Loved this place! Just what I was looking for in a b&b. Charming, clean and cozy. Would stay there again.

My daughter and I recently stayed at this lovely B and B while on a college tour. Kathy and Derrick were wonderful hosts, and Josh took particular care of us at breakfast, remembering my gluten issues. It was delicious! It was a true treat to stay in a historical home. Thank you! We look forward to our next visit.

The people there were very nice but was a little disappointed in the cost for the lodging. The place is cute and historical but somewhat rough looking on the outside.

We enjoyed a great night at Boxwood Inn! They were incredibly accommodating--we were late arrivals and early risers, and were completely flexible with us, not to mention kind and welcoming. Our room was lovely and very comfortable. Note, however, that the inn is very close to train tracks, and we were woken a few times throughout the night by a passing train. It didn't bother us, but it's something to keep in mind if you have trouble falling back asleep once awake.

Cathy& family did a great job w/ my nieces reception! The food was great! Breakfast was great! Only thing I would say is when serving waffle or pancakes bring out a gravy dish so that we can put as much or as we like! Love this place! Lots of history here.

We recently stayed while visiting a son in the area. The hosts were delightful and oh so thoughtful. The inn itself is an older building and is more comfortable than modern or upscale. Everything was available for our comfort and ease of stay and the breakfasts were amazing. Lots of interesting history in the building and the area.
We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us! We enjoyed having you and we hope to see you again very soon!

Across the railroad tracks from the first steam engine to rumble into Newport News in 1896, the Boxwood Inn has been around for a long time. Once the center of civic and commercial activity in Newport News, the 21-room housed a post office, a general store and the hall of records. There are rap-around porches, and peaceful grounds. Breakfasts were delicious. We had: - Apple walnut waffles with fresh sausage - Fresh garden frittata with fresh garden onions, sweet peppers, spinach, and a homemade brochette, with ham and homemade biscuits - Cranberry orange French toast with a cranberry orange syrup and fresh whipped cream, and bacon Inn-keeper Kathy's offered us a free upgrade to a suite. We had a bedroom, small sitting room and three-quarter bath. No less than 15 ghosts have been "documented" to enjoy the Boxwood Inn. This is the heart of Baptist country, so the Boxwood Inn doesn’t emphasized its undead denizens on its website... but they regularly hold paranormal evenings. Kathy hears footsteps going up and down the stairs all the time, voices quietly singing or humming, and once as she was interacting with business people, someone was pulling the hair on the back of her head. So back to the reference to My Cousin Vinny; the wonderful comedy with Joe Pesci and the luscious Marisa Tomei. Vinny is successively awakened at the crack of dawn by a lumber mill steam whistle, and delivery of hogs, and then twice by a train rushing by. Well, the Boxwood Inn is perhaps 150 feet from some active railroad tracks, and each time the train rumbles by, it is obliged by law to sound its horn. If you love this sort of thing, and the wonderful rumble of the railroad cars, it is just yet more of the marvelous character of this place. If however you are a light sleeper and don't want to be awakened in the morning, this place may not be the place for you. (Note, reading all of the guest book entries, we never saw a single criticism of the trains.)
Thank you very much for your great review of our inn! We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us; we enjoyed your visit as well! We are glad that you enjoyed your breakfasts! Thank you again and we (and our “long-term guests”) hope to see you again soon!

This was our 2nd visit to the Boxwood Inn and I can honestly say the experience was just as pleasant if not better! I only say better because we knew what to expect and was delighted that nothing in terms of hospitality and service had changed. In fact, it was better! My husband and I were looking for a quiet evening in to catch up on much needed rest and alone time. We got both. We called ahead the day before and asked that a homemade Italian meal be prepared for us by their in-house chef who just happens to be the Innkeeper's son. He prepared a meal for us our first visit and we could barely wait to taste his next one. It was delicious. Better than anything I have ever had in a restaurant. It's obvious that he has pride in his cooking as well he should. He is very talented. You can even go for just a meal without staying. But, I would recommend you do both. It somehow completes the experience when you are able to walk down the stairs from your own room, be seated next to a warm fireplace and served a meal fit for the God! Do yourself a favor and have a night or two away at a place where comfort and hospitality are what Ms, Kathy and Mr. Derek strive for and succeed on every level!
Thank you for your very kind words! We are very happy to hear that you had such a wonderful and relaxing time at our inn! It was absolutely our pleasure! We look forward to seeing you both again very soon!

This is a very nice Inn, Barbara and Bob are simply the best. The food is outstanding and her culinary skills and talents did not go unnoticed. The Inn and the grounds are to die for, and the price is right. You will not be disappointed if you stay here I promise.

My husband and I have stayed here 3 times and each time it is always such a delight!!! The food is outstanding, wonderful hospitality and the rooms beautiful. We always recommend this place to friends. And they love it too. Their couples friday night package is the best deal on the East Coast! Enjoy! We did!

Barbara was an amazing hostess at a beautiful inn! We took advantage of her teacher's discount to spend a couple of nights and were treated like royality. The outstanding breakfasts of pancakes with strawberries, bananas and ice cream and monte cristo were delicious! It is a little off the main drag, but that is part of the charm. Don't miss this one!

I would recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone or everyone. The food was to die for and the southern hospitality was the best. My husband and I felt like we were home.

It was a wonderful stay close to home, yet it felt like we were miles away. It was truly and excellent place that made us feel extra special. It was a perfect romantic getaway that we needed after my husband came home from Iraq.
