Close enough to town, but situated in a peaceful setting makes this the ideal retreat for Galena visitors. The owners are welcoming and provide a tasteful breakfast that will keep you satisfied through to the afternoon. I will continue to make this my preference in the future. Barb

This was our first stay at a B&B. Wendy and Hal were outstanding hosts. Hawk Valley far exceeded our expectations. The house is lovely, clean and very homey. Our room The Woodlands had all the comforts of home and we loved the deck with patio table and chairs to enjoy our coffee and dessert at night. A very special weekend for us, can't wait to go back next year !!!

My wife and I just celebrated our wedding anniversary by spending it in the Pines cottage the weekend of July 25-27. Every aspect of the weekend was outstanding. We took advantage of the Romantic Dinner Package and the Traditional Spa Package. Both were very enjoyable. The cottage, with its double whirlpool and king size bed, was very cozy. Wendy and Hal were very gracious hosts. We are letting all of our friends know of the Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages!

Tucked away on the hills outside Galena, Hawk Valley Retreat & Cabins is an outstanding choice. The 10 acres are lovely and include a walking path and a pond. We stayed in the Pines cabin and it is spacious, nicely decorated, and has a private porch where we sipped our wine in the evening.

I highly recommend Hawk Valley to any couple who wants a nice quiet getaway. The cottage was amazing, there were homemade cookies daily and the service was superb!

My husband and I enjoyed an amazing weekend in the Pines cottage. The food was wonderful and we loved the private dinner. It was great to have a hot stone massage in the room also.

This is a lovely B&B with private cottages as well as rooms in the owner's home. The breakfast is always delicious, and the property is gorgeous! The cottages we stay in are always clean, with great amenities such as a fireplace, jacuzzi tub and flat screen TV with DVD player! I highly recommend Hawk Valley in Galena, IL!

This was our first experience at a B&B. I will definitely be going back to Hawk Valley. We stayed in the Swan Lake Room, one of three in the main house. It was spacious for a bedroom & the bathroom was very nice sized. Hawk Valley has four individual cottages. Both mornings, we ate a delicious, hearty hot breakfast. The servings were very substantial, One of the options was a "Romantic Candlelight Dinner for Two". The cost was $90, but worth every penny. We selected an appetizer, entrée, two sides and dessert. It was enough to serve four! Some of the benefits of Hawk Valley over the other B&B's I researched, Hawk Valley has separate doors that lead from the bedrooms to the wrap-around deck that circles around the entire main house, breakfast serving time is based on when each couple gets to the dining room to eat, cookies & candies are always sitting out for guests. Hal & Wendy are a wealth of information, they suggested several spots to visit that we would not have known about, off the beaten path. I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a casual, laid-back, country setting with delicious food served to feed an army. They are only 8 miles from town, just seems farther because of the country roads, but it doesn't take but 10-15 minutes. When we left, it felt like telling Grandma good-bye to her good cooking & comfy home. Can't go wrong here!!

Great hospitality by Wendy and Hal. Warm and inviting. Felt like being at home but with a full service chef! Rooms were warm and cozy and nicely decorated. Beautiful grounds covered with snow...definitely a nature's paradise as advertised...and definitely going back in the summer! Hal's cooking was amazing considering my husband & I are from the Chicagoland area and have many restaurants to compare to. Hal's culinary skills by far can beat any of the Galena restaurants in town. We picked the romantic dinner as an add on package & had so much food that there was enough for leftovers for a nice lunch the next day! Delicious and a great price too:) Close enough to town yet secluded for a nice romantic or family get away. You definitely won't go hungry!

Beautiful scenery & very peaceful accommodations outside of town but convenient to all Galena has to offer.
5 on February 19, 2014
Hawk Valley Retreat is amazing! Very private in cottages...very comfortable beds...has everything you could need! Breakfast in the main house is outstanding. Wendy and Hal are superb hosts, and excellent cooks! The grounds of the B&B are beautiful..much wildlife to be seen...and very picturesque. We have stayed at Hawk Valley four times, and never want to leave to go home!!

We found Hal & Wendy to be very accomodating. The breakfasts were both very good, and the Hillside cottage was secluded, but not so far that we couldn't walk down to breakfast. We tried snowshoeing and enjoyed walking the perimeter of the property. We hope to return in September when it's a little warmer! :)

My wife and I recently stayed at Hawk Valley. This was our first time to Galena, and this seemed to fit our needs best. The cottages are more then what we expected. Very clean and very well set up with a lot of space. The owners we very knowledgeable, and had excellent recommendations of places to go/visit. The breakfasts we had were comparable to any restaurant, and visiting with the owners and other guests was an added bonus. We truly enjoyed our time, and look forward to a return visit at Hawk Valley Retreat.

This was our third time at Hawk Valley. We've always stayed at the Somerset cabin farthest from the main house, which affords privacy and a great sunset view. The quick walk through the cold winter morning air down to the main house only whetted our appetite for the delicious breakfast. Wendy and Hal are great hosts.

Wonderful hosts. Perfect atmosphere. Clean rooms. Beautiful surroundings. What more can someone ask for?
5 on January 05, 2014
This bed and breakfast was top notch. We went in the winter and were the only ones in the cottage. Since this was the case, we received a free room upgrade. The property is beautiful and the owners treat you better than your own family does. I can't wait to return.
5 on January 04, 2014
I so loved the ambiance and décor of the "Pines" cottage that I stayed in as it spoke dearly to my heart. From the amazing comfort of the wooden log bed frame to the Jacuzzi tub in my room, Hawk Valley is the perfect place to come for reflections in nature. Hal and Wendy's hospitality made my visit even more special as Wendy prepared a delicious dinner and breakfast meal for my one night stay. I will definitely find time to stay at Hawk Valley in 2014!

Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages is surely a retreat from a crazy and hectic life. We found it to be very relaxed and inviting. Wendy and Hal are excellent hosts with lots of valuable information to share about where to go and what to see. We are so glad we took the time to stay here and hope to return! Oh yeah. The breakfasts were filling and we even took advantage of the well prepared Romantic Dinner!

We spent the weekend at the Hawk Valley retreat and cottages. It was our first trip to Galena and my first stay at a bed and breakfast. We stayed in a room in the house and it was very cozy. I appreciated that each room had it's own bathroom and outside entrance. It would be ideal in the summertime! Hal and Wendy were VERY welcoming and warm hosts. Hal was very knowlegable with things to do in Galena and willing to assist us in any way. The break fasts were phenomenal and the service was superb. I would stay here again in an instant!! It was the perfect getaway!!!

We absolutely love Hawk Valley!! We recently just went for the 2nd time a couple weeks ago, and cant wait to go again. We stayed in 'The Pines' both times we visited, and love the theme of the cabin and how it is almost like a home away from home. The hosts (Wendy and Hal) are very nice and pleasant and will answer any questions you may have about downtown Galena...from events going on to different places to eat. And the breakfast that they made.... DELICIOUS! Like I said, we cant wait to go again and recommend it to everyone. (Actually, my in laws just got make from a weekend there just 2 weeks after we visited because it sounded so nice). If you like nature, and need a nice remote getaway, either by yourself or with your spouse, this is the place to go!

When in Galena getting away of the hussel and bussel of the fantastic town this B&B is perfect. Only minutes out of town tranquility awaits you. Naute at it's best with walking trails, wildlife, fishing pond and sunsets. Owners are extremely friendly and accommodating. Their fresh breakfast is made fresh for you and bountiful.

My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary recently( we are a senior couple), and stayed in Somerset Cottage. It was absolutely wonderful. The cottage was sparkling clean and beautifully furnished. Very warm and inviting...not like a cookie cutter motel room. The scenery was breathtaking, especially early morning and dusk. Nature lovers haven! Hal and Wendy were wonderful hosts. They are so friendly and welcoming to all the guests. The breakfasts were awesome.....spoiled us! We are definitely planning to return!

We went to Galena for our 35th anniversary. Researched places to stay on line (we had not been to Galena before). So glad we chose Hawk Valley. Very nice and quiet. Wendy and Hal are wonderful, and their breakfasts are to die for!
5 on September 18, 2013
Wendy and Hal were wonderful hosts and always willing to drop everything to assist in any way to make the stay exceptional...and exceptional it was. Hal provided absolutely scrumptious breakfast fare while Wendy was there to oversee to everyone's needs, whether it was a coffee or tea refill and making certain the table was prepared to all's satisfaction. The views were absolutely breathtaking, the birds and other wildlife fun to observe. The most serene, relaxing and comfortable experience we've ever encountered at a B & B. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their paradise in the country.
5 on September 16, 2013
This place is way out in the country on a lovely big lot; it takes a good half-hour to walk all the way around it on their trail. But it's only a 10-minute drive from Galena. We loved sitting out on the deck with no sounds but the frogs and crickets. Nice, comfortable room, excellent breakfast, kind and helpful hosts. We would unreservedly recommend this place and would gladly return.
5 on September 12, 2013
I picked this place as a way to really get away from things. You really get away. I tried hard to hear any traffic, but I couldn't. We sat and listened to the sounds of the country and enjoyed the cool breezes. Wendy and Hal were extremely gracious hosts, very friendly and accommodating. This would be an ideal place for couples to escape.

