Been Back to Bettona Several Time

5 on March 31, 2015

I have been back to visit Bettona several times and found a place to call home while I am in the heart of Italy. Michael is really great on helping you decide where to go and what to do and where to eat during a visit. His place is really comfortable and I have stayed in several different rooms - enjoyed all of them and my stay. If you want to get away from the busy world and relax and enjoy the Italian Country side - this is the place to be.

More than a bed and breakfast

4.8 on February 07, 2012

Did you ever wish you had this really cool friend who lived in Italy—in a beautiful palazzo in a charming hilltown—who just loved having guests? Well, you do. Michael La Placa calls his establishment a “Bed and Breakfast”, but it is so much more, and so much better. His palazzo, built in the 17th century, has been lovingly and tastefully restored by Michael himself. It retains all of its old world charm, but is extremely comfortable, with great bathrooms and amenities. It is located in the small and endlessly picturesque town of Bettona, a stone’s throw from Assisi and Perugia. I have been three times in a row during the summer. If you want to be on your own, that’s fine, but Michael is most willing to be your guide to the wonders of Umbria, which he knows extremely well. In addition to the obvious tourist spots, like Assisi, he’s shown me wonderful off-the-beaten-track spots, like the Church of San Franceso in the village of Montefalco, with marvelous Renaissance frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. (We were the only ones in the church!) You will take back wonderful memories and be eager to return often.

Apartment Gufo

This one bedroom apartment is called Gufo because, when I purchased the house, a beautiful white barn owl (gufo) was living among the rafters. The apartment has a cathedral ceiling with wooden beams – salvaged from another part of the house – and a spiral staircase leading to the sleeping loft with a comfortable queen size bed. From the apartment windows one can enjoy the view of the surrounding hills and over into the Spoleto Valley. The spacious main room, again with Mission style furnishings, has a comfortable combination living/dining room with a Stickley table and chairs. The kitchen has a marble counter top, cooktop, stove, fridge, and everything you need to enjoy preparing our local food. The comfortable bathroom, with a shower, has a marble sink and antique floor tiles – again, salvaged from another part of the palazzo. This truly is a delightful apartment to stay in with plenty of light and wonderful views. &#

Apartment Assisi

The extremely comfortable two bed room apartment is called "Assisi" because of its lovely view over the valley toward Assisi. At night the lights of the city and it's rocca are magical. Spacious and airy, the apartment is has rustic stone walls and a beautiful white-washed beamed ceiling. The living room and dining area, with a large dining table, is furnished in the Mission Style. There is a fully equipped kitchen with large refrigerator, dishwasher, and a marble counter top. The bedrooms are furnished with beautiful local antiques and the beds are very comfortable. Bedrooms sleep 4 people — one has a Queen size bed and the other can be configured as a King or as Twin beds. There is a lovely balcony with chairs for relaxing and taking in the countryside.

About the innkeepers

Sometimes you find a project that changes your life completely. Restoring this palazzo did just that for me. After 3 years of restoration, the palazzo is filled with life and functioning as more than just a B&B. Living in the small town of Bettona has also been a revelation for me. We've been welcomed into a community of warm and friendly people where there is always something to do. The dogs and I couldn't be happier sharing our piece of Italy with you.
