A marvelous step back in time.... out of this world into a more gracious, and classy time, and place. Room clean, quiet, charming, outstanding bed, and pillows, Owner, Julie, multi-talented.....efficient, friendly, dramatic, and funny. Makes a great breakfast. Neighborhood beautiful, and safe. Outside ambience charming, and inviting. Perfect for romance.....we will be back as often as possible.

My stay at The Bissell House was unforgetable. The attention to detail was impecable. I had such a delightful stay and would go back again.

My wife and I love this place. The service/management was very hospitable and kind to us. The food was excellent. Great location, one of my favorite spots in Pasadena with plenty of tress and easy access into Old Town Pasadena. The antiquity, history, cleanliness, and charm of the house, including our room, made this the most enjoyable Victorian B&B I've stayed at. In addition, some research will show that the cost is very reasonable, especially with the unique quality you get at The Bissell House. We highly recommend it and look forward to our next stay.

Every aspect of our stay at the Bissell House was outstanding. We look forward to our next opportunity to stay with them again. The pool was a real plus, too!

My husband and I had a great stay at the bissel house. Great service, outstanding food and accomadations. Centrally located too. Meaning down the street from down town Pasadena, 6 min from the rose bowl and 20 min from Hollywood. We loved out stay! Look forward to staying again :) thank you so much!

The seating for breakfast was great, the conversation was fun! the tea service adn evening dessert outstanding and the proximity to restaurants was very good. Must say, for my Mom's 77th birthday and FIRST B&B experience, it could not have been better....and the Pasadena wild parrots cracked us up.

The location was perfect. Even though it is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, all you have to do is drive five minutes and you are in downtown Pasadena! The actual structure and rooms are charming. The service was top rate (our hosts were warm and gregarious) and the breakfast was delicious!

I fell in love with the Bissell house the moment I turned into the driveway!! I often try to stake out unique places when in town for meetings as they usually offer a better nights sleep then the convention type hotels; Bissell House did not disappoint!!! The rooms and ambiance of the house was beyond my expectations and I was sorely upset with myself for not allowing more time to enjoy my stay. the minute I stepped out from my car I was greeted by a young man who promptly took my bags and left them up in my room for me while the innkeeper showed me around and gave me the key. Unfortunatley I had to run back out as I had an evening meeting to attend but when I returned, I found fresh orange brownies(YUM), and all the makings for tea. My favorite part of the stay was walking around the old home in my PJ's looking at the photos and books in the library before bed. OH and the bed was very comfy!! Ive told all my best girlfriends and my husband that we HAVE to go back...its' the perfect romantic getaway, girlfriend get together place or just to step back in time solo. I'm seriously looking at what weekend I can return and for what occasion!!! Internet in my room was slow but I decided to put away my computer and just enjoy what the Bissell house had in mind for me....Peace, Tranquility and an incredible nights sleep!!! ~GeNelle McIlwain San Clemente

I had a 5 night stay in their smallest, yest coziest room while visiting my daughter who lives nearby, but because it is LA, they only have a studio apt. I was treated so sweetly and with much care. The breakfasts were outstanding and lasts all day! The victorian era is honored here. I will absolutely stay again. Thank you for a lovely place to visit my girl.

The Bissell House provides a charming, peaceful retreat from the normal, busy routine of our everyday lives. It has always been an outstanding experience (great food, great people - guests and staff, and a great atmosphere). This last visit they even exceeded our expectations with a Happy Anniversary sign and a dessert course at breakfast.

The clicker on this site didn't work properly and didn't allow me to check "Outstanding" for Rooms, Service and Onsite Dining (breakfast only). However, in all thèse respects the Bissell House in Pasadena, CA is amazing. Our room and our friends' were gorgeous, with the most enchanting Victorian appointments, like the whole downstairs. Breakfasts were magical - souffles, croissants, lovely fruit dishes, way more than anyone could eat. Coffee, tea and cakes always available in the inviting living room (along with a well tuned grand piano). And sisters Juli and Janet were ever ready to be helpful. The surrounding gardens and neighborhood--fragrant with jasmine, roses, jacaranda and magnolia trees everywhere--are divine. A real find!

We had a marvelous stay at the Bissell House on March 31st. I enjoyed chatting with Janet and other guests. Learning the history of the area and the house itself was delightful. Sleeping in the same house the Einstein slept in was fun.

The house is charming. The public rooms afford many places to relax, read, snack. The outdoor pool area was also great for reading and relaxing.

A most relaxing stay in this quiet and charming historic house set in the wonderful neighbourhood of South Pasadena (just across the border from Pasadena). Attention to detail is key and no stone is left unturned. Good access to LAX and easy to find off local freeways. Excellent local restaurants and attractions.

We celebrated our anniversary on short notice, getting in on a cancellation. The innkeeper was very informative and a great hostess. We were able to walk the neighborhoods to get to nice dining on foot and enjoyed the grand old homes nearby in the process. The homemade quiche and croissant breakfast was superb and ready on time. The plumbing in the old bathtubs is interesting, but we were instructed how to run the shower and it worked just fine. I would highly recommend this B and B to anyone.

This is the second time we have stayed here. Juli, the owner, is exceptionally friendly and makes a great breakfast. The rooms are beautifully decorated and one feels definitely like a member of the last century's high society. Grounds are lush, pool looks inviting although we did not use it, and location is great if you are looking for a place to stay in this part of Los Angeles. Highly recommend.

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to stay at Bissell House before my acupuncture licensing exam. It was the perfect place to relax and get a good night's sleep before this major life experience! Juli was so accommodating! It was a bit chilly this time of year and she lit the fireplace to keep the tea room cozy. I even brought take-out for dinner back just to sit by the fire. Juli graciously rose early to prepare an early breakfast for me prior to my exam. My room was warm, cozy, quiet, and had a view of the wonderful pool area plus a nice sitting area so I could do some light review prior to the exam. And, having the sweet poodle Duke around was so relaxing...such a sweetie! I felt relaxed and ready for my big exam. I will return to spend more time and celebrate passing my exam! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality! Cassandra

It says a lot when 11 people 9 of them strangers, come down to a beautiful breakfast with big smiles and stories of how great they slept !! We all talked and laughed and went on our separate journeys. Looking forward to a second visit in summer to see the grounds in full bloom. Thank You !!

I work for Marriott, but couldn't find a room for my recent stay so I decided to try this B&B. What a wonderful experience! Juli;s hospitality was first class, and the accommodations were wonderful. My only regret is that I checked in late and had to leave early the next morning, so I couldn't take advantage of all that this beautiful home had to offer. Have already recommended it to several friends/relatives.

My husband and I visited Pasadena to see our first grandchild! The gals at the Bissell House were so welcoming! The room was quiet, comfortable and clean. I stayed at this B &B for a weekend getaway. The caretakers are friendly and strive to provide excellent service. I disliked the the host chose to share least three "you would not believe the guests we get .." Stories before I reached the room as it left me with a negative feeling. I heard about a European guest who didn't want to pay, guests who turn the hot water on too roughly damaging the faucet, etc. The host's dog was friendly and breakfast plentiful and delicious. The house is located in a beautiful neighborhood, close to nice shops and dining. The grounds and rooms are furnished to resemble a Victorian style. I perceived things in need of some maitenance or updating as the room, especially carpeting, felt a bit unclean. Overall, I enjoyed my stay, but would not necessarily return as the house's perceived lack of cleanliness and the hosts' attitude towards guests outweighed the charme of the romantic ambience for me.

I was travelling alone to visit young relatives living in the area. I was correct in thinking that Bissell House Bed and Breakfast would be great for me, a really positive experience. I stayed five nights, Victoria's room had an extremely comfortable bed and lovely bathroom and shower. The little study overlooking the pool was a delightful place to sit and I was encouraged to make use of all the communal areas. Juli went out of her way to answer any questions about my local excursions and I received a free ticket to a world class chamber concert by Camerata Pacifica that was being held in Downtown LA on my second evening. I feel the description on the web site is a very accurate one and highly recommend a visit to Bissell house if you wish to feel at home, either engage with other guests or remain private and like to escape the generic predictable and impersonal modern hotels. Breakfast will sustain you through most of the day and is varied and delicious.

My husband and I stayed at the Bissell House after searching online for accommodations while traveling in the area. We were visiting friends and didn't want to stay in the big corporate hotels. The Bissell House is a breath of fresh air when it comes to providing an exceptional experience. When we checked in, we were greeted and shown around most thoroughly. Our room was so nice that I actually didn't want to leave when it came to visiting our friends. The room was beautifully appointed with the most luxurious sheets! I felt like we had stepped back in time while retaining all the modern conveniences. Every detail was finely considered. The bed was super comfortable, the robes soft and thick, the bathtub to die for. My big regret was that we didn't have enough time there. The sitting room beckoned, a book and some tea from the lovely afternoon layout would have been delightful. Unfortunately, we had to leave early the next morning and missed the formal breakfast. We did have the continental breakfast which was more than sufficient. Everything we needed to get on with our day, especially really good coffee. I highly recommend a stay at Bissell House. Just plan having some extra time to spend there enjoying the facilities.

The Bissell House is one of the most comfortable establishment we have had the pleasure to enjoy! The open areas were very inviting and a table was set with beverages and treats for late afternoon in the spacious livingroom with the fireplace lit for added charm. I would recommend this property highly and hope to return soon.

We had a great stay at Bissell for Thanksgiving. The inn keeper was very hospitable and made us feel right at home. The homemade hearty breakfast was excellent. The common areas as well as the pool area was very nice and great for lounging the day away. The rooms were alright (and sunny), though the decor was perhaps a little too "Victorian-museum-like" for our tastes.

