About

This magnificent, award winning Queen Anne is situated directly across the street from the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson and was first occupied by R. H. Catlett and his family in 1896. Mr. Catlett worked at Virginia Military Institute for a number of years prior to the Civil War and was a close personal friend of Stonewall Jackson (a teacher at VMI). The Catlett family occupied the house for almost 77 years. Bonnie and Jeff moved in during November, 2013 and started renovations almost immediately. Their storied journey started in New Zealand and was highlighted in articles published by “The News Leader” newspaper twice, “Shenandoah Valley Living” Magazine, and heard on National Public Radio. Because the proprietors painstakingly restored this grand old lady and turned her into on of Staunton’s best bed and breakfasts many historical details remain within its 8,000 square feet. The Berkeley House Bed & Breakfast is beautifully decorated for the period, but modern conveniences are available for your comfort. Reserve your room today.

Our room was great, clean and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were very good as well as the company of the other guests. We found the environment very peaceful and relaxing. We would stay there again

5 on August 26, 2018

We have stayed in uncountable number of B&Bs and Berkeley House is right up there with the best. The location is just across the street from the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. It is within walking distance of some wonderful restaurants. The next time we stay there we will get tickets to one of the Shakespeare plays. Gracious hosts. What more could one ask for.

Innkeeper Response
We are humbled by your putting our B&B "up there with the best;" especially when you have stayed at so many B&B's. Thank you!! Yes, you definitely want to see a Shakespeare play at the famous Blackfriars Playhouse (a short walk from Berkeley House Bed and Breakfast). Our guests enjoy a discount there and can book packages when making reservations with us. We look forward to your next visit!

We loved our stay at Berkeley House Bed and Breakfast. Jeff and his wife were very warm and very helpful. Very special weekend

5 on June 04, 2018

We had a wonderful weekend at Berkeley House B&B. It is located close to everything in downtown Staunton and we walked everywhere. Jeff and Bonnie were wonderful hosts and our breakfasts were creative and delicious. The house is beautiful - so many details to enjoy. And the front porch is expansive and we sat outside and read during a rain shower. So relaxing!

Innkeeper Response
We've had a lot of rain this year and it certainly is relaxing on the wraparound porch during a storm. We're glad you were able to take advantage of it and many more offerings from Staunton. Thank you for your thoughtful review. We look forward to seeing you at Berkeley House Bed and Breakfast again soon!

The charm of the past with the comforts of the present. Jeff and Bonnie are warm and gracious hosts. The first morning i was a guest the breakfast was fresh fruit and berries, with a ham and cheese souffle, need i say more. The room was spacious, and invited quiet relaxation. Rooms & Rates

Chatswood Chamber

Chatswood is a cozy suburb on Auckland’s North Shore where we lived for quite some time. We still have many friends in Chatswood. This room has a bright and airy appeal and was perfect for our collection of rattan furniture. The en suite has a claw foot tub as well as a shower. If you are looking for a bed and breakfast in Staunton, VA — a stay in the Chatswood Chamber would be an excellent choice.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen

Devonport Chamber

The Devonport Chamber was inspired by a stay at a beautiful B&B several years ago in Devonport, New Zealand (part of Auckland’s North Shore). Actually, the seed for launching our Staunton bed and breakfast was planted there. We stayed in their largest and best room and the colors were very similar to what you see in these pictures. The room has an en suite bathroom and is the only guest room on the first floor of Berkeley House. There is also private access to the front wraparound porch. This room faces West and overlooks Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace and Mary Baldwin College.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen

Birkenhead Chamber

The Birkenhead Chamber is an East facing room that we named after the last town we lived in before moving here from New Zealand. Birkenhead is on the North Shore of Auckland and when Jeff drove to work in the mornings he usually drove East towards the rising sun. The Birkenhead Chamber gets plenty of morning sun and is one of two guest rooms with access to the second floor deck. Join us in our beautiful Staunton, VA bed and breakfast.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen

Catlett Chamber

The Catlett Chamber is named for the family responsible for building our house. The Catlett’s were the home’s occupants from 1896 to 1972. This guest room faces West and has excellent views of downtown Staunton, Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace and Mary Baldwin College. Visit our historic bed and breakfast and enjoy all that Staunton has to offer.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen

Woodrow Wilson Chamber

The Woodrow Wilson Chamber or Suite is named after the 28th president of the United States. Woodrow Wilson was a son of Staunton and his birthplace, Presidential library and museum are directly across the street from our Staunton VA bed and breakfast (you can see his birthplace and much more from the chamber). Hence, the name for the chamber. The Woodrow Wilson Chamber has the option of being a large chamber or a two room suite with a large bathroom between the rooms (Booking a 3rd guest automatically opens the suite. Call [540] 480-6706 if you need to add a 4th person or if you want the suite and there are less than 3 guests. Extra charges will apply). There is also access to the 2nd floor deck from the bathroom. The main room has a king size bed and the 2nd room has a full size bed and can sleep up to 2 more people. The 2nd room is part of the house’s turret and is therefore round with the antique curved glass windows.

Signature Dish

Dutch Baby Pancake
A Dutch Baby Pancake is a cross between a soufflé and an omelet - it is a light, airy pancake with sides. They also get puffed (this egg mixture billows up to unbelievable heights) and crispy around the edges while retaining a pancake-like tenderness in the middle. The sides of the pancake rise high above edges of the pan, creating a light, puffy crust with a tender, custard-like middle. I sometimes stuff the pancake with a tasty fruit filling.