Wendy and Hal were awesome hosts for our weekend getaway! A country setting and just a short ride to Galena. Felt right at home and relaxed. We stayed at the main house. Very clean and quite. Access to the deck to enjoy nature and a cup of coffee was right out the door from our room. Our hosts offered directions and suggestions for wineries and dinner.
5 on August 26, 2013
We celebrated our anniversary at Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages. Our room was lovely, with a private door to the outside, where we could have a quiet cup of morning coffee and afternoon wine. I recommend this place to anyone going to the Galena area, you will not be disappointed.

We absolutely loved staying at Hawk Valley. It was our second time staying up there. We stayed in one of the small cottages. It was secluded and private--very cozy! It was also really nice to sit on our porch at high to enjoy the sights and sounds of beautiful summer nights. It is perfect for a short getaway. Hal and Wendy are extremely friendly and make a killer breakfast! Each morning we were able to enjoy a feast and go over our plans for the day, getting directions and more information about pretty much anything in the area. They gave us suggestions on places to visit and things to do while we stayed there, too. The location is great. Just a short drive outside of Galena and close to several wineries. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing trip, this is the B&B for you. The grounds are beautiful and a great place to sit back and enjoy the quiet serenity of Galena's countryside. There is a lovely pond and gazebo--great places to sit back and relax. All in all, this is a wonderful place to stay and I HIGHLY recommend it! Hal and Wendy are amazing, and they definitely make your stay worth while! We look forward to visiting again soon.

We stayed in the cottages. After a long day of motorcycle riding, the whirlpool tub was just what we needed. Hal made a great breakfast and Wendy gave us information the area. We relaxed on the porch with coffee and watched hummingbirds, finches, and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the beautiful property. Can't wait to plan another trip! Thank you Hal and Wendy for a wonderful experience!!

We can hardly wait to plan our next stay there ... especially for the breakfasts! Hal is a superb cook and we never walked away hungry or dissatisfied! Delish!

This place is an excellent getaway. It is quiet, clean, and relaxing. The food was wonderful with very large portions. We enjoyed sitting on the porch watching all of the birds, deer, & butterflies as well as the sunset. There is also a stocked pond, a gazebo, & a walking trail. The property is only about 7 miles from Galena with a nice scenic drive. Wendy & Hal are very friendly as well as helpful. My wife & I decided we will visit every year if not a few times a year.

We stayed in the main house for two nights in June 2013. Nestled in the hills of Galena, Hawk Valley has a small pond with fountain, walking trails, screened in Gazebo and great bird watching. Other nice extras include a large home cooked breakfast, cookies in the main house, a DVD library to borrow from and a refrigerator in each room. The owners were friendly and accomodating. We also noted that the rooms were nicer than the pictures. I think they have been updating things. One thing to note, it is pretty quiet at night but we could hear the televisions and conversations in the other rooms. Fortunately, everyone went to bed around the same time, so it wasn't a big deal. We plan on staying here again. However, next time we might bring a white noise machine just in case we need it.

My husband and I spent four nights at Hawk Valley and couldnt have been any happier! We have never been to a bed and breakfast before, so we were a little nervous about sharing breakfast with strangers, but we gave it a whirl and had a great time. Wendy and Hal (the innskeepers) are amazing and sweet people. The breakfasts were beyond awesome and filling. When we went to check in they were so easy to talk to and they gave us some great spots to visit. Now our cottage was down right perfect for what we wanted. We stayed in the Sommerset, and by far the most comfortable space we have ever been to. The living area was comfortable and had a flatscreen television with cable as well as an electric fireplace. We treated the cottage as if it was our own place, and respected that we didnt need fresh towels everyday, we like to conserve as well. Our cottage allowed us to see the sunsets every night and the privacy and quiet was wonderful. The bed was comfy and the whirlpool hot tub was amazing and relaxing. We booked a couple massage, which couldnt have been greater! Two wonderful massage therapists came right to our cottage and they were both outstanding! We also had the romantic dinner package, and let me tell you the food that Hal and Wendy cooked up was fantastic and plentiful. Needless to say we were stuffed and had left overs! The grounds were clean, and beautiful and the deer, wild turkeys, and all the birds were something we dont get to see all the time living in Chicago. And my goodness the stars at night were incredible. It looked as though you could pluck them out of the sky. The only thing that I would say was lacking was maybe a radio. I can not say anything bad about this place. The town was about a 10-15 minutes drive (which was beautiful and easy to navigate). There was a fishing pond, which my husband enjoyed, and the walking trail all around the grounds was perfect.

This place was amazing. We chose it for our very small intimate wedding. We had about 22 people who attended all family and they were all welcome and made to feel like Hal and Wendy's own family. The cottage was clean and perfect. They accommodate us in every way possible and made it a stress free enjoyable day for all. We will be coming back as Will our parents. It was exactly what we never new we wanted.

My baby sister had her wedding here today. She and the groom stayed in one of the cottages. The cottage was immaculate and well kept with lovely amenities. The wedding was very small, immediate family, and very simple. The innkeepers handled all of it for my sister. It was exactly what she needed. The innkeepers had exactly the right mixture of warmth and service. They made the day ALL ABOUT the family, while attending to every detail. They set a beautiful service for coffee, cake and lemonade after the ceremony in the gazebo with fabulous views. They were also very patient with the children in attendance. There were board games in the common areas that the kids loved to play with. My sister says that they were made to feel right at home immediately. I can certainly believe that as the rest of the guests did as well.

They rooms, service and comfort were all well above standard, & the breakfast was one of the best I have ever had, they gave us a personal tour of the property along with brief history and went above and beyond to make our stay most enjoyable. Would recommend and visit again in a minute.

My girlfriend and I found Hawk Valley through a Galena travel website. We were hoping to do some hiking/ bird watching. We drove out and found that Galena was covered in snow, which made any hiking a little more difficult. We were not disappointed though. We rented the Hillside cottage. The cottage was a good size. We were greeted by Wendy and Hal upon our arrival. Wendy and Hal were very nice. We felt at home as soon as we walked in. Our daily breakfasts were very good. Service was excellent. Our room was turned down while we ate breakfast. The next days menu was posted and a fresh batch of cookies was left in the cottage. We sprung for the couples massage. I would recommend that. Wendy and Hal were very helpful in giving recommendations on what to do and where to go around Galena. We wanted to see some birds while we were there. Hal gave us some directions to Dubuque, Ia where we saw several bald eagles flying around a dam. The retreat is on a beautiful plot of land. You will see a beautiful view in any direction you look. I had a very relaxing stay at Hawk Valley. I am looking forward to going back.

Hal and Wendy were great hosts! They were great to chat with and if you wanted to just go outside and enjoy the country, they would respect that! The breakfasts were awesome with fresh cut fruit and a different delicacy every morning. We had a sausage and egg quiche that were individual servings. Outstanding! The room was clean, expansive, and wi-fi, sat TV and a great big bathroom was included. There was even a small in room refrigerator! The bed was very soft with lots of comforters and pillows. The drive out is beautiful and is close enough to Galena that its not a problem. However, its nice to get out of the hustle and bustle to a nice place in the country. We will be back! Thanks to Hal and Wendy!

This was a great combination of private cottage and B & B amenities. We had our own space but also had a lovely breakfast in the main house. The setting was beautiful with a private porch, nice views, a walking path, wildlife and a pond. I spent an entire afternoon on the porch, reading and listening to the breeze in the white pines. The owners were very friendly and seemed to have thought of everything -- it didn't rain but I noticed an umbrella, just in case. The whirlpool tub was great, the bed was so comfortable (I slept very well!) and the magical cookies that appeared when we came back from town were a nice touch. It was nice to have Galena nearby for dinners and sightseeing. We were also close to other day trips such as a river cruise at Chestnut Ridge and a trip to the "Field of Dreams" movie site in Iowa. Even closer than Galena is a local winery. I definitely recommend this B & B!

Comfortable cottage and accommodating, helpful hosts. Delicious breakfasts!

We had a wonderful time in our Cottage. Hal and Wendy (and Sue) were all very friendly and gave perfect service. They were also informative about things to do in the area. We had dinner in our cottage the second night and it exceded our expectations. First we enjoyed spinach artichoke dip, followed by salad (home croutons and dressing were fabulous) and manicotti.... and then to finish it all off was my favorite dessert, creme brulee.... The breakfast served both days were also delicious.... All in all, our stay there was perfect and can't wait to get another little getaway at Hawk Valley Retreat and stay in another Cottage.