A recent business trip to Caltech had me in a pinch to find a place to stay that wasn't $350-$425/night, or to find a id tier hotel chain that had a room. I am so glad that I found the Bissel house. It was easy to find, close to Caltech and downtown Pasedena. The service was fantastic and the owners were very accommodating with travel schedule changes. The house was beautiful, charming and very clean. The food was great, and the atmosphere even better! If you are looking for a great B&B in Pasadena, you will find at the Bissel House!

We felt welcome immediately--and what a lovely place! The gardens sported a rose trellised brick walkway leading to the ample, comfortable covered porch. To our delight, various teas and tea things were already laid out with a home-made pumpkin cake. Our room--English Holiday--was very quiet and comfortable with a newly-renovated bathroom with tiled walk-in shower. Morning coffee before breakfast and a complete plated breakfast served in a formal dining room. Lovely!

I was lucky to spend a weekend at the Bissell House for a wedding in Pasadena and I only have the best things to say about it. The house is outstandingly beautiful, the area quiet but easy to reach from the highway. The interior is just lovely, with so much details and cosiness. I loved the old charm of the house, the room and the decoration. The team was super flexibel with arrival times and helped me where they could. Lively peoole! The other guests I met at breakfast at the big dining table which I love because you get to meet thise lovely people. The pool outside is just huge and exactly what I needed. Chilled in the sun, took a swim, it was just paradise. If you are in the area, please don't hesitate to book! It's a home away from home. Don't miss it!

Overall vibe of the house was VERY VERY pleasant. I enjoyed casual but curated atmosphere. The little snack table that is always up in the sitting room is wonderful. The tea available was GREAT. The house is in fair shape and a lovely example of its time, but some sprucing up needed. Some paint peeling in the bathroom, shades in poor condition and windows have no screens. Asthmatic with sensitivity to dust, I couldn't use topmost bedding. Sheets were clean, high quality. Bathroom and shower excellent shape, plumbing working great. Pool very refreshing in heat, but cold in more temperate weather. Hot tub cold. Had Continental breakfast day 1 -full breakfast service too late 4 me. Bread for toasting was stale. Wanted full breakfast second day, but coffee was so bad I had to go out and find a decent cup. The quality of the coffee and continental breakfast dissuaded me from staying for full breakfast. B&B breakfast should be special, even continental breakfast. At least bakery-fresh bread and something a bit prepared,—nice fruit salad or crockpot of oatmeal. Put breakfast on earlier during week. You've got the tea down pat. Now fix your coffee. It was truly bad. And the cups offered to serve it were far too small. A great coffee in a great big ceramic cup is how a good day starts. Get your coffee right and you can serve the simplest things next to it and satisfy the customer. Overall not a bad stay, but not a great one. Coffee lovers, bring your own just in case they don't fix it.
We are more than delighted this guest found a great deal to like and appreciate about our property. A note about our coffee: we realize that for some, morning coffee is a vital kick-starter to their day. We serve fresh brewed coffee every morning. In addition, we have a Nespresso coffee machine with individual pods. We are truly sorry that this guest experienced a bad cup of coffee. We've been in business nearly 10 years and this is most assuredly not the norm, an oversight or intentional. Next time, please communicate with us. We make available the use of three different sized mugs for our coffee and tea service. When breakdowns like this occur, we find it to be more mutually beneficial for our guests to approach us in real time where we can easily remedy a situation such as this would have been. We apologize to those for whom this is a problem but we will never install screens, as they will ruin the aesthetic of our historic property. We installed brand new Hunter Douglas shades throughout the house in every room less than a year ago but will inspect them to see if we can determine what gave the impression they were in "poor condition". So as not to mislead future or returning guests, we don't advertise or offer the use of a hot tub. Guests who stay with us should be prepared for this. Finally, please know that make every ongoing effort and attempt to maintain the property. The list is long and the progress measured according to our ability at any given moment. We hope we have addressed most of the concerns listed in this guest's review and would welcome them to stay with us again in the future.

So rare to find this combination of amenities for this price. Lovely home, free parking, delicious breakfast, pool, wifi, Time Warner HD cable television, accommodating staff , all located very near several freeway exits. Very quiet and private, the neighborhood on Millionaire's Row is a delight. There is a gas station just down the block. Everything is at your fingertips. The staff took great care of me. This is my new home when visiting. ,

A quirky old house of historical interest. If you are happy with the Victorian plumbing (yes it works, but may be unfamiliar), this is a delightful place to stay.

This time we were in Victoria's Room; the last two times we were in the English Holiday room. Victoria's was quite a bit smaller, but certainly had character. I had to be careful moving next to the bed on the curtain side, since there was barely enough room to make it through, and I had to be careful not to step on the curtains. I have never been in a B&B that had no many electrical outlets (three in the small bathroom alone, two of which were GFI controls). The bed was really comfortable. The private enclosed veranda/porch/retreat was neat, and had a great view of the pool. Of course, the innkeepers were very friendly, approachable, everything was impeccably clean, and the treats in the front room when we got in the evening were great. The breakfasts were superb, as they have been every single day we stayed at the Bissell House. I should have asked if they cooked those superb and fresh croissants there or had found a great local bakery we could frequent. Next time we will try yet another room.

The addition of new, energetic, personable and talented staff added immeasurably to our third stay. Since a complete update of such an enormous old house would cost a fortune, I think the management should invest in new fluffy towels. The breakfasts were huge and delicious, the pool was just the right temperature and we will definitely visit again.

The Bissell House was a lovely home back in the day; however, it needs some renovation to bring it up to standards. Paint peeling on windows, old bathtub with stains, etc. The interior was "tired" looking. We expected more from a B&B in South Pasadena in this price range

very noisy air conditioner and noisy room right on the busy street. mosquito bites when sat outside at night breakfast was lovely but my H wished for some meat and I wished it was earlier. it would have been nice to have coffee earlier at least. wonderful place overall and lovely staff.
Thank you for staying with us, we are glad to hear you think our place is wonderful overall and the staff is lovely. We are sorry you experienced a noisy a/c. It would help us if you would let us know which room you experienced this in so that we can remedy it. We service them routinely. Meanwhile, we will attempt to discover the source on our own so we can schedule any necessary additional maintenance. We certainly understand about and are sorry you missed the coffee! Please note for future reference, not only do we have a Nespresso Machine, but our coffee (and tea) is available any time you rise as we prep it the night before for this very purpose. We share this information with our guests upon arrival and it is posted in the foyer for late check ins or guests too rushed to allow us the opportunity when they arrive. In addition, the chef arrives between 6:30am-7am every morning and turns it to brew if a guest hasn't already done so. We advertise our breakfasts (along with photos) as being lacto-ovo vegetarian (eggs and dairy no meat) on our website in an attempt to manage expectations. Finally, as we are an urban inn, and not rural, there will be some street noise, which is why we provide "white noise" machines in our bedrooms for our light sleepers. Oh and we had heard reports of mosquitos being on the rise in California. Please note our pool is maintained regularly and the city health officials travel throughout the area weekly treating free-standing sources of water. Even identifying potential breeding grounds from helicopters! Thankfully, there have been no known cases of West Nile Virus in the Pasadena Area to date, however we do recommend either long sleeved wear or bug repellant, or both, for added measure. Hopefully, I have addressed all your concerns and look forward to a return visit. Don't hesitate to contact me directly in the future so we can address them during your stay to the best of our ability.

We stayed at the Bissell House when we had to travel from San Diego to L.A. on business and did not want to make the drive twice in one day. Chose the Bissell House for its proximity to the city and value. Arrived late, but our room was ready and we were greeted at the door. The room was adorable, very clean, lovely linens and comfortable bed. The room was small but made up for its size in charm. The next morning we went down for the seated breakfast. Expresso was made to order, the delicious quiche was accompanied by fresh fruit and scones. We shared our meal with two other couples, and had such lovely conversation with them. The grounds are beautiful. I would like to come back here and do a few tourist things in L.A., and spend a little more time at the House. I would definately come back here for the hospitality and charm.

A very charming, quiet, and delightful place to stay that is very centrally located. Rooms were very clean and property was well maintained. Loved that it was near shopping, restaurants, museums, Rose bowl etc. Only draw back is there are stairs to get to the rooms, so take that in mind.

We have stayed at The Bissell House two times now and have fallen in love with Victoria's Room. It is small and just perfect for a couple. The enclosed reading porch that overlooks the pool is perfect for opening a window to catch the early morning and afternoon breezes. We even used the small desk to have an evening dinner together. The morning breakfast (both times) has been FABULOUS. The sisters who call themselves the "innkeepers" are delightful and really take care to make the home comfortable. There is a delightful living room that has coffee tea and homemade goodies. The pool area is restful; however, the pool is cold as it is not heated. When the roses are in bloom in the garden, the aroma lingers. The location is easy access to the freeway or downtown Pasadena, or the surrounding area. Disneyland is a short 45 minutes. My husband and I spent the night at The Bissell House on brief trip to the L.A. area. It was a warm, friendly home filled with lovely antiques, interesting people and a comfortable "be at home" ambiance. We highly recommend The Bissell House. :-)

The Bissell House is a beautiful Arts and Crafts Victorian home with lovely gardens, porch and pool area. The scent of orange blossoms is everywhere, and the neighborhood is beautiful. It's near major highways and within walking distance of the Metro a lovely commercial area with fine restaurants and shops. The inn keepers are warm and welcoming, and you'll think about the breakfasts for weeks to come. I can't recommend this place highly enough!

It's unbelievable in the heart of the hustle and bustle of LA there is such a treasure trove hidden away to give you a peace of mind. The facility is old, so don't expect amazing shower heads and state of the art Jacuzzi. On the other hand, it's a great place to enjoy a change of pace and actually smell the flowers. The innkeeper was very accommodating in letting me check in earlier to drop off my luggage. Very charming place to stay. The Garden Room is spacious and extravagant for just two people.

