Forest Retreat was the home of Thomas Metcalf, the 10th governor of Kentucky, designed and built by him around 1814 and restored in 1935 by Dr. and Mrs. Eslie Asbury, 17 beautifully landscaped acres on Kentucky's most scenic highway from Lexington to Maysville, with a stone wall perimeter, the historic property is considered an entire district with its 1806 Tavern, The stone barn, Main House, Carriage House, Guest House and historic cemetery where the Metcalf's along with the Asbury's are laid to rest. Forest Retreat was also home to the 1954 Kentucky Derby Winner Determine whose grave marker is also located on the property. Forest Retreat is considered one of Kentucky's best preserved examples of country federal design with décor and furnishings in the federal style, circa 1790 to 1840, additional modern amenities added to make guests feel at home. Come sleep in "The Governor's Bedroom", dine in the gorgeous dining room where Andrew Jackson dined on his way to his inauguration as president of the United States. Henry Clay is quoted as describing it as "a veritable Forest Retreat". My wife and I enjoy Kentucky history. We found this place on the internet and it seemed fascinating. It did not disappoint. The house is beautiful and has a remarkable history. We made ourselves completely at home and had the run of the place as we were the only couple who stayed there that evening. Allysha met us the next morning and fixed us a wonderful breakfast. She could not have been nicer. We had great conversation with her about other areas of local interest. She told us about Daniel Boone's last log cabin across the road. That was incredible, it is just sitting in a shady area in a lower part of a field. Truly enjoyed our stay.

We had a lovely stay at Forest Retreat particularly because of Allysha. She was a very attentive hostess and we enjoyed spending time with her and sharing stories. The bed and breakfast is lovely and very historical! A beautiful site! Thank you!

We stayed for one night in this fabulous historic B&B, it was in a lovely quiet area, the drive here via Paris was incredibly beautiful. Our host Allysha was so lovely and went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay and had lots of great recommendations for a future visit when we have more time to explore the area. The home was very clean and comfortable, with a great breakfast and evening treats. We will definitely be returning!

Terrific and personable communication starting prior to check-in - not common and I appreciated that! Very homey, welcoming staff, location and facilities. Added bonus for us was the history - American Government & Politicians and Horse Racing to name a few. Other historic locations and probably other great stories within a short drive. Already recommended to others and definetly plan to return!
