We pulled into La Paz in the late afternoon of the fifth day of a busy, week-long, whales + whale sharks expedition around Baja California Sur, and after a long drive from Loreto. We arrived at Casa Kootenay because its owner and hostess, Leeanne Vanderkooi, is a good friend and former divemaster colleague of the expedition’s organizer and leader. We were immediately made welcome and comfortable by Leeanne and her dog, Ayla, and while we were out for dinner, Leeanne baked an excellent loaf of nut/raisin bread (and some cookies) for our early breakfast the next morning. This Bed & Breakfast is a beautiful place, fronting on a beach of La Paz Bay. One walks from the street through a lush garden/patio and pool area to the main house, where the very nicely furnished and open living, dining and kitchen area gives a broad view of La Paz Bay through wonderful large arched windows. The guest suites, of which there are four across the patio from the main house, are fully and stylishly appointed, and very comfortable. Leeanne is a skilled interior/exterior designer and a marvelous hostess. It is a shame that we had just one night planned for La Paz, as we had no time to enjoy one of Leeanne’s full breakfasts, and were unable to make use of the beach and the kayaks that are available. And we had only a short time to lounge on the rooftop terrace with its panoramic view of La Paz and La Paz Bay. All good reasons for us to come back to Casa Kootenay as soon as we are able to.
We had a great stay at Casa Kootenay and Leeanne was an amazing hostess. The rooms were clean and very comfortable (my girlfriend loved the bed and had the best sleep in months). Leeanne had lots of great ideas about what to do in the area and recommended a great restaurant we all loved. She also made a great breakfast and was very flexible with our plans on when we needed to eat. I highly recommend Casa Kootenay and will visit again on my next trip to La Paz.
We stayed at Casa Kootenay for three nights in February. We had a wonderful time. Leeanne is a great hostess, full of recommendations and help with plans. She connected us with tours that were excellent. We had a beautiful room and enjoyed the common areas. She provides a delicious breakfast too. We loved being on the water and using paddle boards and kayaks. We will return, and we will recommend her Band B to all our friends. Caroline and Mac Johnson
We were there, unfortunately, for only one night. The whole place and experience was fabulous. The view is great and the building has very comfortable rooms. We loved the big dining/living room. Leanne cooks a fabulous breakfast and is helpful in every way. The place is the greatest, but Leanne, the owner/operator is what really makes it what it is. See my review on Trip Advisor to get some pictures. Name is Perry
We just spent 6 days at this charming B & B. I wish I had more time to spend there. The grounds were beautiful. The breakfasts were delicious. There was water sports to try out (I paddled boarded). We spent our evenings relaxing on the rooftop patio. But the best part of Casa Kootenay is the hostess, Leeanne. She is incredibly gracious and kind. I highly recommend asking her for ideas on local activities. I cannot recommend this B & B strongly enough
Casa Kootenay is the most prefect way to enjoy your vacation. The house is absolutely beautiful and the moment we arrived, we felt at ease. Breakfast was amazing every morning and the rooms were inviting and cozy. Coffee on the beach front in the evenings. The hostess Leeanne was very enthusiastic and was available to answer all our questions about the area and to give suggestions to help us plan our days. We actually felt like long time friends by the time we had to say our goodbyes. Couldn't have had a better time.
We loved this B & B so much! All around us was so lovingly cared for with beautiful flowers and gardens inviting you to enter. We felt so welcomed and looked after. The breakfasts were fantastic and the place was wonderfull from the patios outside the rooms to the beachfront views. This was a real oasis. The hostess, Leeanne was sweet and professional and always had a smile on her face. She was extremely helpful and took care of us like we were familly. I whole heartidly recommend Casa Kootenay to anyone.
We had such a wonderful stay at Casa Kootenay. It's located right on the waterfront which makes it so convenient for the watersports they offer. (And the pool is great, too.) The rooms are lovely and I especially enjoyed the rooftop patio. Such a great setting to take in the ocean breeze and chat with new friends. Leeanne is so cheerful and friendly, making you feel right at home. She knows the area so well, she's the go-to person to connect with all the activities in La Paz and the nearby islands. That huge breakfast in the airy dining room is a very special way to start your day. Can't say enough good things about Casa Kootenay.
This was truly a "hits everywishlist" vacation. Staying with Leeanne was like staying with family. You are welcomed and feel at home immediately. I never wanted to leave. Oceanfront beautiful view, clean well-appointed rooms. The owner was extremely knowledgeable about the area and offered beautiful tours and water sports. Too much to do, but so much fun. I would recommend this bed and breakfast to the highest degree. Absolutely wonderful in every way.