We only stayed for a couple of days. The grounds and garden are very nice. The interior of the house could use a little TLC. Our room was adequate. The breakfasts were very nice. My only real complait was the extra romantic package that I purchased. The flowers were mediocre, the chocloate cake tasted like a cold molten chocolate cake and the champagne was an almond flavored champagne. Not something that I would have serve my worst enemy. A dry or demi-sec California sparkling wine might have been a better chioce.
Thank you for posting your candid review. I was completely unaware that one of our staff failed to heat the chocolate molten lava cake for this guest until reading this review. We refunded the cost of the romantic package in full immediately AND discontinued advertising the package altogether to prevent it from every happening in the future. This is the first and only time this has occurred and we apologize profoundly for the inexcusable oversight. As to the Almond champagne, again, problem solved. Discontinued. This is also the first time we have received a complaint regarding it. In fact, other guests have been pleasantly surprised by it. It is from a local southern California winery. We apologize, we did not set out to intentionally disappointment in the selecting of it. Finally, we can't promise the house will be perfect next time you come but we'll aim to get close. The house is approaching 130 years in age and the TLC aspect is an ongoing work in progress both physically and financially. We can't thank you enough for reserving a future stay with us in spite of these disappointments. We work hard to earn and maintain repeat business, so this means a lot, as you could have easily never returned under the circumstances. Thank you!

We had an opportunity for a weekend getaway and chose Bissell House based on their advertisement in the Camerata Pacifica program. It was, for the most part, a delightful experience. Rooms are comfortable and quiet - and even the smallest room, despite its quirks, has a beguiling quaintness with the mini porch/sunroom. The overall ambience is great - a nice library, sitting room with a nice fire, tea available any time. The afternoon desserts, ranging from chocolate chip cookies to lemon cake, were quite good. Weekend breakfasts are also quite nice. Ours included a frittata, roasted potatoes, fresh fruit (artfully cut and arranged), and muffins. We had a bit of a problem contacting someone after hours when we had a problem with our room, but all was made right the next day, and the owners have assured us that the after hours contact issue has now been corrected..

The Bissell House is a beautiful, comfortable house with every amenity but with an old fashioned hospitality. It is perfectly located for every experience within LA and its surroundings. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

Great location, beautiful property, fantastic room...a very positive experience overall. I did think it was a tad overpriced and the breakfast was disappointing - two scrambled eggs, one croissant, and some yogurt. This was our first bed and breakfast experience in the Pasadena area. We would definitely come back but will probably want to try some other places in the area first

We loved the personalized service at the Bissell House. The ground floor rooms were perfect for hanging out and talking. We had a catered dinner at the house and it was a wonderful and relaxing event. The house is gorgeous.

This time I was in the English Holiday room, spacious, very comfortable. large, spotless and charming shower & bathroom for a B&B. Very relaxing. There were great folks to visit with at breakfast, but I never heard or saw anyone after that, perfectly quiet in the house. a small amount of traffic noise, but less than I had in Hamilton New Hampshire in their historic village! Walked to Arlington Garden, a unique native California garden, very interesting to walk near the Bissell House. Sent my friend to stay there the next week on her visit from Florida.

Bissell House is lovingly appointed, and the staff are utterly cheerful, and go beyond the requirements of good hosts: I made a reservation for the incorrect night, and we were cheerfully received on the correct night, with no quilt trip or charges -- though I would have understood completely had they done this. The location is on a very busy street in South Pasadena, so there is road noise, but it beautiful and restful, and close to so many wonderful things, like Huntington Gardens. Thank you so much.

The Bissell house has charming atmosphere. The dining and living rooms are spacious and comfortable. The location is great and the rates are very reasonable. However, the plumbing needs to be upgraded as taking a bath or shower is a challenge. Overall, the stay at the Bissell House was very nice.

We hope to be able to stay there again!!!

My wife and I recently stayed at the Bissell House Bed and Breakfast for the 2014 BCS National Championship game. The location of the Bissell House is easy and convenient from LAX, as well as all the attractions in LA and Pasadena. The house and the surrounding neighborhood was absolutely gorgeous and the room was clean and bed comfortable. The breakfast was great and the afternoon tea and cake was extremely good. Our hostess, Julie, was very friendly, kind, warm, and accommodating. I would recommend the Bissell House to anyone visiting the Pasadena or LA area.

Our house had broken a pipe on the second floor and flooded the house on my husbsnd's 60th birthday, so we needed to spend the night some where and we called the Bissell House and they had room! We were greeted with a wonderful tour of the house and several wonderful stories. We had our choice of several rooms that evening and after viewing each, we selected the Pronce Albert room with a wonderful claw tub, comfortable side chairs and beautiful decorations. Fresh pumpkin pie was in the downstairs with a large selection of teas. The next morning we were served a wonderful breakfast at a beautifully decorated table, cheerfully served and with delightful conversation from additional guests. While check out was at 10, we were told to stay as long as we wanted so we relaxed in the sun filled library, enjoying our coffee and tea. No hotel stay would ever match this experience, especially since everyone did all they could to make us forget what had happened at home and help us celebrate my husbsnd's birthday! Will come back often!

My time and money was very well spent on this wonderful weekend getaway! The food was excellent and the decor kept true to the period in which the home was built. It's a charming and quaint home and I highly recommend rating there!

We had a delightful time at the Bissell House except for two small problems: 1. We ran out of toilet paper and there was not a spare roll. 2. My car was covered with hard water spots left over from the sprinkler system which "watered" my car even when parked in the designated location.

Nothing really stood out, so we felt the price was on the high-side. It is in a nice location, the room was ample size, and the food was good.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am disappointed to hear nothing stood out for you as most of our guests say they enjoy the "setting" combined with "old world charm and unique historic features." Is there anything in particular we can work on to make the guest experience better? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I am happy to know you enjoyed the food, room size and location. I hope you will think of the Bissell House in the future for any accommodations you may need.

I so enjoyed my stay at the Bissell House B&B. The room was comfortable, as was the bed. The grounds were a delight and the 'sisters' were so accomodating. Even the cook, Roxanne, went out of her way to attend to my food allergies and make my breakfast something to look forward to in the mornings. I would stay again.

My daughter, sister and I spent two nights at the end of September at the Bissell House and had the most delightful time. The house is charming, the rooms are comfortable and functional as well as beautifully decorated. The staff was helpful in every respect. We enjoyed long talks on the beautiful front porch drinking wine and telling stories, strolled through the beautiful neighborhood of gorgeous homes, enjoyed a wonderful English tea at a local tea house, visited museums, and enjoyed fine dining in Old Towne. We've decided to make it a yearly gathering it was so wonderful, and there is so much left to do and see in South Pasadena. Enjoy, Alene

My daughter and I were visiting Occidental College the Eagle Rock area of LA. The school recommended Bissell House on the list of nearby accommodations. The Bissell House is beautiful, has lovely antique pieces and is well maintained by Janet and her family. The common areas are spacious and comfortable and pool a nice plus. The neighborhood is lovely and safe and the house is a pleasant walk from the restaurant area. The many Pasadena attractions are a quick cab ride. With all of this the best part of the stay was the great people we met including a fabulous young singer who just signed a record deal and entertained us by playing the Bissell House piano and singing; and, Janet who knew I loved historic homes and was kind enough to drive me around South Pasadena and Old Town and point out the sights. If my daughter chooses Occidental, Bissell House will be my home away from home when I visit.

Our family had a great stay at Bissell House for Labor Day weekend. We stayed in the Master Bedroom. It was a great size for the 3 of us. The rooms were delightful and comfortable. The rooms were nicely air conditioned as this weekend was extremely hot. We enjoyed the delicious breakfasts each morning. The house was clean and the owners were friendly and helpful. Our son enjoyed his time as he had his own twin bed in the master bedroom and he also enjoyed the pool which was relaxing to spend time swimming or just lounging by. We will be back!

Bissell House is a home away from my home. From the first step I took on the property I knew I was in the right place. I was looking for a place that was close to home but felt far removed...almost as though I was in a different state. I love the breakfast that was included and the way the dining room table is set, it really made me feel like I was being catered to. This is the jewel I found that will always be a part of my get away when I just need to unwind and be treated like royalty.

Nice one night stay in mid-August. We stayed in the Rose Room right at the top of the house. Smaller room but it was fine. Great bed. Did not get a chance to use the pool but it was very clean and looked like a great dip. Breakfast was good but we would suggest not opting for the grab and go breakfast as it is limited. Local dinner was a pick up from Radhika which we enjoyed.

It is is a prime location in Pasadena - 10 minutes to Old Town Pasadena, 10 minutes to The Rose Bowl - So much history in this home - if you want some ambiance and a leisurely stay...this is it... We were in the Garden Room (3rd floor) with the Jacuzzi tub...awesome. Enjoy!!

