Memorial Weekend Getaway

5 on May 30, 2016

My husband and I had never visited Saugatuck before but had heard so many wonderful things from friends and family that we decided to take advantage of the long Memorial Weekend with a trip away. After much research, we found Marywood Manor and called to see about availability. We immediately got such a warm and inviting feeling from Jan as she described the Old Harbor Suite to us. We booked the next day, and could not be happier! The room was clean and spacious with a separate seating area/living room and a private porch with an adorable swing, gardens, and fountain. We loved the accommodations and the private access to our suite. The breakfast each morning was delicious with homemade granola, quiches, and strata. There is parking for the guests behind the bed and breakfast, and you are within a couple minutes walking distance from the shops, restaurants, and hustle-and-bustle of downtown Saugatuck. We could not stop talking the whole weekend about how much we already were looking forward to our next trip back to Saugatuck, and we will most certainly be staying at Marywood Manor again. Jan and Gary were so welcoming. You could truly tell that they love what they do. We recommend Marywood Manor with flying colors!

Beware of this B & B

1.0 on April 13, 2015

Lovely place, however the owners have a strict "NO cancellation" policy . I had booked this resort for my 60th birthday girls weekend. Three days before check in my elderly father suffer a stroke and was hospitalized in critical condition. I called to explain and cancel my reservation. I was told by Mr Kemp, one of the owners, that the room is considered "SOLD" and that I would be responsible for the full fee unless he could re-rent the room. At the time I made this reservation, by phone with Jan, I was not informed of this, I was not given any type of confirmation written or electronically, by email to substantiate their policy. I offered to pay a cancellation fee however, Gary wanted the full 2 night stay amount of $399.60 Needless to say my credit card was charged the full amount and now I"m in dispute. I have made several attempts to resolve this fairly, with the Kemp's Best advice....don't book this resort unless you are willing to lose several hundred dollars if a loved one is ill or dying and you have to cancel. Or cancel for any reason. There are many other nice B & B's in Saugatauk.

Innkeeper Response
Jan and I appreciate all guest feedback but must respond to this review so potential Marywood Manor customers will know what happened from our perspective and judge for themselves. We hope they read this response and our other reviews and will find that we are easy to get along with, provide excellent value and service and enjoy treating our guests politely and fairly. But we also run a business and must follow good business practices in order to exist. We think these policies have helped insure Marywood’s success over the last 30 years. After reading our comments we would be happy to talk with anyone about any aspect of this situation. This guest did make a reservation on Aug 15, for a stay on Oct 3 – 5, and it was nice to have the booking late in the season. When we took the credit card information we explained that our suites are considered “sold in advance” and can only be cancelled if we are able to refill the suite for the same dates. We have this policy because last minute cancellations have a major negative impact on the business as each suite is 25% of our revenue potential (we have only 4 suites). We have had this policy for over 15 years and always clearly explain it as we do not want misunderstandings later. We also ask everyone to read the policies section on our website where this is clearly covered. Jan specifically remembers explaining the policy to this guest and also checked the box on our reservation form used as a reminder to ourselves. When she called to cancel on Oct 1 (2 nights in advance) she was obviously upset and said she didn’t remember any such policy. Since she made the reservation almost 8 weeks earlier and was very upset about her father, perhaps she forgot the policy. I told her during that call that we were very sorry about her father, reminded her of the policy and committed to doing our best to refill her suite. Unfortunately, we were unable to do so with such short notice. When I called to check about her father and tell her we were unable to re-rent her suite and would be charging her credit card, she got very upset and said that she didn’t think it was fair for us to charge her. She offered to pay a small cancellation fee but not the owed amount. Because I felt sorry about her situation I offered to give her a credit for one night’s stay that she could use in the future for another visit. She said this was unacceptable and that if we charged her credit card she would dispute the charges and not pay anything. She did dispute the charges in early November and after reviewing the situation the credit card company ruled in our favor and maintained the charges on her account. The time limit for her dispute is now over from the credit card company’s perspective. A few weeks ago this guest called again, although it has now been almost 6 months, and demanded reimbursement for the full amount. When I again offered a credit for one night’s stay she got very angry and told me that if we don’t issue a full credit “she and her friends would go to all the evaluation websites she could find and trash our Inn and it’s policy”. It is really too bad, in today’s Internet world, one uncompromising and vindictive person can do damage to a business and it has little recourse. Over the many years of owning Marywood Manor few guests have disputed our policies or not kept their commitments. We have always been able to work out an amiable solution in our few disputes. I am sorry that we were unable to do so in this case as we have made every effort to be fair. We hope you can see the rationale for our policy and will not let it deter you from a visit. Based on our prior guest’s comments we think you will find your stay at Marywood Manor very enjoyable.

