Everything was so simple from the online registration to the check in and on through with our visit. Very interesting house, great hosts, and the location made it easy to get to raraurants and movie theater. Food was great and the large claw foot rub was just what the doctor ordered. Can't wait to go back.

Our friends Tom and Julie Wood brought us to the 1861 Inn where we met Tom and Carol the proprietors of the 1861 Inn, and Marley the English Springer Spaniel. We were welcomed warmly, toured the Inn, had delightful conversations, ate yummy food, and were amazed at the beauty of the antiques/photos/ceramics. We stayed in the pool cottage and the bed was 'just right' for a very good nights sleep. Coffee and Tea service was brought to our room the next morning which was unexpected. The breakfast Carol made for us allowed us to eat a breakfast that was Gluten-Free and free of other foods that my husband could not eat. Everyone enjoyed the food immensely. And after breakfast Tom regaled us with the history of the Inn and the surrounding area. We will come again and stay longer. Kym and Fred Gordon Portland, Oregon

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay at the 1861 Inn. The claw-foot soaking tub in the Riverview room made for very relaxing evenings. The steam shower was a wonderful continuation of our Swedish massage by a great Masseuse that Carole recommended. Carole served two very delicious breakfasts! We look forward to visiting again in the future.

This was our third visit to 1861 Inn and it was as delightful as we remembered. The Innkeepers attention to detail and thoughtfulness is so refreshing.

I was in Batavia for an event that did not allow me to spend much time at the Inn. However, I loved my little cottage and the hosts were wonderful. The Creme Brulee Peach was just heavenly.

To celebrate our anniversary, we looked for a place that would feel homey yet romantic. The 1861 Inn exactly fit our expectations. We stayed in the household smokehouse that has been recreated as a cozy English cottage. Adjacent to the pool and hot tub, it felt well suited to any special occasion. Carol and Tom, our hosts, welcomed us with a glass of wine and snacks. If we had it to do over again, and I hope we do, we would enjoy one of Carol's gourmet dinners. Breakfast assured us that we would be well fed for the day's adventures. Not only is the food tasty, bit also her presentation rivals an expensive restaurant. Learning the house's story gave insight into its place in local history and its owners. Give The 1861 Inn a try a taste of Ohio hospitality at its best.

The proprietors are the type of people with whom you want to do business. My wife and young baby were in town for a wedding and stayed in the guest house just off the pool. It was lovely and I support this business.

My wife and I wanted to get away for an evening, and the 1861 Inn was close by but still far enough away to make it memorable. If you're looking for amazing cozy rooms and a warm feeling of hospitality, then this is your place. The hosts were very friendly and cooked us an amazing dinner and breakfast. We had food allergy requirements but they were accommodating and still made the food delicious. Will likely go back again.

We got married and spent the day at the zoo, then I surprised her with a stay at 1861 Inn. We have both lived locally for 30 plus years and have never really knew about this magical hidden secret. Now we do, and now we have a secret get away for life! Much easier than planning a whole vacation. The atmosphere and ambiance fit us like a tailored suit! Tom and Carole were warm and sweet like apple pie. The room was amazing, the setting was incredible, and the breakfast...no words are good enough. Thanks Tom and Carole, looking forward to our next stay and all the ones after that too!!!

Carole and Tom go the extra mile to attend to every detail. They are both professional and gracious hosts. The house has interesting history and part of the fun was the host's storytelling of the original owner and the line of family descendants. Carole's cuisine is beautifully prepared and tastefully presented. The bedding was very comfortable, and we enjoyed our screened in porch. A lovely stay.

We loved our stay at the 1861 Inn. Carole and Tom has created a magical place, with a keen attention to historical detail, nice spacious rooms, a great pool, and wonderful food. My wife and I are both vegan and asked if they could accommodate us for breakfast as well as making us a vegan dinner. They gladly said yes and made us a wonderful dinner (later only to find out that we were the first vegan dinner that they had made). That spirit to please and satisfy their customers fills the whole space of the Inn. We hope to be back regularly!

When we arrived to the Inn, we were lead back a secluded lane covered in trees that gave a sense of instant peace and calm that continued through the length of our stay. As soon as we reached the house, we were greeted by a friendly bark announcing our arrival. Carole and Tom are such gracious hosts, we cannot wait to return for our anniversary.

I recently returned to Batavia after a period of over 10 years. My family lives there and I attended school there for a year and half. It was a healing experience since there has been loss and conflict over this time period. Carole and Tom went out of their way to provide a wonderful respite for me. The pool was so refreshing after the hot days of hiking and shopping. The breakfast was outstanding and service spot on. I have stayed in bed and breakfast all over the country and this is one of the best. I highly recommend it.
5 on July 25, 2017
Tom and Carole go so far above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable. The Guesthouse is next to the pool and Carole was kind enough to offer us wine on the 1st night we were there. I cannot overstate the breakfast and it's outstanding presentation. It was delish and lavish. Carole is a culinary genius. Marley the dog is someone I still miss. A very unique dog with an old soul. Tom and Carole generously share him.

While researching a place to stay while visiting a friend in the Batavia area, I stumbled upon the 1861 Inn. What a treasure! Carole and Tom were so gracious and welcoming. The room was adorable and couldn't have been cleaner. We were absolutely thrilled with the gourmet breakfast Carole prepared. We will definitely stay there every time we are in Batavia.

My BF found this place. I wasn't sure what I should expect, but it turned out to be a perfect retreat. Tom and Carole were friendly and gracious hosts. The meals Carole prepared were professionally prepared and delicious, yet it was as if we were dining at our friend's (or at your favourite aunt's) place. Marley, the dog, was a lovable treasure. Quiet retreat and peaceful environment, including morning dip in the pool, made our holiday a very special one. Thank you Carole and Tom.

It took us forever to reserve a room to celebrate our anniversary, we now understand why. Outstanding service, very comforting, and loved everything about the stay. Nothing beats a hammock with crossword puzzle lol...... Thanks again, see ya next time!!!

We so enjoyed our stay at the 1861 Inn. We stayed in "Jenny's Retreat," and it was such a pleasure to relax on the lovely private porch. The inn is very convenient to Cincinnati, and we took a delightful day trip to the art museum there. Carole and Tom are gracious hosts, and their dog Marley is an absolute sweetheart.

Amazing stay wish it could have been longer. Communication prior to arrival was exceptional. Greeting / service could not be faulted. Room comfortable, large, clean and amenities beyond what I would normally have expected. On-site dining one of the best meals we had in the US - fresh, home cooked, delicious, 4 courses. Swimming pool was an added bonus. Honestly this was an amazing oasis after a difficult day of travel, even if the travel hadn't been difficult I would wax lyrical about 1861 Inn. Would definitley come again and will be recommending the Inn to any friends etc travelling in the area

Unfortunately we only had the opportunity to stay 1 night. The Inn is breathtaking, the inn keepers are fantastic and the food was amazing! We really enjoyed our relaxing stay and will definitely return. Carole and Tom provide everything you will need and more.

It was a short stay while we were in town for a family member's graduation. Everything was perfect, including the hosts. From the minute we parked the car to the time we said good-bye, we had just the right amount of service and hospitality without feeling crowded. Some people get the hospitality business and some don't. These folks get it! Highly recommend!

I surprised my husband with a weekend getaway and we couldn't have dreamed up a better weekend away. Tom, Carole and Marley were charming and made us feel like their guests rather than lodgers. The guest cottage was quaint and full of everything you'd ever need--right down to drinks, snacks and even Q-tips. The attention to detail was out of this world right along with Carole's meals. Warm scones on a Sunday morning thrilled my Scottish husband to no end. Tom was full of history about the estate and one of my favorite things at the Inn was where Jennie Penn carved her name in the glass of the library window when she was a child. Many items from the Penn family still exist and have stayed with the house--which is amazing. I have a lot of respect for the history staying there and our hosts sharing it with us. Tom and Carole were so gracious with their home, time and conversation and we truly enjoyed ourselves. Marley can't be skipped--all B&B's need a loveable ambassador like him! Overall, we couldn't have asked for anything more and we are already planning our return soon. You can't go wrong here.

With the house set back from the road the setting is quite park-like. The grounds have delightful sculptures set in garden beds and under trees. From the entrance hall the beautiful taste of Tom and Carole is evident. The hosts are completely relaxed and put you at ease at once. Their dog Marley adopts you at once. With their high ceilings and long windows each room is airy and cheerful. Lovely paints and photos cover the walls including art by a former owner. The breakfast was superb. Who wouldn't want to return? 5 stars. MB

We went to the 1861 Inn a week ago to celebrate our 5th anniversary of being together. The Inn holds a special place in our hearts, as it was here that we first began our relationship. It was also at the Inn that I proposed to my fiance', and our plan is to one day have our wedding there. Carole and Tom are the ultimate innkeepers. The house is beautiful and welcoming, and the breakfasts are to die for. No matter how much we are stressed when we get there, it all seems to melt away as we are waited on hand and foot. You are not treated as just guests, but as family members while you are there. While the Inn is in a small and quaint town, there is so many great places to visit and dine close by that there is never a lack of things to do. The 1861 Inn is now our "go to" place and we have already booked our next visit, this time taking my daughter and son-in-law so they can experience this wonderful place as well.

We stayed the weekend following Thanksgiving of 2016. As usual we had a great time with wonderful hosts. It's always a great trip for us and we were welcomed into the home and hearth of the 1861 Inn. It is always the very first place we think of for a getaway.

We stayed in Jennie's Room and had a great time. Tom and Carole told us all about the history of the place and the food was perfect. They made us feel at home and Marley was so well behaved and made it even more special. It was an anniversary getaway and we spent Saturday visiting Main street in Milford. We highly recommend 1861 Inn and plan to try and visit in the spring when the area is in bloom.

This historic home makes for an excellent overnight experience. It has so much character and the owners have worked hard to preserve the character of the mid-1800's house. The three different rooms all have something unique about them. Let's not forget the breakfast, it is absolutely delicious. You will not be disappointed in your decision to stay at the 1861 Inn.

I stayed overnight after tent camping for three days in the rain, and felt so luxuriously pampered. My room had a clawfoot tub, fireplace and steam shower - so wonderful. When I arrived at 8 pm, there was a welcome sign on the stairs, and Tom brought me a glass of wine and brownies. Breakfast was delicious, and I enjoyed a great talk about books with Carole and Tom in the kitchen afterwards. Highly recommend staying here!

Carole and Tom and their spaniel Marley open their hearts and their home to you in this warm, friendly B & B. The home has been lovingly restored and maintained. We were there for a weekend getaway for our second anniversary. The pampering and attention to detail was amazing, including little things like a small, framed note on the hearth on the fireplace in our room bearing the message "happy anniversary". Carole's food is gourmet in quality and presentation. Tom's stories of the history of the Inn and the surrounding area are enlightening and entertaining. Don't miss this gem if you are in the Cincinnati area..

Carole and Tom are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. Having a perfect B&B is just a plus. They only have 3 rooms, so if you are interested book ASAP (but not when we return) LOL. We stayed in Jenny's retreat, everything was comfortable and very clean. Our room had the original 1861 wood plank floors, so treat them accordingly. We enjoyed the multi course breakfast that Carole prepared, both days of our stay. I don't think we even turned on the TV, reading and relaxing on the porch and the room. The in room Shower had the head directly overhead. The toilet is tucked in a closet, as is the shower. Remember in 1861 that would not be in Jenny's or anyone else's room. The original fireplace in our room is a sink, but the other rooms have a fireplace. Although both nights were booked to capacity, we just saw and heard our fellow travelers at breakfast, that was also a treat. Hot tub and swimming pool right below our porch, accessed by a winding outdoor staircase. I even purchased a hat, that Carole has on display throughout the house, made locally for my wife. Extra points for me!

We loved out cottage at the 1861 Inn. It was a few steps away from the pool and hot tub. We were greeted every morning with a tray of coffee. The food was outstanding! There was so much to do in this area. We kayaked down the Little Miami River, went to Harmony Hills Winery in the evening for some live music and R&R. The next day we went to East Fork Sate Park. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!! We fell in love with Marley!! :-)

We were in town for a wedding and wanted to stay somewhere close by, but there were no convenient hotels. Luckily, we found the 1861 and it was better than any possible hotel stay. Very charming, quiet, and peaceful. Beautiful setting and a beautiful home. The owners served some outstanding breakfasts and then sat and chatted at the end of the meal. Thank you Carole and Tom, for a very nice stay. We would gladly stay with you again, and we have already recommended you to our family in the area for other out of town guests.

Wonderful B&B we found online during our weekend stay in the Cinci area. Batavia really is close to many things in the area - we visited The Ark Encounter in Kentucky, as well as a winery, Jungle Jim's, and Ikea. The Innkeepers are so welcoming, accommodating, and hospitable. The history of this property is so interesting, and the property is impeccable. We opted for Friday evening Dinner, which was truly a culinary delight. Breakfast Saturday morning was the same. Food is EXCELLENT here!!! Their resident dog, Marley, is quite the character and we love dogs, so he was quite welcomed by us!! They are so knowledgeable of the area, offering tips and places to visit. We so enjoyed our brief visit in the "Smokehouse" or "Poolhouse" accommodation. Definitely worth the trip!!

