The house is lovely and the staff were friendly. The only downside is it's a little far from the closest metro station (Dupont Circle) if you're dragging a heavy case. But the friendly atmosphere makes up for it. Breakfast was lovely too and they easily accommodated my dietary needs (gluten and lactose free). I highly recommend it.

This charming "White house" in Washington can be recommended! Nice staff, Clean and nice room, good location (near stop for Hop-on Hop-off-busses). Interesting breakfast with very good home-made specialities, all around one table.

Each of our three mornings at the Guest House, chef Kevin prepared a marvelous series of breakfast treats. We enjoyed the company of other guests and ate heartily each day. Highly recommended.

We stayed 5 nights at the American Guest House when I accompanied my husband on a business trip last month. This is a charming and beautiful old building that was built in 1899. The accommodations are well maintained and very comfortable. We were on the top floor in room 403, which is spacious with a sitting area and antique furniture that is both decorative and functional. Be aware that there is no elevator so pick a floor according to your ability to climb stairs. We happily got our exercise by climbing that beautiful staircase. The breakfasts were enjoyable and well prepared by Chef Kevin. Any questions we had, Marcos or Kevin were there to assist us. We would go back to stay at American Guest House in a heartbeat. It is a great place to stay!

If you're looking for a quaint, quiet place to stay in DC that's convenient to everything, American Guest House is the place. I had the luxury of staying in two of their rooms during my stay and both rooms were perfectly comfortable and roomy. I can't say enough about the wonderful gourmet breakfasts! The On-site managers were friendly and helpful when I needed recommendations. I will be staying here again! M.Glatz

Parking is expensive. Breakfast was good but not what I would normally expect. Should have been more substantial . Great location. Safe neighborhood. Lovely girl inn keeper that weekend. Very friendly and helpful.

This B and B is away from the downtown crown but close enough to walk/metro/taxi into the hub. The neighborhood is active and upscale. I like quiet, comfortable, lowkey and unique and AGH it all of that. I would go back next time I'm in DC.

Cosy and clean room. Fresh breakfast. Free WiFi. 10 minuten Walker from metro Dupont Circle. Friendly staff.

Actually I loved everything about the place, except the parking situation. The room was cozy and comfortable. The breakfast was divine! The chef was fun to talk to and the other guests were interesting. My only small complaint is parking. Once I arrive, I park my car and take the convenient Metro - a 10 min. walk to the Red Line at Dupont circle. But parking is a bit of a hassle with the nearest long term lot a block away or so. When lugging stuff for a week long stay, that's a pain. That said, I'll be back with some frequency.

Great location only a 10 minute walk to Dupont Circle Metro, several restaurants less than 10 minutes walk away, 1 mile from the White House about 2 miles from the National Mall and the Smithsonian Museums & Monument, safe upscale residential neighborhood. We appreciated the free WiFi and 24/7 self serve hot beverage and cookies. Breakfast was absolutely delicious every single morning. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was very beautifully decorated...very comfy bed.

Good: such friendly, helpful staff who create a family-like atmosphere, as do the rooms which, while small, are furnished with antiques and are incredibly clean and well-kept. We were offered daily room cleaning, but declined because we didn't need it, and we were clearly told the times for breakfast which was a lovely selection of fruit, a yummy omelette, and other things like muffins and croissants, and juice/coffee/ lots of different teas. Bad: we already knew from TripAdvisor that people had whinged about the creaky stairs (solved by staying on the top floor in room 401) and the smallness of the rooms (we are easy to please and I found it fine and cosy - besides, we weren't there all day).

