We had a delightful stay during the Big 12 Tournament. I really wasn't ready to come home! Great breakfasts, tasty wine, cheese and crackers and great bedtime cookies and tea that got us leaving the games early enough to get our share! Even made some new friends we'd never have met otherwise! Our compliments to the innkeepers and staff!

Each time we visit KC we stay with Nancy at the wonderfully warm and hospitable Southmoreland. Many of our friends have stayed here if only to quiet us from singing the B&B virtues. We take a walk each evening to a small Italian Restaurant down the street. Nelson Atkins Art museum and Kemper are a stones throw away.

Nancy and Mark are seasoned artists and their craft is hospitality. They have managed to attend to everything you could possibly want or need and have done so in a way that is so uncontrived you almost don't notice it. Their inn embodies a tasteful, seamless aesthetic; a mixture of classic but functional antiques, and new, crisp simplicity with comfort being the top priority. Our room was perfect. It was cozy with a subtle nautical theme. A gorgeous antique cabinet concealed a white noise/sound machine, phone book, and other amenities, and on its shelves behind a glass door was a bowl with giant fresh apples, a decanter of complementary sherry, two tiny sherry glasses, and clean drinking glasses. Our bathroom was spotless and stocked with blindingly white, cushy towels, a hairdryer, shaving mirror, and high quality travel toiletries. Our room had a balcony porch, with a porch swing overlooking the deck and the yard. The bed is the most comfortable bed either of us had ever encountered. THE SOFTEST SHEETS on earth. Seriously, softness from another planet. I don't think a higher level of sleep comfort can be achieved than what can be found at Southmoreland Inn. Breakfast was amazing. It was decadent and light all at once. A subtly sweet poppyseed bread was served with coffee, followed by warm citrus braised pears with a cherry and raspberry sauce (a comforting alternative to the usual fresh fruit plate). A veggie spinach and feta frittata came last with a smashed yukon gold potato on the side. It was filling without being heavy. We enjoyed wonderful, stimulating conversation with Nancy and ended our time at Southmoreland with a walk down the street to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (free to the public!). The Inn is located right in the middle of Kansas City's historic Plaza. On every level, this is our favorite bed and breakfast we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Our highest recommendations and praise go to Nancy and Mark at Southmoreland on the Plaza!

My husband and I had a lovely stay. The innkeepers were very friendly and the food wonderful. Wish we could have spent more time there.

We had a fantastic time at Southmoreland. We experienced friendly staff, clean rooms, and fantastic gourmet breakfasts. Not to mention the short walk to many different attractions. Will absolutely be staying here again!

We booked as a group celebrating a 60th birthday. The staff welcomed us with appetizers and wine. When we returned from dinner at an off-site location, the staff had prepared a place in the dining room where we could have coffee and cake, while exchanging stories, taking photos, and opening presents. The party continued the next morning with breakfast and a private set-up in the dining room. The food was excellent. The service was warm and friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We visited on the patio well passed check-out time. Thanks for an awesome memory.

Lovely, large home with GREAT decor. Would have liked to spend more time "hanging around" but had other fun things to do. Pictures of site are exact. Did I say "lovely"?

This was an incredible place to be for a recent business trip. Our group rented the entire house and was able to connect at a very personal level and build many friendships. This house was very suitable to meet this need and enabled many great conversations and opportunities to occur. Our favorite room is the sunroom/dining area. The food was incredible and we would go back any day. Mark and Nancy truly make this place remarkable.
5 on March 03, 2015
WOW! This place is spectacular. Ask for the Carriage House - fireplace, king bed, sunken tub and even your own garage. The hosts genuinely love what they do. Don't even get me started on breakfast. You have to go to understand how spectacular that meal can be....

Kind, accommodating, efficient staff; breakfast to die for; comfortable, classy decor; every need imagined and met!

Southmoreland is lovingly run, and hospitality is top notch! I couldn't have felt more at home during my stay!

Wow! Got to stay here for a week, and breakfast will never be the same. More importantly, the staff were always friendly. Felt like I was literally a guest in their home - which I guess I was. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Beautiful accommodations. Amazing meals. Extremely gracious and helpful staff. Our group of 11 stayed for a full week and everything was better than we could have imagined. Thank you!