Location perfect - near the city, not in it, but with easy access to good golf and Jungle Jims. The house is nicely decorated in the period, spotlessly clean and not overly cluttered. The breakfast was outstanding and Carole and Tom are perfect hosts - very pleasant and easy to talk to but still give you lots of privacy. Loved the private pool at the end of a very warm day.

Had a business trip to the area and decided to go somewhere other than a Courtyard Marriott. Carole and Tom were gracious hosts. Tom delivered a beer to the pool while I worked. The setting was so much better than a typical chain hotel. Crickets all night. Had a great run in the morning and then a beautiful and delicious breakfast. Marley, the Inn spaniel was also a gracious and loving host. I highly recommend you go out of your way to visit.

We are leery to select B&B's when traveling because we travel mostly for work. Work long days and sometimes nights and are dog tired when we get to our room. We chose 1861 Inn on this trip because it was close to our jobsite and seemed like a perfect place to rest. Boy were we right!!!!! This Inn is the best we have ever stayed in and feel like we made some new friends in Tom and Carole. They are simply the perfect hosts. And their dog Marley....he is so special! We were privileged to get to meet their sweet grandson Henry as well. The breakfasts were out of this world and we are already talking about when we will be back in the area so we can stay again!! Loved this place!!!

For our 6 year anniversary my husband and I wanted to do something different for our anniversary so we decided to choose and Bed and Breakfast. After a lot of looking we decided to visit the 1861 Inn, however we were a little nervous since we had never been to one. Once we arrived and met Carole we instantly knew we made the right choice. The 1861 Inn is a beautiful historic home that is full of character and love! We felt right at home as soon as we walked in. Carole and Tom are both amazing hosts and they went out of their way to make us feel at home, including helping with recommendations for dinner. We were able to enjoy a relaxing evening in the hot tub as well. We also had an amazing breakfast before we left the next morning. They truly made us feel welcome every moment we were there. An extra perk of the bed and breakfast was Marley!! The Inns four-legged canine. Marley was the sweetest dog! He would come running at you wanting pet and loved attention. I loved being able to see Marley! My husband and I both would love to visit the Inn again and I would recommended anyone that wanted a quiet relaxing evening to visit the 1861 Inn. It truly made our anniversary special!

This was mine and my husband's first time at a fed and breakfast and we'll never go back to hotels again if we can help it. Carole and Tom are the most wonderful hosts. They're friendly, welcoming, accommodating and gently care about the people who stay at their Inn. Carole is an amazing chef and makes something different every morning. She doesn't even get upset when you forget to tell her about your hair stands food allergy AFTER she's cooked breakfast. Tom is funny and is a great guide for the historical facts of the property. Their dog Marley is also pretty amazing and if you're lucky you'll get to meet their handsome grandson too. I would recommend this lovely place to anyone and everyone. This will be the place I stay every time I come to Ohio. Outstanding! Exceeded all I'd my expectations and I'm pretty picky!

Thank you for another great memory. Till next time.

Not your normal B&B, Carole and Tom make it family. This was our second stay, it was out of the park awesome.

I stumbled upon this B&B when booking a nearly 2 week business trip in Batavia, OH -- just outside Cincinnati. I was a little concerned about how I would like staying there . . . especially for business. Those concerns were quickly alleviated when I arrived and met my hosts . . . Tom and Carole are absolutely wonderful! They made me feel very comfortable and were extremely accommodating to my needs. I stayed in the Guest Cottage, which is next to the pool. It's an adorable room and was very comfortable (it was originally built as the smokehouse). Due to the necessary early arrival at my client each day, I unfortunately did not get to enjoy Carole's breakfasts during the week. However, she ensured I had fresh fruit, yogurt, breakfast bars and hot tea in my room each day, as well as the water bottles that were in the fridge in my room. She also is a wonderful baker and kindly provided her tasty treats for me to enjoy throughout the week. I was very excited to be able to enjoy Carole's culinary expertise over the weekend, when she made terrific breakfasts! Carole also shared with me the history of this great home and, interestly enough, they have many artifacts from the original owners - including family photos passed along with the house and the artwork of the original owner's daughter! Extremely interesting! In addition, they have a wonderful dog named Marley, who has a sweet temperament. For me this was the greatest gift. Being away from home for work for nearly two weeks is difficult . . . I miss my home and my own pets . . . but Marley greeted me each day and was definitely a bright spot in a long business trip. Indeed, it felt like my home away from home. Finally, on the last day there I learned that Tom & Carole also have a little candle shop in town. I love candles, so I went to check it out and found some cute items to buy. If you like candles, be sure to ask them about this. The 1861 Inn is a 'must visit' when in the Cincinnati area!

When looking for a B&B who would have thought there would be a little known treasure in Batavia, Ohio. My wife and I have stayed in many B&B's over the last 15 years from Kentucky to Virginia to Maine and found The 1861 Inn to be one of the best overall experiences we've had. The beautifully appointed home offered all the amenities for a quiet, relaxing stay. We recommend you opt for the evening dinner, the food was prepared and served to perfection by your gracious hosts;Tom and Carol. We highly recommend The 1861 Inn and will be returning to enjoy another relaxing visit.

FANTASTIC service! These people have certainly earned one of the spots for being among the "Top Ten Bed and Breakfasts in Cincinnati". Carol and Tom offered nothing but the best in everything; from the breathtaking views of the grounds outside, to the priceless home furnishings inside..all of which entailed some fascinating history! Delicious food, great hospitality, and even a friendly dog, to add, made this experience well worth every penny! We will be back!

I am a pretty picky traveler and it takes a lot to impress me. From the moment we approached the Inn’s sign on the side of the road, to the picturesque ride up the drive to the main home, to the stunning grounds, painstakingly cared for and meticulously decorated home, unmatched service from Tom and Carole, and the lengths to which the hosts and property go to ensure your stay is absolutely perfect…this is an unparalleled experience. The only thing that could have made our stay better would have been choosing to stay at the Inn for more than one night! The breakfast was delicious and Tom and Carole both ensure you have everything you need from wine upon arrival, complimentary snacks at all times, to fresh coffee delivered to your door in the morning. We stayed in Jenny's Retreat where the original hardwood floors are breathtaking and the bed was perhaps one of the most comfortable I've slept in. A plate of mouthwatering brownies were delivered to our room at some point while we were out for dinner! The private porch was a lovely addition for our morning coffee listening to the birds chirp and looking out over the pool below. I could go on… Overall, highly recommended. Thank you Tom and Carole for living and breathing hospitality like we have never seen before. This is now our new ‘go-to’ place! Thank you for a lovely night spent in your beautiful Inn.

My wife and I chose the 1861 Inn instead of a hotel/motel when we visited Batavia for two nights. Because we would not have time for breakfast the second morning, due to us having to catch a 7:15 A.M. flight, Carole prepared a light lunch for us on our arrival. The next day we had a very early morning appointment and couldn't fit in breakfast, but again Carole accommodated us and served a late breakfast upon our return. Both meals were excellent in taste and presentation. And, just as important to us, she prepared our dishes vegan to suit our life style. Our stay was great and so much more pleasant than if we had chosen a hotel or motel. The Cottrills are friendly and intent on pleasing their guests. Their house is charming with interesting history, and Marley, the beautiful dog, is a real treat.

My wife and I spent one night at 1861 for our 3rd wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed it. Carol and Tom were very hospitable with great service and the Penn house was very beautiful. I enjoyed hearing some of the history of the home. It was well decorated and very clean, we left feeling refreshed and relaxed!

There I was, on Friday evening of our anniversary weekend, trying to come up with a decent "Plan B." Our initial wish for a weekend get away to a cottage in the woods had fallen through due to other commitments. I was trying to figure out which of these nearer options wouldn't feel like "settling for less." Carole, Tom and Marley came through for us. What a wonderful old home, gracious and friendly hosts, and fabulous breakfast. We loved hearing the history of the place on our arrival, relaxed by the fire in our room before retiring for the night, and had a breakfast that was way beyond expectations. The little touches abounded, and the entire experience made us realize that this should have been our Plan A all along!

Took my wife to 1861 Inn for a surprise night's stay. Carol and Tom were wonderful in sharing the house with us, the history and all. We stayed in the small cozy quest house out by the pool and enjoyed all aspects of it. Very comfortable and a real delight for me and my wife. The breakfast was great and company of Carol and Tom was equally great. The value for all things was well worth it. Looking forward to spending some more time there.

This is a solid 10. We found this beautiful and friendly inn to be absolutely magical. The ambiance, the antiques and setting were beyond words. The kindness and generosity of the owners, Carol and Tom made our time here relaxing and welcoming. Their generosity of time in relating the history of their home added to the great and memory-making weekend. The excellent and creative breakfast started the day and the relaxing time sitting on the porch in the evening completed our day.

Nancy Kibbey Young — 5 starWe stayed at the 1861 Inn last weekend for my birthday. My husband could not have picked a better place. It was peaceful and we enjoyed some much needed rest and relaxation. We spent hours by the pool reading and time in the pool swimming and floating. Tom and Carole were wonderful and welcoming and seemed to have thought of everything. The rooms were beautiful and cozy and had everything we needed. We loved hearing about the history of the inn and taking a tour. Breakfast both days was so beautiful to look at and a pleasure to eat. Marley, the resident springer spaniel is so well mannered and fun to play with. I looked forward to seeing him each day We are looking forward to a return trip!

My husband and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary, our first time at a bed and breakfast. Wow! The house and grounds are so beautifully kept and you can see the love and hard work that Carole & Tom have put into every inch of it. We loved hearing all the rich history of the house and the keepsakes they have from way back are so interesting to see. The pool was fantastic - we spent so much time in there Tom told us we were going to get water logged! The inn will definitely be a new quick getaway for us. We stayed in Jenny's room which was lovely and had a private screened deck and private staircase to the pool. Oh, and how could I forget..... the breakfast was FANTASTIC. Thank you for everything Tom & Carole.

I was looking for somewhere special to take my husband to celebrate his birthday. The 1861 Inn intrigued me since my husband enjoys history and historical places. All the reviews I read were so positive and as it turns out they were also spot on!! Carole and Tom are a superb hostess and host duo. The 1861 Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. We would not hesitate to recommend the Inn and hope to go back again soon! Monica K.

Let me start by saying that the 1861 Inn had some very large shoes to fill in our minds as we were married at another B&B last year that has since closed. We had been to this previous one 8 + times and adored the innkeepers. To put it mildly, we were blown away!!! Tom and Carole were the most gracious hosts and the Inn itself and the surroundings are just as spectacular! We stayed in the Guest Cottage and it was lovely, charming, cozy and the bed very comfortable. We spent all day lounging by the pool, hubby even dozed off a couple times on the raft!! Carole and Tom joined us in the evening poolside and we chatted for hours like long lost friends! The breakfasts were not only delicious, but the presentation was just as beautiful! Tom is a delightful storyteller and shared the history of the Inn one morning at breakfast. I would highly recommend the 1861 Inn; in fact we have already booked another weekend in August!!

The 1861 Inn has everything you need. It could not have been more comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were decadent and made ready for any us anytime we wanted them. The owners were delightful. The house and the grounds were amazing. We stayed from Thursday through Sunday, July 16-20 2015 and truly hope we will have another opportunity to stay at the 1861 Inn. The Barr's Winter Park , FL

The 1861 Inn was the perfect place to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. Carole and Tom have put a lot of thought and effort into making their beautiful home a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay. They’re the real deal - hosts who truly have it in their hearts to serve their guests and make them comfortable. We’ve never felt more appreciated at any place we’ve ever stayed before. As we were settling in, Tom offered to bring us a beer or a glass of wine. We mentioned our dinner preferences and they recommended an outstanding restaurant that turned out to be just what we had in mind. In the evening, we took advantage of the outdoor jacuzzi and the romantic setting. We stayed in Jenny’s Retreat, and it was everything we hoped for when we booked our reservation. The room was lovely and very well appointed. We even had our own screened in porch. The bed was so comfortable that we ended up sleeping like a couple of babies. In the morning, Tom brought coffee right to our room. Shortly afterwards, we went to the Dining Room where Carole served up a breakfast that was off the charts. She made from scratch, gourmet fare that included, among other things, a stack of Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with fresh blueberries. She even gave us the recipe before we left. Looking at it after we got home confirmed what we knew at breakfast: our pancakes weren't quick or easy to make. That’s an illustration of how Carole and Tom do things, and how they blessed our stay at the 1861 Inn.

We had a 'second' honeymoon getaway weekend at the 1861 Inn in November 2014, and loved it! Very romantic, quiet, and our room was beautiful. It was exactly the sort of relaxing weekend we needed. Carole and Tom made great recommendations for dinner, and we had a nice time checking out the shops in a nearby town. Breakfast was delicious, and the conversation with our hosts was even better! We can't wait to go back to see how big baby Henry is!

