Historic 1859 Woldert-Spence Manor

611 West Woldert Street Corner of Woldert & Vine Streets, Tyler, TX 75702 USA (Show map)

About

We are Tyler's oldest B&B, and the closest lodging facility to historic downtown Tyler. An 1859 Tyler Historic Landmark, the Manor is a restored Queen Anne Victorian home. The house is set back on a large corner lot surrounded by brick streets and many mature shade trees. There is a Koi pond in the relaxing Rear Garden along with a gazebo, wishing well, and large back deck. The main house has original oak and heart-of-pine wood floors, wood moulding, and gorgeous stained-glass windows. All 7 rooms have private baths, some featuring claw-foot tubs. Additional features in some rooms include king or queen-size beds, fireplaces, private balconies or porches. One of the rooms is a private carriage house for that home-away-from-home feeling. A delicious breakfast is served daily on china, crystal and silver in the formal dining room. The Woldert-Spence Manor is perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays, or any special occasion! Also ask about our whole house rate for family reunions, retreats or group getaways. We are just minutes from many attractions including Tyler's Rose Garden, fine dining, antique stores, Tyler State Park, and more. There is something for everyone to enjoy while in Tyler! Good location just 2 hours from Dallas. Friendly host, interesting home. Great steak restaurant downtown!

Very nice historic home with gracious hosts

This is "our place" for stays in Tyler, TX. Love the character of the historic home and Mike and Barbara serve as great hosts with delicious breakfasts and helpful connections to the Tyler community.

Not quite unsatisfactory, but not wonderful

2.0 on October 25, 2017

Charming house, generally gracious hosts. There were problems. We stayed in a cottage behind the main house. A pervasive musty odor filled our space. I knew this would be trouble for my allergy if we stayed more than 2 days. We were booked for only two days, so I decided to risk it. The inflammation in my airways and sinuses started to kick in on the second night. I anticipated that trying to move to another facility without paying these people for our stay was going to create a major hassle. Their preoccupation with cost compensation, while understandable, seemed a bit more "front-and-center" than what I'd describe as typical. I explained that I drive a plug-in hybrid and asked about an outlet to recharge our car's hybrid battery overnight. They said they had no external outlets. Prepared for that possibility, I told them we brought an extension cord and could run it up to the apartment through the balcony door. The hostess explained that the balcony door shuts tightly and this would require leaving the door open, which meant running the air conditioner overnight with an open door. She said this would cost her $400. (This impressed me as implausible. She said if I wanted to do this, she would come over and turn off the AC at the thermostat. The thermostat is kept in a lock box, so guests have no independent control over the room temperature, and the hosts do not live on site. Anyone planning to book a stay at this facility should be aware of this circumstance. The food was average. Guests were served baked egg casseroles on both days. Orange juice and luke-warm coffee also was served. The atmosphere was warm and hospitable and the guests all were pleasant. I was not aware of any musty air in the dining and sitting areas of the main house. The facility is promising, but we probably will not stay there again.

Innkeeper Response
Goodness, Mark, many of your issues could easily be resolved if brought to our attention; however, unless a guest can articulate their needs, there is slight chance of that. To clarify, we DO live on site...right next to the cottage you occupied, so emergencies are handled in a timely manner. We also provide a space on your reservation to articulate any non-emergency special needs, such as outdoor electrical, allergies, etc. to provide for conversation relevant to those needs. In addition, we invite guests to call us ahead with any questions or concerns so we can resolve those in advance. No such opportunity was presented to us. Upon your late-evening arrival, the fact that we were "up front" with our last-minute responses to protecting our business and property is a positive attribute, as it helps provide an understanding between the parties involved. While we cannot anticipate the sensitivity of a particular guest's biological balance, there has been no previous mention of "musty odors" in that space, nor was it mentioned on your reservation. If guests have such a high sensitivity, it would be incumbent on them to inquire with us and explore remedies of such while traveling. We do regret that you may have suffered your sinus issues. Your unit also has a fully equipped kitchen, in which we prepared your own coffee maker. That guests choose not to take advantage of this and opt to relax in the main house parlor is perfectly fine. We also have the occasional guest who prefers their coffee hotter than what it comes off the pot; and we graciously resolve that for them, so again, communication is our friend. We do wish we could please everyone all the time; but occasionally that is clearly not possible. Best of travels to you.

Welcoming and peaceful

The Woldert-Spence Manor is a historical landmark, but is as comfortable as visiting relatives or friends. I wished we could stay longer.

Two night Stay 8/2017

4.8 on August 29, 2017

My recent two-night stay was a treat! The location close to downtown was convenient. Barbara & Mike were great hosts, friendly and helpful. I especially loved my balcony off my 2nd floor room. Both days my breakfast was delicious! I will definitely return when I'm in Tyler, TX.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you for your kind review. We are always striving to be the perfect 5-star rating for our guests, so welcome any suggestions on how we can accomplish that for you. We look forward to any time in the future when we have another opportunity to host you and close that gap to a perfect rating!

Restorative Retreat

Quiet, peacefulness was just what I needed. Breakfast was good and Barbara makes a mean Chocolate cookie! :) I really enjoyed learning more about the B&B history.

Beautiful Old Home

5 on August 14, 2017

This beautiful old home sits on a shady lot a few blocks from downtown Tyler. The stain glass windows and architecture are authentic to the age of the home and the furniture choices blend in well. Our room had a small private balcony that we enjoyed. Our host and hostess were friendly and helpful and we had a delightful chat about the history of the home. Our breakfast was delicious with a variety of food.

Very Quaint

4.6 on August 12, 2017

My wife and I stayed up stairs in the one room with a balcony. This room was built in the attic ages ago and the ceilings are low. This was no issue for my wife and I who are a bit vertically challenged. On the plus side, I could adjust the ceiling fan speed from the bed without standing. The television in the room was an old 12" CRT, however Barbara said they have purchased new flat screens. Just waiting to get them installed. The food was very appealing even to a picky eater as myself and nicely presented. Mike and Barbara are fairly new to the B&B thing, but they are getting the house together quickly, learning fast and are natural hosts.

Home away from home

4.2 on June 28, 2017

Barbara and Mike are such personable hosts that we quickly felt like we were staying with friends. Our stay in the Robert Spence Jr. room (upstairs) was very comfortable and enjoyable. The balcony on the room was a really pleasant place to step out to in the morning or as the sun set. Our meals at the beautiful dining room table were delicious but not heavy and Barbara easily accommodated my gluten-free needs. Her knowledge of the original family history of the house would make you think that they were close relatives. She really communicates a joy and appreciation for that history and for many attractions in and around Tyler.

Friendly and homey

4.4 on May 01, 2017

Very pleasant stay. My only suggestion is that if you do not like hard bed pillows, be sure to bring your own.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you for your suggestion. We do sometimes field requests for a different pillow; and with almost 50 pillows on property, we can usually accommodate individual tastes. Of course, some guests do bring their personal favorite which is perfectly understandable!