Our stay at Hawk Valley was beyond expectations. It is obvious that the owners of this fine bed and breakfast spend the time and thought to make your stay as pleasurable as possible. The location was perfect for those that want a short drive to town to escape from the crowds and noise. Hawk Valley is very tranquil with beautiful scenery and is a great place to escape for a peaceful relaxing stay. Additionally, the breakfast was remarkable and rivals any establishment in Galena. We will definitely be back for a future stay. Thanks Wendy and Hal for making your home feel like ours.

My wife and I enjoy the peace and quiet of the country and we found it all here! From the moment we entered the area we knew we chose the right place to stay. We stayed 2 nights in the Fox Glen Cottage. If you are looking for a place to jut get away and relax, this is the place for you! We wanted to stay in the Galena area but didn't want to spend much time in the downtown area. The property is beautiful. We did enjoy the bird watching...and yes there are white tailed hawks here. Hal, Wendy and Sue treat you like family, it was a joy to get to know them. We are telling family and friends about Hawk Valley and look forward to going back again.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hawk Valley Retreat. Of all the B&B's we have stayed at in Galena, IL, we enjoyed this one the most. Jane and Hal are GREAT hosts and the food was OUTSTANDING. We will be paying another visit soon. We recommend to ALL!!!!!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages. We booked the Fox Glen cottage. It had more than we expected! It's the best place to go if you want to relax and have beautiful scenery. Our hosts were extremely nice and helpful. Breakfast was very delicious! The prices are pretty decent as well. WeI would recommend this place to anyone...and in fact, we already have!

We live in the country and were looking for a country setting to get away from farm work for awhile. Hawk Valley Retreat was the perfect place for us! We stayed in one of the cottages and it was so quiet and relaxing there. We did go into Galena to go to some museums and do just a little shopping but the trip to town was quick and the scenery on the way was BEAUTIFUL! We are already planning a trip there this fall and possibly in the winter as well. The food was AMAZING! We can't stop talking about how good of a cook Hal is. We also requested a dinner in our cabin one night and there are no words to describe how delicious it was. We definitely recommend this retreat to everyone.

We spent two wonderful days at the Hawk Valley Retreat and can't wait to go back! Hal and Wendy are great hosts - the breakfasts were absolutely delicious, and they even left fresh baked cookies in our cottage! The cottages are just lovely - very clean and spacious, and well-appointed. We were able to enjoy nature and star-gaze at night. Overall, we had a fabulous experience and we will definitely return!

We reserved our rooms at Hawk Valley B&B 7 months before the wedding we were attending in August. It worked out great for us! The B&B was centrally located to everything in the area. Wendy and Hal couldn't have been nicer and the breakfasts were delicious! The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms clean and nicely decorated. Best of all, the fishing pond holds lots of hungry bass - so don't forget to bring your fishing poles!

The setting was secluded and peaceful. The food was delicious and the owners friendly and engaging. We rented one of the small rooms in the main house. They have individual cottages with more room at a higher price. We made our reservations only 2 weeks in advance. We got a good price and a great deal overall.

If you are looking for a place to get away and relax, you cannot go wrong with Hawk Valley. Hosts Wendy and Hal are friendly and welcoming. The studio cottages provide an amazing place to just relax. We will be going again.

My wife and made a recent trip to Hawk Valley Retreat and Cottages for a short two-day getaway. We had a wonderful time during our stay, and the breakfasts were wonderful! The rooms in the main house (where we stayed) were small but very clean and well decorated. I was able to use the wireless without a problem. We plan to go again at some time in the future, and will pay the premium to have one of the cottages which are more private and have a little more space it seems. The site is about 8 miles east of Galena, but we got used to the time (about 12 minutes) it took to get there. Be advised: the last 1/2 mile to Hawk Valley is on a dirt/gravel drive that is well maintained. But the surrounding countryside is beautiful and we saw many himmingbirds and other birds and wildlife. All in all a wonderful experience and well worth the trip!

We stayed 3 nights with Wendy and Hal at Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages, while attending our nephew's wedding in Apple River, IL. Everything about this B&B was outstanding. We will definitely return to Hawk Valley, if we have reason to visit the region again.

Super stay, I would recommend this Bed and Breakfast to everyone. The breakfast is cooked fresh daily by an expert and was super. The Nature in the area is spectacular, and the proximity to Galena perfect, close enough to drive, and far enough to provide peace and quite at night for an undisturbed sleep every evening. 10/10 David and Silvia Foster

Hawk Valley Retreat is a lovely, peaceful place to stay outside of the busy town of Galena. The spacious property has a pond, walking trails and beautiful garden areas filled with a variety of birds. We stayed in the main house. It was very private, and the room had a cool breeze from ample windows and a full screen door(and no bugs!) My sister and I sat out on our deck every morning drinking our coffee in a nice, quiet setting. Hal and Wendy were warm, gracious hosts, but not at all intrusive.. We had a gourmet breakfast each morning and had a mini-fridge in our room with cold water as well as cookies for snacks. The bed was really comfortable and there were a variety of DVD's available to watch in bed at night under our soft, light featherbed. We would love to come again in the fall to see the colors on the beautiful rolling hills surrounding the house. Hawk Valley Retreat is well-kept, delightful place to stay!

Cannot say enough good things about this place. We stayed at Hillside, and it was PERFECT! Not only was the cabin great, but we could not have asked for better host. Hal and Wendy are fabulous!! My wife and I were looking for a chance to get away from the stresses of the busy Chicago life. This was just the thing. A cottage all to ourselves! We just laid around and watched movies, enjoyed the jacuzzi tub, and walked around the grounds for some rejuvenation. On top of that we were able to see the sites of Galena and take in some history and quaint shops. Hal and Wendy were very accommodating and really aim to please!

Stayed at the Fox Glen Cottage for New Years Eve. We wanted to get away from all the noise and ring in the new year in a quiet, rejuvenating way. Right when we pulled into the long driveway, we saw a hawk flying above! Our cottage was very private and very comfortable! Wendy and Hal were very laid back, yet so welcoming and friendly. I felt so comfortable around them. They provided AWESOME customer service! The breakfast they made was OUTSTANDING! And they accommodated my vegetarian needs. You get your own table (or you may have to share with 1 other couple.) Hal and Wendy only stay and talk if you want to. If you and your party want to focus on eating and talking with each other, Wendy and Hal recognize that and don't intrude. They are very good at recognizing the customer's needs. They let us borrow any DVDs to watch over the weekend. Plenty to watch with the satellite TV. The TV/DVD player was very updated. Thank goodness for the wireless internet access too! The fireplace is actually an electric fireplace which you can adjust the settings on. This is better than a real fireplace because it doesn't emit heat unless you want it to. We purchased a spa package and got a couples massage. Wendy arranged for a massage duo to come to our cottage and set up tables and gave us a massage right there in our room! Wendy set everything up for me, and communicated via email about times/dates. This was definitely a treat, and the ladies who gave the massages were super nice and very personable. They assessed our needs and really worked hard to give us the best massage. We walked around the grounds a bit and enjoyed the nature surroundings. SO QUIET AND AMAZINGLY PEACEFUL. I felt so rejuvenated after staying here. I highly recommend Hawk Valley Retreat. It is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at Hawk Valley Retreat. We stayed in the main house. Our room was very comfortable and we felt right at home. Breakfast each morning was excellent and very filling. The grounds are stunning. We usually stay in town, but loved the peaceful, serene setting just a little outside of town. Can't wait to go back!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this beautiful B&B. I think the most telling thing I can say, though, is that when my husband and I stayed here from 2/26-2/28/12, it was our 6th visit since 2006. We are coming back in May for visit #7. Hal and Wendy are great hosts, and do such a good job of making you feel relaxed and welcome. Hal makes some amazing breakfasts, and Wendy is always quick and helpful with advice on how you might spend your day in Galena. The grounds are gorgeous (just look at the pictures!) - in fact, my husband and I had our 2009 wedding at Hawk Valley, and filled up the house and cottages with family members. To this day, everyone talks about how it was the most beautiful wedding they've ever attended. So I encourage you to visit and make some wonderful memories! My family plans on doing so for years to come.

I could not believe how wonderful it was for such a reasonable price. All around great experience. We came back refreshed and relaxed. We are already discussing when to go back again.

The whole visit was better than expected. We wanted to get away so my wife could get some rest and recharge. She had been spending 10-14 hours a day helping my daughter with her 6mo old triplets and needed a break. This place was pefect. The beds were great, the hot tub so relaxing and starting out with a great breakfast served by Hal and Wendy each day was the icing on the cake. The country setting is relaxing and I'm only sorry that my wife and I were having walking problems or we would have been all overthe grounds. We will be back!!!