My boyfriend and I spontaneously decided to take a local mini-vacation and found The Bissell House on CABBI.com - considering we booked the day of, $199 was a pretty sweet deal. We had no idea what to expect, had never been to a B&B before, and were blown away! The home is beautiful, clean, and full of history. You can tell it's an old home, but it is maintained very well by the lovely landlord. There was afternoon tea with cake when we arrived, and the English Holiday room was quaint, comfortable, and spotless. We reserved our breakfast spots when we arrived, and although we were late coming down the next morning, we were served some pretty delicious quiche, sweet potatoes, fruit, and coffee cake. I seriously cannot wait for an excuse to stay at the Bissell House again!
4.4 on July 28, 2013
The Bissell house was a wonderful walk back in time. The house had many antique furnishings of the period, and the home offered modern conveniences without completely taking away from the original flavor. The bathtub/shower was unique along with many other architectural details. The extra touches with the evening tea/cake was nice and the pool was a delight, tucked away behind the street and surrounded by tropical flowers. The temperature was wonderful, though we arrived after 8 so could not try it out in the evening. I only wish we had more time for our stay. The B&B is in a well-to-do quiet neighborhood that we enjoyed strolling through. While our Rose room was not a large room, it added to the coziness. We were happy that the A/C worked well on the third floor, as we were there on a warm July day. The visit was shortened by car trouble, but worth the stay. Be sure to let the owners know if you arrive unexpectedtly late, as we did, so that arrangements can be made to gain entry to the house. The rooms are all conveniently labeled. It was a good value for the money and I hope to return some day.

My stay was too brief for such a lovely destination. I stayed in the Garden Room, which, like all of the public rooms, was both beautiful and comfortable. All my needs were anticipated and there is a quiet graciousness about The Bissell House that would definitely bring me back. I really liked knowing that there was a continental breakfast ready and waiting for those of us who needed to leave a bit earlier than the sit-down breakfast (or who perhaps wanted something lighter). All in all, I was delighted with my stay and wouldn't hesitate to return.

This was a great anniversary trip for my wife and me. She loved the beauty of the furnighings and both of us loved the open porch and surrounding grounds. There is a comfortable feeling in all the nooks and crannys of the house. It was close to most everything we were doing in the area. It is a great place for a 'get away' weekend. We plan to go again and try out some of the other rooms.

The Bissell House is an oasis in Pasadena. Each room is different and has its charms. Our bathroom was spacious and had a stall shower. The public spaces are outstanding: comfortable living room (with tea and a sweet in the afternoon), library, dining room, fabulous front porch and swimming pool. Nice location, close to Pasadena attractions and not far from downtown LA. Breakfast is a delicious egg dish, yogurt and fruit.

While the Bissell House is a lovely landmark building, I experienced some drawbacks. It's refreshing to stay in a place with that much character, but the inside could use some freshening up. Some of the drawbacks could be addressed simply. The decor is outdated, the excessive amounts of fake flowers and plants inside are unsettling, and old. Pool furniture definitely needs updating- only 2 loungers for a pool on Southern California.. While innkeepers were very nice and helpful, they weren't around much. Dining room table was dirty- broken spout on water dispenser.... The Inn has a lot of potential- some simple adjustments would make a difference. Also on a noisy street corner.
Dear Valued Guest, Thank you so much for spending the time to leave us your feedback. We take your words to heart and are sorry to hear you felt our property could use some freshening up. Our goal is to keep with the time frame and add to the character of the house, but we will certainly take your thoughts into consideration. We are happy to hear the staff was very helpful, we are always close by, and can be reached by a quick phone call anytime. We can't thank you enough for choosing the Bissell House. We will use your feedback to better our guest experience. We know there are many choices out there when it comes to lodging in the Pasadena area, and we certainly hope we will get the opportunity to serve you again. Best, Janet Hoyman

We stayed in the Garden Room, which was large and well appointed. Only one other couple was staying at the property. One could see parking and other issues arising if the B&B was at capacity. Our stay was pleasant and relaxing as we were able to fully enjoy the premises. Mid-week breakfasts were nice but unexceptional -coffee was mediocre.
Thank you so much for spending the time to write this review. We are so happy to have served you, and we truly appreciate the feedback. Its great to know you got to fully enjoy our large rooms, and the relaxing atmosphere of our property. On the other hand, we are sorry to hear our breakfast did not exceed your expectations. We take this feedback seriously and want to know how we can improve. Is there any more detail you can provide us as to what made the breakfast and coffee mediocre? Thanks again for staying with us. If there is anything you need, please feel free to reach out to me by phone or email. We hope we can serve you again soon! Sincerely, Janet Hoyman

House built in 1887. Has lots of charm and small nooks in each room. The Victoria Room had a balcony that was windowed in and overlooked the pool. A great place to have my quiet time and coffee in the morning. Very relaxing. The only bad thing about the room is that there was a lot of furniture and antiques and not a lot of room for our luggage. The breakfast was yummy but quite small in comparison to other B&Bs. Creaky stairs that may annoy others but I thought it added to the character of this old house. Unheated pool had a hot tub attached that warmed up the cool pool for my husband to take a dip before breakfast.
We are so glad to know that you appreciated the charm, quiet relaxation and pool. We are sorry your having reserved one of our smallest advertised rooms proved a challenge for you with respect to your luggage. Next time, should we have the privilege of hosting you again, perhaps you can try a larger room. Also, be sure to let us know at breakfast or upon check in and we would be happy to increase your portion. Again, thanks for the feedback.

Our room was dusty and mold smelling. The air-conditioning unit was so you were either freezing or hot and loud and the walls were paper thin. The hostess was very kind, very sweet and informative, very welcoming. Were not allowed to take drinks to bedrooms--understandable with possible past clients but it is a bed and breakfast, not as nice if you can't take tea or coffee to your own room. The house was covered in strong smells plants so if you are sensitive at all to plants or flowers this is not a place to try and sleep. It is a pretty house with history a great location and sweet owners but needs some work.
We are so sorry that this guest didn’t have a great experience at our property. Unfortunately, none of these issues were brought to our attention by this guest at the time of their stay, or we would gladly have addressed them. All of our guests have always been welcome to enjoy refreshment in the comfort and convenience of their rooms. Although we consider it from time to time as we clean the rooms upon checkout, we have never requested of anyone that they not. We do not know what “strong smells plants” are. We have beautifully maintained plants in the house but they do not emit any fragrance or odor. In fact, they are specifically chosen for their odor absorbing and mitigating properties. On the contrary, we pride ourselves on the fact that we do not use fragrances of any kind throughout the house. We use only fragrance free laundry detergent and no fabric softeners in all of our laundry and the vast majority of our cleaning supplies are “environmentally friendly”. Perhaps, it was the night blooming jasmine outdoors that became fragrant in the evening, seasonally. Our walls are only as thin or thick as walls were built to be in the late 1800‘s. We are not aware of any problems with any of our air conditioning units as they are checked and maintained frequently. Four out of the seven units have actually been replaced and are brand new. Upon inspection we have not discovered any loud units or units that don’t function properly as it pertains to selecting a temperature. We check frequently and have not detected mold in any of the rooms. We maintain high standards of cleanliness and detail our rooms on a rotating basis. Of course dust accumulates daily but we do our best to stay on top of it. Again, we are only too happy to remedy any situation under our control, should it be brought to our attention. We go out of our way to accommodate our guests and earn their repeat business and referrals.

Best of all, the staff was very empathetic to our situation and provided us with everything we needed.

A comfy bed, delicious breakfast, good location, fair rate, free wifi and very, very accommodating innkeepers. What more could you ask?!

Enjoyed dining--the breakfast and tea were tasty and nicely presented; room was pleasingly decorated and met our needs; service great and all showed a standard of cleanliness; our only criticism was the bath water was tepid.
Thanks for your review! We are sorry you had difficulty figuring out the shower/tub faucet handles, as this would be the only reason why you would have experienced "tepid" bath water. We have ample hot water. Next time, please let us know during your stay so we can assist you in real time. All it takes is a quick phone call to me, you don't even have to leave your room, as the number is on the cover of the Guest Book placed in each room for your convenience. Be sure to remind us when you return, to show you how to operate the handles. We agree no one should have to settle for tepid water when hot is just a diverter twist away!

We found the Bissell House online and stayed there for 8 nights with another couple who are good friends. It was a great find. The breakfasts were delicious and filling and Ron, the chef, gave us good advice on places to go, restaurants to have dinner in. There was always tea and a sweet goodie to come back to in the afternoon. We had the two smallest rooms at the bed and breakfast and they were lovely and well-kept.

This was my second visit, I enjoyed it as much as the first. Breakfasts were wonderful and I am so glad the chef is still there. I stayed in the same room and was reminded how nice this place is. Quiet and plenty of space to hang out in the building. Love it and will return next year.

From the charming front porch overlooking Columbia Street to the neighborhood in which it's situated, this is a charming, quiet, clean, and great place to stay if you're visiting Pasadena, CA. Additionally it is only 1.5 miles from Old Town Pasadena, a leisurely walk through the surrounding neighborhoods. The breakfast served was superbly prepared and presented. And the chocolate ganache served at tea time was fantastic! Bedrooms are located at the rear of the house, making for quiet and restful sleeping quarters. We stayed in the Rose Room and thoroughly enjoyed the "period" bathroom and tub as well as the comfortable and relaxing room. Will we return to this bed and breakfast in the future? Yes! Loved it!

We were traveling with 2 other couples for an event and the Bissell House was the perfect relaxed hideaway that was convenient, very clean and very comfortable for all of us. We will be staying there again next year. We felt that we had the place to ourselves and the rooms were very spacious and met all of our needs.

