The inn is beautifully situated at the confluence of the plains and the mountains on the original Santa Fe Trail. It is remote, with wildlife all around. The interior is well-appointed with western art, pottery, and statues. Rooms are spacious, well-decorated, and comfortable. The common areas are welcoming and abundant. The setting took my breath away.

Location, location, location. What a gem in the Sangre De Cristo mountains. The Adobe building is fabulous. This B&B feels like a home. The views of the Tooth of Time and the surrounding mesas are breath taking. The wldlife is abundant. Cimarron is 6 miles away for some "Old West" exploration. Allison is an outstanding host who can cook an award-winning breakfast. Snacks and sodas are available 24/7. The library/study is a very comfortable rooms for relaxing. The living room is also a great area for conversation and chilling. A fireplace is availableasy in this room. The bed rooms very comfortable. What a wonderful location to recharge the batteries. Don't miss the Cimarron Canyon drive.

The Casa is truly one of a kind. So unique, beautiful, and surrounded by mountains and wildlife. How we loved saying good night to the owls, and good morning to the deer, right outside our door! Not sure how they did it, but the temperature in every room was perfect! The best sleep I've had in I don't know how long. Felt nice to wake up refreshed, relaxed, ready to explore. Thank you Allison, for going above and beyond to ensure us the full experience. Amazing food and service too!

Casa del Gavilan is a step back into the time of early twentieth century western ranch estates. It is rustic, yet comfortable; offers quietude, but is not too isolated; and most importantly it allows you the opportunity to consider life and listen to others in a way we rarely do in our all-too-fast-moving and noisy world. The trail around the property offers fantastic overviews of the area and should not be missed. Allison was a wonderful host.

This is such an outstanding historic property near Philmont Scout Ranch & Villa Philmonte- a peaceful retreat. Breakfasts were outstanding each of the 3 mornings we were there. The separate guest kitchen for snacks was such a nice touch. Allison was very accommodating in allowing our Philmont kids to join us for breakfast- with advance notice & a nominal fee. All was outstanding!! J & G of California

Beautiful surroundings in a quiet, peaceful area. If you want loud night life outside your door and police sirens, go somewhere else. You can have a full bar experience at the old St. James hotel 6 miles north. Here you get solitude and 225 acres of mountain area to hike and relax. Breakfast was included and was wonderful. The hostess was exceptional, and we've stayed in a lot of B&Bs, so we've seen it all. We will definitely stay again.

We have been long time visitors to the Casa. Each room is unique, we are happy to stay in any of them. The den and study are great places to visit with other guests or just to be alone. The feel of the whole place really speaks to us. The walk down the 1.2 mile long driveway as the sun is rising is spectacular and the sunset isn't too shabby either. Before you go, take time to study the area's history- the Santa Fe Trail for example. The Boy Scouts of America Philmont Scout Ranch is next door. Take time to visit their Villa Philmonte, their Tooth of Time Trading Post andnthe Seaton Museum ( open, but in a temporary home while a new one is being constructed )

Was able to surprise my wife with a weekend stay for our 20th anniversary. We were pleasantly surprised when we were let in thru the gate and started down the 1.25 dirt road and saw dear on one side and antelope on the other we knew this was going to be a special weekend. When we arrived at the covered portico and greeted by Allison , she already had our room key, gave us a tour of the beautiful home and it's history. She showed us to our room, The Phillips, and it was beautifully decorated with its period and private bath. This room was only one with a fireplace but since it was labor day weekend wasn't needed. We parked out vehicle in the assigned area, we were warned that a bear has been rummaging in the area lately so make sure we didn't leave any food in our vehicle. The views were stunning when we pulled into parking area. We slept in perfect peace in the bed that you just melted into. The next morning my wife awoke like a kid in a candy store when she saw seer grazing outside the window, of course I was still one with the bed, but it was nice to see her excited. We went to breakfast with the other couples. Allison had made fresh coffee and juice, to go with quiche that was out of this world. We spent the day exporting the local area of Cimarron and the St James hotel which was fantastic since I love history. We had a late lunch and went back to the B&B, when we arrived Shannon went to the room and I made us some hot tea, on the way back she started squealing like a child on Christmas morning, when I arrived she said shhh you might scare him away. She was looking at the bear in the woods outside out window. She took a bath and commented about how the softened water made her skin feel smooth. We noticed that the room had been cleaned and freshen up. We slept again peaceful again. We went to breakfast again to stuffed toast with all the trimmings. Sadly we had to end our weekend had to come to an end. But we will definitely be back.