Had a wonderful stay at 1861 Inn for my husband's birthday on May 6. Tom and Carole were wonder hosts and their dog, Marley, was a hoot! From the time we arrived, we we given a historic tour of the premises and catered to. We stayed in Jenny's room which was very nice and clean. The private balcony was screened in and overlooked the pool area. I can't say enough about this gem, except that we had a marvelous time! Will definitely return.

This was our first stay at 1861 Inn and we had a wonderful time. My husband and I have stayed at several different B/B's and it's neat to see how unique each one is. We were met out in the driveway, by both Tom and Carol. Such a great couple! Tom gave us a tour of the B/B and told us the historic part of it. He brought coffee up to our room each morning. Because it was our Anniversary we had a nice treat in our room that Carol had made. Carol is an awesome cook and each breakfast was delicious! I even was able to get a couple recipes. :) Thank you Tom and Carol for being such great hosts and for helping us celebrate our 25th Anniversary and making our stay so Memorable!

My husband and I stayed in the cottage during our stay at 1861. Carol and Tom are wonderful hosts - because my husband and I have an old home, they took us for a "tour" around the house to show us the wonderful and historical elements of the house. Carol is a wonderful cook - the breakfast was very delicious. Tom was kind enough to deliver some coffee to us as we got ready. My husband loved the specially crafted mugs that we purchased two of them! And of course, if you're missing your dog, Marley is always game for a nice a belly scratch! We definitely would stay at the 1861 Inn again if we ever travel back/through Cincinnati.

This was a truly charming B&B. Carole and Tom were very welcoming and really went out of their way to try to make our stay comfortable. The breakfasts were sumptuous and delicious. We stayed in the guest cottage, which was a little on the small side but still wonderful - since it's in the property's old smokehouse, we expected it to be a little small, so no real complaint there. They made very good use of that space and we were quite comfortable. There is a dog on the premises, so if you're allergic you'll have issues, but we love dogs so no problem there. Can't really think of anything bad to say about the place - it was great.
5 on March 17, 2015
This is one of the nicest places I have stayed! The room was huge and quite frankly I could have planted myself in that claw foot tub! The inn keepers are very friendly and knowledgable about the history of the property, and the breakfast was fantastic. The inn is close enough to Cincinnati to see and do what you want, but far enough out to be peaceful and quiet with really nice scenery. If you have never been here you absolutely should! We will definitely be going back.
5 on February 16, 2015
As repeat guest, we have always enjoyed Tom and Carol. They are the best hosts. We have stayed a several B&B's but Tom and Carol are hands down the best. Then there is Marley. He gets excited when guests arrive and then just melts to the floor when you start petting him. As always, breakfast was amazing. Planning on a return visit in the spring and summer. If you are reading this review and you've never been, it needs to be added to your to do list. You will not be disappointed.

Tom and Carole are so welcoming! Rooms were amazing! Breakfast was delicious! Can only say 2 negative things about the 1861 Inn: 1) Only one night is not enough time to spend there and 2) we couldn't bring Marley home with us. We will definitely be returning.

The 1861 Inn is the epitome of what a B&B experience should be. I was in the Cincinnati area for business and decided to ‘break the mold’ and try something different from staying in a typical road warrior hotel. Innkeepers Tom and Carole were incredibly gracious and detailed the long history of the pre Civil War property. After a brief tour of the home, I relaxed and enjoyed a fine Kentucky bourbon in the Inn’s cozy study while conversing about the various artworks in the house. If you are lucky, their loving spaniel Marley may stroll into the study to say hello. Ask to see the water closet just off the study, as it includes dozens of photos of dogs they have know, or possibly even a photo of your dog if you choose to send them one. I slept in Jenny’s Room, which includes a private screened porch with a wonderful view of the pool and wooded back yard. Unfortunately it was too cool in February to fully enjoy the porch, but I will definitely return in the Spring with my girlfriend, when the grounds begin to green. The bed in Jenny’s room was warm and one of the most comfortable I have slept in. The mornings breakfast was something you will never experience in a Marriott, etc., hotel as I was delighted with a warm fruit compote, and an amazing breakfast soufflé. Give yourself time to enjoy the breakfast, and a second, or third cup of coffee.

My husband and I planned a getaway after ten years and four kids. We were not disappointed. Carole and Tom were fantastic, warm, welcoming hosts who completely put us at ease. The food was delectable, the lodging comfortable, clean and sumptuous; and the overall stay was a relaxing delight. We felt so spoiled when we got back home to reality, we found ourselves wishing for Carole and Tom! Highly recommend!!

We have stayed with Carole and Tom several times over the past few years and each time we have found the accommodations to be consistently high quality. The innkeepers are gracious and friendly, the food is careflly prepared, and the rooms are large and comfortable. The Inn has an historic charm that adds to the total experience.

we were looking for a "rural bnb experience" before our 2nd child arrived. we were not interested in traveling far, and delighted to find 1861 Inn in old Batavia. It couldn't have been more appropriate for what we wanted...7 acres, beautiful old estate, quiet, cozy, and friendly. Tom and Carole were great. The were professional, experienced inn-keepers. They were accommodating with small things that kept my wife comfortable during late pregnancy, the food was outstanding, and their joy about operating the bnb was infectious. We will return.

We enjoyed our stay at 1861 Inn. Carole and Tom were delightful hosts and the room (Riverside Room) was very cozy and relaxing. The soaking tub is the biggest I've ever used and the shower doubles as a steam room. Carole also made us a 4 course meal. The shrimp and grits were very tasty and the endless wine made it a very lovely evening in. We would like to come back in the summer to take advantage of the pool and hot tub! Allergy note: My husband and I both suffer from allergy (dust and dog) but did not have trouble even in this old house. Everything was kept very clean. If you have a dog allergy, just let the owners know in advance. We did not mention it but did not have any trouble.

We were looking for a B & B in the Cinci area and ended up at 1861 Inn. Tom and Carole were exceptionally friendly, very attentive, and made sure that we were settled comfortably. They provided dinning options (that were excellent) and directions to various places around town. The breakfasts on both days were plentiful and excellent. The setting was quiet and secluded, yet easy to get to and convenient to the area and Cincinnati. The room and bed was comfortable and we had access to other parts of the Inn. I would definitely recommend 1861 Inn.

We had our fall getaway at the 1861 Inn this year and it was wonderful. The food was outstanding and I ate way too much but it was worth every bite. We wanted all the recipes. We were greeted our first night by Marley the dog and sat in the library which was filled with interesting books, with a glass of wine and great conversation with the innkeepers, Tom and Carol. The rooms were relaxing, the bed very, very comfortable. The chocolate left out for us were a real treat. All the rooms of the Inn were covered with so many antiques and other items of interest. We wanted to stay another day just to look at everything. Tom gave us excellent ideas of places to eat dinner and explore. He also told us the interesting history of the Inn itself. We look forward to coming here again. The grounds were beautiful with all the flowers and trees in the fall, so we would love to see it in the spring and/or summer too. Definitely a place to check out if you are every in the area or need a getaway from all the hassles of the everyday world.

We enjoyed our stay here so much we didn't want to leave. Every aspect of our stay from the location, to the rooms, to the food was outstanding. The location of the 1861 Inn is both beautiful and convenient, you can get to Cincinnati in 15-20 minutes and there are several very cool small towns even closer. The owners were so nice and welcoming, they made you feel like you were part of their family. They know the houses' history and the history of the surrounding area inside and out. The house itself is great, both very historic and very comfortable. The food was delicious, completely different every day so each breakfast was an unique experience.

Last weekend was my girlfriend's birthday and, as part of the weekend I planned, I booked the guest house at the 1861 Inn. First of all, the place is gorgeous inside and out, being a Civil War era property nestled in the woods. And we couldn't say enough about Tom and Carole, the innkeepers--they're absolutely fantastic, outgoing, and attentive. Carole brought wine out to the guest house while we made dinner reservations (at a place Tom suggested) and got ready to go out, and Tom brought us coffees on a tray the next morning at 8:30 sharp, exactly when he said he would do so. Oh, and about that dinner suggestion--Tom nailed it. The place was a fifteen minute drive away on a quaint, village street and our meals were out of this world. We had a few minor gripes: the bed was a tad hard for our taste, the fireplace in the guest house hadn't been made ready for the winter yet and wasn't usable, and the guest house bathroom was a little small. However, it had been 80 degrees the week before, so we can't blame them for the fireplace issue, and the bathroom size is simply a limitation set by the structure of the historic guest house, so it's not really the innkeepers' fault at all. And anyway, the overall experience was so much more than anything we would take off marks for. To shorten the review: Carole's breakfast was delicious, the history Tom shared about the house and its previous residents, as well as the architecture and even the furniture was fascinating, and they even had a recommendation and tips for an upcoming trip we have planned for Toronto! We feel spoiled that this was our first time at a B&B, because Tom & Carole at the 1861 just shined in every respect, and this at a budget price that, looking back, seems almost criminally low compared to hotels where I've stayed in the past.
5 on October 04, 2014
This is the second time that I have stayed in a B&B but the first for 1861 Inn. I have to say that it was more delightful that the other B&B. Breakfast was wonderful! If you went away hungry, it was your own fault. Carole and Tom were very friendly and went out of their way to include us in their activities. I definitely would recommend it to anyone and I am looking forward to returning.
5 on October 01, 2014
This was our first stay ever at a B&B. It was a superb experience. 1861 is in a great location. It is far enough out of Cincinnati to be able to enjoy the country side, yet close enough to go into town for events or business or entertainment. Tom and Carole are great, relaxed hosts, but both have that quiet competence that ensures your stay is great. Whenever you go into your room, look around quickly for the surprise snack. There is usually one there!

This is our 3rd visit to The 1861 Inn and we will certain return should we come through the area again. We spent 3 nights at the inn this visit and slept like babies each night . .I really want to know how come these beds seem more comfy than my tempur-pedic at home. Maybe I should've taken a peek! Our room was very spacious and we loved that openness. Coffee is awesome, breakfasts are delicious and more than filling. No one is rushed and we find it interesting to chat with other guests. Tom and Carole are very relaxed yet attentive hosts. We felt from the get go that our comfort is their priority. The grounds are beautiful and you should allow yourself to be drawn to one of two porches to catch up on reading or work.. . . or swing. I find myself caught up in the history of this inn as the owners have added more photos and information on staircase walls. We will return!

I try always to stay at a B&B when traveling and so feel confident to say that 1861 Inn combines authenticity with top-notch modern conveniences. The decor is fitting with a home built mid-19th century with the exception of the bathrooms, which have been modernized with the highest quality materials. Everything is spotlessly clean and comfortable. Tom and Carol are wonderful hosts and Tom's directions are better than Google maps. I encourage a stay at 1861 Inn to sip coffee on the porch, enjoy the grounds and relax in Tom and Carol's expansive hospitality.

I just wish we'd had more time to spend. Tom was very pleasant and accommodating. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. A nice touch was a pot of tea delivered to our bedroom door in the morning. Our room was homey, comfortable and decorated very nicely. I so very much wanted to bathe in that tub!! Thank you very much for your hospitality!

Very convenient location- easy access to Main St. Batavia as well as Rt.32 for Eastgate area. We heard zero road noise at night, and that alone was worth the money. It was just a bonus to have no obnoxious travelers' children running the halls like we have experienced in too many commercial hotels. The hospitality and breakfast selections were exceptional. Overall, a pleasant, restful experience for our party. For space considerations, however, we recommend the suites in the main house.

We're new to Ohio and we're not familiar with lodging in and around Cincinnati. I searched the internet for options and something about the 1861 Inn caught my attention. I kept coming back to it after reviewing other properties. It was a perfect choice. Tom and Carole were wonderful and so very kind in every way. They recommended a terrific restaurant in a charming setting--a perfect start my wife's birthday celebration weekend. The inn is beautiful and we really enjoyed the serenity of the private porch overlooking the pool and forest behind it. The breakfasts were delicious and their company added so much to the experience. Tom & Carole's spaniel Marley was also a hit with both of us. He's a sweet boy and also great company. We also loved the relaxing, rural feel of the area and particularly on their beautiful property. Yet Cincinnati riverfront venues were only 25-30 minutes away. We very highly recommend the 1861 Inn. You'll be extremely happy with your stay.

The 1861 Inn is one I would choose again for a vacation stop. It was extremely clean, with delicious breakfasts offered to its guests. The rooms were very spacious and the bath area had lots of space to "park" your personal items. The atmosphere, as well as the owners, were very welcoming. If you choose the 1861 Inn B&B, you will not be disappointed.

We were b&b rookies and were so pleasantly surprised and pleased with our experience. Carole and Tom were most gracious hosts and the inn itself is a historical marvel--with all the comforts of a modern home. There was something interesting around every corner. We will definitely return.

What a wonderful place stay! The accommodations are comfortable and the dining is gourmet. The house is full of rich history, but the innkeepers have brought in their own personal touches. My favorite memories are the wonderful breakfasts and the front porch swing. The breakfasts were a great surprise every day and they were served with personal attention and service. The front porch swing was a step back in time, when things moved more slowly. Especially the morning shade, it is a special place to "hang out". And don't forget you are near Cincinnati with all of the entertainment and dining th Queen City has to offer.

