Home away from home

5 on April 26, 2018

We initially stayed at the Benner Mansion because of its proximity to the pool where our son has competitions, which is walking distance. We never thought we would feel like we have a second home in Allentown, or that we would gain lifelong friends in Siobhan and Martin. The breakfasts were perfect nutrition for a swimmer, as were the plethora of healthy snacks that were available. When the swim meets ran late, Siobhan had no problem letting us keep the keys until the evening. We made sure not to tell any of the other swim parents about Benner, because we wanted to make we had it booked for ourselves every time there is a meet!

Luxurious Getaway in Historical City B&B

My daughters and I spent the most beautiful weekend away at the Historic Benner Mansion. Innkeeper, Siobahn, couldn’t be more accommodating. From check in to breakfasts to never-ending snacks and drinks to a wealth of knowledge. Our rooms were divine and we all slept soundly and peacefully. We were warm and comfy. Spoilt luxury every second. We went to an event in the POL Centre just 8 blocks away. Every commododity was at our fingertips. Parking was easy and never a problem. Hot showers, lots of light. I can’t rave enough about the Historic Benner Mansion! Thank you Siobahn!

Sam was welcoming, attentive and considerate of our needs. We had to stay in town for a few extra hours and Sam extended our our stay with no problem. She's generous and always agreeable. I wish everyone was like that. In addition, the dining area in well-stocked and Sam cooks eggs, etc., on weekends.. We will definitely be coming back to this B&B in the future! Sam is a loving, caring person and it shows in her care for her guests. My daughter and I had a fantastic visit to Allentown and part of the reason was due to Sam's hospitality. There's not one unkind bone in her body. So, don't be hesitant about making reservations at this historical property.

At no time in our 2 and a half day stay did a person greet us, check us in or out or see how we were doing. The “innkeeper” came in twice, did not greet us, unlocked the kitchen door and locked himself in. When I knocked on the door to try to meet him I was told, this is Sam’s thing and I have nothing to do with it, did you text her she’s away this weekend. I’m not even supposed to be here I’m usually at work. When I said he could at least greet me and my family he repeated the same comment. There was no prepared breakfast. There were sugary cereals in a drawer along with granola bars and candy bars. There was a bag of bread. There was no fresh fruit, cheese, baked goods or the promised famed “Julia Child scrambled eggs.” When we complained via text, there was a dish of hard boiled eggs on a table the next day but no Innkeeper to go with it. There was milk and orange juice, coffee and tea bags. We all had tea multiple times but with no access to a kitchen we were forced to leave the cups and spoons on a table. In the entire time we were there the garbage was not taken out. There were ants each morning near the bag of bread. There were 2 ants the first day in my bed. AFTER we were home Sam called to “apologize” for our treatment. She offered us our money back but I explained that that was not important to me. What was important is that we were not treated like people staying in a warm welcoming B and B. She spent most of a long phone call telling me how “lovingly” she had restored the mansion, how much it meant to her and how nice her husband, her co-innkeeper, usually is and how he is admired in the community. My concern is that other people, like our family of 4, who like to go to b and bs and not air BnBs for the relationships and the intimacy understand that they may not get what is advertised.

Innkeeper Response
We are heartbroken that Dr Amy was disappointed. We very much look forward to the possibility of a “redo” courtesy of The Historic Benner Mansion. With 1600 guests from 38 states and 13 countries - our goal is to share this wonderful architectural treasure with as many lovers of history and architecture as we can. When we purchased her in 1999, she was boarded up and abandoned with barely any working plumbing or electricity and her gorgeous Italiante front veranda falling off. After raising our family at the mansion, our children walking to elementary, middle and high school from the mansion each day - in our vibrant bustling urban neighborhood in the heart of our city - with State Senators’ home’s behind us and across the street. It’s now a joy to share our family’s restoration with others. We’ve apologized to Amy on the phone for her disappointment - completely breaks our heart that she was so disappointed - and look forward, if she will allow us to repair damage done - with a future stay courtesy of us.

Sam is awesome

We absolutely loved our stay at The Historic Benner Mansion! Sam (innkeeper) was lovely and so knowledge about the history and area. The mansion is gorgeous and pretty close to downtown. Sam also had out snacks like granola bars and little chocolates during non-breakfast hours which was really nice. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in the Allentown area- definitely stay here. We thought it was great!

Everything we were hoping for!

We had a fantastic stay at the Benner Mansion. It was one of the coldest nights of the year but our gorgeous room was warm and cozy. The details were breathtaking. We wish we could have stayed longer! Sam and her team are the best!

Lancaster Bacon and Historic Benner Mansion Scrambled Eggs
We always get rave reviews on our weekend bacon and egg service. Lancaster bacon is terrific and we make "Julia Child" style scrambled eggs - creamy, rich and delicious!