My mother, sister and I stayed here for a shopping weekend. We had 2 rooms and had an amazing breakfast! Nancy helped prepare a couple of gifts for my mom and sister and had them wrapped and waiting in the rooms when we arrived! Perfectly amazing experience!

We stayed in the carriage house for our anniversary. The accommodations were fantastic. We met some interesting guests from DC. Loved the breakfast. I play on booking for next year.

great location, very nice breakfast, edging on gourmet, not just oatmeal and a juice. Staff was very pleasant as well. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

My wife and I stumbled upon Southmoreland on the internet while planning our 10 Year wedding anniversary trip to KC. We will not be waiting 10 years to come back. We want to come back next weekend, just to experience the Nancy's hospitality and Mark's grilled croissant french toast and pork chops! Though we may not be able to come down every weekend, we do look forward to visiting in the near future. Mike & Jen - Omaha, NE

Probably would choose a room without the dormers next time, felt a bit closed in. My fault, I picked it! Everything else was outstanding as always. Am always surprised at how quiet it is in the house, filled with people.

I did a glowing review already - and when completed, I got a "server error" message. So this is short & sweet: great porch, great people, wonderful food, delightful porch(es), comfortable accommodation. :)

We came here for our honeymoon and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Love that its located on a quiet street, but still close enough to enjoy the Plaza!

The Southmoreland is a beautiful old home. The hosts, Rick and Carrie (?) were very friendly and the gourmet breakfasts were outstanding. My husband missed having a TV in the room but he did get the news in the living room. Thanks for a hospitable stay.

This was the best B & B we have ever stayed in. It was conveniently located to everything we wanted to see in the area. The rooms and services were just like home, so inviting and comfortable. We wish we could have just hung out more at the B & B. Maybe next time. We would recommend it everyone we talk to! Keep up the good work for the next 100 years! Loved it!

We had a wonderful time at the Southmoreland. All the staff was very friendly and accomodating considering we showed up early. Food was great, loved the wine in the evening and treats available before bed. The setting was beautiful and so close to Country Club Plaza. The only negative was the bed (though very comfortable) squeaked so bad it woke us up every time one of us rolled over. We stayed in the Gollis room.
4.0 on August 11, 2014
I know it's a getaway, but we really missed having a tv in our room. It's not often that we get to watch tv shows that we want to see (other then Disney or Nickelodeon). Loved the b&b, but will probably choose another place next time based on this.

A lovely time in KC with the full measure of welcome and five-star treatment from the fine people of "Southmoreland on the Plaza".

Beautiful place, quiet, walking distance to the plaza. Definitely a great place to go. Highly recommended
4.6 on August 04, 2014
This bed and breakfast had a lot of amazing qualities; customer service, clean, snacks and a wonderful breakfast, location near the plaza, and courtyard. The only flaw, which totally made our trip not near as enjoyable was the very thin walls. We could hear everyone's conversation near us. The room above us made a lot of noise which made our stay unenjoyable and not relaxing. If we return we will stay on the top floor or the guest house.
5 on August 03, 2014
My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary and were more than pleased with our visit. The staff was very warm and welcoming and the facilities were fantastic. We would recommend the Southmoreland to anyone!

This was our 4th visit to Southmoreland. Rooms are not big but are lovely, quaintly decorated and super clean. We love that it is easy walking distance to The Plaza (where we always go to eat one night) and also several museums. Don't bring a big car as parking is tight but well worth squeezing in!
5 on July 29, 2014
My husband and I have stayed at Southmoreland on the Plaza five times that we can remember. It is the home away from home we look forward to. Southmoreland is a destination place filled with delicious cuisine, friendly staff, beautiful guest rooms and gorgeous gardens. We look forward to our return!

Immaculate and updated, yet all the charm of a 100 year-old home. Don't know how they do it. So nice to have the Nelson-Atkins and Country Club Plaza within easy walking distance. Have had the same delicious breakfast several times now, so hesitate to say this, but changing it up now and then might be nice.