Hal welcomed us as soon as we walked through the office door and was courteous and very helpful to recommend dining and shopping options in nearby Galena, IL. When we saw our room, I immediately knew that we would be happy at Hawk Valley. It was spacious, clean, and the bathroom was huge. The flat-screen TV is a nice touch. The property has a great little pond, and we spent a couple of hours each day sitting by the pond in the Adirondack chairs and drinking a bottle of wine from nearby Galena Cellars. The location is about 8 miles outside Galena, so the only other sounds we heard were from the nearby farm equipment as the farmers were harvesting their corn for the season (and those were a bit far away, so it wasn't a loud sound, by any means). Breakfast was quite yummy - and Hal makes wonderful homemade English muffins and pancakes. Those who are into stargazing will love the very dark skies in the area...we saw the Milky Way with absolutely no trouble. All in all, we were exceedingly pleased with our stay, with the property, and with the service we received. We highly recommend Hawk Valley and we definitely will be back!

We were going to the Country Fair in Galena and chose to stay at Hawk Valley because it was a little out of town. We could enjoy the crowds during the day and then be able to get away from it all at night. It was a great decision. We had dinner in Galena-went back to Hawk Valley and enjoyed a couple beer around the pond, enjoying the night sky and the sounds of nature. Saturday morning Wendy and Hal got up extra early to make us breakfast so we could get back to Galena for the start of the show. They went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing and comfortable. They even provided us with frosty mugs for the night we brought back a growler of local brew. The sugar cookies they have out all day and night are unbelievable. We tried to stick with just 2 a day but it was really hard. Highly recommend Hawk Valley and will definitely be back next year!!

The grounds at this B&B are exceptional. Glad we chose to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Wendy and Hal were very accommodating and served two wonderful breakfasts. Loved the homemade granola and the mouth watering rolled crepes.

We really needed a get-away, and this was the perfect place for it! Very serene and peaceful. By the time we made our reservations, the smallest room was the only one available, but we sure weren't disappointed. The hospitality was super-friendly, the food scrumptuous, and the accommodations were great. We're thinking next time we'll try one of the cottages! We know one thing - we'll definitely be back!

Just stayed with Wendy and Hal the new innkeepers at Hawk Valley Retreat and Cottages. Had been there before and didn't think it could get any better. Then it did. Highly recommend staying at any of the cabins or guest rooms. Never have I seen a place so well taken care of, providing the well deserved restful get away my wife and I needed.

My husband and I were hoping for a relaxing weekend and that is exactly what we got! The breakfasts were amazing and the innkeepers were wonderful and hospitable. We took walks around the pond and enjoyed the many species of birds. Our room was clean and perfect for us. I would recommend this B&B to anyone!

The place is still unchanged from the old owners, which was great news. Breakfast was actually a bit better than with Jen & Fritz, same friendly and relaxed atmoshpere, but we miss the 10% off come back discount :) It was a great perk to coming back and looks like it is gone with the new owners, even though it was our 4th time coming back to Hawk Valley

This was my first experience at a Bed and Breakfast. I have to say that our stay was an absolutely wonderful experience. Our first night, we had the romantic dinner for two and I can honestly say that I have never had a better meal. Hal is a great chef! He and Wendy made us feel welcome and completely at ease. Kirk and I will be making trips to Galena regularly now and we will always stay at Hawk Valley Retreat. Thanks again for such an amazing experience, Wendy and Hal!!!!

My wife and I have stayed at several b & b's. This is one of our favorites. We stayed in the Hillside cabin. Hal and Wendy gave us a warm welcome and went above and beyond our expectations to accomodate us. They gave great advice about restaurants and things to do in the area. They are very nice and we enjoyed visiting with them. The cabin was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast is great. Very tasty. Being in the country and having our own cabin made our stay very peaceful. We liked having our own cabin, however, we had an opportunity to see the guest rooms in the main house. These rooms are also nice and they have their own entrance. I am sure we would have liked staying in any of these rooms. We really enjoyed our stay and we definitely recommend staying here!

My wife and I stayed in one of the cottages, basically a 24'x24' house with king bed, sleeper sofa, TV, DVD, kitchenette, full bath, and in-room whirlpool tub for 2. Plenty of free bottled water. The king bed was perfect (I like plush and my wife likes firm, yet we both were satisfied with this Verlo mattress -- very rare experience for us to both like the same mattress.) Hal and Wendy were great hosts, very warm and friendly. Breakfast is 8-9 each day (including weekends) during which we met other lodgers, including those who stayed at the main house. Breakfasts were better than I expected, enough to fill my big appetite. Hal has some great recipes, including bacon and cheese quiche in a puff pastry, blueberry pancakes with fresh blueberries in the batter, home made granola, and maple crepes. Juice, water, and coffee at each breakfast, although maybe they had other options (I didn't ask). They have a collection of movies, jigsaw puzzles, and board games that you can borrow, plus fishing equipment if you want to try to catch the 7 lb bass another traveler said was in their pond. Next time we might even bring the kids, but it was a perfect getaway for just the two of us.

Hal and Wendy were great. The food was unbelievable. Was some of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. The property was great, and the fishing was good too. Close enough to Galena to get there, but far enough away for peace and quiet. We will definitely be back.

We had a lovely time. The view is also beautiful. My only recommendation is that the coffee table should be lighter so it is easier to rearrange the living room and pull out the couch so an extra person can stay. Otherwise, Hawk Valley is a wonderful place to stay with lots of little touches like bath salts to use in the whirlpool and some interesting things to read about the history of Galena.

This was mine and my husbands first time staying at a Bed and Breakfast and it far exceeded all our expectations. We decided for our 5 Year Anniversary that we wanted to try out a B&B. Hal and Wendy were wonderful!! You would think that they've been doing this for years, and yet, they only started a couple months ago. The room (Woodlands Room) was very clean and just the right size for us. The room has it's own bathroom as well as a private entrance from the deck which is nice if you come in late, you can go straight to your room without disturbing anyone else in the house. Hal is a wonderful cook. Breakfast was delicious!! They are planning on fixing up the barn with a professional kitchen to hold Cooking Classes. I can't wait for them to get it done, so I can go back!! They have a wide selection of DVD's for you to take back to the room and watch. The property has a nice pond that you can fish in with Bass and Catfish that you must throw back. We didn't fish, but it was just nice walk the path around it. Hal and Wendy are some of the nicest people i've ever met. They like to talk and get to know their guests which was nice. They are also very informative of the places in town. If they don't know of a place and you try it out, they love feedback so they can let any other guests that ask about it. I can't wait to go back. They definitely have repeat customers :)

My husband and I have been coming to Hawk Valley for 5 or 6 years now (in fact, our wedding was there 2 years ago), and were a little nervous when we heard the B&B had changed hands. Well, I'm pleased to say that after staying 3 nights in mid-May, I'm confident the new owners, Hal and Wendy, will keep Hawk Valley the little slice of paradise that it is. The new owners are still learning all of the ins and outs of the Galena area, but are eager to share what they know and hungry for advice and opinions from repeat visitors like us. The breakfasts were great, and the grounds still look amazing - I cannot recommend this B&B highly enough for people who need some time to relax and unwind.
4.4 on May 13, 2011
This is a wonderful B&B. The only trouble was that we were 3 and the third bed was not satisfactory. The food was gourmet, the "new" owners very, very nice and gracious. Very peaceful surroundings and fantastic bird watching. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
5 on May 08, 2011
The moment we drove through the entrance road of Hawk Valley we knew that enchantment of the surroundings was going to be the bewitching element of our stay. The fishing pond, numerous bird species flying about just as many feeders and then the warm greeting from our hosts who immediately offered us coffee and lemonade. Then there was our cottage for the night with every possible convenience and a whirlpool bath that took off every care we might have had for 30 minutes ...heaven! The next morning we were treated to a true chef's offering of fruits in a fruit cup with homemade granola followed by fluffy blueberry pancakes all topped with just brewed coffee. While drinking our coffee we had a chance to revisit the magnificent views followed by observations of migrating birds using the several binoculars and bird books on the premises. We would highly recommend Hawk Valley for couples, families and retirees. We will return again later in the summer and recommend the retreat to our friends.

New owners Hal and Wendy and doing a great, enthusiastic job at being hospitable. The breakfasts were wonderfully done and generous. The place is quiet with plenty of places to walk or run or just sit and enjoy the wind blowing through the pine trees. The cottages are spacious. The rooms in the main house are smallish but pleasant with outside entrances and a good deal of common area to use. No stairs. One room is handicapped accessible including the shower. What they don't yet know of Galena -- having just moved to the area in early April -- they make up for in graciousness and appreciation of the area . . . and an eagerness to learn. We have stayed at two other B&Bs in Galena and this is the only one we want to come back to and invite friends to join us.