Cozy and friendly spot in Saugatuck!

4.6 on October 20, 2014

We enjoyed a Thurs-Sat stay in the Oval Suite. The room was cozy and nicely decorated. There was plenty of room, but B&B standards and the decor was lovely. Jan and Gary, the owners, were very warm and hospitable. Breakfast was delicious each morning and they provided tea, coffee, and water to take with us for the day. Marywood is located half a block off of the main street in Saugatuck, and the price was good for the room and breakfast. We highly recommend!!

Fabulous girls' weekend spot

4.8 on July 14, 2014

This is a lovely spot in one of the quaintest towns along Lake Michigan's shores. From the ease and friendliness of the check-in to the well-appointed, cozy rooms and excellent breakfasts, Marywood Manor is one of the best b&b experiences I've had. Great location, right in the heart of Saugatuk and just a block from the chain ferry - once parked in back of the b&b, we didn't have to use the car at all over the weekend. Jan and Gary, our hosts, were extremely kind, friendly and very knowledgeable about goings on around town and where to eat. Breakfasts always had a hot dish, strata, quiche etc., as well as full and plenty plates of pastries, bread, home-made granola, fruit; great coffee and wonderful array of teas - something for everyone, served out of the beautiful kitchen, with tables set up on the charming porch - to watch the world go by. Treats, including cake & fruit, available all day with an 'if it's out on the counters and edible, you can eat/drink it!' Rooms a good size for 2 people, with plenty of storage space; we were in the Old Harbor Suite which has the fabulous porch swing - good amenities, including small fridge, bottle opener, glasses, tv & fireplace (not that they were used on this visit). Bathroom small, but ensuite, private and spotlessly clean, with good water pressure! Our hosts also provided some bathroom basics: shower gel, shampoo, hand sanitizer. Lovely, tranquil garden complete with fountain and chairs, a wonderful place to relax with a bottle of wine after a hard day's hiking, shopping...Highly recommended and will definitely be coming back.

Best spot to stay in Saugatuck!

4.4 on January 19, 2014

We have stayed at the Marywood twice now and have loved it both times. It's the only place we will stay now when we visit Saugatuck. You can walk to everything which is so nice. Jan and Gary make very good breakfasts, but also have snacks and drinks available in the kitchen throughout the day. The front porch is so nice to sit in and enjoy coffee and a good book. I have seen some negative comments about the innkeepers - my question to them is, are you going on vacation to spend the day with your innkeeper or to spend time with whoever you are vacationing with? We found Jan and Gary to be very pleasant and a wealth of information for good recommendations on restaurants, places to visit, etc. in the area. I would definitely recommend staying here! - Nick and Melissa

Fall splendor

This was an awesome B&B! Historic home with lovely large rooms & wonderful amenities. Especially loved the front glassed in porch where we dined each morning. Excellent breakfast food & wonderful hostess & host. Very short walk to downtown (2 blocks) & very peaceful.

Country comfort

4.8 on August 17, 2013

My sister and I planned a week get-away to Saugatuck and reviewed many rentals. Our final decision was Marywood and we don't regret it. The grounds were very pleasing with well maintained gardens, fountains and outside seating. Our room had it's own porch with a rocking bench. The food was ample and exceeded our expectations. Eggs, omelettes, fresh made pastries, juice, bagels, granola and yogurt, quiche...too much to enjoy!!! Our hosts, Mary and Gary (and Janet), were accommodating, pleasant and knowledgeable, giving us great advice on dining and shopping. We determined that our stay was much too short and hope to plan a longer visit next year. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Our favorite B & B

The attention to detail paid by the innkeepers is 2nd to none, without being pushy. Extremely clean rooms with the best breakfast in Saugatuck.

Very good value for the money!

4.6 on July 01, 2013

The location and parking can't be beat & it's an easy walk to the river, shops and restaurants. Marywood is very clean and the breakfasts are wonderful! We were in the 2 bedroom suite upstairs. The main room is quite large with a king, 3 chairs and table and still plenty of room to move around. The 2nd room is more like an alcove but large enough for another person. I would definitely recommend Marywood.