Location nestled against the Sangre de Cristo was fabulous. Five nights gave us the peace we always need. Allison was the best host! We enjoyed our evenings star gazing and watching thunderstorms far in the distance. We came for the land and we not disappointed. The Casa and Allison were a bonus.

I was looking to find a remote location which would reunite me to with the New Mexico I have always enjoyed. Fresh mountain air, stunning colors, rugged smooth and welcoming terrains. Unexpected sounds and visits from wildlife. Gentle-styled floral with welcoming fragrances. Adobe buildings furnished with flair style and history. Inn keeper and staff hospitality absolutely exceptional. My two sisters and I are more than impressed, we like this place. Richard Grey, Austin,TX

One night was not enough to soak up the tranquility of this beautiful spot, hidden away from the noise and rush. The sunset, sunrise and mountain views were captivating, along with the glimpses of wildlife all around. The stars are so clear away from city lights. Loved it! Allison is the perfect hostess, making us feel right at home. Being the only guests that night, and wanting little more than coffee for breakfast, we didn't see her in the early morning. However, we found delicious hot coffee in the pot, fresh juice in the fridge and a perfect loaf of banana bread ready to slice. We had the place all to ourselves. What a way to watch the sun rise.

But the staff and Casa are wonderful. Lovely Breakfast, great snacks and coffee!!!! Beautiful star fill sky's made for a lovely evening. We will think about visiting again, just hope the regulars are not there.

After staying in the Casa del Gavilan while visiting a friend in New Mexico, I can honestly say that I would return just to stay here again. The people are very friendly, and it has a community environment in which all of the guests are encouraged to get to know one another. The location provides stunning views, and there are many chances for close encounters with the friendly deer and rabbits that wander around the hotel. Homemade breakfast is served each morning in a large dining room. I would definitely recommend this place to any staying in Cimarron.

Our stay was for two nights and my wife and I both agreed the Casa del Gavilan Historic Inn is the best experience we have ever shared together in our thirty years of being married. We have spent upwards of $400.00 a night to stay in places around the United States known as 4 and 5 star hotels, but our stay in Cimarron is at the TOP of the list. Wonderful staff, beautiful surroundings and I slept like a baby (QUIET). Also, we had the best breakfasts, especially the egg casserole on our last morning. We were treated to a wonderful experience and plan to be back for another stay(s). Thank you to Allison for her care and making sure our stay was the best it could be, because it was!

The Casa is located in a beautiful, isolated area. The quietness and solitude is intoxicating. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Guests have private rooms and baths, but have access to several beautiful rooms within the main house including the kitchen, library, and a large common room with a fireplace. The views are outstanding...the service is excellent. There is a beautiful courtyard and patio with a great mountain view. An outstanding and unique inn that we hope to return to soon!

This is a magnificent B&B. The rooms and other furnishings are like a museum. The bronze works in the rooms are to behold. It sure is tucked away near the mountains. You must be buzzed in the front gate on your arrival and then given a code for furture returns during your stay. Breakfast was wonderful and the famous St. James restaurant is only a few miles away.. Truly a lovely place to stay.

We stayed at the Casa del Gavilan for 2 nights. The rooms and house are lovely and full of interesting historic photos and information on the area. Our hostess was very nice and we enjoyed sitting with her in the late afternoon on the patio. The setting is amazing with the mountains as a backdrop. Wildflowers, birds, deer and antelope all added to a magical feel.

I have stayed many times at the Casa del Gavilan, and its effect on me has always been civilizing. It helps to know about and like Philmont Scout Ranch, which is very near by and whose history is entwined with the Casa's. Enjoying a glass of wine in the courtyard while watching the sun set over the Tooth of Time is a stirring experience. Having slept many times in Philmont's backcountry, in the storms and lightening and heat, I am thrilled at the Casa's proximity to those memories, while also keeping me at a safe distance. A fine place.

Our favorite place to stay when we visit Northern New Mexico. The staff makes you feel welcomed and tend to your needs. The food is amazing and they are able to handle dietary restrictions easily. The rooms are charming and comfortable. The views are stunning, and the courtyard is the perfect place to see the mountains and enjoy your first cup of coffee.