We spent the weekend at Hawk Valley and stayed in one of the private cottages. This was our second time staying at the resort and found the acommodations and food to be excellent on both occaisions. The morning views across the valley were wonderful and provided the opportunity to view deer and wild turkeys in their own element. I would recommend the resort and plan to stay there again in the future. The resort is also very convienent to Galena and a number of great wineries in the area.

We stayed in the Somerset cottage and the view was amazing. You are only about ten minutes out of downtown, so you can get there quick but you are away from all the crowds. The breakfasts were great. We did the massage package; massage in the room, which was the best we have ever had. If you are looking for a place to get away from the burdens of life and just relax, soak up nature (or a nice nap), and just enjoy the company of your significant other I highly recommend Hawk Valley Retreat.

We stayed here on April 1-3 and had a fantastic time. We found out the owners just took over the business and they did a fantastic job. There were four cottages on site but we ended up staying in the main ranch house in the Woodlands room. We definitely recommend the cabins because of the privacy and views. The location itself couldn't be more peaceful and it is just a 4 minute drive from town. Plenty to do in downtown Galena itself but we heard from another couple that the in room massage was the best they ever had. Breakfast on day one was buttermilk pancakes made from scratch (simply amazing) with bacon, fresh fruit, coffee and juice. We talked to the new owners a while and I guess he grew up in the south with southern cooking which explains why it was so good. Day two was scrambled eggs, sausage, freshly made home fries, and home made egg mcmuffins (yes made from scratch!) with jelly, fruit, coffee and juice. They also had fresh lemon drop cookies throughout the stay which were a nice treat. We went to town for lunch and dinner each day but would have rather ate at the B&B had that been an option. Overall it was a fantastic weekend. We wanted to get away from it all, see a beautiful part of the country, eat good food and simply unwind and we will definitely be back to Hawk Valley.

We had a fabulous stay and really enjoyed the fabulous breakfasts. Jane was so gracious and so informative on places to visit in Galena and the area. We plan to return!

Hawk Valley was our favorite B&B to visit. The countryside was lovely and much more relaxing than staying in town of Galena. The morning breakfasts were delicious. Jane made us feel very comfortable and was very welcoming. Everything we needed was right there for us. The cottage was beautiful. My boyfriend and I will definitely be back in the near future.

This was our first stay at the Hawk Retreat and it was a pleasure to meet the owners. The breakfast provided was great and the property was first rate. We would stay again.

It was very quiet and relaxing at the cottage. It is close enough to town that it is easy to go and get something to eat or do some shopping, but it is just far enough away that you really can enjoy the experience of the cottages. Breakfast was also great.

This was the 4th time we stayed at Hawk Valley Retreat for a family gathering. It feels like home to the 13 of us but we don't have to cook breakfast or clean up after it. Our hostess Jane let us use the large dining room table for an evening of games. She also provided us with sleds and snowshoes to enjoy the beautiful snow. During our last visit in August, we used her poles to fish in the pond and built a bonfire to cook hotdogs and marshmallows. We'll be back!!!

We recently returned from another great stay at Hawk Valley. We stayed in the main house (Swan Lake room & the kids in the Woodlands room). The rest of our group were out in two of the cabins. The property was a lovely winter wonderland. Something for everyone - sledding hill and snow shoe hikes for the adventurous, beautiful wooden puzzles to challenge the mind and comfy chairs for relaxing/reading/watching the sledding crew. Jane's breakfasts are still some of the best food in Galena. The baked french toast, egg casserole, pecan rolls, etc - let me just say there is no need to eat until dinner. This was our first winter visit as a family and it was easily as wonderful as the summer trips have been.

We love Hawk Valley just outside of Galena; it is relaxing and lets us refresh & recharge. We have stayed in both the cottages & in the house and we like them both though the cottages do offer that extra level of privacy. The accommodations and service are great but it’s the little things that sets this place apart. A highlight each day is the delicious & full breakfast (enough that no one leaves hungry) and talking to the other B&B guests. I’m always surprised at the number of repeat customers (like we are) and how many say they wanted to stay right in Galena but for some reason went to Hawk Valley and now that’s where they always stay. It’s just 10 minutes to Galena and there is so much more you can do at Hawk Valley that you cannot get in town. With this visit being in the winter, we happened to be there when there was about 2 feet of snow on the ground. Jane, the innkeeper, had snow shoes so we hiked around the property one morning. There was a rafter of 40-50 wild turkeys that were in some corn fields adjacent to the B&B. Of course, we could not get too close before they flew away into the nearby woods. The other morning we went walking along the road and could see a deer bounding through the deep snow, the grace was beautiful to watch. Another guest went for a morning run along the road. In the common area in the house, Jane had a lovely wood puzzle that we helped with. Jane always has suggestions for interesting local excursions besides downtown Galena. Once Jane had us go to Shullsburg, WI and we found a local cheese shop; now my wife makes a stop there every visit. Our kids got to sled with their cousins right on the B&B property. These are some of the things that keep us coming back to Hawk Valley. We highly recommend it.

We have stayed repeatedly and just love the quiet. The food is marvelous and abundant. Our kids love to sled down the hills and play games in the house. We like to relax in this little paradise.

My husband and I stayed at Hawk Valley a few weeks ago. It was a little off the beaten path but once we got there we were not disappointed. It was only 15 minutes from town. Jane, the innkeeper, was so friendly and accommodating. Her home cooked breakfasts every morning were well worth the 8:30am serving time. We stayed at the Somerset Cottage. It was such an amazing little cottage. It was so clean and adorable. We immediately felt at home. There was a kitchenette with everything you could possibly need. The bed was so comfortable, the whirlpool was wonderful....everything was fantastic! We had such a wonderful time and we can't wait until we can go back again! This is the PERFECT place for a romantic weekend!

We enjoyed our stay very much at Hawk Valley! We would love to stay longer(or even forever) if we could it was beautiful and restful. Our cottage was much larger than I anticipated and cozy. Next time we go to Galena we will go on a weekend or maybe in warmer months when there is more activities. Jane was a wonderful gracious hostess! Thank you so much!

We stayed at Hawk Valley for 2 nights. The room was very comfortable, and had a tv with a dvd player. The scenery around the cottage was beautiful, even in November. We looked at several other places but this one was by far the best value for our money. We would definitely stay here again next year.

The hosts and food are fabulous, cottages spotless and adorable. This was our 2nd trip and we will definately go back.

While traveling, we always stay at a B&B and have yet, to find a nicer retreat than Hawk Valley. I don't know if it's the quiet serenity, double whirlpool bath, great breakfast or warm hospitality of Jane and Fritz, that keep luring us back. Actually, it's all of the above, that keep us coming back, again and again. Sincerely, Charlie & Diane

My husband and I loved Hawk Valley Retreat! We stayed in one of the cottages and it was exactly what we were looking for. Hawk Valley is a great place to stay if you are looking for a quiet place to just sit back and relax in between of going to downtown Galena, which is not a far drive. The breakfast every morning was outstanding!! We will definitely be going back.

My wife and I recently visited Galena, Illinois for a few days of rest, relaxation and sightseeing. We had visited the area previously and elected to select a different place to stay this time. Fortunately for us we selected a cottage at Hawk Valley. From the time we arrived it was exactly what we were looking for. Jane, one of the owners greeted us and provided us with details of their place as well as the sights to see around town. Hawk Valley is close enough to be in town in a few minutes, but far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the country. The cottage was very clean and neat and the grounds provided us with sights to see during the evening walks. Jane started us on our day with a super breakfast and a recipe to try when we get home. Hawk Valley is definitely the place we will stay when we return to this area.

My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was very private, comfortable and clean. The whirlpool was very relaxing and enjoyable ... especially after the 10 month wedding planning. The massages we received. Were just what we needed to complete our short getaway. The hospitality was second to none, and we enjoyed the short walk to breakfast each morning. We plan on making this bed and breakfast our little getaway each year for our honeymoon. Thank you for the wonderful service, hospitality, friendliness, and morning conversation. We truly had a wonderful time.

