Winston Place had been recommended to me as the nicest place to stay in the area. I'm thrilled that we listened. I will stay here next year on my return to Valley Head. Jim couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. He clearly is proud to be the proprietor of Winston Place. The place is old (That's not a bad thing, it was built a long time ago.) and not modern. The floors creak and slant in places. It is, however, very nice and the bed was very comfortable. There are tvs in the rooms as well as wifi. Jim's breakfasts were outstanding. Again, I'm glad I stayed here.

An antique, kinda quirky, but cool place in northeast Alabama. A shrine to an all-American Crimson Tide football player, as well. But the best part, the southern hospitality of Faye, our hostess. She is everything you would want in a hostess.

Had a wonderful weekend at Winston's place. Jim was so accomadatingand wonder conversationalist. The inn was beautiful and so were the grounds. Never had been in this area before. The falls were so pretty and relaxing but so was the veranda back at Winston's. Everywhere Jim suggested us to eat was perfect and so was the food. We would stay again

We love Bed and Breakfast establishments!! I wanted to get away just for the weekend, but since we live in mid part of Alabama we didn't want to drive 3.5 hours to hit the beach or 6 hours to hit the mountains in North Carolina. I did my research and found this gem. Located just 2.5 hours from home, and we found ourselves just at the foot of Blueridge with easy access to the mountain restaurants or Fort Payne or Chattanooga. It rained all weekend, and that was just perfect and cozy. Even though there is plenty to do outdoors, we just wanted a little R & R and found it. The room was cozy and beautifully decorated with a TV. The Inn was clean, beautiful rooms, YUMMY breakfast and the hosts were awesome!! They went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable. We have relatives who live nearby and they were unaware this place existed! Now they know. Will definitely return!!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the Winston Place for three nights recently. The Bunch family offers the perfect B and B experience. The home has a wonderful pre civil war history and the owners are very willing to share their knowledge and interesting stories. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We have stayed in many B and B s around the world, the breakfasts here top our list. Maple, brown sugar, bourbon bacon...oh my. Apple dumplings, yummy cheesy grits, delicious coffee, juices, fresh eggs, waffles....served buffet style or plated...very generous amounts of delicious foods from the Alabama cuisine. We will be back.

I was in the area for a goal setting workshop with one of my favorite ministers and chose the highly recommended Winston B&B as my base camp. Truly delighted with both Leslie and Jim Bunch -- the tales we all can weave! Ms. Faye delighted us with her culinary arts aka downhome southern breakfast including Apple dumplings. Yum! I loved the decor and being a novice antique collector, just tickled at all their intricacies! Made new friends! I will be back! TQ of May-retta (Marietta) Georgia

This property is a beautiful old southern mansion with all the creaks and oddities one would expect from a home that was built 200 years ago. Overall, our experience was good, but I would suggest the owners do a few things to update the accommodations. The bed linens looked and felt old and worn. I actually didn't feel like they were clean (they were) and the pillows need to be replaced. The rooms are large and the bathrooms were a good size for a home this old. My other suggestion is to offer a lighter breakfast along with the heavy morning meal that was offered. French toast casserole, eggs, hash brown potatoes, cheese grits can be a bit much for some guests. A choice of eggs, fruit and muffins would be a great and easy alternative. Overall, the host was wonderful and would engage you in tails of is football days if you ask. The home has quite a history and it was a treat to hear all the stories of the area and the original family who built this beautiful property.

My Bride and I were married in Mentone and we can't say enough about The Winston Place Bed and Breakfast. The place is full of history as well as a Great Inn Keeper in Jim Bunch who played on The Alabama Crimson Tide National Championship Team's in 1978 and 1979! What great stories Jim! We actually had all the rooms during our stay with other members of the family and it was just a very relaxing and stress free stay and experience. Highly recommend you stay at this place and enjoy Jim's Southern Hospitality! Thanks for a memorable stay Jim! And ROLL TIDE!!! Mitch and Gloria Kucera (Silverhill,Al)

My family and I stayed at Winston Place for 2 nights. It is a beautiful home with gorgeous surroundings! I loved the feel of being in an old southern home near a railroad track. The host was informative about the place's history and entertained us with stories about his Bama football years with Bear Bryant. He also prepared a delicious breakfast for us each morning. I definitely want to go back!