Bissell House is in lovely neighborhood. Rooms are unique and very welcoming. While the rooms are quite clean, one needs to actually request replacement towels and washcloths, something that should be done when needed item is left on floor (as stated on a sign in bathroom). Food was excellent, but boring. Having various egg strata, orange juice, and biscuit for nine days in a row was enough to turn me against eggs! Malfunctioning entry light in my room was reported, but never fixed. Had to enter dark room to turn on light.
We deeply regret having failed you with regard to the three noted disappointments during your generous nine day stay. We strive for customer service that results in lifetime customers and word of mouth referrals. Our staff freshens rooms daily for "stayover" guests, unless the service is declined. This includes replenishing linens. It sounds like our timing was not in sync with your returns to the house as they remove all linens left on the floor during room fluffs. Inventory is taken in order to replace used towels. We apologize all the same. Our housekeepers are all highly educated, overqualified, experienced workers who take pride in their work. Thank you for noting the cleanliness. We are delighted that you found the food to be excellent. We are deeply sorry that at the same time, you found it “boring”, in spite of our rotation schedule. Our breakfasts are comprised primarily of eggs and dairy as advertised. I am surprised and dismayed to learn you were served our fresh baked biscuits for nine consecutive days? We rotate fresh baked croissants and serve neither, on Sundays, when chef Ron serves a “pain perdu”. He has served our guests for four years, never missed work, never late, never out sick. I will discuss your remarks with him so we prevent future guests from leaving with a similar impression or experience. We have scheduled the electrician to repair the light fixture. The room you stayed in has nine separate light fixtures. However, that is no excuse. We sincerely apologize for this occurence. Entering a dark room is never fun. Especially one that is not familiar to you and when guests have turned off the hall light outside your door, as they often do. We are happy, given advance notice, to leave a light on in any room, for guests who anticipate returning after dark. Please don't hesitate to call me directly, early on as requested in your confirmation letter so we can remedy requests or concerns during your stay as opposed to after.

The Bissell House is a fabulous place to stay when visiting Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area. We loved talking with Ron in the morning and he was so kind to make a different breakfast for me that took into consideration my dietary needs. We would definitely stay again next time we come to Southern California.

The breakfast was excellent. The chef is also a great host. I enjoyed speaking with the other guests...very friendly! Everything was clean and neat. Next time I will get a larger room. Rose is pretty, but the eave over one side of the bed is a little tricky. Planning to return!

I stayed 5 nights at The Bissell House in Victoria's room. The room is petite but what it lacks in size it makes up for in coziness and comfort. The house has a beautiful decor. Unfortunately, due to my schedule I was not able to attend the warm breakfast and the continental is adequate though simple (cereal, toast, yogurt, hard boiled eggs and coffee). The afternoon tea however was delightful and exceeded my expectations (and it was available even when I arrived back in the early evening). Other highlights included: free wifi, access to a fridge, air conditioning and a lovely outdoor pool.

We have enjoyed staying at the Bissell House Bed and Breakfast in Pasadena many times over the past 7 years. It is like a little retreat away from City life, yet right in the heart of Pasadena. A lovely century old mansion on millionaire row in Pasadena, you enjoy the comforts of a family owned B&B for the same price or less than most hotels in the same area. Each room in the Bissell House is beautifully decorated to effect the period at the turn of the last century. I believe they have recently placed new mattresses in each room, and this is the best mattress I have EVER slept on in my life. Each room Has it's own private bathroom with shower and/or bathtub. The large estate grounds are Surrounded by large mature shade trees. We enjoy sitting on the large front porch and reading or talking or just relaxing and listening to the birds. You can walk to many attractions in Pasadena. Chef Ron provides a lovely vegetarian breakfast, and there are other choices including cereal If you want to eat earlier or later. We have enjoyed lovely breakfast conversations with the owners, chef Ron, and the many interesting guests we have met over the years, including a whole family of Disney animators. The inn keepers will show you the chair where Albert Einstien sat when he was a guest of the Bissell family. We can't thank the owners enough for providing this peaceful sanctuary where we have enjoyed so many pleasant visits to Pasadena. I want everyone to go there because it is such a pleasant experience and also because I want the Bissell House to get lots of business so they will stay IN business. If you decide to stay at Bissell House, you will surely have one of the most memorable trips of your life.

We very much enjoyed our two nights at Bissell House, as we got our student oriented at Occidental College. The location is perfect for an easy trip to Eagle Rock. The owners were very flexible and understanding about our need for early breakfasts. The room easily had room for two parents and a teen, saving us a great deal of money as opposed to a chain hotel. The bathroom was luxurious!

Perfect location, great dining and activity recommendations from the innkeepers, lovely, spacious rooms, comfortable pool, good food and good company! The photos don't show the large, shaded, comfortably furnished front porch, which was our favorite place to sit and read or chat. Lovely!

Huge plus just for being family-owned. By far the best B&B in Southern California. Perfect decor, great staff, great atmosphere, delicious food, impeccable service... truly exceptional in every way. My wife and I have recommended this place to all of our friends and family.

Bissell House was wonderful. We arrived late, around 10:30 and were still greeted with a smile. Our room was very comfortable for two even though it was one of the smaller ones. Breakfast is tasty and not heavy. The porch and grounds are really lovely and relaxing. My friend actually lives nearby but decided to splurge while I was in town and was really glad she did. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Pasadena!

Really nice bed and breakfast. They absolutely respect the guests' privacy which is foremost in my mind. I felt privileged to be able to stay on Orange Grove Blvd among the beautiful old homes of Pasadena. Room was spotless, bed very comfortable. Shower/bath is a little quirky, but that's all part of the charm!

Beautiful stay in a serene and well-maintained bed and breakfast in the heart of lovely Pasadena. Attentive, kind and courteous staff. I spent time in their gorgeous library and took a long dusk walk through the gorgeous streets surrounding. Lovely dining and sitting rooms as well, with a wonderful breakfast of delicious eggs, yogurt with fruit and good coffee. A much more rewarding experience than staying at local hotels, which I have whenever in LA. Next time, I won't forget my swim suit, as they have a pool! Will return time and again ~ Thank you, dear Bissell House xx

Loved the quaint Victoria's Room! Aptly decorated with a little side sun-room overlooking the pool. Just be aware this side of the house gets the majority of the afternoon and evening sun and can be a bit hot (air conditioner did not cool the room). The pool was clear and refreshing in a nicely appointed secluded backyard. At breakfast the chef recommended local restaurant for lunch/dinner - Mike & Anne's. Great food!
Dear Wonderful Guests...We were so happy to receive this review but so sad to discover your experience with the a/c because.... we installed a NEW oversized 1.5 ton capacity unit to compensate for this very afternoon sun. Less than a year ago, in fact, in this very room. We fear that your remote control was perhaps programmed for fan only mode as opposed to a/c. You wouldn't be the first guest who missed this distinction. Next time, PLEASE, PLEASE inform us DURING your stay! There is no need to suffer! Meanwhile, we'll see what we can do to prevent this unnecessary inconvenience for future guests. Sincerest apologies and thank you for the otherwise glowing review.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Bissell House. We had a personal welcome experience, in which we were given a tour of the place and the history of the house by the owner. Our Victorian room was clean and beautifully arranged, and my daughter put the "nature sound" right away. It was simply a wonderful and pleasant time for my family.

A wonderful B&B. Beautifully appointed and thoughtfully run. Excellent breakfasts These might be varied a bit more for those staying several nights. The chef/server is a terrific guide: lively, cultured and extremely knowledgeable about the area.. Afternoon tea and great cake available. Our room was smaller than expected, but very nice and comfortable. Some rooms are huge. All have everything needed. Nice garden, pool, well stocked library. We often stay in B&B's and our expectations are high. The Bissell House met them. Would definitely recommend..

This was our second visit to the Bissell House and it was wonderful, as was the first. Beautiful room, ample size, great shower. I like firmer mattresses, but that's nitpicking. The breakfasts were extra special and the poool gave me anopportunity to air out my lungs with some hard swimming. All in all, a great place to spend a few days.

The Bissell House was very conveniently located for us - right by the freeway and near Old Town Pasadena. The chef, Ron, is cheerful, helpful host - he makes a great breakfast. Our room was a great price, cute and very clean. We'll go back!

We enjoy staying in different places each time we visit. The location of the B&B, right on the Pasadena/ South Pasadena line made for quick travel times to our events. Ron, the chef de cuisine, is fabulous and Pasadena needs to hire him as an Ambassador. Our room could have really benefited from some attention. The mattress needed turning and maybe replacement would be appropriate. The layout of the room is rather odd, as a guest cannot access the closet easily. As we are familiar with old bathroom fixtures, we knew how to manipulate the water delivery for the tub/shower but an information card, near same, would be appropriate. The room has way too much furniture and is very dark. For light sleepers, South Orange Grove is a busy street, it didn't bother us but plan accordingly, if you have that problem. Parking is available on site but very tight - small vehicles are best. We hope to stay again but in a different room.

We spent ten days at the Bissell House and really enjoyed our stay. We were visiting relatives in South Pasadena and it was much better than a hotel. We enjoyed the gourmet breakfasts, starting with early morning coffee and the WSJ, and tea and cake every afternoon. The Hoyman family and Ron, the breakfast chef, were uniformly friendly and well informed about the local area. The house is beautiful and nicely landscaped, with a lovely swimming pool. We hope to return on future visits to Pasadena.

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff is terrific - attending to any request. The food is terrific and the afternoon snacks are a delight. Only negative comment: the bathroom in the Rose Room needs updating. The double spigots make it difficult to get the right temperature of water and the shower, though quaint, is not very functional.

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful valentine's day stay here. It was a perfect place for my pregnant wife to relax while I was at work. Breakfast was an incredible treat - far exceeding our expectations (and since my wife was pregnant and sleeping in, they brought the food up to us in a classy tray). Everyone that works there were so very nice. It's the kind of place you can make friends (but they also understand boundaries).

Thank you Bissell House for being such a great place for my daughter to recuperate after a surgical procedure at a nearby hospital. Janet and the staff were so kind to make sure she was comfortable and attentive in case she needed anything. She slept like a baby and commented that it was so wonderful to snuggle into the wonderfully soft down comforters and pillows. It was such a relief for me to know that she was being "mothered" by someone as I was not able to be there for her. Thanks Everyone!!