The 1861 Inn was a wonderful place to stay in Southern Ohio. My wife and I were in a pinch during a recent trip to Indiana and Ohio. We were due to arrive in Southern Ohio on Sunday, and we received a call on Saturday from the owner of our previously booked Bed and Breakfast notifying us that they needed to cancel our reservation due to extenuating maintenance on the room. With less than 24 hours to locate a new place to stay, we went to B&B.com and found the 1861 Inn. In finding the 1861 Inn, we found a lovely B&B to rest at during our two days in Southern Ohio. We enjoyed the privacy that we had out in the pool house, while still having the feel of a B&B. The owners of the B&B were extremely accommodating and had great recommendations for places to eat and sights to see while we were in that area. The 1861 Inn provided to be a great surprise on our trip, and it is a place that we plan to return to the next time we are in the Cincinnati area.

We spent the night at the 1861 Inn in the Pool Cottage to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. This was our first stay at a B&B and we will definitely return. Tom and Carole were so kind and welcoming. The cottage was cozy and perfect for our little getaway. Our favorite part of our stay was the pool/hot tub! Everything was clean and comfortable. We loved the "Sweet Dreams" surprise that we found on our bedside table before bedtime. We loved visiting with Marley and hearing Tom's stories about the house. Carole was warm and welcoming right from the start. The 1861 is a perfect place to stay!

My sister and I spent 3 wonderful nights at the beautiful 1861 Inn. The house is cozy and full of warmth. Our room was comfortable and had its own private balcony overlooking the pool. We spent the evening hours on the balcony enjoying the gentle breeze and watching all the fireflies lighting up the sky. Tom and Carole are kind, fun to talk to and are very accommodating. Breakfast was delicious. If we are ever in the area again, we will certainly stay at the 1861 Inn.

The hosts as well as being friendly and knowledgeable about the property's history also have impeccable taste. This is very attractive and clean inn with an interesting history. Carole is an excellent chef and we enjoyed our breakfast in the pretty dining room with the other quests. We liked the cottage where we stayed. It is poolside and has a small shower with the sink in the sleeping room. There is also a small room which has chairs and a sofa. The cottage's only disadvantage could be the proximity to the pool if it was being used and you are a light sleeper. We heard the pool recirculation pump vibration late at night.

Tom and Carole are quite nice. Marley is such a loving pup! Breakfast was pretty good as well. Would highly recommend staying here.

First off, let me begin with how hospitable Carole and Tom are - the B&B owners. My partner and I were blown away by all the tiny details that made our stay comfortable and special. Everything was very clean. This B&B is in the perfect location to get to area attractions and yet it feels secluded enough for the purpose of "getting away from it all". Their good-spirited dog, Marley, enjoys making new friends and was a delight. I informed Carole, when making my reservation, that I have Celiac and needed gluten-free accommodations. When I arrived she mentioned she has a couple good friends with Celiac and is very familiar with it - for breakfast she made gluten-free biscuits, a fruit and yogurt dish (my favorite!!!), and an egg/sausage/hash brown bake. All of which were gluten free! Everyone has breakfast together and we all enjoyed the gluten-free breakfast together...I really appreciated that. Her tea and coffee is also gluten-free. I would suggest bringing any gluten-free cookies or dessert if you would want, as she didn't have any, though for longer stays she might provide some. They are also very close to Jungle Jims, which offers a huge gluten free section if you need something. Carole and Tom take an interest in their guests and I really appreciated their efforts to get to know us. We will be going back!

My wife and I loved everything about the 1861 Inn! Our balcony room was superb. We sat out on the screened-in balcony and enjoyed the birds chirping and leaves in the trees rustling. Very peaceful. Tom and Carole were the perfect hosts. Upon arrival, Tom gave us the grand tour of the wonderful home and all of its history. At the last minute I requested a birthday package for my wife and Carole delivered! Fantastic cake, truffles, and a bottle if champagne. Wonderful surprise for my wife. Tom and Carole cooked up a splendid breakfast in the morning. Wonderful service and wonderful company as well. Don't hesitate to book a night or two at the 1861 Inn. You'll love it!!! My wife Chrystal and I first stayed at The 1861 Inn in September-2013. We had a great weekend and did not want to leave. The 1861 offers a very relaxing atmosphere, top notch service, and spotless clean rooms. The owners Carole and Tom go above and beyond to make your stay a great experience. Chrystal and I returned and stayed in May-2014 and our stay was wonderful. The atmosphere, cleanliness, service, and hospitality shown by Carole and Tom is second to none. The 1861 Inn is definitely our "go to" place, and when we checked out I made a reservation for July because we can't wait to go back! Sincerely, Chrystal And Chad Zimmerman

My husband and I sought a three day retreat to replenish our souls. The 1861 Inn, located in Batavia, Ohio, exceeded our expectations! Owners Tom and Carole provided a warm welcome as well as a brief overview of the beautifully appointed home's rich history. They then listened to our needs and guided us to area events, sights, and restaurants to meet those needs. It was a true treat to find Carole's delicious, homemade brownies on the night stand. And falling asleep in our spotless, well- maintained room was effortless on the luxurious featherbed. Breakfasts were a delightful experience, especially the baked goods and flavorful recipes. But the highlight was when Carole prepared a gourmet dinner for my husband and I. The multi-course meal, prepared with our input, was exquisite! The couple was sensitive to our need for privacy but we absolutely enjoyed our conversations with them. We are already planning our second visit to the 1861 Inn!

My husband and I stay exclusively in B&B's, whenever possible. We do our "homework" before ever making a reservation. We have been very fortunate in our experiences. This Inn and it's Innkeepers did not disappoint! Wonderful old, well maintained home with a lot of history. Very hospitable hosts who obviously enjoy meeting people and treating them as guests! Carole is masterful in the kitchen...the dinner she prepared for us and breakfast the following morning were excellent! I look forward to purchasing her soon to be published cookbook! We would definitely return!

We live 25 minutes from the 1861 Inn, yet we felt like we were 25 hours from home! This provided the perfect getaway weekend for us to enjoy the beautiful spring weather. The hospitality provided by Carole and Tom was fantastic and the breakfasts were true culinary pleasures. We hope to visit again!

Carole and Tom made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in the door! They shared the history of the home with us, which my husband found particularly interesting! This was our very first stay at a bed and breakfast and we LOVED it!! We felt pampered and very relaxed. The rooms were sooooo very cozy and lovely... the grounds were lovely as well. I have to say, though, the food was over the top amazing!! I'm not sure what I was expecting, but Carole served the most scrumptious meals I may have ever had! Serioulsy, if you want to "splurge" a bit, include dinner in your stay...you'll be glad you did! Sincerely, Eileen

My daughter and I recently stayed at the 1861 Inn and what a lovely time we had! Tom and Carole were such gracious hosts and the breakfasts were delicious. We stayed in Jenny's Retreat and thoroughly enjoyed coffee in the morning (delivered by Tom) and wine in the evening on our private screened porch. We've stayed at several B & B's and this was our favorite by far. I can't wait to bring my husband for a visit!

Tom & Carole's 1861 Inn is delightful and charming. The room was perfect for our anniversary stay - especially the real fireplace! The following morning, over a grand breakfast, we were regaled with tales from the past relating to the Inn and the people that lived there. The hospitality and service was second to none. The breakfast was magnificent. We thoroughly enjoyed the time with our fellow guests over the scrumptious morning meal. As a usually timid and private couple - we were put at ease with Tom & Carole's easy conversations and impeccable manners. We spent our honeymoon 19 years ago at bed and breakfasts in Savannah, Georgia. Tom and Carole easily outperformed our fond memories of the Southern B&B's.

Just spent a weekend in Cincinnati and stayed at the 1861. It was great!! Tom was a wonderful host and his Springer Spaniel "Marley" was a perfect gentleman. Located in a very quite suburb just a short drive to the city, this inn is both historic and very comfortable. We are definitely looking forward to our next trip to the 1861.
5 on March 21, 2014
The Inn was charming. Our room was very comfortable with a queen sized bed, claw footed soaking tub, steam shower and fireplace. Perfect for a chilly night. Tom and Carole were very gracious, giving us a tour and history of their historic home.

We randomly chose this B&B a little over 2 years ago. We are so happy that we did! We have returned several times since, and every time has provided us with the rest and relaxation that we have been seeking. Carole and Tom have made us feel like family. We've been to other B&B's, but have never found one that provides such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Oh yeah, the food is out of this world! We'll be back soon!

I needed a last minute location to stay due to an emergency weather event and Carole and Tom went out of their way to accommodate me. The overall experience was excellent, their hospitality outstanding, and the Inn top notch. I fully plan on stopping back with my wife under a more reasonable situation.

Our experience could not have been more wonderful. Tom and Carole took a very last minute reservation for a special occasion we were celebrating. They were able to accommodate my request to have a cheese and chocolate covered strawberry tray in the room to pair with a special bottle of wine we had. The room was very romantic with lots of candles and a fireplace. Since we were there a few days before Christmas we were able to enjoy all of the holiday décor, which was so charming! Our stay ended with a fantastic breakfast followed by a very interesting historical tour of the home. Carol even shared a recipe for the most fantastic scones we have ever eaten! Thanks so much for a wonderful experience, we hope to see you again in the future!

This was our first time staying in a bed and breakfast so we were wondering how this would be. Well, we had an absolutely fabulous weekend!!! From Tom greeting us upon our arrival, Carol's wonderful breakfasts, the coziness of the Cottage (including a fireplace), to delicious chocolate covered strawberries, we could not have asked for a better weekend. We plan on making this stay an annual event. BTW - We like riding bike trails and The 1861 Inn was the closest to a trailhead.

This is mine and my husband's second stay at the Inn and it was yet nothing less than outstanding! We love coming to the Inn to celebrate our Anniversary. Nothing beats a wood burning fireplace in every room, a claw foot tub and steam shower in our room, porches, screen in patios, beautiful wooded acres, delish food, and such great hospitality! Who wouldn't want to come here for a little romantic getaway? We highly recommend The 1861 Inn to others and we will be coming here as an annual tradition :)

My husband and I stayed at the 1861 Inn for our Anniversary. We stayed in the Cottage which was very comfortable and cozy. I especially loved the décor and the food Carole prepared was amazing. We also indulged in having massages poolside and the hot tub/spa after dinner. We wish we could have stayed longer but other commitments allowed us only one night. We also enjoyed the tour of the estate and Tom telling us the history of the Inn We look forward to staying again and highly recommend the 1861 Inn to others. Rick and Jennifer

A very special place! We spent our honeymoon at the Inn, and everything was as elegant and comfortable as we'd hoped. Carole is a fantastic cook; not only are breakfasts wonderful but dinner is an option, too. Take it! (Extra charge; reserve in advance.) Four beautiful courses, served with warmth and charm by Tom and Carole. The Inn is done up with "homey sophistication," no hint of stuffiness. Artful touches everywhere and scrupulously clean. Highlights of Jenny's Retreat, where we stayed, are the sleigh bed, rich rose-colored walls, and private screened-in porch overlooking the pool--wonderful in daytime or by candlelight. Enjoy!
5 on August 25, 2013
A wonderful experience on a rainy weekend. Breakfast was outstanding, the pool was great, and Jenny's Retreat was a romantic getaway for my wife and I. The room came with a surprise of a dozen roses and then chocolate covered strawberries were waiting when we returned from dinner. Tom and Carole are fantastic hosts that make it feel you are coming for a long overdue visit with family.

We recently stayed at 1861.Our only regret , it was not a longer stay , but we will meet again. Real good people run this place and you can tell they take pride in their home as well as themselves. Clean is an understatement.Breakfast-great! Very cool old house along with the history. Took a stroll through the woods in the morning and met a doe with 2 fawn. That completed the stay, very pretty. A feeling of warmth and hospitality was clearly present during our recent visit. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing ambience, beautifully decorated rooms and exceptional dining; all graciously extended by the innkeepers Tom and Carol. The meals alone merit recognition each expertly prepared and providing both visual and culinary delights. In addition to the above refelctions, the lovely pool and surrounding landscapes was a perfect place to linger during lazy afternoons and early evenings. The 1861 Inn comes with our highest recommendations - a very special respite.

I recently stayed at 1861, making it my third visit. And it won't be my last. I needed a little retreat for myself and some quiet time. The smokehouse converted into a cozy cottage was just the ticket. Enjoyed the rocking chair on the front porch during a light rain, relaxed in and by the pool, had excellent company at breakfast with fellow lodgers and Tom and Carol. The food, as always, is wonderful and they always honor my food limitations. I feel like visiting with Tom and Carol is like visiting with extended family. Highly recommend.

Original, delicious breakfasts. Clean, beautiful rooms. In Jenny's Retreat room, European water closet-style bathroom a little awkward and very small (to state the obvious), but screened-in porch was wonderful for reading and candle light. Nice pool and spa out back. Host and hostess were both warm and friendly--very hospitable and helpful. All in all, a great place to stay.

