down and were greeted by Shauna and Celeste (the owner) who chose an incredible before dinner wine for us. Soon after we sat down to dinner, which was by far the best experience I have ever had in a restaurant anywhere! From the amazing service to the food that is beyond compare (I can not rave enough about the pheasant), they continually added incredible special touches that only L'Auberge does to make you feel as if you are the most important clients in the inn (including a personalized menu commemorating our anniversary)! The next morning (after one of the most restful nights of sleep I have had in my adult life), we came down to an exquisite breakfast that started with fresh fruit, breakfast breads, and granola, and juice, and ended with a appetizer of melon soup with raspberry sorbet, and a hot breakfast entree. We also ordered a picnic for our day exploring which was nearly 15 pounds of amazing food and goodies! L'Auberge is a special place with incredible people and cuisine that is not soon forgotten, and, while pricey, is worth every penny!

My husband and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary in June at the Villa with a cocktail party and a renewal ceremony at the Villa and a magnificent dinner for our 30 guests at the Inn. Many of our friends, including ourselves, are well-traveled and foodies so we have lots of data against which to compare the Inn. To a person, we could not have been more impressed with inventive, artfully presented and delicious food, the attentive, personalized service and the marvelous ambience of both the Inn and the Villa. We stayed a the Villa for two nights, booking the entire property and the rest of our guests stayed at the Inn. Everyone had a wonderful experience. Breakfast the next day was terrific and extended the magical event for us well into that following day. Celest Borel was terrific to work with and helped us to plan and execute (even when it poured rain during the ceremony!) a tasteful - in every sense of the word - elegant and truly memorable event. Our guests are still talking about it, as are we. Go for dinner, or for an overnight stay, but by all means - go!!

We stayed at L'Auberge to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and it was nothing short of a decadent weekend. The room we stayed in was beautiful, clean, comfortable, and every attention to detail was superb, right down to the fruit bowl that was refreshed daily. While we visited the area we also went on a sunrise hot air balloon ride, did some horseback riding, and some sightseeing. We were very impressed by the breakfast picnic basket that was made for us because we weren't going to be present during breakfast hours one morning. We have been telling our friends it's a perfect respite from the real world! L'Auberge really is "an inn where great expectations are quietly met."