The Bissell House is a lovely property. The room was very nice, but had a leaky faucet in the tub/shower. We enjoyed a delicious chocolate cake and tea the afternoon we arrived. The sitting room was very inviting. Breakfast was served in the sunny dining room. Both the service and the food were very good. The only complaint that we had about our stay was our arrival. We were met outside the property by two women. They were not overly friendly. They asked us which room we had reserved. We had booked the room a few months earlier and didn't remember. They explained the house rules to us, but totally lacked the warmth that we are used to when staying at a b and b. Overall we would give the Bissell House 3.5.

Beautifully decorated for Christmas! It is complete with gorgeous antiques, especially the sitting room and dining room. The Morning Glory room we stayed in was superbly decorated and the claw foot tub was quaint. The bath robes felt so rich, comfortable and soft. The bed was just the right comfort and firmness. The service was very helpful and food delicious. I highly recommend this B&B.

We had an incredible stay at the Bissell House ... our room was quiet, spacious, a lovely blue and white with lace curtains, and oh so comfortable and warm at night. We were surprised to have the most wonderful egg dish for breakfast, the second time on request, as well as juice, warm rolls and best of all hot tea any time of day. Do stay! We hope to again and again.

The first day of our four day stay was totally rainy - so we sat before the fire, read, sipped tea, and thoroughly enjoyed not having to do anything. At breakfast, Ron gave us lots of neighborhood history and activity suggestions - welcome and useful. The bed in the English Holiday Room is the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Chairs and desk were entirely appropriate for reading and working on our computers. The living room is furnished with really comfortable chairs and sofas, plus a grand piano. Coffee, chocolate, and tea makings are available all day. The owner also recommended a fine tea room which we walked to. Would we go back to the Bissell House? Absolutely. Any time. Emily & Raymond

We made a double reservation with another family with young children. Our dietary commitment to organic food was honored, and we were served an incredible pain perdu with organic ingredients, even organic berries!! This is next to impossible to find anywhere, so we were thrilled. The rooms were beautiful and well-appointed with period furniture. We stayed in the Garden Room, and it was quite spacious, with a lovely bathroom, sitting area and big, comfy bed. More than enough room for my husband, our toddler, and myself. The common areas are charming, comfortable and welcoming. The library is a cozy spot to read and relax with a book about local attractions. All in all, a wonderful stay that we will be pleased to repeat! Sabrina

From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by elegance and grace. The 1887 Victorian home & grounds have been restored with obvious love and charm yet keep the needs of the visitor in mind. Our room was more than accommodating with comfortable furniture, adequate storage, and a comfortable, luxuriant bed. The breakfasts featured various fresh fruits and vegetables and were delicious as well as healthy. The Bissell House met our expectations in most ways, probably because we had been looking forward to our stay for several months and had read all the reviews very carefully. It's a lovely place to stay. We had two rooms - the Master Suite for us and Victoria's Room for our daughter. The Master Suite is very comfortable and has plenty of space; the attached bathroom with double-headed shower is also well appointed and was a pleasure to use - the only (minor) letdown was that the tap in one of the sinks did not work. When I drew this to the innkeeper's attention, there was no concern or apology, just a brief "Oh, that doesn't work." It wasn't a big deal, so I left it at that. Some other posters have said that Victoria's room is small: well, it is on the small side, but it is exactly as described on the website, and our daughter was certainly over the moon about it and extremely comfortable in there. I do have to say, we were a little disappointed in the breakfasts, which had received such wonderful reviews elsewhere. We were served eggs on the first day and, whilst these were really good, my wife does not eat eggs and had to make do with something less substantial. The owners were apologetic and pointed out that we should have let them know about this. I would have done this, had I not gained the impression from all the reviews that the breakfasts were extensive and that there would be some kind of choice. Certainly, at every other B&B we have stayed in in the US there has always been a choice at breakfast. So, we did feel let down by the breakfast. The owners were extremely welcoming and helpful, and I certainly would not let any of the above put me off staying at Bissell House again. Overall, our stay was comfortable and good value for money, and I would recommend this place to pretty much anyone.

When I travel alone for business, it is so nice to come "home" after a busy day on the LA freeways. The Bissell House has been a wonderful home away from home for me for the past 2 years. The yard and gardens are lovely, and I enjoy the pool area. Breakfasts are delicious and the company is always enjoyable. It is well located near a freeway exit to the 110. I highly recommend it whether for business or pleasure.

This was our first experience with a BEDandBREAKFAST, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and restful the stay was. The Innkeeper(s) & staff were friendly and curtious, and check in and check out was effertless. My wife and I spent 8 nights at the Bissell House while visiting friends and relatives in the Pasadena area. The Bissell House is located in a very beautiful area of Pasadena and a short drive to just about every attraction in town. The rooms were spacious and beds very comfy. Even though we ate breakfast every morning for 7 days in row, they were veried sufficiently and tasted great. We will definitley return to the Bissell House when we visit Pasadena in the future.

The Bissell House was a treat for me. It is like stepping back in time to the 19th century and having little elves do maintenance and cleaning and serving all in in invisible way. The house is full of history, and the staff is so respectful of privacy that you hardly ever see them. The stuff just gets done somehow. If you are looking for quiet, this is the place for you:)

--that's why we can't say it exceeded our expectations, but met our already high expectations. I always think I'll use the pool, but end up lazily enjoyed the big porch instead, knitting or reading. Our bed in English Holiday was supercomfortable, and the room was spacious and pleasant. The location is wonderful. As well as seeing family who live nearby, we visited the Huntington Library and the Norton Simon Museum.

We were visiting LA for the first time and thought to stay at an Inn instead of a local hotel. The Inn was very nice and located on a quiet street, yet close enough to a highway (w/o noise) so travel to/from LA was convenient. The rooms were comfortable and the grounds were nice, especially for young kids needing to run around and exert energy. The person greeting us upon arrival was not as knowledgeable about the local area as we expected, but was able to provide us some answers after a quick search on the computer. Breakfasts were nice, although our young kids would have preferred something "less fancy." Overall, we had a pleasant stay and the Inn met our expectations.

We stayed one night in Victoria's Room. The room was smaller than we expected. It was difficult getting into or out of bed from either side, with the bed placement in a very narrow nook. The solarium was also smaller than it seemed in the picture, although it did conveniently house our luggage. We had just a bit of difficulty with the small bathroom, especially the sink area with the narrow step-up which we both fell off backwards at least once. The shower was nice. The place was clean and I enjoyed the breakfast--my husband thought it was too rich!
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay in our Victoria Room. Although we go out of our way to advertise this as being a small room in the room description on our website and certainly also by phone, we are very sorry to learn that you had difficulty using the step up to the sink in the bathroom and/or porch which resulted in your "falling backward". The reader may be fascinated to know that this room was the former laundry room of Anna Bissell McKay, the vacuum heiress who occupied the home for 50 years. The bathroom was the laundry dumbwaiter. In keeping with the historic value and uniqueness of the house, we thought it best not to re-engineer the room. Again, we are very sorry it was smaller than you had expected. We hope you won't hold it against us and give a larger room a try the next time around. For future reference, none of the other rooms have steps in the bedroom or bathroom and may be more suitable for guests who prefer more space in general or who may have ambulatory concerns.

I recently spent 2 nights at the Bissell House B & B and was very pleased with the accommodations. The bed was comfortable and the food was great! The house is beautiful. I enjoyed sitting by the pool on a barely warm afternoon. The afternoon tea and dessert is a nice touch. I would definitely stay here again!

We celebrated our 23rd Anniversary at The Bissell House. Janet, Carrie, Jennifer helped me surprise my wife with beautiful flowers, chocolates and sparkling cider in the room! We enjoyed a dessert tea & reading in the library and garden by the pool. Room was clean, nicely decorated and comfortable (A/C worked well & quietly). Very interesting history of the house and the Pasadena area. Located in a beautiful area and very convenient to Old Town Pasadena, South Pasadena and minutes from Downtown LA. I would definitely stay there again.

The Bissell House has everything: good food; caring, compassionate, friendly service; clean rooms; comfortable and charming common rooms. Also, the Bissell House seems to attract very interesting guests. Meeting these guests over breakfast was a treat. The location is superb, on a very upscale street, near many restaurants of all price ranges and ethnicities, close to shops Old Town Pasadena, South Lake district, museums, in other words, everything Pasadena has to offer. We highly recommend this B&B.

Waking up in your upstairs bedroom with the smell of breakfast permeating the air, it's like the joy of childhood comforts once again! At breakfast, we joined the conversation of proud attendees at the local colleges' spring graduations. We walked to the Heirloom Bakery Cafe in South Pasadena for delicious salads, sandwiches and pizzas. The innkeepers are welcoming and devoted to your comfort. Have stayed here many times... a home away from home.

Little things like filtered water instead of tap at the complimentary tea table and making sure all of the light bulbs are working in the rooms would add to the professionalism of the place.
We are not sure what led this reviewer to believe we use tap water. We apologize if we somehow mistakenly conveyed this. We have always used our reverse osmosis filter system for drinking water for our guests. Please let us know if you need a lightbulb replaced! We have a minimum of 5-10 light fixtures in each of our rooms and while we don't turn each and every one of them on every day, we do routinely replace bulbs and are only to happy to replace them when notified. Perhaps this guest is referring to some of our bulbs that are left out by design, rather than oversight, due to the antique wiring being incompatible with so-called "energy efficient" modern day wattages and burn out instantly each time we attempt to replace them.