The drive up was stunning and the view from The Somerset cottage was outstanding. It was a perfect place to relax and destress. Just wish I would have spent more time there than running around in Galena. The breakfasts are superb and Jane was a great host. The grounds are gorgeous and if you love bird watching, this is the place for you. We'll gladly come back over and over.

it was a short trip, and even having traveled all the way from texas, i would do it again! not going to lie, the decor is a bit "southern grandmotheresque" but the grounds are kept and they are super clean! not to mention the super comfy king sized bed. i highly recommend it! and if i had more time, i would go on and on...
5 on August 18, 2010
I've stayed here several times and don't have any complaints! Loved it!!!
5 on August 16, 2010
This was a VERY relaxing place to stay! The innkeepers thought of EVERYTHING! There were even 'packages' we could buy to have ready for us upon arrival. We got a bottle of wine and a cheese/fruit basket. Then, we just sat back and enjoyed! There were even wine glasses and a corkscrew in the kitchenette area! I had not really thought about it, but there was also a small grill, charcoal, and lighter fluid in case we wanted to stay in for dinner and cook out on our back porch area. We live really busy lives daily, so it was SOOOOO nice to go to a place out in the country that was quiet where we could look out and see the stars at night. I could hear frogs down by the water, and we got to watch a couple of really beautiful sunsets. I would really recommend Hawk Valley for anyone who needs to unwind and get away from the big city, traffic, and the daily grind! FANTASTIC!

We returned to Hawk Valley again this year for yet another wonderful long weekend. We stayed in the main house in the Woodlands with the Bunny Hutch for our teenager. The food, as usual was great. I will be emailing Jane for the recipe for the oven baked french toast - so good, no syrup needed. Highlights - fishing at the pond (they have equipment if you don't), cooking out, waking up to see deer up behind the mainhouse, and sitting in any of the many nooks around the main house enjoying a book or playing games with our family. Jane and Fritz run a beautiful, relaxing property - great place to recharge and reconnect.

Our 4th stay at Hawk valley was every bit the relaxing 5 days we knew it would be. There is no other place we would rather spend alone time together! Jane & Fritz are wonderful people. It was a delight to meet Jane's grandson David as well. The view from the Somerset Cottage is like a beautiful dream. We have already booked the cottage for our trip next year! We would recommend Hawk valley to anyone wanting a quiet, beautiful place to reconnect, meditate & realx. Jane serves Gourmet breakfasts that are second to none! Go! See for yourseleves! You wont be disappointed. Tell them Justin & Missy sent you!

We recently spent 3 nights at the Hawk Valley Retreat with our 1-year old son. Jane was very welcoming and helpful right from making the booking throughout our stay. She offered us good advice on the best things to see and do in the area and provided lots of useful maps and tips. We enjoyed exploring the beautiful grounds and relaxing by the big pond. Hawk Valley Retreat is in a great location and if we're back in the area will consider this B&B first.

From the moment we called to check on availability, Jane was at our service. Once we reserved the room, she sent a map and directions to their lovely property. They were very hospitible and gave you the sense of welcome. Within 20 minutes of our arrival there were three hawks soaring above the field outside our porch door. Wake up early, Jane has coffee or tea waiting for you and the breakfast is AMAZING!! I left with the recipe for her baked french toast that we liked so much. All in all, money well spent and time well spent...we are going back for sure in the summer.

What a great place to relax. We enjoyed visiting downtown Galena, but our favorite part was returning to the cottage. We were able to enjoy a dinner of gourmet leftovers in a romantic setting. No time commitments, no work to be done. The cottage was extremely clean and the kitchen was completely furnished with everything we needed for our dinner. Although you are in the country, far from noise and light, the cottage is first class - nothing rustic about it. The whirlpool tub was very large and bath salts were even provided. It was a perfect getaway and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to escape the everyday routine and relax.

My wife and I checked in on Fri., Feb 26th, all set for a nice getaway! We’ve been to Hawks Valley before, so I knew it was going to be a great weekend. We told some friends about it, so they made reservations too. Jane, the Hawks Valley Innkeeper, is extremely friendly, & very knowledgeable about everything that goes on in Galena, she even has a print out she gives you with information of what’s going on while your there! Our room couldn’t have been any more comfortable! The bed was like sleeping on a cloud! Besides that, Hawks Valley is located in the middle of forests, hills, and open fields, nothing but pure relaxation! When you arrive, your blood pressure drops to nothing, all stress leaves your body, & you don't want to leave!! The main house where the B&B rooms are is beautifully furnished, wood floors, area rugs, comfortable couch and chairs. There are books, DVD's, and puzzles (the innkeeper Jane LOVES puzzles!). By the windows, there are sets of binoculars, for peering out over the landscape and pond. We looked past the fields, & saw animals in the forest! Jane was able to make reservations in town for us at "Fried Green Tomatoes", you HAVE to go there! The breakfast Jane serves is just amazing, an entire gourmet meal! The dishes, the dining room, are beautiful antiques & era pieces; it all comes together in a whirl wind of warmth! There are (2) dining tables, enough room to accommodate everyone! She has homemade cookies out all day, fresh coffee and tea. There’s pop in the fridge, and you can put your own items in there as well! Our room had a over sized tub, great for soaking alone or with your spouse! If you want TV, Hawks Valley is setup with satellite along with the DVD/VHS player for movies, there’s a selection in the office to choose from! We left Sunday, our batteries recharged, & smiles on our faces! We’re already planning our next visit to Hawks Valley! Thanks again Jane, we had a GREAT time!! Sincerely, Chris & Jenny

I enjoyed the seclusion of the inn, it was away from the main strip. But Main St. and all of Galena's attractions were only 10min away. The inn have wonderful hiking trails, the room rates were very reasonable. Jane was very welcoming and the breakfasts were delicious. I had a wonderful time and would recommend to anyone wanting to get away for a little while.

This was my 2nd visit to Hawk Valley and my husbands sixth. We woke up on Saturday morning to the snow covered wonderland. This was our first time to stay in one of the cottages. It was lovely and equiped with every convience. I enjoyed relaxing in the whirlpool. Jane serves up a lovely delicious breakfast. Birding from the living room window is a treat at Hawk Valley. Be sure to put this on your "bucket list".

We had a good time celebrating our first anniversary at Hawk Valley. Our cottage "Fox Glen" was nice. I searched online and called around for prices and availability before I made this reservation. Fritz was the only one nice with me on the phone. With patience, he gave me answers to all my questions without being rude because of my accent. But I didn't understand why he or Jane didn't say "Good-morning" to us at breakfast.I spoke with Fritz on the phone but I didn't see him till this morning at breakfast when he told us without greeting us, to take the shoes off and to put the slippers on. We enjoyed the breakfast:good, to early, not enough for us(it's at 8:30am, not 9am). Jane came with refills for water and coffee but not for juice or anything else( we don't drink coffee, we got milk). We had a lot of fun sledding and we took a walk on the pretty propriety using the snowshoes. Thanks to Jen who had to brig the sleds from the garage;nobody used those recently;but it's fun in winter, if you decide to go there. Also, take your towels, bath robes and some kitchen bowls if you decide to have a salad for dinner or pop-corn during a movie. We couldn't enjoy the whirl-pool on the first night at Fox Glen. Not even a shower. The hot water wasn't hot. Jane came right away when I called her.On the second day morning, the water was the same even if we waited all night for that 80gallons of water to get hot. We spent all second day on downtown Galena and Dubuque-it's worth to visit!! Jane and Fritz took care of water-problem when we were gone...but they said it was no problem. The whirl-pool was kind of small for us also(I'm 5'8 and my husband 6'2- a lot of legs, I know!). After breakfast and at night we were going for a walk on the propriety's road:quite & beautiful views! We'll like to go there again and we recommend this place to everyone who doesn't let "the ugly little things" to screw up your day.

We are already booked again for another visit in 2010. Hawk Valley is a very peaceful place with out of this world breakfasts. It is only a short drive into Galena and Dubuque. Hawk Valley Retreat is a great place for anyone to rest and relax and Somerset Cottage has the best view of all.

This was our second stay at Hawk Valley, and it will not be our last! We love that is set apart from the main town of Galena; we can go into town for shopping and the hustle and bustle, and come back at night for a truly serene and quiet evening. Jane is so wonderful, and her breakfasts are simply to die for. Her French toast bake is too delicious for words! She will help set up reseravations for dinner, and even mail you items you forgot after check-out. :) Cottages are so quaint, and we love the hot tub and kitchenette.

My Husband & I always enjoy our stay at Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages! We have just past our 2nd year, but intend on many many more years of spending our anniversary there. The Cottages are so cozy and private. The Breakfasts are so decadent. The Innkeepers make you feel like family. When we visited this last time a guest suggested a bon fire & Jane was happy to oblige. We roasted marshmallows, and made s'mores, talked & mingled. The grounds are beautiful and the nature trails are spectacular. If you like being out in the country, this is your place to be! We have already booked our stay there for next year! Counting down the days until then....

