The Patriot Inn Bed and Breakfast

  • Inn Details

""""""""""AS VIEWED ON HGTV RESTORE AMERICA"""""""""" The Patriot Inn is an architectural gem built in 1784, located in the Olde Towne Portsmouth historical district. The busy Elizabeth River waterfront is reflected in the hand blown windowpanes, just as it has been for over 200 years. Shopping and Antiquing on High Street are just a few steps away, as are the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the Tidewater Yacht Marina, and the ferry to Norfolk. This Colonial, English half-basement with Federal influences, rests on foundations of another dwelling dating to 1772. According to official documents, Thorowgood Keeling, a first lieutenant in the Virginia Militia, built the current dwelling in 1784. The earliest known owner of this property was Reverend John Agnew, a Tory Chaplain, who was a colonist loyal to King George III. The Revolutionary War plays an important role in molding the history of Olde Towne Portsmouth. General Cornwallis, whose headquarters were in Olde Towne Portsmouth, decided to relocate his troops to Yorktown and loaded them on boats in front of the Patriot Inn. As the exterior of the Inn reflects colonial architectural details, the interior is discreetly decorated offering interesting corners to relax and enjoy the tranquility that permeates this lovely old Inn. With the orginal heart of pine wood floors, the stately main staircase, and the wonderfully carved mantles, the Inn is filled with furnishings that enables guests to step back in time and experience the spirit of colonial America. All bed chambers are attractively decorated and furnished with lots of historic charm in period style antiques and reproductions. All beds are nuzzled in goose down comforters and pillows.

The Patriot Inn is located across the street from the Portsmouth Visitor Center and the ferry which runs to Norfolk. We stayed in the Agnew Room which had a comfortable bed and attached bathroom. The inn is a few blocks from restaurants in Old Town Portsmouth. We only stayed one night at the Inn but the breakfast there was the best meal of our 4-day trip. The wine and cheese at 5 o'clock gives a chance to chat with other guests and the hosts.

Wow! This was so fun for us! We stayed here for our anniversary. The employees are very pleasant, and the rooms are so nice. At night, we walked across the street and took advantage of the ferry; it will take you to Norfolk for dining and shopping, and makes frequent runs late into the night. In the morning- eat breakfast until your tummy is content! Leave your car parked at the Inn, and walk 4 blocks down to High Street for more shopping and dining. We ate lunch while we watched a movie at the historic Commodore Theatre (but get there early, because you must have reservations, and seating is limited). Overall, The Patriot Inn is a great location for a nice 24 hour getaway! JC & Melissa Suffolk, VA

Our first stay at the Patriot, but we'll be back. Portsmouth is a wonderful place to visit and Ron and Verle were fine hosts. Be sure and get the whole history of the Patriot from Ron or Verle. The house is beautifully decorated and convenient to restaurants and sights in Portsmouth. Be sure to walk around Olde Towne and enjoy dinner at one of High Street's excellent restaurants. The Weiss's will help you pick, but don't miss breakfast at the Patriot. Norfolk is a short scenic ferry ride starting right across the street, and the ferry is a fine way to see the riverfront of both cities. Christopher and Suzanne Wright