An old elegant mansion house, one of the oldest in Pasadena. Owned by a lady and her two daughters who work hard at making it comfortable and welcoming. Cosy bedrooms, sweet bird song through the windows, roses in the garden and a pool. Guests cross and meet as well as enjoy privacy. A stylish lounge, classical music or jazz playing while you sip on tea and sample the cake of the day (available any time of day!!). Breakfast is carefully prepared and served by Ron who enjoys chatting with guests as they start their day at the long dining table (I happened to choose to sit where Albert Einstein sat when he was invited to dinner by the Bissel family!!). It all feels very homely and is definitely elegant.

It was like entering a place with invisible staff---not welcoming in any way. Also included huge lists of don't do this, penalty for that, which just seemed an unfriendly way to conduct business. We love staying at B&Bs and usually have a delightful time, so this was a real surprise.
This review is a real surprise to us as well...in fact, we wondered at first glance, whether or not the reviewer had mistaken us for another Inn altogether. We apologize if we somehow made one of our guests feel unwelcome. It is certainly never our intention. We are a traditional B&B and therefore do not maintain a "front of the house" presence at all times. We do our best to make our guests feel at home and leave them to enjoy their relaxation in privacy or to mingle with other guests to the degree they feel comfortable. If such an unfriendly huge list or lists of "do's and don'ts" with resultant penalties exists, we'd love to know where so we can have it/them removed at once.

I was greeted by Carrie who has a bubbly personality, and she gave me a tour of the lovely inn. She answered my questions and made me feel at home. I stayed in Victoria's Room, which was fabulous. The sunroom overlooking the pool is a peaceful sitting area. The room was VERY clean. Ron cooked amazing breakfasts every morning -- his own special quiche recipes! It was very informal, like a family atmosphere, sitting around the table and chatting with him and guests. The inn was easy to find and in a quaint location. I stayed three nights while attending a conference at a local church; I would definitely stay there again when I return to Pasadena!

I was very happy with every element of our stay except that the air conditioning in our room (the Morning Glory room) didn't work.
We appreciate this positive review. Just so no one is mislead by it however, we feel obliged to point out that one night only, the a/c required maintenance in this room. A guest had reserved it for that same night but the repairman wasn't available until the next morning. So when the guest arrived to check in, we informed her of the impending maintenance and offered her a free upgrade to our superior Master room instead. However, she politely declined, stating that they "didn't need air conditioning as temperatures were cool" at the time. Apart from that, we have only had on a rare occasion, a guest mistake it for not working because they have it set to "auto on" which is fan only mode instead of "auto cool" which is air conditioning. All of our rooms have their own individual a/c and heating units and they are all maintained on a regular basis.

We feel that the Bissel House is the only place to stay while we are in Pasadena. The service is outstanding & the atmosphere makes you feel as if your are at home. We enjoy the history of the house, it's charm, peacefulness and beauty--it is a much needed retreat in the hussle & bussle of the 21st Century.

Beautiful gardens, good location, warm fire, quiet, welcoming self-service tea, nice home base, comfortable bed. The shower/tub in the Morning Glory room is claustrophobic (plastic lining sticks to you as you shower) and is hard to balance in (curved bottom), but I'm sure it is an "authentic antique." Breakfast is EXTREMELY repetitive and off-putting by the 4th day - probably fine for a weekend. The "tip envelope" left in the room at the end of the stay is presumptuous & tacky.

Gorgeous mansion on millionaire's row in Pasadena. Beautiful house. I stayed last minute and they accommodated me smoothly. My room was comfortable and had a nice view of the pool. Wish I could have stayed longer! I left super early in the morning, so didn't get to enjoy the full breakfast, but the early service with muffins and boiled eggs was perfect! Love the selection of teas in the living room, too. Beautiful place with friendly and helpful staff. You'll love it.

Room lovely, service and friendliness of staff excellent. Breakfast OK. Coffee weak.
Thanks for the heads up on the coffee! I guess if "it ain't broke, don't fix it" would apply here. We're not sure whether or not it was the new brand our chef tried or that the coffee maker was in need of replacement. In either case, we have replaced the coffee makers and no longer serve the trial brand. Problem solved. Again, thank you.

Could not beleive how beautiful is the setting and the landscaping. Felt right at home and never overwhelmed by numbers of guests, even with a full house. Breakfast tended to be repetitive, though nutritious and tasty. Staff is very cordial and pleasant and very helpful in finding wonderful activities.

We were satisified but not wowed by the Bissell House. It's breakfast is served too late for us to take part in it (9am) which made kind of a waste to bother with the B/B experience. Our room was nice but faced on a busy street and was quite a bit of street noise started at 630am. Overall, I'm not sure we'll be back for the prices they charge for the rooms.
Thank you for your candid review. We're sorry you had some disappointments. Being an Urban Inn, located in Los Angeles, we find that most of our light sleepers either travel with earplugs or opt for using the white noise machines we provide in the street side rooms. Also, we agree it is hard to find that happy medium when it comes to finding a time to serve breakfast that accommodates each of our guest's schedule. We provide an expanded continental option anytime for early risers or those with early departures. We're sorry if we somehow missed communicating this to you during check-in, as is customary. Just so you and anyone else reading this knows, our chef makes himself available frequently to serve breakfast earlier when requested. Next time be sure to let us know the night prior or come when you have more time to relax and we'll make a point of making it happen for you! We agree the breakfast is a very special part of the overall B&B experience! Last but not least, all of our rooms have been reduced 25-50% from the regular rates for the past two years and counting to accommodate the Recession. I don't know how much lower we could go without having to sacrifice quality above and beyond what you get at your average standard hotel. I hope to have addressed all of your concerns. Thank you again.

Our short and sweet stay in the Garden Room at the Bissell House surpassed all expectations. From the moment I made the reservation with Janet over the phone to the final goodbye's at the house, we felt welcomed! The service was outstanding at made us feel right like we were departing after spending the evening at a family member's home. While we only had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with their talented and gracious Chef, we will surely return. We brought our 3 month old son and even though most B&Bs are not as kid friendly, the Bissell House welcomed him with open arms! Thank you for such a perfect evening, delightful breakfast and true hospitality!!!

My husband and I returned after seven years and found the inn as enjoyable as the first time. The vegetarian breakfasts were tasty, but we did miss the option of having bacon or sausage on the side. Also, don't know if we misunderstood or it was an error, but our room did not receive maid service - no straigtening, no replenishment of shampoos/soaps, etc.; unusual based on our experiences the first time at Bissell and at other inns over the years, but we still enjoyed our time there. The avialability of tea and afternoon snacks were a nice touch.
Thank you for returning to the Bissell House for the second time in seven years. "Maid service" is provided daily for each of our guest rooms, so this was obviously an oversight due to possible miscommunication between our housekeepers and one that I apologize for, if so. We would have loved to have known at the time, however, so we could remedy it during your actual visit as opposed to only being able to address it after the fact. My phone number is posted everywhere at the Inn including in the confirmation letter we send out in advance with instructions to call for any reason, for this very purpose. The only time we do not offer maid service is when it is requested by the guest that we not provide it or if for example, the guest returns earlier than expected to re-occupy the room and/or never leaves in the first place. Again, our sincerest apologies for overlooking your "fluff service". Although, we don't intend to be adding meat to our menu at any time in the future, we hope you'll return for a third visit, and in less than another seven years.

While the location was the absolute perfect place to stay for these events, I can not go without saying how great the facilities were as well. The people . expecially Janet, the amenities, the layout and yes, even the other guests, were all ingredients that made this a special three day event. Janet and her staff were always there to help and be sure our visit was special and the Garden Room which we stayed in was perfect. All the recommendations as to where to go eat for New Years Eve and shop were spot on so all I can say is that this place made our trip special......ALSO TCU WON THE ROSE BOWL !!

The house is beautiful and has an interesting history, including that Albert Einstein used to stay there when he came to Caltech. Our first night we found a few freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in a jar in the living room which were wonderful! (none the next night though). We would definitely stay again. Only minor complaints are that there are no screens on the windows to protect from mosquitos in the middle of the night if you like your windows cracked open for fresh air, and, though they promised that they would have decaf coffee when I made my reservation, they discovered they had run out and couldn't go get more, so I had to go without coffee for the weekend. My husband enjoyed the quiche for breakfast but I couldn't eat it as it had a very dominant onion flavor, the one thing I'm not crazy about, so I ate two of their yogurt parfaits which were very nice and had organically grown fruit in them, which is the way we do it at home. The gal working that weekend was very friendly and helpful, but the family member we ran into a couple of times seemed too busy to say hello to us in passing. That's okay, I'd be sick of greeting every guest too if I lived there, but my experience with B&B's in the past has been that the resident family acknowledges your presence when you run into them. Overall, it's a great place to stay and we'd stay again.
Thank you for your positive review. We are happy that you would "definitely stay again," as we would love to welcome you back to Bissell. Two things--just so that you and other readers know: We don't have screens on the windows because we have tried to keep the original 1887 exterior of the Bissell House, and we have never had mosquito issues--especially in winter. Crickets yes! But no mosquitos. And secondly, the "family member" who seemed aloof, is just that, a family member who lives there but is not involved with the day to day operations of the Inn. It is for this reason that she tries to not intermingle too much with guests, or she would end up having to hostess full time. Oh, and wanted to clarify that we actually did put decaf out in a thermos for our decaf drinkers, so there must have been a communications snaffoo. On your next visit we'll make sure there is a pot with as much as you can drink! As to the cookies, we had a house full of teenagers and children but even our adult guests have confessed to devouring them by the handful! Again, thanks for taking the time to comment. We're happy your stay was a good one and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Our family (2 adults, 2 boys, aged 9 and 6) stayed for 3 nights in the Bissell House last summer, and we were really delighted with the welcome we received. The owners couldn't do enough for us, and were very friendly, without being intrusive. The inn itself is lovely, with a great garden and pool perfect for cooling off and relaxing. The afternoon treats and complimentary wines were a nice touch, and the breakfasts were wonderful. I would highly recommend staying here while in Pasadena or LA generally.