I have stayed in hotels in the KC area and wanted something different this time. The Southmoreland was wonderful in every way and I will NEVER stay anyplace else when I am visiting beautiful Kansas City!
4.4 on July 16, 2014
The overall stay was a great experience and we would go back. We stayed in the Stover room on the 3rd story. The only thing I did not expect was their website says the room has a private deck; however, the deck access is actually across the hall. It is only for the Stover room, but I would not call it completely private. Great breakfast, very polite and professional staff. We'll be back!

Mark and Nancy run a five star B&B. Staff goes above and beyond with recommendations and reservations. Breakfast is DELICIOUS! The atmosphere takes you to a serene place and you relax and enjoy your time. The only down side is unique to us...husband is 6'7" and every bed is a bit small. Visit Southmoreland today!

This was our second time staying at Southmoreland. We enjoyed both times emensly! Property is very nice and large! Sitting on the deck was great. The location can't be beat so close to Country Club Plaza. We will be back!
5 on July 09, 2014
Five stars everywhere. A lovely property, not a thing amiss, yet something lacking--ah yes, the shower, but then I think I complain too much, for there was a two-person jacuzzi! Sadly, did not have time enough to use it. Any disappointment is on me! Seriously good B and B, seriously.
5 on July 09, 2014
My wife and I just completed another wonderful stay at the Southmoreland on the Plaza. Our innkeepers, Nancy and Mark, were as charming and generous as ever with their time and knowledge of the region. The food was consistently good and accommodations were made for our individual tastes. The room was as good as ever, and cool weather for July allowed us to enjoy the wonderful deck both days of our stay.

Only thing that was confusing is the form online asks what time you would like to arrive/checkin, we did so however when we arrived we found out checkin was not until 4 and there were other couples that were there that I believe they understood the dame thing.
4.8 on July 07, 2014
We continue to stay at the Southmoreland because of the amazing location, service and breakfast! The rooms are clean and charming.
4.8 on July 06, 2014
This was our first bed and breakfast experience and I think we will have tough time getting a better one. The room and balcony were great. Room was private. The staff was very friendly and made the visit feel like a family visit, they even refrigerated our anniversary wedding cake overnight. I would recommend this place to anyone. The price was the same as many local big name hotels and came with far more included amenities.
5 on July 04, 2014
This may be the best bed and breakfast experience I have ever had. It was charming, peaceful and quiet. The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. I especially liked the fresh cookies and hot beverages at bedtime.
4.4 on June 30, 2014
A fabulous stay in the heart of Kansas City within walking distance of the Nelson Atkins Museum, The Kansas City, The Plaza and Southmoreland Park (Shakespeare Festival). One of the best birthday presents I ever bought!
5 on June 30, 2014
I was on a business trip, and no "routine" hotel rooms available. Thanks to a very resourceful administrative assistant I was booked into this very quiet, well-appointed bed and breakfast. The welcome was genuine and I was shown the home and reminded of all the amenities. After a quick walk to the Plaza I returned to find my bed turned down, a yummy chocolate atop my pillow, and the welcome didn't end there. Freshly baked cookies awaited me in the expansive kitchen. The owner's served a leisurely three-course breakfast, with my pre-selected time. I have stayed in other B&Bs, where you were at the command of their service. Not so here. I would love to come back and bring my husband for a retreat from the mundane. Simply, Southmoreland on the Plaza will surpass your expectations! J. Pollock