I was looking for a quiet place to stay to get some work done and found it at the 1861 Inn. The room was cozy and had a private screen porch. I was able to sit out there with my laptop connected to WiFi and get tons of work done with zero interruption. The food was excellent and the hospitality of the Innkeepers made the stay that much more enjoyable.

5 on July 20, 2013
my husband and I stayed there 1 night, while passing through Cincinnati. Upon arriving, we got a tour of the house that included the history of it. Tom gave us directions for historic towns 10-20 minutes away, and recommendations for restaurants for dinner. Our room, Jenny's Retreat, had a lovely screened porch, which was nice for a relaxing read during a rain shower. We enjoyed meeting fellow travelers by the pool and hot tub at night. Breakfast was wonderful.

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in the Riverview room at the 1861 in Batavia OH, on June 8, 2013 while travelling south on I 75. It was a wonderful experience and a welcome respite from the frantic pace of the Interstate and the anonymity of the chain hotels. Carole and Tom have created an oasis of tranquility in this very beautiful historic home. Carole met us on arrival and showed us our perfect suite, with well appointed bathroom and decadent soaking tub and, had we been there on a colder evening, a cozy fireplace. But the comfort does not stop at your room, the principal rooms in this house are beautifully, furnished and lovingly maintained. As gardeners, my husband and enjoyed sitting with Carole on the front veranda, sipping a refreshing glass of wine, while viewing her lovely extensive gardens and catching a deer wandering through. I know the deer are the bane of any serious gardener but you have to admit they are picturesque! Breakfast the next morning was very pleasant and unhurried with good food and conversation with our fellow guests and Tom and Carole, when they had a few minutes between courses. Thank you Carole and Tom, we hope to visit again on our travels and will happily recommend the Inn to all our friends and those that read this review. Best regards, Barb and David Newmarket, ON

My husband and I needed a place to stay near Cincinnati on a recent road trip and discovered this B&B online. I'd recommend it heartily to anyone. The house has a wonderful history dating back to the Civil War and the owners have maintained the property's historic character. We stayed in a converted smokehouse and everything was top notch. The room was immaculately clean, they provided luxury toilletries, and the breakfast was amazing. Tom gave us a tour of the house and was so friendly and helpful. I wish we passed by Cincinnati more often just so we could stay here. You could never find a hotel with this kind of quality, character, and service for the amount we paid. Highly recommended!

My husband and I spent two nights in Jenny's retreat. We booking this bed and breakfast to spend time away relaxing and we wanted a pool and spa. We unfortunately had two days of nothing but rain so our desire to spend time by the pool was squashed. However the spa and the covered screened porch well made up for the rain. Carole and Tom are wonderful hosts and are very accommodating. Don't worry about needing lunch with Carole's cooked breakfast you will be full until late evening. Wonderful little treasure!

My husband and I spent our 11th Wedding Anniversary at the 1861 Inn, a gift from my daughter. We were pleasantly greeted by both Tom and Carole and made to feel like family coming home. We enjoyed the pool and was served Ice Tea that Carole went and brewed. We ate dinner elsewhere and when we returned back to our poolside cottage she had left a little frame that said Happy Anniversary as well as homemade brownies that were absolutely delicious. The cottage has it's own aviance to make you feel as though you are staying at a seaside cottage. They also stock the fridge with water and different types of soda and leave snaks for you. The breakfast the following morning was simply out of this world from the muffins and baked pears to the sausage, egg and potatoe quiche. We enjoyed hearing about the Inn's history with breakfast and it was such a peaceful and relaxing get away from all the hustle of life. We look forward to going back again in the future and would recommend this serene get away to our friends.

We were worried about having privacy and feeling comfortable, but Tom and Carole are such excellent hosts that we felt right at home! The property and house is beautiful and I wish we could have stayed more than one night. We stayed in Jenny's Retreat. Way better than you will get at a hotel. We hope to go back some time in the future!

Me and my husband of 13 years had a chance to get away and see our favorite band, Over the Rhine, perform on the grounds of their farm nearby. Our hosts, Tom & Carol, were familiar with OTR and even played their music for us during breakfast. We enjoyed Tom's singing with his friends in a Quartet of voices poolside. We would love to return and enjoy the relaxing country atmosphere should another OTR concert bring us back to Ohio!

We will return again and again, whether to celebrate or just to recharge our batteries.

My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The setting is peaceful and serene, and Tom and Carole were such welcoming hosts. The history of the Inn is interesting. The front porch swing was my favorite spot in the common areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The Riverview room was beautiful and breakfast was amazing. I highly recommend this B&B if staying in the Cincinnati area over a hotel chain. Easy to get to and a convenient location to downtown/area attractions.

I have stayed at several B & B's over the years. This one was over and above amazing. From the moment we got there Carol made us feel comfortable and welcome. Telling us about the house and the family and she showed us around was a treat. The Riverview room was beautiful with a king sized bed and two armchairs in front of the fireplace. My husband especially enjoying the steam shower. We appreciated cookbooklet they had on local restaurants and their recommendations The claw footed slippere tub was a treat with scented soaps, salts, and lotions. Coffee and tea service to our room in the morning-decadent! And I can't find words to describe breakfast. Yogurt with fresh fruit, current scones with an amazing apricot jelly, and stuffed French toast. From the lemon bars the night before to breakfast Carol and Tom remembered and made note of my husbands allergies to chocolate, mushrooms, and sausage. Our breakfast companions were delightful and we enjoyed talking to them and Carol and Tom. Our only regret is that we could not stay longer. As it was, I was not feeling well and Carol and Tom graciously agreed to a later check out. We will definitely be back to this lovely Inn. Stay here and you will be amazed at the outstanding service and genuine warmth you will experience.

My stereotype of a B&B is that they are for couples. I happened to be traveling solo the evening I stayed at the 1861 Inn. My stereotype was shattered with the welcome I received. Guess what? B&Bs are also for solo travelers! I was totally re-energized in just a few short hours.

We recently visited the Cincinnati area and happened upon The 1861 Inn on the internet. We stayed one evening in the Smoke House. It was somewhat small, but was masterfully decorated to give you a feeling of home comfort. The breakfast and welcoming conversation with the owners and a brief history of the home was quite nice. Even staying during the bleak months between winter and spring, the property was attractive and inviting. I can only imagine that the spring and summer will bring out even more beauty of the home and grounds. Only negative thing, I can mention is that even though, my husband and I have been married for many, many years, we were uncomfortable with the lack of privacy in the bathroom. Otherwise, great home, great service and entertaining hosts.

We had a wonderful time at the 1861 Inn! The room was lovely and very comfortable! The breakfasts were just fabulous and Tom and Carole (and the doggies) are wonderful hosts!! Plus it's closeness to downtown Cincinnati makes it a great get away location. We had a great time and plan to return at a later date and bring our bikes as the bike path is very near by.

We stayed at the 1861 Inn on our wedding night and came back for our 1 year anniversary! We were so impressed with their continued hospitality and kindness. There were added touches to the room welcoming us back and wishing us a happy anniversary, which was such a charming touch. Thus, the breakfast it always amazing and delicious!! Thanks for a wonderful stay; we hope to be back soon.

We chose the 1861 Inn from the website while looking for accommodations near the New England Club, where my aunt resides. It was the perfect choice! My mom and I shared one beautiful room with a steam shower, fireplace, and claw foot tub. My daughter and her friend shared the other lovely room across the landing with a door to the screened back porch. The house is beautiful, warm and inviting. Carole and Tom made us feel right at home. It was cold outside so we enjoyed time by the fireplace, loved the bedtime treat of delicious homemade brownies, and appreciated the snacks left out for us. We stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed more. The breakfasts were outstanding - my mom is still raving about the bread pudding/egg custard. There's a lot to see and do near the inn. Bike paths, old town Milford for unique shopping, Newport on the Levee for dining, shopping and an amazing view of the Cincinnati skyline. But if you didn't want to do a thing but enjoy the inn, this is the place to relax! Even the inn's 2 dogs were perfect angels and added joy to our visit. If you live miles from here or even close by, this is a great place to come and let yourself be pampered. We hope to be back and we live 520 miles away!

Coming all the way from Las Vegas, we needed a break from the speed of life and Tom and Carol provided the best getaway we have ever had. They were so delightful, loving and very accommodating. When we arrived, we knew right away that we were in for a treat. We stayed in the cottage the first night. It had a fireplace, was clean, cute, soaps and lotions everywhere, snacks and cookies in various places, and a bottle of wine was waiting for us with a very lovely note. The second night we stayed in the room with the attached porch, in the main house. The bed was so comfortable and the room was so spacious. My only regret is I forgot to fill out the guest book in the room with a thank you note. Homemade brownies were waiting for us when we returned at night and coffee for two was brought to our room 30 minutes before breakfast on a tray. Breakfast was the BEST....both days! Warmed fruit with cream, Italian Carrot Cake, poached pear with berries and yogurt, some sort of cake (a mix between a pecan roll and bread pudding)...so yummy!, sausage/potato/egg pie, beautifully set table with Easter decorations, juices.....so wonderful! They were both sweet and made us feel like we were at home. Such wonderful cooking and special...not the ordinary eggs and bacon. The two spaniels were cute and the tour + history was inspiring. I have traveled to many places for business and dragged my husband to many cities. This time we threw out the regular hotel room for the B & B experience. I have to say, thanks to Carol and Tom....there is no going back! No more regular hotels for us! Thanks for a fantastic stay and the shortest stay that was more relaxing than our week long vacations! I look forward to possibly returning when there are leaves. :) With love.....

Carole and Tom are extremely gracious and have provided amazing service for my husband and I both times we have stayed here! We have thoroughly enjoyed the service, nightly treats and wonderful breakfast each year we've been. We are looking forward to our next stay at the 1861 inn!

Had another amazing weekend at the 1861 Inn. Tom and Carol are the best. We were greeted at the door with hand shakes and a smile along with a glass of wine. Tom and Carol are the best Innkeepers we have experienced. The food was excellent and the personal touch that you put on the visit sets you above the rest. Casey was the sweetest dog coming up every morning to wake us up for coffee and breakfast. The riverview room is in a class by itself. Looking forward to our next visit. Possibly in the summer and spring season to enjoy the pool and hottub. We both got the rest and relaxation we were looking for as a getaway. Tom and Carol, you are the best! D & T from Indy

What we like about B&B's are the stories that go with the homes, the inn keepers we get to meet, and of course the food. Tom and Carole and The 1861 Inn met all those expectations with room to spare. The room had some nice touches (e.g. a steam shower) and lots of "period" furniture. My only regret is that I couldn't stop eating the wonderful breakfast so I have to hit the gym at least one more time than usual. A wonderful, relaxing, enjoyable stay.

We went there for the fireplaces on each room, and we will be returning for the wonderful service, the fantastic food, and the beautiful location. We felt pampered, relaxed and completely happy. We would recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone.

My husband and I wanted a quick getaway for our first anniversary. The 1861 Inn was a charming place with lots of character and history. We loved having the fireplace and tub in the room and the glass of wine with Tom was nice addition. The dogs were adorable and breakfast was amazing! Tom and Carole are wonderful hosts! We will definitely be back!

We stayed in the pool house room...very nice, but it got very cold at night and we didn't know how to turn up the heat. The shower was a single person stand up and fine but small. The food was awesome and the owners were very kind and accommodating to let us have our children stay with us there. They do have a cat and dogs in case of allergies, you should note this. I'd definitely stay there again and maybe try a room in the main house next time.

This place is wnderful. We stayed during the winter and loved the fireplace in the room. The bathroom tub was big and very comfortable. The scenery was soothing and the air outside was crisp and clean. Breakfast was delicious and we had a wonderful conversation with the owner. She is very gratuitous and hospitable towards her guests.

Of the many bed & breakfast inns we’ve stayed in throughout the country, our recent stay at the ‘1861 Inn’ in Ohio was no doubt, one of our most memorable and definitely worth returning to. Using the criteria of Place, Food and People, we found all 3 to be exceptional. The owners/inn keepers, Carole and Tom, have turned this beautiful historic home into a B&B with 3 of the most lovely, spacious guest rooms with a blend of cozy period and updated pieces to relax and enjoy throughout the house. Breakfast was superb—we stayed the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving and enjoyed a new and delicious breakfast each morning from baked treats and fruit to waffles, eggs, and local ham. Most special here, was spending time in fun, relaxing conversation with the owners and another guest sharing a bottle of wine and sipping tea in front of the warm fire in their comfy library. Wish we had added another day to simply enjoy reading and relaxing in each room of the house. Brilliant hosts and great guests too! The Stornos

I stayed in Jenny's Retreat for four nights while I visited Cincinnati. The hospitality showed by Tom and Carole helped me feel like a human being to be valued instead of a pocketbook to be opened. Coming "home" to a fire in the fireplace and conversation with intelligent people enriched the time I spent away from home. The memory of those days is a priceless addition to my life's story.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed our first visit to the 1861 Inn so much, that we recently returned for a longer stay in November. The Inn was everything we remembered it to be and more. The cottage provided the perfect amount of privacy while still allowing us the comforts of the main house ammenities. Carole outdoes herself every morning with a gourmet breakfast, and Tom is always there to assist you in any way. In no time, you feel less like a guest and more like family. The Inn is the perfect escape from the fast pace of life. We will certainly be returning to the Inn often.

