We stayed with Gretchen in July 2016 and cannot stress enough what a lovely time we had with this lovely, knowledgeable, gentle but most of all welcoming lady. If you are looking for generic, pristine, plastic accomodation don't come here however if you want quaint charm and quirkiness then come and stay with Gretchen. The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The inn is right on the edge of southwest harbour with restaurants close by within a 2 to 10 minute walk. You are close to several of the attractions of Mount Desert Island too, Mount Arcadia is no more than 5 minutes up the road in the car. My wife and children fell in love with Gretchen, Penury Hall and Southwest Harbour and we all got a hug when we left. We are from the UK so may not make it back to Arcadia but if we do we will be sure to stay with Gretchen.

Gretchen really makes her guests feel at home. The room was great as was the breakfast menu. Terrific location, perfect for exploring Acadia Nat'l park.

A lovely, quirky house where you immediately feel at home. Comfortable room, good breakfasts, and a wonderful hostess who does everything she can to make you feel welcome. Excellent.

We immediately felt right at home at this charming B&B. Gretchen Strong has been welcoming guests into her home for 30 years, and makes sure they are comfortable with her gracious hospitality. The rooms are clean and well appointed, bathrooms are spotless, and towels are replaced with clean, dry ones more than once a day! Breakfasts are substantial and delicious, and Gretchen has her own breakfast with guests and provides interesting and stimulating conversation. She also leaves homemade snacks out during the day and evening. Guests are encouraged to make use of the whole house. The atmosphere is very relaxed and we felt as though we were staying with friends. Gretchen has an encyclopedic knowledge of the area and was helpful with suggestions for where to eat and what to do, but did not intrude on our privacy in any way. The house is a minute's walk to town (Southwest Harbor), charming quiet town but with many amenities. We would definitely stay at Penury Hall again and recommend it highly.

At Penury Hall, you really get your money's worth. The rooms are comfortable, the service is excellent, and the breakfasts divine. Also, a great location -- right in town!

Penury Hall is well run by Gretchen Strong, who is a great hostess and cook! If you want to stay in a real home rather than a hotel or even an outsourced B&B, this is the place. Penury Hall is in a wonderful location and is a quite alternative to nearby tourist-ridden Bar Harbor. Gretchen shares so much knowledge of the area and she helped make our vacation a lot of fun. Shopping, galleries, great restaurants, a bank, grocery store and drug store are just down the street. This is a good location for visiting Bar Harbor, Northwest Harbor, Echo Lake, the Cranberry Isles, or any place in Acadia National Park. We would certainly stay at Penury Hall again.

We felt right at home at Penury Hall. This B&B is casual, comfortable. The breakfast was more than gracious; she was good company.