Excellent location within walking distance of the plaza and the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. Exceptional hospitality and service.
5 on June 29, 2014
The breakfast was the best I've ever had, the fanciest to say the least. Our hosts were more than accommodating, their staff, too. Everything you could want in a B&B, pleasant guests, quiet location... PLUS it is within walking distance of The Plaza, fine dining, iconic fountains and museums.
4.8 on June 24, 2014
From the historic and charming atmosphere, wonderful staff, and the splendid breakfast and evening hors d’ oeuvres, Southmoreland has it all!
5 on June 15, 2014
Best hosts of any B & B we've ever stayed in. Best food. Best atmosphere - like home! And the guests that come are friendly and considerate. Deck and landscaping makes it like a secret garden getaway in the middle of a bustling city. Having it so close to the Plaza makes it even more desirable. Nancy and Mark are so knowledgeable about activities and events around KC and can offer suggestions about options for their guests. Always most accommodating to guests needs. We've stayed there for over 10 years every time we come to KC and we try to get there about 6 - 8 times a year.
5 on June 14, 2014
Wonderful friendly service, on everything from unloading the car to loading the car when time to leave. Love it here. Such a peaceful little getaway right in downtown KC. But if you were blindfolded and taken inside and stepped out onto your deck, you would never guess you where you were. Loved it!
5 on June 07, 2014
We felt welcome from the time we arrived. Everyone was friendly, helpful and made us feel at home. We really enjoyed our stay. Will stay again sometime.
5 on June 06, 2014
The location is close to great shopping and dining. Although in the city, it felt like we were in the countryside. Lovely terrace and porch area for relaxing. Enjoyed visiting with the inn keepers. The breakfast and evening snacks were very good!

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights over our anniversary weekend and we absolutely loved it. The owners are extremely friendly and easy to chat with and were very accommodating! The food far exceeded our expectations! You get to sit indoors or outdoors at your own table, which was very nice. My only actual complaint is our room was rather cold, but that's better than it being hot! The home and grounds are absolutely beautiful and it's very near the Nelson and shopping at the Plaza. We walked most of the time and I'm pregnant, so if it had been far we definitely wouldn't have been able to. We loved it and if we ever decide to do a mini-midwest-vacation again we will return!
5 on March 27, 2014
We will return! The combination of professionalism (staffed 24/7, help with bags, thorough tour) and the welcoming personal warmth was refreshing. Their attention to details were stellar and the food was delicious.

Staying at Southmoreland took us back in Time. Was pleasantly greeted by Nichole who have us a tour of this historic Inn. She loves her job and made our first B&B stay one to remember! The inn is 100 h years old and filled with antiques. We stayed in the Thomas Hart Brenton room. There many niceties that make this a great value.

Simply the best place to stay in KC. I have stayed at several other places and the service here is the best. An amazing value. I have stayed here at least five times.

My wife and I came here for two nights of our honeymoon. Neither of us had spent much time in this part of KC. The owners of the Inn we wonderful to us. Very amicable and pleasant. They told us of wonderful places we could explore during the day. Breakfasts were unreal! They treated us (and the rest of the guests) like royalty. We left feeling like we were leaving friends. I would recommend to anyone. That part of KC is really fun.

The rooms are lovely with delightful bedding and special touches i.e. fresh flowers, fruit, turn-down service and chocolates on the pillows! Mark creates wonderful gourmet breakfasts, and Nancy gives special table service to all guests.

You gotta try it--we recently celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Kansas City and stayed at this fabulous B&B. We were guests for four days and wished we had more time, so plan accordingly. Walking distance to the great Plaza area and short driving distances everywhere else. Don't miss the WWI Museum, Lidia's Italy, Christopher Elbow's chocolates, and be sure to take the Boulevard Brewery Tour (plan ahead and book in advance!). We have an old home and came home with ideas on closet make-overs and porch enclosures. And finally, you will have to have a set of their oh-so-soft sheets, and take with you among many memories, a new tradition - the "hour of charm"! (Please consult your gracious hosts for details on both of those...) :-)

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience! We stayed in the tiny but charming Satchel Room. Every member of the staff was helpful, gracious, and informative. The breakfast was like nothing I've ever tasted (in a good, good way). I can't imagine ever choosing to stay at a hotel when for equal or less money could be spent on a charming room, wonderful service and amenities, and an exquisite breakfast. If there could be one tiny downer, it was the cramped parking. But, really, how much time do you spend parking?
4.8 on June 29, 2012
My wife and I had never been to a B&B, so I thought it would be a nice experience for our 32nd wedding anniversary. The people at Southmoreland made it just wonderful. We felt we went back in time right in the middle of a modern metropolitan city. Each room was unique and the experience was something we will both long remember. The only downside was it happen to be 104 degrees outside the day we stayed so our deck was not really usable. Nevertheless, we're already considering a return trip this fall or early winter. We just need to find an occasion to make our reservation.

