In July 2017 we stayed at Howarth House. The 6 days we spend there were wonderfull. Good night rests in a beautifull room, everyday followed by a relaxing and healthy swim in the swimmingpool. Then a really amazing breakfast. Every day delicious fruitsalad, homemade cake (we still exchange recipies) , eggs/omelet and/or the best bleuberry pancake you can imagine. All cooked and served by the owners Linda and Brian. The nice and open inviting atmosphere of the house and the friendlyness of the owners made us really feel at home at Howarth House. Overall, our experience at the Howarth House was fantastic... One of the best places we have ever stayed! Brian made us feel very welcome, and at home. The grounds were beautiful from the flowers along the pool to the ivy along the house to the areas surrounding the house. The breakfast was top notch, the home fries were the best we've had. We loved the feel of the house... Very homely, inviting, and clean. The billiard room was a favorite, a room in honor of Brian's firefighting life. The pool was an added bonus as well. We would definitly stay here again if in the are!
My band, Roadhouse Strangers, was performing for the summer concert series in the Upper Common and my girlfriend and I decided to stay a few days at the Howarth House based on its outstanding reputation. We were not disappointed. The house has incredible character and such a warm feeling that you immediately feel relaxed and at peace! The public areas are fun to explore and the "man cave" is a must see, especially if you enjoy a game of billiards and appreciate some fire fighter memorabilia that is rich with history. The rooms are gorgeous allowing the perfect amount of privacy. We stayed in the North Room and the walk in shower was an awesome way to unwind after an evening of "Rocking Out!" The outdoor pool is an excellent feature that we took advantage of and the array of flowers and ivy along the exterior is simply breath-taking with attention to detail at every turn. You're given menu options for breakfast. Personally I'm an omelette man and Brian nailed them each time. His potato home fries are pretty amazing too. Linda and Brian really know how to roll out the red carpet and we look forward to our return to the Howarth House!
We only live an hour from Fitchburg and our son moved there a couple of years ago, we visit frequently but never spent the night until recently. Fitchburg may not be a vacation destination but Howarth House is. Beautiful grounds and home immaculately kept and literally just up the hill from Fitchburg State. There are many great places to hang out on the property and the four season porch where breakfast is served looks out on the yard and woods and captures the morning sun. The food is plentiful and great, made to order. Brain and Linda are excellent hosts, nice initial tour and readily available if you need anything but otherwise keep a low profile. Brian knows all there is to know Fitchburg and is happy to share. We;ll be staying again and bringing our other son and daughter as well.
We have stayed at Howarth House 3 times now (once in each room!) We have family in the area and this is hands down the best place in the Fitchburg area to stay! It's just 2 of us, so I think our favorite is the South Room- big enough to spread out and a lovely bathroom with heated floors! The East room is wonderful as well with lots of extra space, fun natural elements incorporated into the room and a HUGE bathroom. The North Room is our most recent stay. It was a little too warm to turn on the fireplace, but I can imagine how cozy it would be in the winter! One thing to note about this room is if you have sensitive hearing, you can hear the pilot light making a sort of sputtering and clicking noise from the fireplace when its very quiet at night (I am told they turn it off in Summer). I'm sure some people won't notice it, but I definitely heard it all night long and created some makeshift ear plugs to be able to sleep. Something to be aware of, but does not detract from the overall experience! The grounds are lovely and fun to roam about. Breakfast is always delicious and overly plentiful (I need to remember next time to order less!). A favorite from this last visit was the lemon blueberry coffee cake. I promptly went home and looked up a recipe to try to recreate it! The owners are lovely and accommodating and easy to talk to. They are there when you need them, but let you have your privacy as well. We are so glad we found this place, and will continue to keep on staying here whenever we are in town, generally a couple times a year.
This location is perfect for ANYONE visiting the Fitchburg area. The hospitality is excellent and the morning breakfast is overwhelming. The owners make sure that you are 100% satisfied, room is extremely quiet, and accomodations were perfect.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for our anniversary and it couldn't have been better. The cookies, the breakfasts, the jet tub, everything was amazing. I liked that there was an electric water heater in our room for tea and that we all had our own little keys to our rooms! Brian and Linda are the most amazing people. We love them so much, and can't wait to be back!
Staying at the Howarth House was a welcome addition to our weekend away in Fitchburg. We were there for a wedding and the venue was very close to the house, so location definitely couldn't be beat! Brian was very welcoming and accommodating and answered any questions we had. But for the most part, he was thorough in explanations so that we didn't really have too many questions. And guys, THE FOOD IS AMAZING. And guys, the bathroom floors were heated (which I commented on, with enthusiasm, every time I stepped into the bathroom...) If we're ever back in Fitchburg, we will look forward to our next stay at the Howarth House :)
Hosts Brian and Linda were welcoming, warm and discreet. We loved the well appointed bedrooms, living and dining rooms, the sun porch, and the lush lawn and tall trees. It felt like...home. Breakfasts were a royal treat, too. Long live Howarth House!
We were attending a family event in the area and spent three nights at Howarth House. It was perfect! Beautiful house, beautiful property, warm and unobtrusive hosts, fantastic (and big) breakfast! Great location -- felt like we were in a mansion in the woods, even though we were only a block from the Fitchburg State campus. Super quiet, watched birds and chipmunks from the outdoor breakfast porch, and saw a grey fox one night from the doorway! Reservation over the phone was super easy, free wifi (though we were not much tempted to use it), we stayed in the East Room and room A/C kept us cool at night although the weather was warm. Bed was very comfortable. Had a very nice dinner in town based on Linda's recommendations. Brian's "Fire Room" had some fascinating firefighting memorabilia, reflecting his career as a deputy chief.