We had a wonderful 2 day stay at Winston Place. My daughter, daughter-in-law and myself were taking my grand-daughter to summer camp for one week. The house is very comfortable and home like. With the exception of the occupied bedrooms, we had the run of the house, balconies, grounds. There is a neat, small family cemetery in the back grounds. the beds are comfortable and the home is clean. The breakfast is great, outstanding french toast! The Mr. Jim is a very good host and knows the history of the home.We plan to stay there next year when we bring my grand-daughter to camp.

My wife spent our 45 wedding anniversary at Windsor Place and it was wonderful. Jim Bunch was a great host and his breakfast was truly delicious. We stayed in the Patrick Henry suite and had a private entrance onto the veranda which was great when you have the love of your life with you looking out over the countryside. Jim has plenty of stories to tell about his time on the Alabama National Championship team which I found to be quite interesting. Thanks Winston Place for a wonderful time.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit with Jim Bunch last weekend. This was my first experience in a bed and breakfast and I was so pleased. The room was very nice. Jim cooked breakfast both mornings and it was delicious. We watched the Alabama Game in a large den area with Jim and a couple of the the other guests. The house was beautiful and of course the weather was perfect. Fabulous! Stretch and Charla Reed

My sisters and I stayed here and absolutely loved it! The home is beautiful and the hosts are wonderful. Breakfast was delicious every morning. We sat on the upstairs porch every night listening to the sound of crickets and other creatures. The train comes right by the house but we enjoyed it. It's very close to Mentoneamd a short drive to Little River Canyon.

This is a beautiful historic home turned B&B. The hosts are gracious in sharing their space and making your stay relaxing and comfortable. There are at least two rooms that sleep four - which was a nice benefit for us. We were able to have our family together in one room. Our room was spacious with two queen beds and a lovely sitting area. The common area is very large with multiple group seating arrangements, a pool table, a refrigerator, a snack/beverage table, and a large stone fireplace. The Winston House is located in the western valley of Lookout Mountain, a nice place to get away from it all, but with some local shopping/restaurants in the quaint nearby Mentone Community. We would definitely choose Winston Place again. NOTE: I have seen some reviews that mention the train. Yes, it does run in front of the property, but the rumble and sound of the train was not disturbing in the least.

Our anniversary stay with the Bunches was unforgettable! Their hospitality was over the top, breakfasts were generous and timed to fit our schedule. Jim is quite a cook. We made new friends and enjoyed the area. Who knew there is an antiquing trail of 7 stores there? We will be going back to address antiques more thoroughly. And we will again be staying at Winston Place. Highly recommended. I can't think of any cons for the trip.
5 on October 28, 2014
We greatly appreciated the hospitality and warm hearty welcome from Jim and Leslie. Our wedding was to take place at 4 p.m. so we needed a little extra time to dress and the Winston Place was the perfect setting and an hour early arrival was extended to us. The photographer came and took several shots at this beautiful home prior to departure to the chapel. The room was very well appointed. The bed large and comfortable. Wood shudders allowed us a later than usual wake up time as the light from outside was completely blocked. Breakfast was hot and seasoned perfectly with plenty of coffee and endless refill of OJ from our host. We highly recommend a night or two stay at Winston Place with Jim and Leslie.

We had a great one night stay at Winston Place. Jim and Leslie were away, but they left Faye in charge and she was phenomenal! I assume if they hire staff as attentive as she is, then they must be the same way. Upon arrival, she gave us the grand tour, told us some stories about the house, and settled on the morning menu. When she asked my favorite food, I jokingly replied "rice!". It is true, but it was not expected for breakfast. Well....to my surprise she had it ready for me the next morning. The food was great and the bed was really comfortable. I loved that we had access to the porch from our room as well. We enjoyed playing pool downstairs after heading to town for dinner. It is in a peaceful area, but there are train tracks. It did take some getting used to, but the other guest assured me that after the first night, you don't even hear it. I would have to agree as it didn't bother me later in the night. Even so, it's better than staying in some random chain hotel! The service is much better too. Also, it's close to a state park and a national preserve for hiking/swimming as well.

We hosted a reception following the High School Reunion for Valley Head HS. We felt as if we were hosting at our own antebellum mansion. Faye was wonderful, helped with our setup, allowed our guests to tour the house (without interfering with the other guests) and help, mostly did... our clean up. Great experience. We look forward to making it an annual event.