On a ten day business trip to DC, I really appreciated staying at the American Guest House. Experienced in standard and boring 4star hotels, I had been looking for something different, more humane and cosy. I definitely wasn't disappointed! The two rooms I stayed in were great, the quality of the equipment and the retro feeling of the furniture - special pieces altogether - invites for relaxing moments after busy work days. And the warmth of the place does not only stem from the wooden floors, walls with frames and the beautiful staircase - the manager, Jonathan, and Joseph, made the difference. Extremely helpful and courteous, and real professionals, they are always up for an interesting chat. Finally, let's mention the rich breakfast: a pleasure to start a day like this! For sure, staying at this guesthouse made a difference in my trip... I can only smile when I think about my colleagues who stayed in one of those dusty and anonymous hotels with hundreds of rooms.... Thank you!

This was our first time at a B&B so we did not know what to expect. We were caught up looking around at all the beautiful and ornate woodwork. Nice rooms, very clean and comfortable. The innkeepers were all very nice. We really liked the closeness to DuPont circle...just a couple blocks away.

We were on a two week trip that included the Waldorf in NY City and another luxury hotel in Texas. We spent 4 nights at the American Guest House while in Washington. It was clearly our favorite of all the places we stayed. Considering all aspects from room quality, price, staff kindness, and location, I would choose everytime to stay at the American Guest House. The Inn Keeper is an especially helpful person and we enjoyed the interaction with the other guest at breakfast each morning. When I am in DC, this is my first choice.

Lucia, Claudio, and Jonathan, The best part of my recent stay in DC was my lodging at the American Guest House. The cordial staff, always pleasant smiles, their willingness to provide us with information, and everything else we needed, made our stay a wonderful four days. Your American Guest House will definitely be recommended by us to family, friends, and co-workers. Jonathan, I want to thank you for your delicious breakfasts that you made for us in the morning. What a great way to begin our work days while there.

With breakfast thrown in, this is a superb value for DC. Innkeeper Jonathan was attentive, breakfast was delicious. Drawbacks - not near Metro station; mattress sagged in the middle, making for less than ideal sleep.

The building is lovely and well-kept. Everything was neat and clean and beautiful. The staff was helpful above and beyond the call. From the exceptionally warm and friendly welcome to the beautifully prepared breakfast, the careful attention to my room, and help with arranging my very early cab to the airport, I truly appreciate the diligent service. As a single woman traveling alone, I felt welcome, safe, and respected. I highly recommend American Guest House.

All the positive comments already said about AGH are true. Hospitality, friendliness, cleanliness, willing to help in any way, and breakfast (!!) are far above other locations. Would have stayed longer if rooms were available. Easy to understand why it is so popular and why there are many return customers. Thoroughly enjoyed. Jonathan's breakfasts can't be beat!

I found the American Guest House online when I was looking for a place to stay in DC for under $200 per night. It was conveniently situated halfway between Dupont Circle and the convention hotel. Traveling alone, I reserved the smallest room in the place. And it was small--it didn't even have a closet--but it worked for me. It was extremely clean and the tiny bathroom just shined. Claudio greeted me the first day and showed me around. Jonathan provided a great breakfast the next two days of my stay. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I really liked staying there and will probably stay again.

First time in Washington (and US) for my wife and I and what a treasure we stumbled on. Fantastic impression from the moment you walk in front door. Owners and staff very polite, friendly and helpful, the room had everything one needed and was beautifully decorated and very comfortable bed. Breakfast was fantastic and it was nice to be able to share the time with other guests. Easy walk to all museums all can catch bus outside door or short walk to metro. Ideally located and local restaurants were lovely. Have already recommended to family and friends travelling to Us in 2010.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights. Excellent location, neighborhood, and great company and breakfast (Jonathan cooked eggs to order). The room needs minor decorating and furniture improvement (bad feng shui)

My wife and I stayed in room 403 for two nights and we could not have been more pleased. The room was clean and had all the amenities. Jonathan was a joy to conversate with and he makes a mean cheese omelet! The B&B is within a few minutes walk of Metro bus and rail stations. We would highly recommend The American Guest House to anyone staying in D.C.

unable to find a hotel room at short notice, this little treasure popped up on a Google search. It is cheaper than nearby fancy hotels, yet with beautiful restored rooms, hot breakfast to order, free wifi, comfortable sitting rooms, and friendly hosts. Is now my favored DC lodging!