This was one of the nicest B&B stays we have ever had. on an anniversary trip back to where we used to live, we were delighted to stay at this fine place. Linda and Brian could not have been kinder or more hospitable. the room was well appointed and the breakfasts were truly the best at any B&B we have been to in the past. The warmth and kindness, lovely home and great food has me dreaming to return.
Our son is a Junior at Fitchburg State University, we have been staying with Brian and Linda every time we travel to the area. It is without a doubt the best place to stay in Fitchburg, especially if you are visiting FSU. The blueberry pancakes are outstanding, as is the entire breakfast. Linda always has out fresh baked snacks in the afternoon and evening. The house is warm and welcoming. It is like staying at your favorite Aunt's house. it is one of the best parts of our trip. As B&B's go, Howarth House is the BEST!
We stayed at Howarth House for the 3rd year in a row while visiting family in Fitchburg for 9 days. We have now enjoyed each of the 3 guest rooms. All are spacious and beautifully decorated. Once again, the Belliveau’s made us feel like old friends. Breakfast on the porch or outside on the patio overlooking a gorgeous landscape was a relaxing highlight of each day. The variety of fruits, home baked breads, and full breakfast menu kept our tummies happy until suppertime! We loved exploring the wooded area around the property. Brian even took time to give us a guided tour around the grounds and woods to try to catch a glimpse of a doe and her fawns. We were lucky enough to see the doe while we sipped coffee on the patio! We were invited to join Brian & Linda for wine and great conversation by the fire pit one evening. They are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make all guests feel like royalty! We will return again and again to our home away from home! Sincerely, Tina & Peter
My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night for a mini getaway. Terry was so accommodating with late check in and flexible on check out. The breakfast was awesome. The house is amazing with the best views at a B and B I've ever seen. Thank you Terry!
For my birthday, my boyfriend got us a fall getaway to Ashburnham. It was a first for both of us to stay at a B&B and we didn't know what to expect! Due to the overwhelmingly positive online reviews, my boyfriend decided to make a reservation at the Maguire House and I am so glad he did! Everything about our experience definitely made it a birthday to remember! We stayed in the beautiful Wisteria room. The views were breathtaking (I couldn't stop looking out the window!), the bed was extremely comfortable, and the adjoining bathroom was very convenient. Terry prepared a hearty and delicious breakfast for us each morning, and she and Paul had tons of suggestions for things to do in the area. We specifically went with a goal of hiking- they suggested Mt. Watatic and it was perfect! I cannot say enough good things about our experience! If you enjoy hiking, love fall, or just find yourself in need of a getaway do yourself a favor: go to Ashburbham and stay at the Maguire House! You will be so happy you did.
The Maguires proved exceptionally hospitable, as they exceeded our expectations in basically every aspect of our stay. My girlfriend and I embarked on an early November getaway, in which we were greeted by Terry, a gracious hostess, who provided us with a brief tour of their spectacular colonial estate. The meticulously-kept rooms had breathtaking views and exuded a lovely colonial charm. Terry accommodated us with complimentary tea, coffee, seasonal beer, and wine for the duration of our stay. Our bed in the Wistoria room was very comfortable, and the room (which dated back to the 18th century) evoked a quaint New England vibe. The daily breakfast options consisted of three courses - fruit bowl, baked pastry, and an egg/bacon dish - with each morning offering different options (all of excellent quality). Terry was very flexible in the time in which she would have breakfast prepared for us. Additionally, Terry and her husband, Paul, offered great advice for local accommodations, including the Wachusett brewery and various beautiful hiking trails. My girlfriend and I strongly recommend this place!
My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Howarth House. It is the former home of my husband's great grandfather. It was so exciting to see and enjoy this beautiful piece of family history. Linda and Brian are amazing hosts. The home is gorgeous and food is delicious. We felt right at home there. We will definitely be back. Jackie Howarth
We stayed at The Maguire House when we took our son for his first autumn at Cushing Academy. I was anxious to say the least, Terry was so gracious it made the transition easier. The day would have been a lot harder if we went back to an impersonal hotel room.
Even if this was not a first-class bed and breakfast, the view and the grounds warrant a visit. But it is an outstanding bed-and-breakfast--a beautiful home, tastefully decorated (and not over-kitsched like so many B&Bs), very comfortable bed and high-quality amenities (including a list of local events during the period of our stay), and extremely gracious hosts (even when traffic caused us to arrive much later than anticipated).
My husband and I have terrible luck when it comes to B&B's. We have stayed at several where we've had truly awful experiences. Our stay at Maguire House changed all of that! We stayed here for one night as a quick getaway, and we never wanted to leave. The house is absolutely gorgeous, and Terry made our stay lovely. She was attentive without being intrusive and provided us with everything we could need. The breakfast was absolutely incredible! I don't honestly think I've ever had a better one. When we left, Terry gave us some roses from her garden as an anniversary present. I cannot recommend Maguire House enough. We will definitely go back there often and tell everyone we know!
My wife and I are world travelers. This is the best and most beautiful B&B we've ever experienced in our 43 years together. Worth it for the views alone, but everything about the place is perfect.
We visit family every summer in Fitchburg, and are very happy to have spent the last few visits staying at Brian and Linda's B&B. The rooms are lovely and comfortable, the breakfasts outstanding, and the sitting areas so welcoming. While we enjoyed reading on the covered porch, our teenagers could play in the pool. My husband also stayed there when in the area on a business trip this past spring. We look forward to our stay at Howarth House as much as visiting family every year!
This B&B is truly exquisite from the hosts, to the exceptional breakfasts and the location on the lake. It makes this the best B&B my wife and I have found yet. The history behind the house is also makes this an interesting visit!