My husband and I enjoyed our first visit to the 1861 Inn for a long weekend in October. We stayed in the beautiful Riverview suite. The accomodations, the grounds, the sumptous breakfasts, the hospitality were all top notch... to make for a memorable stay.

My husband and I came to the Inn for our 1 year wedding anniversary because we wanted a quaint, quiet, relaxing getaway and that's exactly what we got! The Inn was so lovely! We stayed in the room with the wood burning fireplace, claw bathtub, and stem shower. We didn't want to leave! Tom and Carole were such gracious hosts and made us feel right at home. There were even brownies left on our nightstand when we got back from dinner :) The breakfast in the morning was to die for! We can't wait to come back for pur next anniversary!

My husband and I stayed at the 1861 Inn in late October for four nights and enjoyed every moment of our stay! The Inn is beautiful, well appointed, comfortable and the hosts are warm and charming people. We stayed in the cottage, it had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The breakfast was better than at the Ritz Carlton! We highly recommend it and hope to make our way back!

Tom and Carole were wonderful hosts, and the Inn and surrounding property were beautiful! We had a wonderful time and would definitely stay here again if we are in the area.

Tom and Carole are excellent hosts and made us feel so welcomed and at home. My husband and I spent the night in the cottage out back which was perfect for us. It was private and cozy, and Tom and Carole added a few nice touches (like candles) to make it feel even more welcoming. The breakfast was home-made and fit for a king and was served to us by Tom himself (who waited on us hand and foot!), and then we enjoyed a lovely tour of the house (which included a lot of history!) and great conversation with Carole. Some places leave visitors feeling like a bit of a burden, but here we felt cared for and wanted. We hope to come back again sometime. Thanks, Tom and Carole!

You will want to stay longer than one night in the Riverview Room! The inn keepers are a joy with excellent taste in decor and food. I would highly recommend anyone interested in history and antiques to stay at this rural retreat that you will not likely forget. I am motivated to be as generous a hostess as they.

My mom gave us an Anniversary present staying at the 1861 Inn. We had never stayed in a bed & breakfast before so this was a real nice experience ! The room was called Jenny's Retreat and it was lovely with a screened in porch attached to it. We sat and enjoyed just being alone. The food was absolutely delicious and our hostesses Carole & Tom was wonderful (they always had goodies for us). Absolutely our best stay. We will try more Bed & Breakfast and would love to go back to the 1861 Inn!!!

Gourmet describes not only the breakfasts but also the detail of the historic preservation and the hospitality of the innkeepers. Top shelf ~ very best. We both grew up in Southwest Ohio and were delighted to find that such a wonderful inn exists right in our hometown. This is now our home-away-from-home. We so much enjoyed the beauty of the grounds, the shade trees on the lawn, the inground swimming pool, the relaxing warmth of the adjacent hot tub, and the delightful gourmet goodies awaiting us in our luxurious, comfy bedroom upon our return each evening. Carol & Tom went beyond our expectations to provide outstanding accommodations and extraordinary customer service. All 3 available rooms provide their own special ambience. The "pool house" is a cute cottage right next to the pool/hot tub. It has a summer cottage feel, complete with its own reading/sitting room. The upstairs bedroom we stayed in comes complete with sleigh bed, fireplace, and a bear claw white ceramic old fashioned soaking tub. The other upstairs bedroom has a comfy queen bed, a nostalgic bathroom with a ceiling style tank and European chain flush. It has a screened balcony porch that overlooks the pool area. Any room will provide its residents with a unique experience. Make your reservation today!

Our hosts were just fabulous in making our stay a most enjoyable one. Begining with a lovely glass of wine by the pool followed by a very nice rest in our comfy bed in our private cottage. We have never been served finer breakfasts in our many many years of extensive travel both in Canada, USA and Europe. Well Done.

I am writing this from the Riverview Room at the 1861 Inn, reluctant to give up this spot even though it's time to go. Just one day was not enough to enjoy all that Tom and Carole have to offer. The Inn is immaculate, the food is delicious and the hospitality beyond compare. My wife and I were in the area solely for business but now we have a reason to come back and fully explore.

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. It was the first time we've stayed at a B&B and it was very quiet and relaxing. I chose the smokehouse room for a little extra privacy and there were 2 things about it that I wish I'd known beforehand. First the shower is small. My husband commented "when it's hard for a skinny dude to turn around, you know it's small." Second the air conditioner is near the head of the bed, and while I'm a heavy sleeper and it didn't bother me, it kept my husband up. It was on his side and he's a lighter sleeper. I probably would have chosen a different room (esp in the summer when it's humid and you want the air conditioning) if I'd known that. With the exception of those two things, our stay was great overall. Tom and Carole were excellent hosts, setting up the hot tub for us in the evening and even making fabulous brownies for a late night snack. The house had a lot of charm, the area was quiet, private and peaceful, and the breakfast was delicious. The food was something I'd never be able to make (homemade scones, peaches and cream, and a delicious potato and sausage hash with eggs) so it was great to try something different for breakfast.

My husband, 1 year old son and I went for a weekend trip to the Cincinnati area. I always prefer to stay in bed and breakfasts, but this is the first time I have tried to manage with my son along for the ride! Tom and Carole were quite welcoming and loved our son. We felt so at home and rested! With the atmosphere and the rich history- the place was as close to perfect as possible! I would go back again and again! I will definitely be recommending the 1861 Inn to friends and family!

My husband and I spent our wedding night at the 1861 Inn and loved it so much that we decided to go back to celebrate our 1st anniversary. My husband will tell you I am PICKY when it comes to accommodations as I spent so much time in hotels traveling for my job... I prefer to only stay in bed and breakfasts when we travel. Like everyone else has mentioned, this place is the perfect mix of charm, hominess, and modern beauty...and so much character and attention to detail. The rooms are very tasteful and eclectic - no lace extravagance. It's the perfect b & b. We spent a day floating in the pool...went to dinner at a great restaurant in Old Loveland - Tano Bistro (20 Brix in Milford is also wonderful)... spent the night in a beautiful room... and had a truly gourmet breakfast - straight out of Bon Appetit! A very romantic setting - the house is set back in the woods with a long driveway... a big, beautiful front porch with a swing, a sparkling pool and jacuzzi, trees and lovely plants all around...italian party lights hanging on back patio... it's such a romantic setting - it's hard to believe we were only 30 minutes from our house! Carole and Tom are excellent hosts with so much to share. They generously welcome their guests, open their home, and take time to show them around and offer as much about the history of the house as people would like to hear. Another lovely touch - when we returned from dinner at 10:30pm - there was a small bottle of wine, two wine classes, and gourmet chocolate zucchini bread on our dresser! The 1861 Inn is right out of a storybook. Tom and Carole also let us choose when we wanted to have breakfast and gave us plenty of space and privacy.

For my wife's 30th birthday I wanted to surprise her with a nice night away. She has always wanted to visit a bed and breakfast. Our stay at the 1861 Inn far exceeded our expectations for a relaxing time away from home. Our room was prepared just for us, with a birthday sign next to the bed and the most delicious homemade chocolate covered strawberries we've ever had. The pools were delightful and having a private screened in porch with a staircase right to the pool was fantastic. I can go on and on about our stay. The highlight was the breakfast in the morning! I've never had a better home-cooked breakfast (sorry Mom!) We will be back!

We spent the weekend with two other couples and had a wonderful time! On Friday night we went to the Harmony Hill Winery and enjoyed the wine and meeting the owner. Saturday was a wonderfully relaxing day by the pool. The Inn is a wonderful combination of historic beauty and charm and modern conveniences. Tom and Carole are gracious hosts and the breakfasts were some of the best we've had at any B&B.

2 of us had a wonderful stay for 6 nights, enjoying the huge pool and the air conditioned house to escape the 100+ degree days, when we weren't visiting family in the area. The house is grand and the bedrooms roomy and comfy. Wi-Fi was appreciated, and we're hoping that Carole gets a cookbook printed of her spectacular 2-course breakfasts. We were in awe. Best coffee in Clermont County, too! Carole & Tom were gracious and welcoming hosts, and we look forward to visiting another time.

From arrival to departure just a true gem to stay at while in the area. Accommodated dietary and schedule needs, arranged in room massages for us and the entire time a very professionally managed Inn. We booked all three rooms and when we left felt like we were leaving a friends home. If in the area this is one oasis you need to visit.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights after our wedding. They stayed up for us and made sure we got settled in when we arrived very late and made sure to set up meal times that would accommodate us and all their guests! Very quiet and secluded, just the thing to unwind after the hustle and bustle of wedding planning and execution!

If you are visiting Cincinnati, you should consider staying here. You would enjoy comfortable hospitality, delicious food (including hot fruit!), two friendly dogs, and a delightful, quiet atmosphere. The 1861 Inn is everything you would want in a bed-and-breakfast, and in addition your host and hostess are real friends.

We stayed only one night and didn't have a lot of time to explore the Inn since we were visiting some family in Cincinnati, but we were glad we made the drive out of town. 1861 Inn is a quiet and comfortable retreat and the breakfast was outstanding. If we ever have the chance to visit again, there appears to be quite a bit of history to explore right there on the grounds. Tom was pleasant and accommodating, very helpful in giving us tips for scenic driving routes, etc.

Cheryl and I,Jim,were very impressed by the hospitality we received from Tom and Carol. it felt like going to our family home. The layout of our room was perfect for an anniversary getaway. The claw-foot bathtub with shower head was an unexpected luxury. The bed was so soft and spacious with plenty of pillows for lounging. The overall decor was very classic to the period and left us in awe when we opened our door for the first time. The tranquility at the inn so close to civilization was a welcome respite from a very hectic few weeks at home for us. After we put our luggage in our room we spent an hour in the front porch swing before retiring for the night. The breakfast was especially tasty with lots of variety and generous portions of wonderful blueberry pancakes , bacon. We loved the fruit and nuts with yogurt and ample supply of coffee, juices and milk. I was full until our evening meal at home. Thanks for a great escape from the fast pace of our life.

Jackie and I were looking for a place to get away for a couple of days. We found it! The room we stayed in on the second floor had a screened in porch that overlooked the back yard and pool. It was great to sit out there and read or just sit. They showed us one of the other rooms that had a fireplace that would have also been a cozy place to stay. The breakfasts were excellent...something different every day and hearty...the coffee was delicious! We had one of the dinners...Flat Iron Steak. The steak was grilled to perfection and the vegetables...green beans....were some of the best I have had. Best of all were Tom and Carole...perfect hosts,,,warm and friendly and great company... I would recommend 1861 to anyone...and we will be back.

We have stayed in B+B's all over the country, but this was our best experience so far. The Inn was spotlessly clean, the breakfast was excellent, and the grounds were beautiful. Innkeepers Carole and Tom were warm and down to earth. They have two friendly dogs who are fun to be around. We are looking forward to staying there again in warmer weather so we can try out their outdoor activities. This was a first rate experience.

1861 Inn is a beautiful civil war era home with wonderfully gracious and kind hosts! My room had a claw-foot tub, a full shower, and a wood-burning fireplace, and it was wonderfully light and airy, as well. I haven't had such a relaxing getaway in years, and with gourmet breakfasts each morning (so delicious all the guests wanted copies of the recipes), I didn't want to leave! I'm definitely going back - maybe later in the summer when the pool is open!

Beautiful, cozy, peaceful and relaxing. Breakfast was a gourmet delight! I was sad when it was time to leave. Can't wait to return! Carole and Tom are the consummate hosts.

To these two veteran world travelers, always on the lookout for the memorable visit, the 1861 Inn would have been an interesting and pleasant place to visit in its own right; however, the hospitality and attentiveness of Tom & Carole elevated this to an exceptional experience. For example, who would have thought that we would come to Batavia, Ohio for one the finest dining experiences in recent memory. I strongly urge visitors to coordinate their stay, if possible, with the Cottrills and splurge on a special dinner created by Carole, in addition to the delicious and sumptuous breakfast included. Tom's suggestions were very helpful in making the most of our stay, and enjoying the local area. Our hosts were both wonderfully attentive to our needs and preferences, creating a comfortable 'at home' feeling. Tom is eager to share the history of the Inn, and gives an interesting tour of the home. We stayed in the detached Cottage, the former smokehouse. It was charming and comfortable, and offers private access from the main house. We spent a cozy evening in our cottage by the fire after a convivial evening of dining and conversation with both our hosts and the other guests. We are looking forward to future visits - like all great hosts Tom & Carole have the ability to make their guests feel at ease and at home.

A warm welcome and a historical tour were provided by Carole on arrival. We were impressed at the knowledge and care put into the Inn. Tom & Carole taught us a new card game and we had so much fun with them that we skipped going anywhere and just stayed at the inn for the entire evening! Breakfast was incredibly delicious and we really felt pampered. We went with our friends and decided to go back in the summer to enjoy the view, pool and hot tub. Such an incredible experience and less than 2 hours from home right here in Ohio! Thank you so much Tom & Carole! We highly recommend this for a great getaway and wonderful hospitality!

