The Artful Lodger is a bright and airy Victorian built in 1850 located in the Mansion District, and centrally located within 5 minutes from downtown Newport's shopping and dining area. We guarantee you private off-street parking, private baths with all rooms and suites, and an exquisite gourmet breakfast in our conservatory overlooking the Newport Harbor. Our warmest welcome! When you stay with us, you will be neighboring "The Elms," a Newport mansion owned by the infamous robber baron, E. J. Berwind. The mansion is famous for its sunken gardens and lavish parties (even in present day). The secret coal tunnel designed by the coal magnate is steps away from our front door. It was used for discreetly transporting fuel for the first electric lights of the turn of the century elite's "summer cottages." Everything about our stay was fantastic! Phil and the staff were incredibly easy to communicate with before and during our stay and the inn was charming and authentic. Breakfast was AMAZING and cooked to order - definitely not the continental breakfast of store-bought pastries that you get at many other places! So good!!! The homemade biscotti was an excellent touch! I highly recommend the Artful Lodger - We will definitely look to stay here again!

We made a last minute reservation and stayed in a beautiful suite on the second floor. with a fireplace and very comfortable bed. The breakfast room was on the third floor and had a wonderful view. Phil made us a terrific breakfast cooked to order and he was very personable. We walked across the street to the Elms and toured the magnificent property. The B & B is conveniently located to the mansions and many fine restaurants and pubs. We would stay here again. Ralph Cataldo.

This old Victorian house is conveniently situated for walking around downtown Newport. Gardens of one of the more famous of the mansions, the Elms, is just across the street. Phil, the host, is delightful and most considerate of special dietary needs. Not the best place if you have trouble with stairs as the dining area has you looking over the neighboring roof tops. On the other hand there is a small living room on the first floor and obliging Phil is probably able to work something out.

Phil operates a wonderful B&B that is near to many options for dining and also to the famous "mansions". In fact, the Elms is directly across the street from this B&B. We've already booked a return visit. Phil was most thoughtful to adjust his breakfast offerings to accommodate some dietary needs of one of our party. This is NOT a place for someone who cannot manage stairs, I submit. Our breakfast was served in a lovely setting with excellent views, but it is on the 3rd floor (stairs only). There are some accommodations on the first floor and perhaps Phil could arrange to serve someone with mobility considerations in the parlor room, which is nicely outfitted.

Very pleasant stay. When we decided to stay in Newport an additional night we couldn't, there were no rooms available. We would have and wanted to stay one more night at the Artful Lodger.

My wife and I stayed there this fall on a trip back home to the east coast. The house was very nice and our room was great ( Estella). It was a close walk to the mansions and the wharf ( we highly recommend both) and if you like fried clam strips, check out Flo's. Best clam strips ever! Thanks, we'll be back again.

Loved the location of the Artful Lodger....stones throw from many of the mansions. We were able to easily walk to the cliff walk and almost all dining options. Our room was at the front of the house and although a bit of street noise during the day, our sleep was not disturbed at night. The bed was extremely comfortable and the two breakfast we were served were tasty and satisfying ( open faced egg BLTS and pancakes and sausage).

We were very happy with the room and location! Only down side was the breakfasts lacked imagination. The onsite parking was great to have also!!

Great location just a few minutes from the main drag or the mansions. The rooms are old as you would expect, the breakfast is at the top of the stairs with a great view over Newport harbour , which are quite steep, didn't bother us but may be a little more difficult for the elderly. breakfast was good, however I asked for eggs and bacon rather than Phills planned breakfast. He was a good host. We enjoyed ouselves preferring to stay somewhere that isn't too clinicle, like a chain hotel.
