  • 7 cups flour White, whole wheat or 1/2 of each
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 quart Buttermilk


  1. mix the dry ingredients together several times. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk gradually, mixing in the flour from the sides. Turn on to a floured board and knead lightly for a few minutes. form into a round cake. Cross the top, brush with milk and put into a hot oven on a baking tin for about for about 40 minutes at 400 F. Just handle the mix very lightly when mixing I We cross the top of the soda bread to stop it from cracking in the baking. Cut over the sides to be sure of this. If your not sure if the brad is cooked then the real test is to tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow, its done.