Beautiful antebellum home full of history! Just what we were expecting! Comfortable accommodations and the hosts were very enjoyable to talk to. Definitely recommend it!
2.8 on August 16, 2014
The home is beautiful but unfortunately could use some upkeep and a deep cleaning. When we arrived, the house smelled unpleasant, but it wasn't from age. A Scentsy would really help. It's important to know, also, that a train runs just outside the front yard TWICE during the night. Breakfast is adequate but not very well cooked in the stunningly lovely dining room. There were scrambled eggs, bacon, and an oven baked French toast with juice and coffee served on beautiful dishes. This was my favorite room of the house. The double verandas were amazing to sit out on and several rooms had their own door to the balcony. The house is very interesting to see if you like history as much of it is original, but remember this house is nearly 200 years old. Floors shake, and doors closed downstairs make the beds upstairs tremble. I am glad I went because the house is beautiful and so is the area just a few miles outside Ft. Payne and right below the famous Lookout Mountain, but I would not stay again. The photos make it look better than it is. I have to say the owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

We stayed at Winston Place while visiting the area. It was wonderful location for visiting Ft. Payne, Mentone, DeSoto Falls, and Little River Canyon National Preserve. Jim, Leslie, and Jean made us feel very welcome and special. We have stayed in numerous B&B's and loved this one enough to return if we are ever in NE Alabama again. Our room was large except for a very small bathroom. We loved sitting on the veranda outside of our room. Jim's breakfasts were wonderful with more than you could eat of eggs, French toast, bacon, biscuits, fruit, and that southern tradition of grits. The only negative that we experienced was the passing of several trains during the night on our first night. the second night only one passed by. As I said, we would return if we are ever in the area again.

My husband and I just got back from the Winston Place to celebrate our anniversary, and we couldn't be happier with our decision to stay there. The hospitality and food were wonderful. The breakfast was so filling that we didn't eat anything until dinner that night. The house was beautiful with an abundance of history throughout the entire house. We are already looking at the calendar to see when we can visit again. Mark and Stephanie Bria

We enjoyed our night at the Bed and Breakfast, we got the full history of the house which was enjoyable as well as great recommendations of places to eat and things to do in the area. It was our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast, and we definitely have high standards from now on. We hope to return in the fall when the trees are so colorful! Definitely a neat place to stay!

We had an amazing weekend. Leslie and Ms. Faye made our stay so enjoyable and the food was fantastic. When we left my wife made the remark that it felt like we were leaving family. Best stuffed french toast ever!! His tour of the home along with its history is a must.....I enjoyed casual coffee in the kitchen with Leslie, the other guests, and an endless plate of cookies. If the opportunity arises I will definitely stay again. Debbie F.

My wife and I spent 2.5 days at the Winston Place and boy did we hit the jackpot. The scenery is second to none if you love Northern Alabama as we do. Nestled in a valley Winston Place offers charm, elegance and outstanding hospitality. The owners, Jim and Leslie Bunch, along with their sweet sidekicks, Faye and Earnest Ross bend over backwards to make you feel like you are their family. The evening spent on the spacious front porch make all worthwhile. BTW, Jim makes a mean cup of coffee, not to mention Faye's killer blackberry cobbler. As far points of interest, Valley Head has it all, including it's own history which Leslie will gladly tell you about. All in all, we have some new friends and will be back later this fall when the maples are in full strut. Thanks Jim, Leslie, Faye and Earnest for making my wife's birthday "the best birthday I have ever had." Not much need to add any more.

We had the most incredible stay at Winston Place....a definite highlight on our vacation. The owner spent time with us talking about the history of the home, which was facinating, followed by a tour. In the evening when the fireflies appeared outside our children were able to walk the ground catching them and watching them glow. It was perfect. In the morning the breakfast was fantastic, coupled with great company and hospitality. \e can't say enough good things about this place, the owner and the history.

Winston Place is so beautiful, and so peaceful... it just seems my heart rate slows a little when we pull in the drive! Love the rooms, love the grounds, love the people. The interior is mostly decorated in antiques. The room we stayed in was very comfortable and looked great. The great thing about the Winston is not every room is set back in time. They have a sunroom room that is modern. It has a large screen TV and a pool table. The owner "Jim" was great. He was very helpful in make reservations for dinner and telling us about the area. The breakfast was to die for. I could have eaten the baked french toast till I burst. We will definitely go back.