Never have I written a review on any hotel or B&B but with Casa Kootenay, I felt I had too. This is truly the best kept secret in La Paz. 5+ star service and hospitality with a smile each and every day. What more could you possibly ask for in a B&B? This place has everything: extreme cleanliness, watersports, a big pool with hot tub, rooms with ocean views, dolphin watching over breakfast, rooftop terrace with lounger, outdoor kitchen, massive and delicious breakfast daily and the list goes on...Leeanne has amazing connections and will hook you up with any activity you want to do from whale shark tours and diving adventures to fishing and sailing. Bringing kids? No problem. She always accommodates and her dog Ayla is a dream with kids. We have stayed here twice before and have just booked our third trip. An all in one luxury B&B that you don't want to miss. Friendly and cheerful hostess, dream location with so much available to you...Why stay anywhere else? Jen, Vic and Bella Juorio
I loved my stay at Casa Kootenay B&B. Leeann and her sweet dog Ayla made me feel at home and so comfortable. My boyfriend and I had a blast on the super sleek Stand Up Paddle boards over to mangrove wetlands that were filled with birds and clear water. Leeann also has kayaks to use, very eco-friendly way to enjoy the beautiful Bay of La Paz. We rented some bikes from her and took a romantic cruise down the boardwalk. Next day Leeann planned out an exciting trip to the near by Espiritu Island where we swam with sea lion pups and snorkeled with an incredible biodiversity of marine life in the marine protected park and swam with sea turtles with a local marine biologist doing surveys. Our last day in La Paz, we snorkeled with whale sharks, a little intimidating at first, but then quickly realized how gentle and passive they are. We met another marine biologist doing photo identification of each whale shark and learned so much. Our trip was enhanced by the knowledge of Leeann and her connection with local marine biologists. Before each day trip, Leeann fed us a delicious breakfast with yogurt, eggs, and plenty of coffee! We are going to return later this year to enjoy her brand new pool and two new rooms with a view. You don't want to miss this B&B, right on the beach! Oh yea, sunsets are so much better with a margarita in hand!!!- WOW!
I have been to Casa Kootenay two times since it opened! It is a great place to relax and wind down! Leeanne is a great host and knowledgeable about the area, she has lots of suggestions for activities and if there is something she doesn't know she will find out for you! She is very knowledgeable about the diving in the area and has great connections for guests. The rooms are very comfortable, clean, and spacious. I like that there is an outdoor kitchen we could use and a huge rooftop patio to enjoy cocktails, start gazing, and views of dolphins in the bay. la Paz is a great place to visit! lots of great day trips and excursions but without the flood of tourists! The night life is fun too! La Paz is a very safe area and the locals are so friendly! I'll be back later this year!!1
My husband and I travel with our two small dogs so finding a place in LaPaz looked rather difficult with Hotels. Not only were they expensive but some wanted $100.00 USD for deposit. Searching the web I ran across this little gem. We arrived yesterday and we were welcomed by the hostess once inside the security gate. Our spacious room with a king size bed and bath was a much welcomed surprise after traveling from Loreto. Don't let the neighborhood discourage you after all it is Mexico.
We just got home from a Spectacular Spring Break in La Paz, Mexico. We flew down via Guadalajara, across the Sea of Cortez, to the beautiful town of La Paz. From the air you first see miles and miles of arid desert with a few cactus, but the brilliant turquoise ocean and white sandy beaches capture your eyes. Driving into La Paz is so colorful with tiled domes, and patios and walls splashed with dazzling bougainvillea. We stayed at the lovely Hacienda Paraiso B&B. Our hosts, Richard and Gloria, took such good care of us, arranging boat trips, taxis, and recommending the best restaurants and places to see. We totally loved our week strolling the festive Malecon, snorkeling with Whale Sharks, Sea Lions, & tropical fish, kayaking with dolphins, watching breaching Humpback Whales, exploring the amazing beaches, and camping for 3 glorious days on the Island of Espiritu Santo.
This was my second 2-week stay at Hacienda Paraiso and I want to go back again and again to this wonderful place. Richard and Gloria offer superior accommodations with a personal touch, you feel right at home. There is so much to see and do in La Paz and they can hook you up with tours, taxis, restaurants and attractions. The beautiful pool was an absolute necessity for our hot August stay this year. Breakfasts are more than ample in quantity and variety, and our room was spotless and very comfortable. Richard even offers books from his private collection so you can read up on the flora and fauna and history of the area while you're there.