This is a charming B&B in an excellent location. The Nelson Atkins Museum, The Kemper Museum and Country Club Plaza are within easy walking distance. First time at a B&B. Arrived early and person greeting us was somewhat flustered. Food was excellent. Stayed in the Stover room. Cozy and elegant with a very professional staff; impressive location within easy walking distance to Country Club Plaza and Nelson-Atkins and Kemper art museums. Tasty breakfasts. Lovely indoor and outdoor public spaces. Best value in Kansas City.

We stayed in the Stover Suite for our anniversary in June. The room was very nice; we especially enjoyed the luxury linens and spacious Jacuzzi tub. It was a little too warm to enjoy our private deck though. The assistant who "greeted" us seemed very distraught that we arrived 30 min early. All of the snacks were very nice and we enjoyed an evening on the Plaza. Breakfast was a real let down. Though we had given notice that one of us was a vegetarian the only substitute available for the main course was cereal; not exactly a comparable exchange. After reading other wonderful reviews we were very excited to visit but overall we left disappointed.

Southmoreland is tucked away in the heart of the Plaza area. Our experience was a delight from the website booking to checking out. The innkeepers were very friendly and always available if needed. The evening snacks and breakfast were both scrumptious and the innkeepers made accommodations for my husband's dislike of eggs. Overall, Southmoreland was a treasure to celebrate an early anniversary getaway.
4.4 on April 20, 2011
Even though Southmoreland on the Plaza is right downtown in the Plaza area, once you enter the Bed and Breakfast you are instantly somewhere completely relaxing. Our room had neither a tv or a clock radio- and while initially we thought that odd, we decided we loved it when we realized that it made it that much more romantic for us. We were able to disconnect from the rest of the world and really focus on one another. It was relaxing, and it was very intimate. When we came back from dinner that night, we grabbed a fresh-baked cookie and a cup of tea, grabbed a board game and spent some real quality time with one another. We are most definitely going to have to come back during the winter to be able to stay in another room and be able to use the fireplace in the room as well! Its like our new home away from home :)

We received our stay at the Southmoreland as a gift from dear friends. They had enjoyed their stay so much, they wanted to share the experience with us. As we checked in, we were taken on a tour of the B&B and saw many of the other guests enjoying the welcome reception. We enjoyed some hors d'oeuvres and wine, while sitting outside. Our bedroom was super clean, and welcoming (and rather charming!). Breakfast was delightful and delicious as well. My husband and I both agree that the experience was overall relaxing.

We stayed in the Carriage House. It was a fantastic stay, the room was all by itself with its own parking garage. The room was very big and had awesome decor. Free apples, hot beverage delivered, and sherry. Nice and big bathroom with a whirlpool tub and seperate shower. The staff was very nice and courteous. In the morning we had Eggs Florentine, Poached Pears with raspberry and cherries, and poppy seed bread. The food was awesome and tasted great. We had a great stay and will be back for another stay hopefully soon. Thanks Mark and Nancy and Staff!

Our stay at the Southmoreland was very pleasant. The location was convenient, the room was comfortable, and the hosts very accomodating. Breakfast was delicious! I can only mention one negative, and that is the parking. VERY tight, especially in inclement weather!! (in a truck). We ended up parking on the street. But I realize with great location comes some inconveniences!

What a wonderful surprise.....an upgrade to the suite...the host and hostess thanks for my continuing military service!! The suite was beyond words. Hot cocoa and cookies in front of a wood burning fireplace. Beautiful breeze from the open balcony door while we lay in bed. Wonderful comfy bedding. A paper and hot cocoa (or coffee) was waiting at our door as scheduled. Breakfast was outstanding! Would recommend and can't wait to come back!!!

We stayed for one night 2/12/2011, during the weekend before Valentines day. I knew it would be busy and full and expected it to go less smoothly than a less busy weekend, but I was wrong. They exceeded my expectations in all areas and provided my wife and I an excellent romantic getaway. The check in process was nice with wonderful appetizers and wine available. They got us to our room quickly and gave us a great tour of the inn. It was so close to the Plaza and hundreds of great shopping, entertainment and dining options and the morning breakfst was outstanding. Make sure you pick up a cookbook, because you will surely want to try to duplicate the recipes at home. Make sure you stay at Southmoreland if you want a nice, romantic weekend.