We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Casa del Gavilan in northern New Mexico. The house was pretty and nicely decorated. The location is very naturally beautiful and quiet. The one thing that we were less than thrilled with was the breakfast. It was nothing special and needs attention. Good coffee would be a nice start. Sorry to be critical, but the food didn't match everything else, IMO.
4.4 on November 17, 2014
The Casa del Gavilan was a first night stop on our "girls weekend" of 3 women of "a certain age". It made for the perfect start. The building, a historic adobe structure, is an attraction in it's own right with its thick adobe walls and vigas. It is an old building but the character quickly overshadows any notice of some wear around the edges. The breakfast was both elegant and filling. We stayed in the Guest House which was clean and comfortably furnished and worked well for our group. This B&B is a hidden gem slightly off the beaten path. If you want street lights and city sounds this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a restful comfortable place with a beautiful vista, I would strongly recommend it. Bring a camera and a book and plan to unwind.

The Casa has been a favorite family get-away for years, whether it's a 'Christmas In July Gathering' where we have reserved the entire place or an Autumn visit with friends to just enjoy the peace & quiet, the awesome stars & Milky Way, meet new people, and play a little cards and dominoes.

This place is a gem if you just want to get away for a night or two and relax. You can curl up before the fire with a book from the library or read it on the sun porch or courtyard.. And for those that want something to do during the day, we visited the nearby Seton Museum and Villa Philmont as well as the Chase Ranch located on Ponil Creek and the Kit Carson trading post in Rayado. All four are run by BOY Scouts of America. We also visited the Old Mill Museum in Cimarron. While the Casa only serves breakfast, we had a great dinner at the historic St. James Hotel in Cimarron. Other great places to check out are The Porch for lunch and the Colfax Tavern, "Cold Beer", about 20 miles east on Rt. 64. Their green chili cheeseburger is well worth the drive.

Our stay at Casa del Gavilan was generally very good. It is an old building and shows some wear around the edges, but the patio was lovely, and it was wonderfully quiet. The setting, smack against the Tooth of Time rock formation, was superb. And we enjoyed the longer hike. We found the breakfasts tasty (we stayed two nights) but a bit skimpy. The price was quite fair, somewhat below other B&B's we have stayed in. All in all, if you want a quiet place, off the path, far from any madding crowds, we suggest you check out the Casa.

You could not ask for anything more than what Casa del Gavilan has to offer. Truly beautiful, peaceful surroundings in which you can just feel the history surround you while enjoying the beautiful ambiance of the land as well as the remarkable Casa itself. Clean, comfortable, authentically furnished sleeping rooms, library, dining room, gathering room and outside courtyard all make one feel like what a guest of the original owner,Jack Nairm, must have enjoyed themselves. So much to enjoy!!!

This "home of the eagle" is so much more than the hotel that I expected. From the drive in--where there were a herd of prong horn grazing beside the road, to the spectacular view of the "tooth of time" to the wonderful décor of the great rooms, this was an entirely enjoyable several days. The host was gracious--a really nice person. My wife's favorite was the corn meal pancakes with blueberries. When we got home, the first morning she had to make them again. A delightful experience! Just outside Cimmaron, New Mexico, and a long drive down a gravel road, it is an oasis, seamingly in the middle of nowhere. Cattle graze on the range that they share with deer, antelope and elk. We even saw a jackrabbit on our drive in to this converted hunting lodge bed and breakfast. The 360 degree views are awesome, where the prairie meets the Rockies. It is situated in the middle of a Boy Scout Retreat. Our room was comfy with its king bed and gas fireplace, and the lodge is welcoming with large leather sofas, and reading library. Breakfast is delicious and the kitchen and pantry is available 24/7 for snacks. Wifi is available in the lodge.

The main casa has comfortable living spaces to rest, relax, read and revive. The bedrooms themselves reflect the western heritage and are more than comfortable. Our room was the Webster with a queen size bed as well as a twin in an alcove that made it perfect for our grandson travelling with us.