The American Guest House is a wonderful place to stay. My room was comfortable and quaint and a very restful place to relax at the end of the day. The bedroom and bathroom were very clean. Breakfast was wonderful and included a variety of breads, pastries, cereals, juices and yogurt. Eggs were made or order and a fruit cup was provided. I will definitely stay here again.

My friend and I came to DC to tour and see the city. We're in are early twenties so didn't want to spend to much but needed a safe area. The American Guest House was perfect. It's in a great location and everyone is so friendly! The breakfast was great and the rooms and decor were beautiful and unique. We really did feel at home and it worked out perfectly for us :)

Even though we stayed at the American Guest House for only one night, everything was great; the location is perfect, loved the house, the beds were comfortable, the bathrooms sparkling white, and our rooms although not the largest offered enough space. As you enter the house, the stunning woodwork and staircase greets you and to the right there is a living room that invites you to relax and read a book. It was very well decorated, and the doors were beautiful -- the old American prints and paintings bring you back in time. Breakfast was filling with a variety served in one big dining room table by Jonathan whom was very helpful and polite. It was nice to be able to talk with the other guests in a comfortable atmosphere. The location was great; one mile from the White house, plenty of dining options on Connecticut Ave. and Georgetown is not far at all. We will definitely make American Guest House our preferred accommodation for when we visit D.C. again.

On my recent visit to DC, I stayed at the American Guest House and truly enjoyed it. It was so clean and quiet. The staff were friendly, polite, and helpful. I felt well-cared for. It was located close to my conference hotel, the Wardman Park Marriott, about a 15minute by foot. I walked it a couple of times but decided it was too far after a hard day of workshops. Never mind though-- it was around USD 5 for taxi fare--and I didn't have to wait more than 2-3 minutes for a cab to come by.

We had a lovely and affordable stay at the AGH. The staff was caring, helpful, warm, and personable. The B&B provided us with everything we needed for our 2 night stay. AGH is EXTREMELY clean, our room had a comfortable bed, and is in walking distance from the Dupont Metro. We plan on staying at AGH when we visit again. Incidentally, I have already recommended AGH to some on my friends. Overall: A delightful experience

My room was comfortable, spacious and quiet. The service was excellent and very inconspicuous. Breakfast each morning was a delightful pleasure; the food was well-prepared, fresh, and afforded a very nice variety. The hosts are gracious and friendly. I will stay here when I next visit Washington, D.C.

My daughter, her friend and I stayed at the American Guest House for 3 days over the July 4th weekend. it was truly a wonderful B&B with incredibly friendly staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds, and delicious breakfast. Metro station was a good hike away, but the path between the Metro and B&B went thru the shopping district & restaurant area so you hardly noticed the time it took.

This wonderfully quiet B&B is super convenient to the DuPont Metro (and right on bus line #42 if you don't want to walk at all). Our large room on the 4th floor gave us lots of exercise since there is no elevator. Breakfast was abundant, with cooked to order offerings, fruit cup, pastries, bagels, yogurt, etc. Jonathan was extremely helpful and multi-tasked with ease. We will stay here again!

I reported a 'short' in the alarm clock such that it make electric signals throughout the first night until I unplug it. Reported it 3 days in a row and no one ever checked it, although they said they would. Also, my cell phone would not work in 203, but would work down stairs. Same for laptop WiFi. But I will be back. I like the accommodations and price.

My husband and I stayed here for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was lovely, very clean and bright; the breakfast was enormous and set us up for the day. The location of this place is ideal for sightseeing as the Metro is a short walk and the bus from the front door takes you right to the White House!

I stayed here four nights and it was lovely - never saw a soul, even at breakfast, although it was a full house. The room was small but very comfortable, there is a small park up the street, and I loved the place. The metro was easy to walk to and breakfast was fine.
