Walking Iron Bed and Breakfast
-
Walking Iron Bed and Breakfast, after an extensive 9 year restoration, opened to travelers around the globe. Boasting four elegantly appointed guest rooms, all with private baths and double whirlpools, Walking Iron B&B blends history with luxury!
The year was 1865; the nation was mourning the loss of Abraham Lincoln, an eighteen-year-old boy named Edison was launching his career, and an enterprising barrel cooper from Milwaukee named William Thompson journeyed to Mazomanie and began building his stately home. Taken in 1873, this picture and many others like it, were used in the detail-driven full restoration of the brick Italianate...seven years were spent replicating the 216 balusters contained in the wrap-around porch! If you want to immerse yourself in real history, escape to Walking Iron B&B!
Inspired by art nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha, Clara's Veranda blends the exquisite detail of nature with a dreamy sense of escape. Retreat into your garden-themed room of generous proportions...the king-sized scrolled iron bed with full canopy...the private bath, complete with double whirlpool and marble-tiled shower. Surrounded by whimsical architectural antiques and hand-painted tiles, you'll savor the passage of time! Step through the French doors and onto Clara's Veranda...your private garden haven!

Enter your room through Doctor Kester's re-created turn-of-the-century study - medical journals, stethoscope and top hat set neatly upon the desk, a crank wall phone and calendar situated as if the doctor just stepped out for a housecall. Step under the arch and into the bedroom with Rococo gold and cream wallpaper, queen-sized brass bed with cast cherubs, past the remote-controlled fireplace, and into your cozy private bath. If you love to shower, this is your room! A large two-person shower, featuring separate controls, body sprays and the hand-made English tile version of "A Coign of Vantage" by Lawrence Alma-Tadema make this the ultimate showering experience!
This room is named for Lenora Kester, the Doctor's wife who lived in the house from 1899 to 1954 and especially enjoyed her gardens. The room overlooks a perennial garden and features a Victorian floral decor. World travel is the theme here, making this a perfect room to relax and reflect. A king-sized full-canopied iron bed, large private bath, English Art-Nouveau shower tiles and wicker furniture create a peaceful, comfortable atmosphere. Surrounding the corner whirlpool are hand-cast plaster cartouches depicting morning and night.

Named after the builder of our home and decorated in the Italianate style, the William Thompson Room contains rich burgundy wallpaper, regal carpet, hand-painted lincrusta frieze and ceiling medallion. Central to the room is a queen-sized half-canopied iron bed with pillow-topped mattress.
The Thompson room's adjoining private bath features classic-styled fixtures, ceramic floor tile and six-foot double whirlpool, giving this room a sense of royalty.
The Black Earth Creek, just yards from your room! Sit in the swing and savor the passage of time...
Our coziest room, Alsie's early American decor will take you to a simpler, quieter time...the quilted queen-sized iron bed sits calmly amid antiques: the crackled pitcher and bowl, faded immigrant's trunk, and Scandinavian memoirs are all reminders of what might have been Alsie Peterson's, the home's Danish domestic servant in the 1870's. Her room would have been a welcomed respite after her household duties, a comfortable space to call her own! With a private entrance and small full bath, make Alsie's Retreat your personal retreat! Located on the first floor.
Crack open a book and enjoy the two formal parlors.

We loved our quiet, relaxing stay here, from the beautiful accommodations to 3 walks in town in 1 day (!) to the sauna to the welcoming other guests and host to the general ambience of quiet. We'll come back.

The rennovation of this historic home has resulted in a perfect Bed and Breakfast. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. Our room (Doctor's Study ) was comfortable and unique. Breakfast was superior. It is close to the Frank Lloyd Wright house and House on the Rock, and also Madison. Walk to the Old Feed Mill for dinner. It is also great.
4.8 out of 5Relaxing Saturday afternoon and evening
November 17, 2012
I had hoped that we could spend the weekend, but it turned out to be only 16 hours from 3 pm Saturday afternoon until 7 am Sunday morning. But, it was the most relaxing 16 hours that my wife and I had since July 4th (another b&b outing). Everything ~yes everything~ at Walking Iron Bed and Breakfast was perfect. Need I say more?

We spent an anniversary weekend in this beautiful part of Wisconsin, topped off by this elegant, warm, and welcoming B&B. The owners are engaging, yet respectful of the privacy of guests. Lovely having coffee on the wrap around porch accessible from the patio doors in our room prior to the delicious breakfast. We would definitely recommend Walking Iron Bed and Breakfast.

My wife and I have stayed at the Walking Iron several times and have never been disappointed by anything. We have stayed in many BnB's all around the country and we have not found one that compares in value, comfort and quality. The best place for a romantic get away hands down!
