Tucked into the Sonoma Valley hamlet of Glen Ellen, Gaige House + Ryokan feels like a secret hideaway. Of course, it’s not really a secret; Gaige House + Ryokan is regularly recommended in Michelin and other guides, and has been listed repeatedly in Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List of the top hotels in the world. An elegant blend of vintage and contemporary, the inn features 23 thoughtfully appointed guestrooms with a modern, Asian flair. The verdant, secluded setting along Calbaza Creek includes an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and is accented with delightful surprises in hidden spots: a hammock shaded with ancient oaks, a miniature pagoda in a rock garden, a gurgling fountain. All guests enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet and afternoon wine and cheese tasting as well as refreshing green tea at check-in, house-baked matcha cookies, after-dinner sake alongside the port and sherry, and use of the inn’s outdoor meditation deck, sun deck and moon deck. The spa treatment menu has been expanded to include new massages, with either lemongrass or lavender infusions. Guests staying in Gaige House + Ryokan’s Zen Suites discover additional enhancements found in classic ryokans, such as the use of yukata robes, geta and zori slippers, in-suite sake, in-suite Japanese cast iron tea service, mochi ice cream, and Bose sound systems with Zen-influenced CD music. Zen Suites also offer deep granite Japanese soaking tubs and private rock gardens.

We couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate a birthday. Very romantic. Rooms and service are over the top.

Lovely upgrade to the suites. Zen indeed! The staff was lovely overall, but we had a blip with the housekeeping staff which they hopefully addressed. We will be back.

The stay was cozy and gave a warm hoospitable feeling. Freshly made cookies were offered upon check-in and you can enjoy drinks such as sake, wine, water, and soda. The people working were kind and we were able to get our room early. We stayed in the room with the queen bed and chocolates were left on the bed for us. My fiancée was extremely happy with all the warmth. The fireplace for the bedroom and a heater for the bathroom. Heat insulates very well. The shower is big and has two shower heads. You get cheese and crackers along with white or red wine from a local winery around 5 pm and the next morning you get the buffet styled breakfast. The quiche was delightful and the orange juice was freshly squeezed! Overall, I would come back and try the larger rooms with a private bathtub. Very nice getaway for a weekend and not too far from Napa and Sonoma if you want to go there.

Too many misses to make us want to return to Gaige House: 1. No one let us know in advance that there would be construction outside the room we reserved. 2. BUT, we were offered (and accepted) a nice alternative where the gas fire place was already heating up the room. 3. Appreciate the Japanese decor and amenities, but navigating especially the entry space is challenging: outdoor shoes, keys, indoor Zori sandals and socks, bathroom door and closet intersect immediatelyinside the "front" door. 4. Complimentary Mochi and Sake in the fridge ;-) 5. Complimentary house made cookies, Sake, Port, Coffee and Tea in the Main Building ;-) 6. The heat in the room didn't work unless the thermostat was set to 75F (figured this out too late.) 7. Got "skunked" by a... skunk outside or under our room both nights. 8. Complimentary breakfast should be sexier for the price. (See The Drisco Hotel's in S.F.) 9. Interior closet lighting and exterior lights brighten the interior space at night, so if you like to sleep in the dark... Dunno - really wanted to like it, but don't think we'll go back.

My wife and I have very stressful jobs, so when we travel we try to stay at places where there is an air of tranquility. This has become one of our favorite getaway places to stay in wine country. Very quiet and peaceful and a short drive to our favorite wineries in Napa and Sonoma . The rooms and grounds are beautiful, but they do need a little updating which it appears they've started working on, but nothing that would make you regret staying. The room service is pristine and leave your room perfect each day. The Gaige House is also close to a very nice market where you can purchase deli items and groceries for your stay. We typically stay at places like The Clift Hotel and the W when we travel so that should give you an idea of the quality we look for when we get away and the Gaige House is definitely in that category. I would absolutely recommend the Gaige House.

Beautiful ryokan-style room. Great thoughtful touches throughout. Three quibbles: provide a Nespresso machine, a Japanese toilet and reupholster the two tired looking loveseats by the fireplace. Also, we hurried back from our event so that we could have a glass of port together before nine but all was shut down by 8:30.

The gaige House was such a beautiful and romantic place to stay in Sonoma!!! They host a wine and cheese reception every night at 5pm, have cookies available all the time and provide a full cooked daily breakfast!! We were there for my husband's 50th birthday and had booked a studio suite. Upon checking we found out we were upgraded to the zen suite!!! Such a beautiful romantic suite complete with a shower for two, huge soaking tub, 2 patios and a warm fireplace!!!