My wife and hooked up with another couple ( our new friends ) in Cabo and rode our rental Harleys north to La paz in Feb 2012. When we arrived in La Paz we called Richard and asked if he had any rooms available as we were going to be staying the night after a long day on the road. Richard and his wounderful wife greated us with open arms and made us feel right at home.Once we had settled into our rooms, Richard offered to give us a ride into town to a great local restaurant. The next morning we awoke to another sunny day and a wounderful breakfast. It was even better than we had imagined. There hospitality is beyoned anything we have experience from our many travels over the years both in Canada and the US. Kodos to the both of you for being such gracious hosts. We will be returning in the future, but plan on spending more time with you. I would recomend this B&B to anyone who enjoys being pampered and good conversation. The king size beds were very comfortable. Next time I hope to get out on the water with Richard. Phil & Tanja from BC Canada
We chose Casa Tuscany in La Paz for its proximity to the heart of the city. We were not disappointed. Our room was small but nicely appointed with great decor and was very comfortable for the two of us. Great shower! The towels are plush and brightly colored. Breakfast was to die for. Carol, the owner, must be gaining a reputation for her outstanding Ebelskivers. What a treat! I can only recommend one check them out for themselves. We had a great stay.
If it is in La Paz, Baja Ca. ; an Inn, a B&B, or a Boutique Hotel, I probably been there. Most are acceptable but rather plain and in truth, need some repair. Courtyards can be small or cluttered and the amenities, few. Not so Hacienda Paraiso de La Paz Inn. The outside design stood out of the surroundings inviting us to want to see more. Once inside, we saw how truly special this place is, a real "Gem". I want to say this... I have been to many places some reviews have called "Gems" (out of shear ignorance of what's available), only to find a Zircon, not a Diamond. This place is a Diamond! During our stay (May' 10), we felt relaxed in a most spacious courtyard giving us both, privacy and beauty. When considering the package, beauty, charming, very clean rooms, outstanding pool, exercise room (which I used), personal safes, and secure indoor parking, this place is a steal. Richard and Gloria where most wonderful hosts and went above and beyond in making sure that we were enjoying ourselves. A highlight was the trip to see and swim with sea lions, very playful animals. That day, in Richard's boat, we saw Blue Whales and Dolphins too boot. Many people were in the warm water with them enjoying the frivolity of the ocation. What a wonderful day that was! Breakfast were both delicious (very Mexican) and filling, and again, Richard and Gloria were always asking if we needed anything else. If you plan to come only once to La Paz, or if you feel the place you have been to before is good enough for a second visit, do yourself a favor and try the New Hacienda Paraiso de La Paz Inn. Your tune will change and your value will increase. Their slogan is "Tu Casa en México" (Your Home in México), and they try very hard to live up to this. We look forward to going back soon! Dan and Shelia
un lugar hermoso en medio de la paz que es increible.
So relaxing and private! Wonderful accommodations and host, Richard, and hostess, Gloria. They provide a secluded home for you and wonderful varying menus for breakfast. Richard had gone fishing one day and came home and invited me for dinner. Not expected, but absolutely heavenly! No hotel art here, but wonderful real art and sculptures everywhere, including in room. I will definitely return one day. I can't say enough. Be sure to make this a stop on your vacation!
We staid for a weekend in Hacienda Paraíso in La Paz and had a wonderful time. The facilities are very nice, as described in their website. Richard and Gloria are very friendly and willing to orientate the guests about what they can do around La Paz according to their interests.
Hacienda Paraiso was more than a pleasant surprise. The owners were friends from the first hand shake. They were tour guides, travel directors, taxi, LaPaz consultants, and much much more. The first time in my many countries of travel that I felt completely comfortable in exploring a new place. Breakfast was outstanding, the location was quiet but if you wanted action on the Malecon it was 5 minutes away by car. We paid Richard and Gloria to take on a boat ride to see Whale Sharks and we could almost touch them. We saw Dolphins by the hundreds, flying rays, and we snorkled with baby sea lions that were inches away from us. We loved the local museum and restaurants (at least 1/2 price compared to Cabo) and met cruisers (people who live on boats) that were just fun and made life seem good. We plan on going back!
Drove up from San Jose de Cabo for a first time trip to La Paz. Best place ever, especially after looking at other places while in La Paz. Several types of rooms, very comfortable, terrace/garden/pool is your living room- much better than walking thru hallways of doors to your room. Turtle in the garden, scientific library with microscopes and fossils, spearheads, shells, etc from all over the region. Jacuzzi. Pool. Large garage for safe storage of car/etc; gracious hosts, great breakfast and conversation. A must try..
