Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or 10 individual ramekins.
To make the topping: Melt butter or margarine. Combine the flour, brown sugar, and oatmeal together and stir in the melted butter with a fork. Mixture should be crumbly.
To make the filling: Combine the cherries, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, almond extract, and salt and spoon into the prepared baking dish(es).
Sprinkle the topping over the filling. Bake for about 40-45 minutes for a 9x13 inch dish or 30 minutes for ramekins, or until crumble topping is golden brown and the fruit juice is bubbling at the edges.
Note: For a quick version, you can substitute 2 cans of cherry pie filling for the filling ingredients. This recipe works with any fruit pie filling- apple, peach, or raspberry.