Casa del Gavilan is the perfect get-away from the stress of daily life. The setting is magnificent, and the quiet of the surroundings is mesmerizing. The inn itself is charming and retains all the patina of its age. This is not a glitzy resort, and that's why it feels so comfortable. The library has real books that you might want to pick up and while away an afternoon reading. Joe and Noelle prepare delicious breakfasts that you might find in one of Santa Fe's best restaurants. But after breakfast, they fade away and leave you blessedly alone. We felt like we had the whole house to ourselves all day. And did I mention the herd of antelope that hangs out in the front pasture? We plan on returning, and its only a 2 and 3/4 hour drive from Santa Fe.

We arrived at the Casa and were warmly greeted by the innkeepers. This beautiful inn has the "picture postcard" view of Philmont's infamous Tooth of Time mountain outcropping. We had a great time, loved the many hummingbirds in the courtyard and truly enjoyed our stay.

Noelle and Joe make you feel very much at home and prepare a wonderful breakfast each morning. Thanks to you Casa!!!!

The old adobe building just shines in all its whiteness while enjoying accentuation of the deep green mountains and gorges that surround you. You cn see forever and while sitting in the courtyard in the evening, you don't want to leave until every star is counted. At these moments the feeling of forever becomes real - and you and I become unimportant. Noelle and Joe watch over your every need - not only with surprising breakfasts but quiet, uninterrupted tea in the afternoon if you wish. As they move and do you know that they are happy you are there. It took them 5 minutes to size me up and from then on they were one jump ahead of me in putting things, ideas, thoughts that I enjoy right out front. Did want to leave - but....

My husband and I have been to many B&B's in multiple states and this one is so very special. It is in a a gorgeous isolated location of New Mexico. The innkeepers are very warm and generous and the breakfast is truly gourmet! Lots of history and hiking trails. I had an opportunity to run part of the old santa fe trail which was really cool. This is a definite must if you enjoy history, serenity, food, and a lovely atmosphere.

My stay was great except I stayed in the Beaubian room and would not stay there again. I like lots of natural light and with the only window leading to the walkway where people can look in, my drapes stayed shut. Other than that, the surroundings were wonderful, the Inn Keepers were the best!, breakfast was good.

We found out about the Casa through the Philmont website and booked on a whim. It turned out to be a fantastic surprise! We loved every minute we were there and wished we could have stayed longer. The Casa is gorgeous and has beautiful views of the Tooth of Time and surrounding areas. The breakfast was delicious - we were more than happy with what was served. Customer service was great also. Loved the Nairn Room - more than enough space for the two of us. Also grateful for the kitchen at our disposal. Only complaint was that the internet didn't work but I can't say we really needed it. Can't wait to come back! Hope this turns into a new family tradition for us!

Our stay on Memorial Day weekend at Casa del Gavilan in Cimarron New Mexico was OUTSTANDING. The location could not be beat. I went to Philmont Scout Ranch as a young Man (22, 24) and to Philmont Training Center with my family 15 years ago. Now I was able to go staying right at the base of the Tooth of Time. The innkeepers, Joe and Noelle are so great. They have only been there a month and have really taken on the location and the Casa. They have learned the area history, and have learned the history of the Casa. The food is great. Had two breakfast and both were so good, and so filling. I love the way we had breakfast so we could interact with everyone. The breakfast alone would cost you $20 a person or more anywhere you go. In my reviews I always say the good and the bad: Good: Location, the house, the rooms, the fact that there is no TV, the food, the Innkeepers, and the price. Bad: Really nothing, I did give a suggestion to improve the wireless Internet, since the building is so thick, it only is in the dining room. I would not only recommend the Casa to everyone, I would scream it from the rooftops

In more ways than one....I normally go for hotels but this B&B rises above all others of the kind. It was great when I stayed there 12 years ago and was even better when I was there last Sunday. The wonderful young couple in charge know what they are doing in a big way.The location is spectacular; miles away from anything and the night sky could humble even the most arrogant among us.

Joe & Noelle, the new innkeepers, were determined to make our stay very enjoyable and ensure we had no issues. They obviously enjoy cooking - all of their food was prepared from fresh ingredients and superb. The location and ambience of the Casa are amazing.

The peace and tranquility of the Casa del Gavilan can not be overstated. The new Innkepers and staff are friendly, professional and very accomodating.

Perfect location - it was rather remote, gorgeous scenery, right where the plans meet the mountains. Loved every minute. Home built in the 1920s surrounded by Philmont Ranch. Can't wait to go back!
