"Inn" magine relaxing at a beautiful inn that has so much to offer, that my motivation to go out vanished? The rooms, walls, collections, paintings, prints, books, informational natural history booklets, & a binder of historic landmarks, buildings, & statues...so much more...rooted me to staying "inn". The owners, Steve & Joan, are hardworking, caring, thoughtful people who enhanced the warmth & peace. I travel a lot for my work, & that is why I was there for my first stay. I look forward to future visits.

First Time Weekend Stay a Wonderful Treat

4.6 on July 24, 2017

My wife and our two adult children had a great stay this past weekend as we attended my niece's wedding at the Northfield Golf Club. Others in the wedding party stayed here as well. Our accommodations were wonderful, the breakfast meals were delicious gourmet treats that were "made from scratch" and obviously prepared by someone that loves to cook! The location for this Bed & breakfast could not have been more picturesque & peaceful. We will definitely plan to stay here again the next time we need to travel to the Franklin County area! Thank you to Joan & Steve!

Wonderful Stay

I had received this weekend getaway as a gift for a milestone birthday. It was perfect. The Centennial House was beautiful and the inn keepers amazing. Very friendly and helpful. They knew a lot about the history of the house and the town. They provided recommendations for anything you could need. Breakfast each day was fantastic. The suite we had was amazing. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Thank you Joan & Steve for making my birthday perfect!

Innkeeper Response
Thank you so much! We're honored to have hosted you during a birthday celebration weekend. The things we work at--the room quality, the food and presentation, background on local history and places to enjoy nature, and relationships with the best local restaurants, attractions and retail partners--are what it's all about. If we succeeded at helping you enjoy some of what there is her locally, it makes us happy too! Wishing you all great birthdays, Joan and Steve

Peaceful Bed and Breakfast Experience

4.8 on December 06, 2016

Steve and Joan are very accommodating and flexible with our check-in time. The house is very large and extremely quiet. You feel like you are alone in the house the entire time you are there, which is nice if you are looking for a peaceful getaway. The dining room is beautiful if you like that country feel. I took a lot of pictures throughout most of the interior of the house because of the décor and crafted woodwork. I will definitely be staying there again in the future.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you very much! We appreciate your singling out the woodwork and quiet in your review. Built in 1811, the house was the first commission for Calvin Stearns, who used the opportunity to showcase several molding styles on doorways and mantels because he knew that leading citizens would visit Major General John and Mrs. Nevers in this home and would want houses like theirs. He was right, and the brothers Stearns went on to build most of the houses on Main Street over the next 30 years, from the Federal thru Greek Revival eras. To the trained woodworker, the house "reads" like an architectural style book. The chestnut and plaster walls are relatively soundproof, offering for most guests a restful night's sleep. So pleased you noticed. We love to share this landmark property with the traveling public. It truly is a piece of American history. Best wishes! Joan and Steve

Great service

My husband and I went to the Centennial House for our anniversary in July for a quiet night away and had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful and our room was comfortable. Steve and Joan were very friendly and helpful to our needs. We watched the sunset from their beautiful gazebo out back and enjoyed a fantastic breakfast! We will definitely plan to stay here in the future the next time we need a night away.

Wonderful Hosts!

5 on March 27, 2016

Steve and Joan were wonderful. The first breakfast was a Spring egg bake with lovely asparagus and cheese, terrific fresh fruit and homemade scones. The next morning we had fresh fruit, baked apples and made to order omelettes (we were the only guests that morning). Great king bed with soft, cozy sheets. Terrific!

Innkeeper Response
Thanks Folks, We always say that it's easy to be nice to nice people and you guys broke the mould. We're happy that neighbors and friends recommended us to you and that you took them up on it. We hope you'll visit again and thank you very much for your kind comments. Being in business yourselves you know that good reviews are the best form of referral. Good luck in all you do, J and S

Incredible Hospitality

5 on October 26, 2015

My former college roommates and I spent a night at the Centennial House and were so pleased with our stay. The accommodations were wonderful; such a sweet spot in a quaint town. The home was so welcoming, with beautiful decor and especially comfy beds. We can't say enough about the incredible hospitality that Joan extended to us under an unexpected and challenging situation. She was so understanding and accommodating of our needs. The breakfast was wonderful and again, we appreciated the attention to our special dietary needs. This is a wonderful place to stay with amazing hosts. We would happily return annually and highly recommend this beautiful home when staying in western Mass. Thank you Steve and Joan for the wonderful stay! Leslie T.

Absolutely lovely!

My husband and I were vendors at the Mutton and Mead Ren Faire and this was our Saturday night stay. Joan and Steve were so accomodating, the old house is charming and filled with antiques and coziness galore. We slept soundly and the faint crow of a neighborhood rooster greeted us in the morning. Peaceful, impeccable breakfast. Just a wonderful value and completely enjoyable stay.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you Mary and David! We're honored to meet interesting guests each year in connection with the "Mutton and Mead Festival" in June but this year took the cake! Mary is the author of a new Elizabethan thriller, "The Alchemist's Daughter" that we can't wait to dig into and share with future guests. Thank you for choosing Centennial House as part of your book tour. All the best, Joan and Steve

About the innkeepers

Steve and Joan started "hosting" as residence hall directors at Orchard Hill, UMass Amherst (just don't throw any couches out the windows!). Steve went into theatrical production and adult ed and Joan became a dept. head at UMA and a field researcher at a Boston think tank. She traded in her spreadsheets for a chef's apron and turns out breakfasts guests call "wholesome yet inventive." Their office mates are Buddy and Lenny, two rescue dogs, who keep them in shape and help greet the guests.