Tom and Carol are wonderful hosts that make sure you have what you need, without stepping on your privacy. The rooms are nicely decorated, and the food is amazing. Cozying up by the fire in the library makes for a beautiful startof slowing down for a relaxing weekend away. I'm sure this won't be our lastrealaxing time away at the 1861 Inn in Batavia , Ohio.

It was a dark and rainy night when we arrived; Tom came out to greet us with an umbrella. An interesting history of the house by Carol and a hot cup of tea shook off all the tensions of the day. The Riverview room with the sparkle of the fireplace and my husband soaking in the claw foot tub... life is good at the inn.

My wife and stayed to celebrate our 5th Anniversary and had a wonderful weekend! The night before we were to go, our son was up all night long sick and it looked like we weren't going to be able to make it, so I called to cancel. Later that morning, he was feeling better and my mother in law offered to keep him so we could still go. I called Tom back to see if it was too late and they graciously accommodated us. The house was beautiful, I told my wife to take pictures because it was the sort of house I'd like to live in one day! We stayed in the guest cottage, which was just wonderful. We enjoyed a leisurely afternoon, strolling on the grounds and relaxing around the house reading. Then we ate dinner at the Inn (that's an option, be sure to take advantage of it!) with Tom and Carole and another guest couple. Butternut squash soup, salad greens with roasted pears, steak with mushroom sauce, roasted potatoes, brussel sprouts, and a delicious pie for dessert! The food was easily the quality of a fancy restaurant, but with seconds! I normally don't like brussel sprouts, but I not only ate them, I had seconds! After dinner, we all sat around a fire outside and Tom told us stories about the history of the Inn and Batavia. The bed was incredibly comfortable and we enjoyed a nice night's sleep. Breakfast was another incredible meal, pineapple in yogurt, fresh baked muffins, and belgian waffles! The Inn is only about 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, but you feel like you're out in the woods, secluded. Tom and Carole have 2 adorable dogs, a cocker spaniel and a springer spaniel. If you love dogs, you'll love these two! All in all, a wonderful experience. They even gave us a coupon for our next stay, which we definitely be using!

We just got back home from a nice visit to the Cincinnati area. We decided to stay at the 1861 Inn because of all the great reviews and we were not disappointed. I wish we would have had more time to relax at the Inn. The breakfasts were outstanding! The hosts were knowledgeable and very accommodating (They even turned the hot tub on so we could relax in it after a late dinner). The two dogs were well behaved and fun to be around. We stayed in the Guest Cottage which is separate from the house. The room was well maintained and clean. I would definitely recommend the Inn if you are looking for a great B and B!

Our stay at the 1861 Inn was brief but very enjoyable. The hosts went out of their way to make the visit pleasurable. We were treated to cool refreshing drinks shortly after arrival and nice warm brownies before turning in at night. The breakfasts were delicious and quite filling. The hosts helped us navigate our way around the surrounding community by recommending eating establishments and areas of interest. I highly recommend this B & B for anyone needing a time to get away and relax. Dennis & Judy Gilmore

My wife and I needed to get away for a few days and the 1861 Inn was a great choice. Carole and Tom were as charming as the Inn. Our room was extremely comfortable and the pool was amazing.

Our stay was wonderful. The bed was so comfy, there were many places to relax besides in the house: the large front porch, the pool side chairs, and our room had a screened porch where we read and relaxed. The pool was perfect after a day of bicycle riding in Milford or hiking in East Fork park. And only 12 miles from the winery where the music and wine were excellent. Thanks Carole & Tom, for sharing your beautiful home.

what a great place to stay! tom & carole were such great hostesses, they made us feel welcome and even gave us a packed breakfast at 6:30 am so we wouldn't be late for the class we were taking. The room we stayed in was very nice and comfortable. Im so glad we found this bed and breakfast and next time we are in Cincinnati area we will be sure to stay again!

Tom and Carole are outstanding hosts and have created a magical oasis in the middle of a busy area. It is not often that one can stay and enjoy a fully restored (and modernized) historical property in such comfort while at the same time thinking that you are looking at and experiencing what life might have been like 100 years ago. We not only had breakfast but also supper at the Inn and would highly recommend it to everyone. Carole and Tom are chefs par excellence and great company at the same time.

Carole and Tom make an art of welcoming their guests. We felt very much "at home" from the moment we arrived. Even the animals are welcoming! We loved the dinner Carole prepared and enjoyed the company of other guests (including a New York Met Opera star.)

The Inn was a wonderful place to spend an evening. We found both charm and relaxation there. The room was both charming and relaxing. We so enjoyed our conversations with Carole and Tom. They shared so much about the history of this charming house. Breakfast was very good and there was plently of it!!

We were greeted by Tom and Carol and was given a tour and history of the house and grounds. The house is beautifully decorated and the attention to detail is amazing. Our room was beautiful and we were delighted with the "Sweet Dreams" snack on our night stand when we got back from dinner. The breakfast was out of this world! We would definitely recommend this B&B and would go back again if we had the opportunity.

There are many upscale, first-class, well-run B&Bs in grand historic homes, and the 1861 Inn is one of them. But here is what really distinguishes this Inn: the innkeepers, Carole & Tom. They are genuine "people people," totally invested in making your stay flawless. They don't "hover"; instead they are down-to-Earth, very sociable, knowledgable, good-humored, and they enjoy getting to know you & will talk about anything. A nice option: sign on for Carole's excellent dinners (best salmon I ever enjoyed), and ask them to dine with you. For us, each dinner was a 3-hour affair b/c we lingered and talked--they are that interesting. They also have 2 dogs who are part of the family, adding to the fun (they'll pen the pups for those who aren't comfortable around dogs). Bottom line: the 1861 Inn is first-class in all respects, and we've already reserved our next stay! --Fred & Jeanne Schroyer

My husband and I had a wonderful relaxing weekend at the 1861 Inn. There is plenty to do in nearby Cincinnati but we enjoyed hanging out on the screened in porch, swinging on the porch swing, and walking around the property. Carole is an amazing chef and both Carole and Tom made us feel completely at home and went out of their way to help us in any way. We definitely want to visit again and would highly recommend this bed and breakfast!

Carole & Tom are gracious hosts who readily accommodated our dietary preferences and also recommended good places for evening dining in nearby Milford. Adding to our enjoyment were their two friendly but not intrusive dogs. Carole's training in culinary arts was evident. Suggestion for those driving to the 1861 from I-275: If you expect to arrive after 3 p.m. on a business day consider using the exit north of the Highway 32 exit in order to avoid bumper-to-bumper traffic near the Eastgate shopping area. You may drive a few extra miles but at least you should keep moving.

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage with a wood-burning fireplace. Carol made a delicious breakfast and showed us the house and talked about the history of it as well. Tom and Carol are both very friendly and greeted us as if we were their good friends. We wish we could have stayed longer.

In need of some much needed R & R recently and got just that at 1861 Inn. My stay could not have been better. The property was just beautiful and the Innkeepers, Tom and Carole, were so welcoming :) Stayed in 2 of the rooms during my recent visit, both of which were outstanding. Food was fabulous!! I will definitely be vistiting the 1861 Inn again, hopefully very soon :)

I and a couple of friends are hiking around the state of Ohio, When we made our way to Batavia and found Tom and Carole of whom own and mantain the 1861 inn. I must say, this place is what America once was and what we would love to have back. Everything from the slam of the screen door, the wooden planks on the porch, to the comfortable silence the home offers. My favorite part was rocking on the back porch all nite with friends.

We had a wonderful time at the 1861 Inn. Carole was very polite and made a wonderful meal in the morning. The conversation was great. I would encourage anyone to stay there. I am sure we will go back at some point as well.

We stayed in the Riverview room. It was wonderful and relaxing. The fireplace is woodburning - simply light one of the 4-hour logs provided and enjoy an entire evening of a real, crackling fire. My husband loved the steam shower. The only disappointment was the bathtub - due to its shape, it wasn't exactly comfortable. The breakfast was amazing and the property was beautiful. I probably could have spent half the day just sitting on the porch swing and admiring the surroundings. I would definitely recommend it.

We just completed our second stay at the 1861 Inn and it was just as wonderful as the first! We live locally, but don't feel the need to travel any farther than Batavia for the best B&B stay that there is! The rooms are just beautiful and always clean and comfortable. We love the company of Tom and Carole and their sweet dogs, Toga and Casey. The food is delicious and leaves you very satisfied. We feel very lucky that we only have a 25 minute drive to get to our "home away from home". Thanks, Tom and Carole, for making our stay so memorable!

My husband and I were in the midst of planning a huge wedding for December 31st but decided we couldn't wait any longer. With just our families, we got married the day before Thanksgiving in the courthouse and then headed to the 1861 inn for a private honeymoon. We were keeping it a secret from all our guests for the next month, but with Tom and Carole we just burst out with the news! They shared our excitement, brought champagne to the pool house and looked at our pictures. A day after our new years eve wedding we headed back to the inn. Carole and Tom offered wine, handmade caramel from a friend, and amazing conversation. Even though I'm pretty allergic to animals and they adore them and have three, we think this will always be our stopping point when we visit Cincinnati/experience happy things we want to share with our new friends. The pool house is extremely private and comfortable, and breakfast both times was delicious. I would definitely recommend staying here.

We stayed in Jenny's room at the 1861 Inn on November 5, 2010. It's at the top of this beautiful, well cared for Victorian home. Though not a large room, it's cozy and beautifully decorated. It has a screened-in porch attached that overlooks the pool. We were greeted joyfully in the morning by the two resident dogs and the coffee outside our door was wonderful pampering. Breakfast was great and we enjoyed talking to Carole and Tom, the owners. Carole gave us some great ideas for exploring the area. Our only regret was that it wasn't summer so we couldn't enjoy the porch and pool! We'll just have to come back next year in the summertime! We like to stay in B&Bs whenever possible and we'd recommend this one to everyone.

The home and rooms were lovely and the breakfast was tasty. There's a library that's a pleasant reading spot and in which the hosts have an old photo album filled with vintage pics (from the early-mid 20th century) of the home, its residents and their friends and family. They've decorated and renovated in such a way that modern amenities are available but the historic feel of the home predominates. The hosts' hospitality tops even those wonderful features. We were very late getting in the night of our arrival, yet Tom was there to greet us and even set the dinner table so we could eat our take-out food in the dining room, then sat with us and told us stories about the home and property. The next morning, Carole joined us after breakfast and entertained us with stories about the community and what she enjoys about running a B&B. Our visit was truly enjoyable and relaxing.

Great establishment, centrally located near Cincinatti. Our hosts Tom and Carole were a true delight. We stayed in the very quaint poolhouse to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. They provided all of the extra touches to make it better than we could have imagined. The food was excellent, the company great, and attention to detail outstanding! What a well run establishment by two very genuine nice people. And i have to mention how cute the dogs are! We cannot wait to return again...so much to do in the area and so little time. Thankyou Tom and Carole for a fantastic weekend. Jennifer and Ritchie ,Fall 2010

Tom and Carole have a beautiful thing going here. The house was built around 1860 and they have kept it in fantastic shape. Although we didn't see the cottage by the pool, you'll want to stay in both guest rooms in the house at the same time because they're so elegantly and creatively decorated. We stayed in the room called "Jenny's Retreat, which features a very comfortable bed, a bathroom built rather cleverly into a closet, and the original hardwood floors dating back about 150 years. Being surprised with a plate of brownies was a nice touch, as is the morning tray of coffee and juice with a newspaper. The in-ground hot tub was very cozy and just the right temperature. However, the best part of the stay was the breakfast. Don't remember what it was called but Carole cooked up something like a bread pudding topped with roasted peaches, and I recommend this tasty dish to anyone. Also, take Tom's advice and have dinner at an Italian restaurant in nearby Milford called "Padrino". Simply the best Italian food I've ever eaten. Everyone should take a night or two with a loved one and be guests at the 1861 Inn. It was a very pleasant experience and my wife and I will certainly return one day.

Over the years, my husband and I have stayed at several lovely B&B's. The 1861 Inn is one of the very best and an unexpected gem tucked away in a charming neighborhood. The home is immaculate, the beds extremely comfortable, the atmosphere romantic, and the food incredible. We even had our own second story screened in porch attached to our room that overlooked the beautifully manicured back yard and inground pool and hottub. The innkeepers, Tom and Carole, were our favorite part of the stay. After only 1 night, the 1861 Inn felt like home!

