elegant retreat

4.6 on August 10, 2018

Received a warm welcome from Mr Jefferson on arrival who informed me of an ''upgrade '' to the Napolean room as the AC was not working on the second floor. I was a bit insistent that I was fine with the heat and would prefer the room I had booked but after he consulted with a manager on the phone was told it was not allowable as the heat was too dangerous. Promised if the AC was fixed I would be relocated. On my return later, AC still not fixed but I briefly met the owner who said if I was sure I was okay with the heat I could have my ''Moulin Rouge''. In a word ,the room was WOW!! and I was very happy with my stay here and it seemed only the attic hallway was hot, the room was just fine. The mansion is lovely with antiques and chandeliers, a bit over the top in a nice way. The themed rooms are fun and let you live out your fantasies for a night or 2. The Gone With the Wind style verandah was a wonderful place to relax on the rockers or wicker chairs and catch the breeze. Breakfast was simple- cupcakes , croissants and cereals and coffee served buffet style in an elegant dining room tho I finished my coffee out on the verandah. I was surprised I seemed to be the only guest but it was a Monday. It seems the property is in some transition but they were interviewing potential employees and it was a great stay and I would gladly return. I do think from recent reviews I read that the manager needs to respect the wishes of the guests a bit more. It seems many guests are given different rooms on arrival than what they booked and some of the late arrival fees are a bit prohibitive but I wish them luck with this venture.

beautiful mansion stay

4.2 on August 01, 2018

I was warmly greeted by Mr. Jefferson on arrival. Was told I was being placed in a different room due to AC problem on 2nd floor I was a bit insistent that I could live without AC and I really wanted the Moulin Rouge room. Tho at first was told probably not possible when I returned I briefly met the owner who said fine, if I didn't mind the heat and I got my requested room -WOW I was very happy with the room, even prettier than the pictures. It turned out only the upstairs hallway was hot the room was just fine and I'm glad I was a bit of a pest. I loved the sweeping grand porch set with wicker chairs and rockers--what a lovely place to relax. The continental breakfast was fairly simple but delicious coffee and mini cupcakes and croissants. The common areas are very luxe. I was surprised to find I was the only guest! I had a peek at several of the themed mansion rooms and they are lovely and this place has great potential but I did read some bad reviews and some of their fees for late checkins and late departures are a bit exhorbitant which I am sure loses them many potential customers . I enjoyed my brief stay and would stay again. Jefferson, who is fairly new there made me feel at home. The customer isn't always right but it is not a bad idea to cater to their wishes ,within reason .and I'm sure it would help fill the rooms because this place is really nice.

Stately Mansion that needs updating

1.2 on June 23, 2018

A stately mansion that is screaming for updates and maintenance. Missed the late check-in incurred a $50 fee. No problem, but not the 10 min. +, waiting outside the gate, on a dimly light street, to be let in. Love visiting Bed and Breakfasts, around the world, and were looking forward to staying in a lovely, vintage room, full of character/charm. We were “upgraded” to the Mini Corporate Suite with a sitting room, kitchen, and balcony; photos and descriptions can be very misleading. The room was worn, tired, and Freezing. The “walk-in shower” had only enough hot water for one shower and the door that touched your knees, if you were using the facilities. Door knobs were falling off the kitchen cabinets and the only dishes were a stack of economy paper plates, no glasses, cups, flatware. Floor tiles were coming up/rocking. The entire room screamed for a good cleaning; dusty and grimmy floor, bathroom fan was layered with fuzz, walls/baseboards demanded a wipe down, layer of dust adorned the headboard. Love luxury linens, unfortunately, the sheets were of the discount store poly/cotton & the towels of thin, utilitarian variety. The bed made a horrible scream every time someone moved; making sleep impossible. The air conditioning had a shared controller, with the only other occupied room. We played a game of turn it up/ turn it down. One morning, my husband commented it was like camping. Slept with socks and stocking cap; an unbearable 63F. Breakfast was exactly as described:sliced bread, bagels, store-bought danish, yogurt, cold cereal, and fruit. Boring. Almost as weird and concerning, is that there was only one other person in residence, during our entire five day stay. Maybe others had read the previous reviews and taken heed. The location is terrific, one block off the St. Charles Streetcar line. The Mansion was once a beautiful and grand property however, it left me longing for those days and wishing I had made arrangements elsewhere.

