The Artful Lodger is a bright and airy Victorian built in 1850 located in the Mansion District, and centrally located within 5 minutes from downtown Newport's shopping and dining area. We guarantee you private off-street parking, private baths with all rooms and suites, and an exquisite gourmet breakfast in our conservatory overlooking the Newport Harbor. Our warmest welcome! When you stay with us, you will be neighboring "The Elms," a Newport mansion owned by the infamous robber baron, E. J. Berwind. The mansion is famous for its sunken gardens and lavish parties (even in present day). The secret coal tunnel designed by the coal magnate is steps away from our front door. It was used for discreetly transporting fuel for the first electric lights of the turn of the century elite's "summer cottages." We're relatively new to the B&B scene. I found this after searching accommodations in Newport (that were obnoxiously overpriced), and after reading the reviews, decided to book a room. What a wonderful find! The owner, Phil, was awesome, very accommodating, and obviously loves his property. The property has all of the modern conveniences, but has been kept as a home of the period. The back steps to the 2nd floor "Estella" Room, and on up to the 3rd floor kitchen and dining room are steep and narrow and would pose a challenge to someone with ambulatory issues...however, the average person should have no issues. The morning breakfasts are prepared by Phil himself (he's a chef in his own right), and are delicious and expertly prepared to order. The views from the dining room of the property's gardens, neighboring hillside rooftops, and Newport harbor are beautiful! To top it off, Phil, his school-aged daughter, and sister, are all consummate hosts/hostesses and work hard to make each person's stay perfect. The location to the mansions is within easy walking distance...we loved walking by the beautiful homes of the area in addition to touring the glamourous opulence of the preserved mansions. We Lyft-ed/Uber-ed to the shopping/restaurant areas...so, everything was perfect. If/when we ever make it back to Newport, we will definitely return to The Artful Lodger.

This was a repeat visit to the Artful Lodger Inn. It is within convenient walking distance of Salve Regina University which I was visiting and yet also a short walk from restaurants etc. in Newport. The walk along the historic Spring street to the inn from Newport takes you past in incredible range of historic buildings. It is quiet, well-run and friendly with excellent breakfasts. I'll be returning again on my next visit to Newport.

Inn located conveniently near mansions. Close to a variety of good restaurants in walking distance. Room a little small but price reasonable by Newport standards. King bed was very comfortable. Host was very nice and helpful with restaurant and attraction recommendations. Breakfast was very good with more choices than usual at B & Bs.

The room smelled from bleach ! Lots of dust bunnies ! Generally dirty in appearance! The mattress , bedding and furniture was thrift store quality The "breakfast" was sub par and served in a less than clean dining area, the kitchen was dirty.. The onsite pictures are misleading...The "garden" area was over grown and had broken furniture...not very inviting at all.. The smell of mildew permeated the building... This was not a good experience on any level !!!

The Inn Is located within walking distance of the Mansions and near several good restaurants. The Innkeeper is helpful with recommendations for activities and dining options. Breakfast is excellent with more choices than are often available at B & Bs. There is a refrigerator stocked with drinks and snacks. Beds are very comfortable. The room was a bit small but more than adequate. The price was reasonable by the standards of Newport lodging which tend to be high priced. Parking is available on site.

This inn is located in walking distance to the Thames Ave restaurants on the water and to the mansions on Bellevue. They make it so easy to check in and check out and make sure that you are welcomed upon your arrival. The breakfast was cooked to order and so delicious. The bed was so comfortable and the room was clean. A great place to stay!

I enjoyed my stay at the Artful Lodger very much. My room (Grace's room) on the first floor rear was clean, comfortable and quiet. The B&B is very convenient to the mansions (the Elms is across the street!) and within walking distance of all the attractions and downtown restaurants.
