About

Fine dining restaurant and world class music on the New River in the Blue Ridge mountains. There's a mile of riverfront for strolling, wading, tubing, canoeing and fishing. Brown trout and rainbows abound. Walking trails wind through 160 acres. Our neighbors include deer, rabbits, wild turkeys, a great blue heron, an occasional bear - just no mosquitoes. Most of our twelve uniquely decorated guest rooms are converted farm buildings with king-size beds, private bathrooms, Jacuzzis, art, books and country antiques. That is reason enough to visit River House but the food is another. The restaurant offers regional and international cuisine, an excellent wine list, and two full-service bars with all ABC permits. We are open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday. The Sunday Salon features live music, hors d'oeuvres and a four-course Chef's choice menu. A "simple supper" is available on Mondays and Tuesdays for overnight guests. Reservations are essential. Breakfast is served in the main house daily between 8:30 and 10:00. While it is complimentary for overnight guests, many local residents choose to book for private business meetings or simple personal enjoyment. On-site lunches or picnic fare may be pre-arranged, a pleasant adjunct when renting our kayaks or canoes. We will take you up-river so you can take your time floating back to us.

Rooms & Rates

Chicken House

The Chicken House up the hill on the right is a favorite nesting place. It is a long narrow building all by itself, with a small private deck and views of both the river and the mountains. It really was a chicken house. The mantel over the fireplace is a bank of nests and the coffee table is a chicken coop. In addition to the king-size bed there is a twin bed which also serves as a sofa. With two bathrooms, a small refrigerator, a bar sink and a coffee-maker, it frequently serves as a honeymoon roost (preferably for two.) Of course there are eggs in the morning! $195 Sunday-Thursday nights, $225 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 3
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King , 1 Twin

Nightly Rate: $195 - $225

Room 6

Room 6 is at the back of the Caretaker’s Cottage. It looks up the hill toward the barns and you may be able to park right next to the entrance. Can connect to Room 5 living room if desired. Has wi-fi. $150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $150 - $175

Room 4

Upstairs in the main house. A queen-size bed plus a twin bed in an adjoining anteroom. Beware! Both 3 and 4 suffer the occasional midnight or early morning piano concert. Of course the piano player is frequently Emile Pandolfi. Room 4 has wi-fi. $99 Sunday-Thursday nights, $120 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 3
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen , 1 Twin

Nightly Rate: $99 - $120

Wee Cabin

About 4/10th of a mile up a winding driveway, the Wee Cabin in the Woods features a California King bed, whirlpool tub, gas-log fireplace, mini-kitchen and spacious covered deck with a gas grill. No phone (although your cell may work here) or internet but there is a DVD player and screen for movies. The self-sufficient Wee Cabin may be available week-long or longer at special rates. $195 Sunday-Thursday; $225 Weekends/Holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $195 - $225

Room 1

Just down the walk from the main house, this had been Dr. Ballou’s office where he saw patients and stored medical supplies in earlier days. Now we "store" books in a cabinet which formerly served as private club/speakeasy liquor lockers. Three misty watercolor nudes gracefully replace anatomy charts. A cool room with wi-fi, but no A/C. $150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $150 - $175

Room 2

Next door to Room 1 behind the stone wall was part of Doc's office. You may have to duck when you enter the bathroom because we used a great old door that is not standard issue. Anyway, that brings you down to the level of the Lilliputian lavatory in a little antique vanity. Don’t worry, the shower is Brobdingnagian. Has wi-fi. $150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $150 - $175

Carriage House

The Carriage House stands alone half-way up the hill. It really did house a black leather carriage for a time, and besides Carriage House sounds better than "Garage" which it was. (The colorful old gas pump now sits outside the window of Room 1.) Two steps up from the bedroom/sitting area are two bathrooms. Lots of books plus collections of Gourmet Magazine and Architectural Digest. $175 Sunday-Thursday nights, $195 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $175 - $195

Milk Parlor

The Milk Parlor is located on the lower level of the Dairy Barn, the big concrete and block structure just uphill from the Chicken House. A spacious room with private bath (no jacuzzi), a king-size bed and a sitting area with a twin bed. Lots of art. $150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 3
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King , 1 Twin

Nightly Rate: $150 - $175

Room 5

Room 5 is in the front of the Caretaker’s Cottage. Originally the living room, dining room and kitchen, it boasts three distinct spaces: living room/library, bedroom and bathroom. (Incidentally, if there are two or three couples, the living room can connect with Room 6 and/or 7.) Outside, the little private porch, complete with wi-fi, swing and rocking chairs, looks over a giant boxwood to the New River. $175 Sunday-Thursday nights, $195 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $175 - $195

Weigh Station

The Weigh Station is up the hill on the left. In its former incarnation, the whole floor was a scale for weighing cattle as they arrived or exited the farm. Like the Chicken House, it was one layer of boards with cracks you could see through. Private and very cozy - we tell people to unpack their jammies and put the suitcase back in the car. Behind the headboard of the queen-size bed is a quilt handmade by Gayle’s mom. There is a nifty view of the wooded hillside – beautiful when it snows! (Should you plan to get snowed in, the refrigerator, bar sink, wi-fi and coffee-maker may be handy.) $99 Sunday-Thursday nights, $120 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 Queen

Nightly Rate: $99 - $120

Room 7

Room 7 is the upstairs of the Caretaker’s Cottage. It has wi-fi, wood-lined walls, original watercolors, pen and ink drawings, and prints. Downstairs there is a long porch with views of the mountains, the river - and the other buildings. $150 Sunday-Thursday nights, $175 weekends/holidays

  • Maximum Capacity: 2
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 1 King

Nightly Rate: $150 - $175

The Studio

Located in the big barn right next to the Milk Parlor, The Studio has two bedrooms with queen beds. There is a large living area with a fold-out sofa and a full kitchen. Perfect for longer visits or for a family with children. Not bad for short stays either.

  • Maximum Capacity: 6
  • Bathroom Private Bath
  • Beds 2 Queen
