The home is lovely as was our room. It was convenient to walk to the main street of town as well as traveling to other local attractions. Susan and Mike were very friendly and gave very helpful suggestions of things to do and places to eat. We had such a nice time and the information they shared about activities in the area during other seasons of the year have us hoping to revisit the area.

Great Place to Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Mike and Sue at the Collins House. They provided us with great ideas on where to eat dinner (Harvest Table) and what to see on the afternoon (Dreamland Alpaca Farm) of our arrival. Breakfast was wonderful.

Delightful stay at the Collins House Inn

5 on September 06, 2017

We were delighted to walk into the beautiful Collins House Inn while traveling home on 81 through Virginia. This beautiful gem in Marion, VA is worth the stay. Mike and Susan, the innkeepers, welcomed us and were so helpful in steering us to a good place to eat. We arrived late and were able to walk up the street to a get a bite to eat at 27 Lions. Susan made us a delicious blueberry pancake breakfast and Mike filled us in on the area and the history of the house. They made us feel like friends.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you for your generous review. We are very glad that your stay with us fulfilled your expectations. We hope that if you are in the area again, you will once again consider at stay with us

Beautiful home, pleasant stay.

Traveling thru on I-81, chose Collins House to stay for 1 night. Marion is a quaint, very nice town, with obvious care taken by the residents to make it a welcoming place to visit. Collins house is a beautifully restored older home very close to "downtown", a grand old home with lots of character. Our room was beautiful, with all details taken care of to a high level. Owners were most gracious, breakfast was perfect - not the typical country greasy bacon, eggs and grits but a light waffle with fresh fruit, Only gripe (minor) is that the A/C system was set a bit on the warm side for the summer heat (90+) and sun load, and it took until about 3AM for the room to cool to a comfortable sleeping temperature. We will visit again and highly recommend this inn to anyone looking for a nice getaway.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review. We look forward to your next visit to our area. We have finally found a company in the area who knows the ins and outs of a water chiller cooling system, so we have resolved that problem area and the house is now efficiently cooled.

The 'George'

George A. Collins purchased the property in 1919 from Ella's children and built the original house. George was a local merchant who, along with his brother Lewis Preston Collins, SR., opened the Collins Brothers Department store in 1898 in downtown Marion. He never married. Soothing, yet elegant, this spacious guest room offers a fully vented gas fireplace.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2

The 'L.P.'

George also helped to raise his nephew, Lewis Preston Collins II, (L.P.) who went on to become Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. Soothing greens, with subtle floral patterns, exude an earthy calmness in this spacious guest room.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2

The 'Ella'

Ella Bolling Collins, sister-in-law to George Collins, originally owned the property on which The Collins House was eventually built. Decorated in deep jewel tones, with floral accents, this spacious room is located on the first floor.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2

The 'Mary'

Mary Shields Collins (Mollie) was the sister of George Collins whole lived in the house with George. She never married. When she died, the house became part of a local hospital. Rich butterscotch and deep smoky blue tones create a soothing atmosphere for this large guest room.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2

The 'Nettie'

Nettie Shaver was one of George's milliners. We don't know the exact relationship, but we know she was a very close family friend. She was with George, who was on a buying trip in New York City, when he died. After Georges death, she returned to the Collins house and resided with Mary. Warm earth tones of brick, taupe, and olive yield a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in this guest room.

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