The Bissell House is a lovely property. The house is charming. The innkeeper is very friendly. The breakfast is excellent. The sheets and towels are nice quality, and the products provided in the bathroom are quite nice. Tea service is lovely. This is a great place for a romantic getaway or if you are simply looking for some place that is cozy. Keep in mind that the house is old. While it has been well maintained, certain aspects feel old-world and charming while other simply feel old. My only word of caution is to chose your room wisely. The best rooms are the Garden Room, Morning Glory, English Holiday, and Prince Albert. The Garden Room is the largest and is quite nice. Morning Glory is a bit small, but charming. English Holiday is a nice size, although the shower is a bit small. Prince Albert is quite nice. It has a good bedroom and a nice tub. Beware that Rose Room and Victoria's Room are both very small. I would be disappointed if I checked into one of these two rooms. Another room that is not always listed is the master suite. This is a large corner room on the second floor. Aside from the large shower, it simply feels old. It reminds me on my Grandmother's bedroom. It feels old and tired and lacks decor. It would be very unhappy to check into this room, despite its large size. So, chose wisely and you won't go wrong.
Thank you for your candid review and positive remarks! While we wish every review were wholly positive, reflective of our continuous efforts to satisfy every customer, we know this is not a reasonable expectation. We cannot deny that we are an historic Victorian property. In fact, the third oldest remaining property in South Pasadena, built in 1887. However, the last thing we want is for a guest to be disappointed with their room selection. For this purpose, we post photos of the rooms online for all to see, in advance of booking, with accurate accompanying descriptions, including those for our two smaller rooms. Although, the ability of any one guest to gain access to each and every room upon their visit does somewhat surprise us, due to our high occupancy rate, we do accept that personal tastes vary and are highly subjective. We suspect this review may have included entry into a room (Master Suite) that was not currently in rotation due to extensive detailing work being done, including the temporary removal of the drapes, for cleaning. This certainly would give the appearance of drab to any onlooker. We are sorry if this is the case as we would hate to have this review falsely influence a guest as a result, considering it happens to be a favorite of many, past and present, specifically for its decor, which includes many fine floral prints, a decorative fireplace, crown molding, antique bridal gown, and matching carved antique headboard and armoire. Again, all of which can be seen in the photos online. Not surprising is the fact that each of our rooms is and has been a favorite of one or more of our guests at one time or another.

I organized a gathering for my mom's family to stay while we celebrated my dad's memorial service and birthday. Janet was so generous, and kind. I must admit, I've never been much for bed and breakfasts because of the miss-mash tendency (that often seems like you're visiting your old Aunt Marge), but instead Bissell House had all I crave in a B&B - warmth, humanity and history - plus comfortable beds, an outstanding breakfast, tasteful antiques. It was PERFECT. Thank you!!!

Beautiful well-preserved home. Lovely antique furnishings in our English Garden room. Loved the table in the parlor with the dessert cake, fruits and chai tea! The parlor's warm ambiance after a day out was restorative-sitting by the fire having a scrumptious nibble/sip before heading up to our room to snuggle in our big comfy bed. Enjoyed my tofu scramble our innkeeper whipped up to accommodate my special diet our first morning.

Wonderful stay with staff making you feel very welcome. I do think the ad in the B&B coupon book should change, wine hour is no longer offered, but advertised in description.
Thank you for your review. While we have chosen to offer complimentary wine to our guests in the past, in addition to our afternoon dessert tea, we recently decided to no longer offer it for a number of reasons. All of which we are happy to share with anyone who inquires. We would love to know what B&B coupon book we are running an ad in as we are not aware of one at this time. Please let us know so we can confirm and correct this as soon as possible.

My stay was short and sweet, but the emphasis is on "sweet". I had a lovely 3rd floor room, that was perfect for my needs. I lovely bathtub complete with bath salts, a big fluffy comforter, and a delicious breakfast- made to order, all were part of my fabulous stay. I would love to come back again and spend time on the grounds- the amazing pool, the well stocked library, and great gardens. And the huge BONUS: When I informed the reservationist I was a vegetarian, she told me that the house proudly caters to vegetarians (They even had SOY MILK!!!) and my animal friendly ethos, were theirs as well! I will definiately be back.
Thank you very much! Always fun to host likeminded individuals. Come again soon!

Charm, character and beauty greeted us in this homey relaxed B&B. One immediately feels at home and the service is top flight, informal, and comforting. A warm and wonderful experience from start to finish. Thank you all.
Precisely what we aim for, so thank you very much for your review!

A couple in our mid-thirties, we chose the Bissell House based on its history, user reviews, and convenient location to multiple areas of interest in LA. ROOMS: All the rooms are distinctive and lovely. Generally, the higher-priced rooms are larger and have more seating/features. My favorite rooms are the Garden Room and Prince Albert. COMMON AREAS: The grounds, garden, and porch areas are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Positioned on about a half an acre, the outside of the Bissell House is a breathtaking oasis of beauty and tranquility in the middle of a pretty busy area of town. And the garden and lawn are ORGANIC-that’s right. No chemicals are used on the grounds, which are lovingly maintained by both the family and two gardeners. The large pool is surrounded by lush roses and other glorious fauna and foliage. It’s like a wildlife sanctuary there-the humming birds appear to be in Heaven by the sounds of things, and little squirrels and rabbits make frequent appearances. TEA, BREAKFAST/FOOD: Teas, coffee, filtered water, wine were available 24-7. While I was rarely around for breakfast, I made it a habit to check out the afternoon snack, which changed daily and included such gourmet goodies as: lemon yogurt cake, almond torte, pear clafouti, dark chocolate brownies…yum. VALUE: I found this place to deliver excellent value. The quoted prices are all that you pay. There aren’t any taxes or service fees, so it’s really quite a bargain.
We can't thank you enough for this remarkable review. Few people take the time to elaborate in such detail. We appreciate it greatly!

We stayed in the Victoria Room which provided a nice view over the pool area below. The enclosed rear deck was part of the room, providing a nice reading area in the morning. The home has been well maintained over the years and gives a good sense of what it must have been like early last century. The breakfasts were well prepared and a tasty change from the standard continental breakfasts served by many other B & Bs. We needed information on some of the sights in the Pasadena area and the staff provided knowledgable information that was very beneficial to making our stay enjoyable and memorable.

I had buisness in the area and decided to stay at a bed and breakfest instead of one of the big chain hotels. Definintely a good choice! Free parking, breakfest and a very quiet evening. I found it to be a good place to relax and rest.

Beautiful rooms, peaceful atmosphere, a lovely escape from the bustle of the city with all the comforts. Thanks for a great night's sleep.

Having not sampled the Dining (and not really needing any Service), I had to keep those ratings right in the middle. But this place really is gorgeous, with enough of the original appointments and character (including creaky stair steps) to keep it fun and interesting. My wife and I spent a night in the top-floor Garden Room, which had all the amenities, plus a Jacuzzi-style tub. A cracked porcelain water faucet and other "flaws" were pleasant reminders that this wasn't some corporate-chain imitation. It's the real thing, just like my grandparents' old house.

The folks at the Bissell House are terrific. They will do whatever they can to accommodate you while you enjoy a private and calming stay. The rooms are great (especially the Morning Glory Room and the Garden Room). The breakfast is delicious; you can enjoy your meal with other guests or in the privacy of your room. Everything was clean and easy. I could not believe I was in South Pasadena or in LA County. Highly Recommended.

The Bissell House was terrific! My wife and I loved the room and the surrounding grounds were magnificent. We felt as if we were far away yet still in the city. The morning breakfast was very enjoyable. The food was excellent and dining with the other guests was fun. Lounging around in the beautifully decorated living area reading the paper with nice music in the background was so relaxing. We stayed only one night, but it felt so much longer. Thank you Bissell House. Tony B

We were going to go to see the Rose Parade floats that day and then stay at the Bissell House that night (a surprise for my wife). She was sick and couldn't make the day trip but we thought what the hey let's at least spend the night. We called to say we would be late, when we got there got in no problems. Our room was very nice; the place is decorated like a well kept/loved home (we really liked the downstairs living room/dining room and the family photos in the study), plenty of things to munch and sip as we made our way to bed (slept great). We had a GREAT breakfast and chatted with our host most of the morning. She shared her secrets of enjoying the 12/31 pre-parade preparations for the Rose Parade the night before (Bissel House is on the same street as the Tournament of Roses House). We hung out after breakfast, watched some football and left for home relaxed and happy. If you need to commute to Pasadena/Glendale or downtown LA for a business trip you should keep the Bissell House in mind, it's only minutes from either and a welcome change to hotels/motels. Thanks!

This tranquil inn is tucked away on millionaire's row in South Pasadena. The decor is true to period. We stayed in the English Cottage room and it was very charming and complete with plush towels and bathrobes. The afternoon tea/wine hour was self serve and had delicious goodies and over 15 different types of tea. Service is on china and silver. A dip in the pool was refreshing, and again, plush towels were available. The cooked morning breakfast was vegetarian (parfait w/ fresh berries, apple dumpling, fresh croissants, tea, coffee, orange juice) and very appetizing. Food, ice, and drinks are available at all hours as self serve. The hostess, Juli was very charming and gracious. We rarely stay at B & B's and this was a pleasant surprise.

The hot breakfast is not to be missed although the buffet is wonderful too and is available all day. Our room was spacious and comfortable and we enjoyed sitting in the garden and enjoying the flowering citrus trees and the feeling of being in the past. Our host Julie was very gracious and the location is near to everything that Pasadena has to offer.