Nice house . . . unimpressive guest room

2.8 on December 02, 2017

Magnolia Mansion is located in the charming garden district of New Orleans. Overall, the house is pretty and set back behind a wrought iron fence and locked gate. Our review is heavily influenced by the dreary guest room (Courtyard #1). While our room was large, it lacked natural light, having one small window that looked out into a storage area for a former onsite restaurant. The room was furnished with an odd mix of furniture and wall art that seemed to be put in place to fill spots. Nothing about the room was consistent with the decoration of the main floor of Magnolia Mansion. I'm guessing that our experience would have been different if we had stayed in the main house as opposed to the courtyard. Our room did not have its own thermostat and was cold during the night and into the morning. On a more positive note, our room included a mini-frig, microwave oven and a toaster. Service was adequate with someone being there to check us in and out and give us keys and Wi-Fi code. The attendant was also onsite in the mornings to set up continental breakfast. There is ample street-side free parking.

Magnolia Mansion is a lovely place to stay. It's got a beautiful veranda and an interesting interior. The furniture and chandeliers on the first floor are so beautiful! One thing to know is that there is a long staircase to carry luggage up if you plan to stay here. Finally, one of my favorite things about our stay here was Candace!! She was so helpful and kind! I would come back just for her. ¿¿

Not What I Expected

1.0 on June 13, 2017

We stayed in the courtyard room and it was about as well appointed as a Motel 6 room. Actually, the Motel 6 would have been cleaner and nicer bed. The bed seemed to have a broken edge and the A/C did not work in the room. Being in NOLA in June and having to try to sleep with a room temperature at 79 was a bit much. The floor mat for the bathroom was missing after the first night so we had to step on the wet tile floor and almost slipped. There were bugs and beetles on the floor and in the shower. We asked about the AC being fixed when we left the room on Saturday morning and were told the electrician was there the day before doing some work and she would ask about getting our room cooler. It never happened. Breakfast was VERY limited and there was no hot coffee at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. You could make decaf in the Keurig if you wanted. No staff around to ask questions or request more juice. The inside of the Mansion was very nice and well furnished. If you are on a budget, there are many nicer and cleaner places to stay in NOLA. If you have the ability to spend $250+ per night then go for the rooms inside the mansion or just stay somewhere else. There is plenty of competition in NOLA for B&B and I will be staying at one of them the next time I come to town.

Good value

My wife and I spent a week at this location. Perfect location close to streetcar and restaurants. The room was good and the bed comfortable. The staff were very helpful and always willing to accommodate our requests. Breakfast was a cut above the usual continental. We definitely would go back.

Beautiful and historic!

My husband and I spent our 9 year wedding anniversary in the "Gone With the Wind Room". The room was beautiful and the staff extremely hospitable. The mansion met our expectations. Location was great, close to restaurants and shops and he streetcar. It was really easy to just hope on the Streetcar and head up to Canal Street. The continental breakfast was a plus. We'll definitely stay again on our next visit to NOLA.

Beautiful Hotel with Old World Charm. Great place for Friends and Family to gather, Destination Weddings, Bachelorette Parties, Bridal Party, Bridal Portraits.......The many wonderful ideas are endless and can be made possible by Enrique and his very attentive staff. Great location in The Garden District.

convenient and quiet

2.6 on January 09, 2017

a beautiful facade, and convenient nearby parking. Mgr helpful. No night-time staff but safe entry with gates and keys. Amenities of rooms meager but bed comfortable. Our room was in the house which is better than the add-on off rear of mansion. Few other guests -- felt lonely. Bed comfortable enough. Location ideal for walking in neighborhood and to street car. check on shower facility 'cause bear-claw footed tub impractical. Low, dim lighting impractical.

About the innkeepers

I have an extensive experience in the hotel industry. Specifically in guest houses and bed and breakfasts. My family owned a bed and breakfast from when I was at the age of 3 and I lived in that home for several years. Starting from a very young age I have learned all there is to running these establishments and now use that knowledge to extend the best customer service available in the industry to each and every one of my guests.