We were procrastinators about planning the details of our 10th anniversary escape. Once we started hunting for B&B's, southern Ohio seemed just far enough away from the real world. Having looked thru several sites with dozens of locations, this one was the first to make us both stop. From the website we loved that it was a period house, but still affordable. Carole & Tom were absolutely have created an oasis. They were welcoming and accommodating and thought of lots of details. Their dogs are excellent greeters. We stayed in the guest house, which almost felt like an escape the the coast. Food was lovely and plentiful. We will absolutely return and stay in other rooms as well. We have also sent along links to a lot of friends and family. We absolutely feel that the value of this stay exceeds the pricetag. Thank, you, thank you. Tim & Alanna, Kentucky

We were looking for a B&B close to Cincy that was relaxing and enjoyable. We definitely found it! We had a great time getting to know the owners, walking the grounds, and relaxing in our room. The breakfast was more than enough and very delicious. They did a GREAT job making our stay more special since we were celebrating a birthday. They made us special notes, cupcakes, and a requested breakfast. We loved our stay soooo much that we actually drove home and booked for a stay for a month later when we would be in the area again!

Our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast was definitely one we will always remember. We got married the night before and were looking for a place to relax and get away for a night. Tom and Carole were great hosts and made us feel right at home. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub in the afternoon. They have two very friendly dogs that we played with as well. We had a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant that Tom recommended and when we came back they had champagne on ice in our room. Breakfast was fantastic as well. We will definitely be back!

My husband and I wanted to celebrate his birthday by attending a Reds game. Because we didn't live in Cincinnati, we were in search of a hotel when we came across the 1861 Inn. In the end, we were very happy about choosing the bed & breakfast option. The Innkeepers were extremely friendly and welcoming. The cottage room was the perfect private overnight stay, which was what we needed! Thank you.

Our stay was a great way to slow down and celebrate our anniversary in comfort! Some of the highlights: the iced tea tray delivered to our room on arrival, the secluded pool area, the amazing breakfasts, and the kindness of our hosts! Some tips: splurge on the wine/cheese tray...totally worth it, sitting by the pool! Visit nearby Milford for fine dining and cupcakes at Sugar. Sit on the porch and enjoy an afternoon rainstorm. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.

We wanted a quiet place to celebrate our anniversary. I was looking for a place with a pool and found the perfect place. We stayed in the cottage with the pool right outside our door. After we arrived we swam in the pool. We went to Milford for supper and when we got back we swam again and relaxed in the hot tub. Tom brought drinks and brownies right to the poolside for us to enjoy. After the nice breakfast we swam again. Thanks Carol & Tom for your great hospitality! We hope to repeat this experience on our next anniversary or sooner.

I'm almost reluctant to write this review because we'd love to keep this wonderful little inn a secret all to ourselves! We stayed for one night on August 7, 2010 in the "Jenny's Retreat" room. Upon arrival, Carole gave us the tour accompanied by Toga and Casey, their gorgeous, friendly spaniels. We had the place to ourselves that night and after some time by the pool, and tossing balls for Toga to fetch, we headed to dinner in nearby Milford to a great restaurant recommended by Carole. Later that evening we relaxed on the screened-in porch adjacent to our room - a perfect setting. Carole surprised us with yummy brownies in our room and we didn't even have to ask for a wine opener for the bottle she knew we had brought with us, it was waiting in our room when returned from dinner. Breakfast was phenomenal and served poolside on a spectacular summer morning. Carole and Tom were both so gracious and welcoming. We loved our stay and only wish it could have been longer. We'll definitely be back!

I stayed at the 1861 Inn for two days and two nights. I'd found it by looking for hotels and other accommodations online, and was immediately taken by the beauty of the place and the very reasonable rates--lower than most of the other places I'd looked at in the Cincinnati/Newport area. I stayed in the Guest House, which was very cozy and comfortable for me and my girlfriend. The pool (which is larger than it appeared to be in the photos) was a few steps outside of our door, and we enjoyed using it. At night the air conditioner kept us cool and comfortable. During the day when we went out it was only a short drive down the nearby highway to get to Newport/Cincinnati. All of that would have made our stay at 1861 Inn excellent, but that's not even the best part. What made this a perfect weekend was the fact that the innkeepers, Carole and Tom, are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. They will make you feel like you are staying with two of your best friends . . . people who know you and like you and who look forward to taking care of you. Actually, even that doesn't go far enough. I left the 1861 Inn feeling that I had just made two wonderful new friends, and I am going to be looking for a reason to go back to Batavia again to stay with them.

My husband and I stayed at the INN on July 28th 2010 for our 30th anniversary. The experience was pleasant from the moment we arrived and was greeted by their dogs, KC and Toga, to the time we checked out. Upon arrival, Tom gave us a tour and the history of the house and answered any questions we had. Both Tom and Carole were very gracious, warm and welcoming. We had a very nice dip in the outdoor pool and relaxed on the patio that is landscaped with colorful wildflowers and foliage. We stayed in Jenny's Room which was warm and cozy. We so enjoyed the covered porch that is very private and decorated nicely. Each room is decorated so beautifully in their home. The library is stocked with plenty of reading material. We enjoyed having a TV in our room and the “sweet dreams” snack that they brought to our room in the evening. The beds are wonderful and so very comfortable. Morning coffee and newspaper was bought to our room before breakfast which we enjoyed on the screened porch. And what a breadfast, it was very unique, delicious and bountiful. We felt pampered our whole stay and will for sure go back again and again and have already told our friends about the 1861 INN. An awesome experience. Neal and Theresa/Ohio

This is the perfect place to stay, if you have kids rowing at Harsha lake! Carol and Tom made me feel extremely welcome, the food was amazing, and it was a beautiful quiet place to rest and relax, unlike the hotels where all the kids were staying for Nationals. Being from Seattle, the pool was a real treat to help me cool down from the heat and humidity. I stayed in the riveside room, and it was gorgeous! Lots of space and even movies to watch while waiting for a storm to pass. I also enjoyed the chance to meet other rowing parents....this would be a great place for friends to stay as a group during a regatta!

Our visit to 1861 Inn was a reunion of friends from four states. Their location is easy to get to and Cincinnatti has many interesting neighborhoods to explore during the day. The Inn has lots of places to linger with friends - especially the front living room when the evening sun in coming through the windows. The dining room with the magnolia wall paper is a cheery way to start the day gathered around the dining table over coffee / tea / and a great breakfast prepared by the inn keeper. Even special dietary needs are accomodated with ease. We will definitely stay at 1861 Inn in the future.

This was our third stay at 1861 Inn. Our previous visits were solo stays and the Inn provided us with a wonderfully quiet, relaxed get away trip. This time, we were joined by several friends from different locations. We met at the Inn to celebrate two birthdays. As good as the Inn was for our solo trips, it was even better for a weekend with friends. It was like having those friends visit us at our own home. The atmosphere was perfect and the event was truely special. We shared old times, great meals (thanks Carol), and wonderful suggestions for day trips (thanks Carol & Tom). The 1861 Inn is a great place to stay if you want to just relax. But, it's location also makes it a great location if you are in Cincinnati to enjoy downtown and the river area - so convenient. We'll stay there anytime we are in the Cinncy area. It's wonderful.

We thouroughly enjoyed our short (one night) stay at the 1861 Inn. Carole and Tom are the perfect innkeepers -- accomodating, informative, friendly, but not intrusive. There were carrot cake cupcakes waiting for us when we returned from a walk around Batavia and East Fork State Park, and breakfast was creative and delicious! If we return in the summer, we'll book the room with the sitting porch that overlooks the pool, or maybe even the "smokehouse" private guest room!

If you want to be catered to, this is the place to go. The fresh aroma of coffee being left in front of our room door and the pleasant taste of the pumpkin waffles were surprisingly not the highlight of our trip. The Inn Keepers, Tom and Carol were absolute wonderful host(s) and made our stay in their home a pleasurable experience. We were not treated as guest, we were treated as long time friends. We look forward to visiting their home again to enjoy the warm conversations and pumpkin waffles with whip cream.

My recent stay at the 1861 Inn was my first "B & B experience." Maybe it was beginner's luck, but I was enchanted with all aspects of my visit! The house is lovely, the hosts welcoming and convivial, and the food...divine! My next trip to Cincinnati will definitely include a B & B -- but only if there's room at the (1861) Inn!

We recently spent a few days at the 1861 Inn and had an absolutely outstanding time. Everything was superb-the room, the food, the atmosphere. It was very peaceful and relaxing, although very close to Cincinnati. Tom and Carole are wonderful people and have gone to great lengths to make their guests feel at home. We will be back, especially to see Toga and Casey (the spaniels)!

Our 3-night stay was simply delightful! 1861 Inn is a beautiful place to stay with a very relaxing atmosphere. Tom and Carole are charming hosts who made sure we had every comfort; and, they are especially knowledgeable about what you might like to see and do in the Cincinnati area. The historic house is set back on several shaded and very private acres. The Inn is beautifully decorated, lovingly cared for, and inviting. Carole, whose cooking is consistently delicious, beautiful, & imaginative, delighted us with a special breakfast each morning. We stayed in the attractively appointed poolside bungalow, where Tom and Carole had provided everything we might need. The little refrigerator, stocked with beverages, in our cozy sitting/reading room, was a welcome surprise. My wife and I took much pleasure relaxing in the pool and the hot tub as well as chatting with other guests at the Inn. Thank you, Tom and Carole! 1861 Inn is the best B&B in the area, and we are eager to return!

This was one of the most relaxing, enjoyable weekend getaways my husband and I have had. The Inn is wonderful, full of history that Tom and Carole enjoying sharing. They are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to see that your every need is met. Coffee, juice and the moring paper were outside our door each morning. The breakfasts are a gourmet treat. We enjoyed a beautiful room with private screened in porch overlooking the pool and woods.

What a lovely experience! My stay at the 1861 Inn was enjoyable on so many levels... The house, exquisitely set on several wooded acres, is a beautifully restored architectural gem! The hosts are welcoming and convivial...proud of their lovely home and pleased to share it. And the food - simply delightful! It will rate "Four Stars" in anyone's book. Any complaints? Yes, I would like to have stayed longer. Am looking forward to my next visit. Dee September 4, 2009

The home is warm and inviting and the innkeepers gracious, caring about my every comfort. I loved the private screened in porch attached to my room, a place to sit and read but still enjoy the outside. The pool was refreshing. The breakfasts were gourmet and delicious. I loved that they brought me coffee in the morning half an hour before breakfast to drink as I woke up and got ready. I look forward to enjoying another rest and retreat here in the future.

We really enjoyed our stay at the 1861 Inn this summer. Jenny's Retreat was so nice with the enclosed porch overlooking the pool. We enjoyed the beautiful home and grounds, the delicious food and quiet surroundings. It was the little touches that impressed me; coffee and juice waiting outside our door in the morning, the refrigerator stocked with water and soda, and the always-full jar of M&Ms! What more could you ask for? Thanks again Carole and Tom for the wonderful food and hospitality. Jennifer and Olga W., Chicago, IL

This is a great place to get away with your special someone. My wife and I had a great time and enjoyed our stay with Carole, Tom, KC and Toga. Toga will be your best friend as long as you play ball with him at the pool and KC will welcome you back to the Inn everytime. Thanks again for the great time, Bill and Stephanie

The environment is everything you could ever wish for in a B&B; wonderful rooms, cottage, lovely gardens, seclusion, pool, hot tub, fabulous meals, homey but elegant community rooms, etc; a retreat spot unto itself. However, it is the hosts that put the experience over the top; amiable, kind, considerate, thoughtful, gracious.

Carol and Tom truly made our stay wonderful. From the gourmet breakfast, wealth of information, beautiful cottage, massage by the pool, hot tub, to greeting us at 11pm. We could not have asked for more gracious hosts. We look forward to returning someday.

We stayed here for the week before our son's wedding in Cincinnati. Coming from England we're very familiar with b-and-b's, good and bad, and this was one of the best we've experienced. We couldn't have hoped for a friendlier welcome, rooms with more character or better breakfasts. Carole & Tom went out of their way to contribute to our sense of occasion, and even helped out in a transport crisis. We would recommend the Inn without hesitation.

The Batavia Inn was so convenient to the regattas at Harsha Lake and to downtown Cincinnati. It was a little oasis at the end of a long, hot day. The room was beautiful, the bed extremely comfortable, and the breakfasts delicious. Carole and Tom could not have been more gracious or accomodating!

and we weren't quite sure what to expect. But, we could not have been happier. The house and setting were lovely, beautifully and tastefully restored. The room was gorgeous and comfortable...ummm, that feather bed was sumptuous, a cozy fireplace, tub, modern bath...all perfect. Tom and Carole could not have been more gracious and cordial. Meeting them and their canine friends was half the fun! And I almost forgot, the breakfast was fantastic! This was a delightful experience I wouldn't hesitate to recommend!

We enjoyed our stay at the lovely 1861 Inn. The innkeepers were friendly and informative and were happy to share some of the Inn's history with us over a glass of wine as we sat around the fire. We loved that the room had its own private fireplace. The highlight for us was the coffee tray and newspaper waiting outside our door in the morning! The only downside was the lack of a tub for two...but I thoroughly enjoyed my hot soak in the beautiful clawfoot slipper tub. We'll definitely return, perhaps in summer, to enjoy the pool!

My daughter and I stayed at the 1861 Inn on two separate occassions and found it to be our favorite B&B so far. The rooms were immaculate, the fire, steam shower and deep tub wonderfully relaxing, food outstanding and most of all, the hospitality was warm and delightful. We look forward to returning soon.
