Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation

  • Inn Details

In Williamsburg's James River Plantation Country you can step back in time with a visit to PINEY GROVE AT SOUTHALL'S PLANTATION - 1790. The Gordineer family graciously welcomes you to their National Register landmark: This historic site is actually an enclave of authentically restored buildings which includes Piney Grove (1790), Ashland (1835), Dower Quarter (1835), Ladysmith (1857) and Duck Church (1917). Each building is furnished with family heirlooms, antiques and artifacts that chronicle the history of the houses and the entire plantation country. You will arrive to Mint Juleps or Hot Toddies, depending on the season. Turn-down service includes, nightcaps, romantic music and wood-fires (in cooler months). Each morning the farm bell announces the candlelight plantation breakfast served in the 1790 Log Room. The grounds include a pool, nature trail, lawn games and barnyard of animals. Spacious guest rooms with private baths are situated in Ladysmith. Modern conveniences, such as air-conditioning, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and hair dryers, are inconspicuously placed in each room. Fine regional dining is available nearby at Charles City Tavern, Courthouse Grille and the Blue Heron Restaurant. On many Saturday afternoons guests may join the JAMES RIVER PLANTATION PROGRESSIVE CANDLELIGHT TOUR: This two-hour guided tour is given by a family member and concludes with goodies and refreshments.

Our stay at Piney Grove was a perfectly romantic treat. Our room glowed with warmth from a beautiful fire and a rose awaited me! Our Valentine's turndown featured Hershey Kisses!! We took part in a special 2-hour progressive house tour offered by the inn - It was a treat with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries served by a roaring fire. Following the tour we had a five-minute drive to the quaint Courthouse Grille - a casual restaurant in a restored country store. The country breakfast the following morning was more than we could ask for, and served in the original plantation home.

Piney Grove is just outside Williamsburg along Route 5 plantation road. The B&B is so peaceful with the sounds of birds, owls and geese. Our room was a suite on the first floor that had one large room and a smaller cozy room - It was perfect for my mother who was with us. Breakfast was served at a large plantation table by candlelight and we were called by a farm bell. Our host gave us excellent recommendations for local dining and touring in Williamsburg and at the plantations. The owners also offer a special 2-hour tour of the homes that make up the inn and their residences - We loved it.