We just had a weekend getaway to Hawk Valley and everything was perfect. The grounds were beautiful with the flowers in bloom. The pond was full of life with frogs, fish, and turtles. We caught a bunch of bass with some in the 3-4 lb range and lots more bluegills. The bird watching was great with blue herons, green herons, blue birds, hummingbirds, etc… It was amazing to sit on the deck and have the hummingbirds fly right next to you to get to the feeders. One night Jane, the innkeeper, helped us with a campfire down by the pond. Jane provided skewers so we had a cook-out. Breakfast each day was so wonderful my wife asked for the recipes. We went to Galena and Dubuque, IA for shopping, sightseeing and dining. We had a great time. But the highlight of the trip was Hawk Valley and its great hosts, Jane and Fritz. Thanks for making our weekend perfect.

We loved staying at the Somerset cottage in Hawk Valley, enjoying the awesome view of the valley from the deck. Accommodations were roomy yet cozy. We enjoyed the jacuzzi, the walks on the grounds, fishing, and the swing at the main house. Jane and Fritz are welcoming and wonderfully helpful. It is nice just to get away from the hubbub of the city and slow down the pace. Since it is outside of Galena, the stars are spectacular at night. The bonfires at night are great and the breakfasts are delicious!

We need a quick getaway for peace, quiet and relaxation. We found just the place. Our own little cottage on Jane's grounds. It couldn't have been better. It ended up to be just what we were looking for and more. Each morning Jane fixed us the most outstanding breakfast that we have had in a B and B in a long time. Everything was just wonderful and we are looking forward to our next visit. Remember to try "Fried Green Tomatoes" in town, it's the best dinner around. Way too much food. We did bring our own coffee and maker for the early riser, as there is only a four cup in the room. Other than that just perfect.

I started planning our first miny vacation just the two of us in over two years. I started looking at Galena and then I found Hawk Valley. I couldn't believe we could book a cottage for that price and the property sounded so beautiful. I wasn't sure my husband would be interested in it though, so I found a couple other hotels and B&B's for him to look at. He kept comparing everything to Hawk Valley. So I called Jane and booked the last available cottage for the days that we could get away. Then I got nervously excited - what if it wasn't as nice as it sounded, but yet I wanted to get there right away instead of waited the two weeks. Finally the time came and we dropped the boys off at my parents. Wow, what a gorgeous drive it was to Hawk Valley. We arrived early, so we spent time walking through the nature trails, enjoying the beautiful gardens, and walking around the pond. Our room was wonderful. My husband felt instantly comfortable in the Pines Cottage. He is a hunter and the hunting atmosphere of the cottage was perfect. We couldn't help but relax, the furniture was very comfortable. During our two night stay we also enjoyed the swing on the deck and admiring the fountain in the garden just off the edge of the deck. I even was able to complete a puzzle, something I haven't done in a long time. The breakfasts in the morning were delicious. I felt like we were in a restaurant. Jane is a great cook and is wonderful to talk with. I don't know how many times in the last three weeks since our stay, that my husband hasn't said, "Yep, we will definitely be going back to Hawk Valley" and I completely agree. Hawk Valley was exactly what we needed and we can't wait to go back.

I cannot say enough good things about this B&B! My (now) husband and I have stayed here three times in the last 4 years, the last stay being May 27th-31st 2009 for our recent wedding. The location is wonderful, Jane and Fritz (the owners) are friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts every morning are absolutely delicious. For our first two stays, my husband and I took advantage of their midweek special, and even ending up exending our stay one day during our 2008 vacation. For the wedding, Jane and Fritz couldn't have been more helpful. We had a perfect event, and we couldn't have done it without their help arranging and coordinating various things. This is a great place to stay for a romantic getaway, or when you need to unplug from city life for a while. It is a short (10-15 minute) drive to downtown Galena, so you really get the sense of quiet and isolation while still being able to easily get to shopping and dining. The evenings are best spend relaxing with a glass of wine on the private decks that are a part of every cabin and room, stargazing or just soaking in the calm. This is also a wonderful place for a small wedding (~30 people), I couldn't have picked a more picturesque setting!

Our recent stay at Hawk Valley retreat was a wonderful quick trip to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. The room was beautifully appointed, the welcome warm. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, the lively conversations around the breakfast table with couples present for the same reason-wedding anniversary and reconnecting. We were able to explore the town, and every recommendation for eatery was right on the money. we had not had such good sleep in ages, so much so that we made a return reservation for the Octoberfest. We are definitely looking forward to enjoying Jane and Fritz's hospitality and the fall foliage. Who knows? might try our hand at some fishing too, along with horseback riding and shopping at the Galena Canning Company.

Our stay at the Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages could have not been better. The accomodations were clean, private, and spacious. Everything in the room worked perfectly. The setting nestled in the valley was gorgeous and the grounds were maintained in immaculate fashion. The hiking trails were a nice touch as was the setup for birdwatching. We didn't see Fritz much but Jane was an excellent hostess and a gourmet cook. The breakfast meals were scrumptious and immensely gratifying. We look forward to a return trip to Galena and would not consider staying anywhere except Hawk Valley. Thanks for a wonderful and romantic experience. Jeff and Nancy

We stayed for 4 nights and were wishing for more. It is a gorgeous country setting among the hills and valleys outside of Galena. Only about a 10 minute drive back to town. Our cottage was comfortable and very clean. The jacuzzi was nice and large. We had a wonderful view of the surrounding area from our deck. The only sounds are birds and cows. There is a pond stocked with fish and poles to try and catch them. The breakfast is outstanding. Jane is a very good cook. She is the most gracious hostess and is filled with ideas to make your visit to Galena special. I can't wait to go back and spend some more time in this piece of heaven.

Was very peaceful and quiet. Cottage is nice to be seperate from main house. Accommidations was comfortable and food was very tasty. Handicapp accessibility in cabin was great. Listing 'kitchinette' was a little miss leading since there was no stove top or oven. Location was perfect -- not too far or too close from tourism spot.

We had a very nice stay at Hawk Valley. I would recommend it mainly because of the incredible surroundings. It wasn't too far from the things we wanted to do and Jane and Fritz were very helpful and nice. Plus, they have a kitty!

Our stay at Hawk Valley was everything we thought it would be. The country view was breathtaking and the getting away from the hussle and bussle of the city was great. Our room was cozy and we didn't want to leave. Jane's homemade breakfast was excellent and visiting with Jane and others over "comfort food" made our day start well. Driving into Galena is not far and is a beautiful drive. We will stay there again soon.

We had a wonderful stay. Jane was a wonderful host; her breakfasts were the best. She made us feel at home – she is an excellent conversationalist. The cottage was clean and tastefully furnished. It was good to stay outside Galena – very quiet. We ran in the hills around the estate and it was very peaceful and scenic. Recommend a visit to Galena Museum. Its small but interesting. Also went into Dubuque and visited the excellent art museum.

We took a winter weekend and were thouroghly impressed with the very nice cabins and the peace and quiet. The breakfast was better than you would expect anywhere and the hospitality was great. The only thing that would have made it better would be in the spring or fall when there was more green grass and leaves on the trees. We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return.

We had such a wonderful time at Hawk Valley, where we stayed in the Somerset Cottage. The views were spectacular, the cottage was very clean, and perfectly decorated. As we both lead such busy lives, it was so overwhelming to have stayed at such a relaxing, friendly, well kept facility, what a great change!! Breakfast was fantastic in the main house, shopping on main street was so much fun! Jane was a great host, we will definitely recommend this facility to our friends, and can't wait to come back again during the summer! Thanks again for such a great weekend! Lauren and Joe

Jane and Fritz are like old friends from the first time moment you meet them. We loved our cabin and the gorgeous view. Hawks View was the best get-a-way we have had in a long time. Very peaceful and relaxing. The bed was the most comfortable we’ve slept in Absolutely the cleanest lodging facility we have ever stayed at. Jane’s breakfasts alone are worth coming back for. . We will be back to enjoy the other seasons. Thanks for the hospitality!!!

The Hawk Valley Cottege was perfect for our aniversary weekened. The Retreat was only 10 minutes from Galena in the country. It was so peacefull with only the sounds of cows and birds. The cottage was very clean and beautifully decorated. The king size bed was comfy with it's oversized pillows. The wirlpool tub was a great way to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The view from cottage was both breathtaking both day and night. Breakfast was outstanding! A full hot breakfast served on elegant dining ware. First class B & B in the peacefullness of the country.

We stayed at Hawk Valley Retreat and also had our wedding there. Everything was outstanding, and definitely exceeded our expectations. The property is beautiful, and so are the rooms and cottages. The innkeepers were very accomodating, and took care of every last detail with the wedding. It all went smooth and was very relaxing. We will go back for sure!

This was our third stay here. We always stay in the Somerset Cottage. It's perfect in every way. Jane's breakfasts are the best I've ever had! Her baked pancakes with strawberries are my favorite! You feel like you're at home when you stay here. You're set far enough away from the town to have utter peace and quiet. And yet close enough to get to town lickety-split. My husband and I plan on staying here at least once a year. Whenever we go, we never want to leave. Stay in the fall - it's gorgeous!!