My husband and I are new to the bed and breakfast experience. It was such an enjoyable experience, and we look forward to going back!

We had our wedding there and it was awesome. We filled all the rooms and had the place to ourselves. We stayed in the Carriage House which is behind the Inn. Nancy and Mark were so helpful during our stressful but wonderful day. If you are planning a smaller wedding I would definitely recommend it. Our guests enjoyed having the mall within an easy walking distance.

My Husband and I stayed there for my 40 birthday over New Years. The food was exceptional, the service was over my expectations. The owners go out of their way to make you feel as if you are at home and having a wonderful time. I have never felt such peace! We will be back! Thank you!

We stayed at the Southmoreland to celebrate our 28th anniversary. From check-in to when we said good-bye our stay couldn't have been better. Our room was cozy, the food was absolutely spectacular from the pumpkin pancakes to the fresh banana bread to the fresh cookies and hot cocoa in the evening. Close to the plaza and the art museum which made for an easy walk after filling up on the great breakfast! Great suggestions also for restaurants near-by, and suggestions for things to do in the area. Definitely a must stay for future anniversary get aways!

This is an exceptional Inn with exceptional Innkeepers. The location is perfect, next to the Plaza with its Christmas lights and fine restaurants. Mark and Nancy always make us feel like we are at home. We have made it a tradition to stay at the Inn at Christmas time and we look forward to it every year.

This is a wonderful inn with absolutely excellent gourmet food served every morning, and throughout the day and evening. The rooms are a little small, which is fine by us, but we had no where to put our luggage. The staff was fabulous and very helpful from everything to giving us recommendations for restaurants, to just welcoming us and getting to know us - very friendly! They were also keenly aware of diet restrictions and orders (who got half orders, etc). Really, a wonderful experience to a first-timer in the bed & breakfast world and I hope we can stay there again!!

The breakfasts were incredible. The rooms are the perfesct size. It's like being in your own bed at home. Inn is quaint, quiet and comfortable and centrally located. Our one and only "complaint" was parking if you have a bigger car the parking spaces can be a very tight fit plus do way to turn around so backing out is a bit tight too.

I've stayed at this property approx. 7 times and it has never disappointed. The location...wow...a 5 minute stroll to the elite Country Club Plaza district/mall, across the street from safe and quiet middle class apartments, a 2 minute stroll to the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum and sculpture park (an urban land mass that rivals any in our country for beauty and setting)...the experience is truly an "urban escape". The property owners have exceptional taste and a keen sense of what a business traveler needs; yet, they're able to accomplish this without compromising the soft, hidden away quality that is needed to please their romantically-inspired guests. Food is exceptional, treatment is 'personal' (every guest is treated uniquely), and there are many little subtle touches that enhance the bed and breakfast experience. Even if you have business in the southern Kansas suburbs such as Overland Park/Lenexa, it is more-than-worth the 30 minute commute to plant yourself at the Southmoreland on the Plaza.

We, too, have stayed in B&Bs throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Southmoreland is our very favorite for many reasons: Mark & Nancy, the breakfasts, the rooms, the appetizers, the cookies, the decks, the sunroom. This is a class act!

We have stayed at many B&Bs all over the country & some in Europe. This is by far our favorite in the US ranking right up there with ones we have stayed at in Europe.

The inn is very nice, but we definitely would not recommend the room that we had for a couple. It was the Leroy Satchel Paige room. It is a small knotty pine room. We had a free-standing fireplace, but it nearly cooked us in that little room. One great thing is that the breakfast was delicious.

My wife and I have stayed two times and can't say enough about the inn itself and the owners & staff. What a unique way to spend some leisure days or business travel. Highly recommended!

I stayed here in May 2006 on a business trip. I told our CEO about it and he loves it there. Actually planned an operating committee meeting there. The place is nice, price reasonable, food great, and owners really nice.