This was our second stay at the Hawk Valley Retreat; the reason for my title review is as more and more people learn of this wonderful B&B, it will be so popular that we will have to book our trip further in advance. Jane and Fritz are very nice, friendly, and make it very easy to have a very needed get away. We will be back, we just might have to book our reservations earlier. The Rosenbaum's of Glen Ellyn, IL

Our 4 day stay at Hawk Valley Retreat was terrific. The grounds are expansive and beautiful - the kids all loved running around, rolling down the hills, fishing, hiking....we never ran out of adventures. Fritz and Jane were warm, friendly hosts who made us feel welcome and comfortable. Jane made fabulous breakfasts every morning, and weekend nights were capped off with cozy bonfires. We can't wait to go back!

Jane and Fritz are excellent hosts who treat you right. Breakfast is outstanding (efforts to kidnap Jane have failed). The cottages are perfect for couples or, as in our case, small familes to stay (two families of three and one family of four). The location is perfect "out in the sticks" away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to reach downtown Galena in about 15 minutes.

Just returned from a long weekend stay at Hawk Valley in Aug 2008. Everything was fabulous - as always! From the beautiful property to the mouthwatering food (s'mores never tasted so good) to the blissful night's rest it was a wonderful end to the summer.

Our family gathering in Hawk Valley this year was so enjoyable. I looked forward to breakfast every morning wondering what new treat would be served - and I was never disappointed. I enjoyed reading a book on the porch, watching the hummingbirds around the feeders, fishing in the pond and making samores around the bonfire in the evening. What a lovely way to spend a weekend. Thank you Jane and Fritz for being such wonderful hosts - and we look forward to coming again next year.

We stayed in the Hillside Cottage from July 18 - 21, 2008 and it was a perfect weekend. Their website photos do not do this cottage justice. It is very spacious and clean. Many BnBs have too much "stuff" that just collects dust. This cottage was quiet and had a nice deck with a beautiful view of the sunset. Jane and Fritz are wonderful hosts and invited us to the bonfire on Sunday night. They were there giving us each a sticks, marshmallows, chocolates, plates and napkins for our s'mores. What a delightful and perfect evening. The breakfasts are wonderful with incredible sausages, fresh fruit and a fresh-from-the-oven-pecan-rolls. I highly recommend this BnB. The drive from the BnB to downtown Galena is very scenic. Try to have dinner at both Fried Green Tomatoes and The Cove restaurant at Apple Canyon Lake. Sit on the deck at The Cove to watch the sunset on the lake because it is spectacular!!!

We just returned from a relaxing four day stay at Hawk Valley Retreat in the Galena area. Accommodations are immaculate, service is prompt and dependable. Jane, one of the owners, makes fabulous breakfasts and is friendly, makes great activity suggestions, and is quick with a smile, giving directions, and just about anything you may need. If you are looking for relaxation and just getting away from it all, spectacular views, as well as up to date amenities and downhome hospitality, this is a great haven of peace and renewal.

We have never stayed at a Bed&Breakfast before, but my brother was getting married in Galena so we thought we'd try one out since we usually stay at a resort out there to ski (but this time we were staying in July). I took my boyfriend, and my brother's family to Hawk Valley and it was the most beautiful trip we have had together in so many years we actually planned another family trip to follow. The property is gorgeous, the cabins and house are beautiful and the hosts are friendly. We absolutely LOVED the food! We will definately stay there again in the future and bring even more people next time! Thanks again for the great stay!

We celebrated our 1st anniversary here in July 2008. It was our first time in Galena. Jane was wonderful in recommending places to see and dine. The cottage was perfect and the grounds were great. It was so quiet , peaceful and relaxing. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and always a surprise. Meeting other couples and having conversations over the breakfast table it felt like one big family. My husband and I will be back next year in the fall to see all the beautiful foliage. Thank you to Jane for a wonderful time.

Very clean and orderly rooms. The breakfast was beyond our expectations as well as complimentary coffee and drinks being offered all day. The pond area had wonderful options: catch n release, a sitting swing area to observe the beautiful spectrum of birds, and a sitting area for campfires. This is an outstanding bed and breakfast that we will never forget

Breathtaking. Refreshing. Peaceful. These are just a few of the words I would use to describe our stay at the Hawk Valley Cottage. We were there to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary on Fri and Sat nights. Fri eve we were served a pork tenderloin meal in our cottage by candlelight. Included in the meal package was a bottle of wine. The meal was quite tasty and the scenery was wonderfully romantic. Later that eve we ran the water in our whirlpool bathtub when we noticed a hot-air balloon in the sky. We watched it carefully as it headed our direction. We ran out to meet the crew of 12 as it landed within 20 yards of our cottage. What an exhilarating view and unique experience! Sat morn we were served a spectacular breakfast at the main house and then two massage therapists arrived at our cottage for a 60-min massage. So, so relaxing, need I say more... Afterwards we headed to Galena Cellars for some wine tasting, made our purchases and then sat out on their verandah for a lite lunch of cheese, crackers and, of course, a bottle of wine. The sky was blue and the countryside was breathtaking. We headed downtown Galena to enjoy the rest of our afternoon looking inside their unique shops and then went to our 5:30 dinner reservations. Upon arriving back to Hawk Valley that evening we caught up with the friends we made at breakfast that morning and sat on the main house deck for hours of countryside sounds (bullfrogs, hummingbirds, etc) and good conversation. The following morning we had another delightful breakfast at the main house before we checked out and headed for home. I would highly recommend a weekend at the Hawk Valley Retreat. We will be returning the following season as we want to experience each of the fours seasons at this resort. To experience the beauty and quietness would only be a vow to return to it. Enjoy!

A stay at Hawk Valley was just what our relationship needed! We had a gorgeous cottage to ourselves, complete with fireplace and whirlpool, that was set apart from the main house. The grounds are breathtaking and there is a stocked pond that we enjoyed hours of fishing at. Only minutes from Galena, we were able to enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural environment and then go into town for shopping, a trolley tour and dinner. Jane is very sweet, knowledgeable and makes amazing breakfast! This was a great place to help us relax, unwind and get to know each other again.

Jane was so friendly on the phone. She treated me kindly and assured me this was a very safe place for me and my partner. The seclusion and privacy was perfect while the hospitality was just enough. I was amazed at the variety of birds around. Binoculars were available along with bird books to make bird watching valuable. Jane & Fritz accommodated the vegetarian traveler with no problems. Jane is an excellent Galena travel guide. The other couples that were there were fabulous as well!

What a wonderful find. Truly a healing experience for mind, body and spirit. The cottage was so comfortable, we hated to leave for jaunts to Galena. Peaceful, quiet, private...was anyone else there? Hats off to the owners who clearly are not only sincere, welcoming hosts, but for their vision and dedication to providing this sanctuary for widlife and humans alike. The breakfast was perfect...satisfying in both taste and portion. I especially enjoyed the hot stone massage...right in our cottage..and by a skilled massage therapist! Wow. How perfectly relaxing. I will return...sometimes alone, sometimes with my partner... to recharge, restore and relax. I know I will be warmly welcomed, truly accepted and sincerely appreciated.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hawk Valley. The cottage and breakfast were very homey but yet a treat. Not too many B & B's that we have visited include a kitchenette with plates, silverware, utencils, plus microwave and mini fridge. The location was great. The cottage was very private. It was far enough away from Galena to be in the middle of nature yet close enough to be in town within 10 - 15 minutes. We loved your breakfasts and conversations. We'll be back!

My wife and I came to Hawk Valley Retreat with some friends this past February (08) to see eagles and we were not disappointed. Fritz and Jane Fuchs were so helpful in pointing out the best spots to go looking for eagles. Seeing these awesome birds for the first time was very special. But beyond the eagle-watching, Hawk Valley is full of nature. From the delicious breakfasts in the dining room with good company and birds feeding right outside the window to deer wandering over the road at sunset, to the namesake hawks wheeling in the sky overhead. If you want a quiet retreat from the world to enjoy nature and perhaps learn a little about it, Hawk Valley is for you. And Fritz and Jane will make you feel very comfortable.

I have stayed at Hawk Valley many times since it has opened, and I love every minute of it. There is never a dull moment while staying at this wonderful B&B. When I arrived the numerous times I have gone, the scenery takes my breath away and makes me very tranquil. The hospitality of the owners is above the rest around, from chatting in the morning over breakfast to the afternoon chats around the property. I have never seen two people love what they do so much like Mr. and Mrs. Fuchs. They bring something more to the table when you stay at Hawk Valley. If I had the choice, I would never leave.
