The Stonewall Jackson Inn Bed & Breakfast

It was such a pleasure staying at the Stonewall Jackson meeting old family friends for a reunion of sorts. The Inn is accommodating, clean, and comfortable, but the warm and family like atmosphere was felt and appreciated from the moment we pulled into the property. We are already planning a trip back in the fall and hope to stay there again. Thank you Jonathan and Wayne for a great time!

Beautiful home within walking distances to downtown Harrisonburg. We enjoyed the day on the deck and walked downtown for dinner. The room was great and very comfy. Spent one very restful night at Stonewall Jackson B&B, Harrisonburg, VA. I have been to many B&B's and this one is at the top of my favorite list. Johnathan greeted us as we came in and we found him to be the most personable young man who immediately made us feel right at home. Our breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented. Although my wife and I were half sick, we still very much enjoyed our 22nd anniversary at Stonewall Jackson (mid May). The B&B itself (and our room) was beautifully laid out and decorated. The beds were comfortable (my wife said she hadn't slept that well in a long time), and the rooms had interesting books to browse in the realms of history and philosophy/psychology. It was raining, so we drove 5 minutes to the historic downtown area and ate at Clementine's, a uniquely decorated restaurant/bar with live music in the evenings. (I use "unique" as a complement - the walls were covered with interesting "found art" and splashes of color.) The night was quiet aside from the sounds of cars whooshing by. We had our windows open. My wife slept well though I, a light sleeper, had to use ear plugs. Breakfast was what one should expect at a good B&B: good food, upscale country setting, and good rapport with the wait staff. I could have lounged there much longer sipping tea, conversing about psychology (the owner is a James Madison professor), and reading the newspaper (provided), but "had" to go wine tasting. Lastly, Stonewall Jackson B&B was much more reasonably priced than most others I saw in the Charlottesville/Harrisonburg area. - Sincerely, Doug & Holly

A fine thank you for this review. Its so helpful to all our guests to get a feel for the home we have created and others experiences can offer just that. Thank you for mentioning the comfortable beds and for you appreciation of the small details (interesting reading materials) we work hard to make available to our guests. I was sorry to read about your difficulty with noises at night. Our unique location only minutes from downtown faces the main street into historic Harrisonburg. I wish we known beforehand and been able to suggest one of our other room options. During your next visit I would recommend our Stuart and Pickett rooms located at the back of the house. Their location offers a very quiet atmosphere with windows overlooking our acre of property complete with the original barn from the 1800s. And as you were able to research our competitive rates make all our room choices very attractive. I know we enjoyed conversing with you over breakfast as much as you did. There is little that can compare, though a trip through the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah in the spring on your way to visit and taste our outstanding vineyards is not a bad start :). We look forward to many more wining and dining experiences with you and another opportunity to outdo ourselves and maybe tick off all those stars. Come back and see us soon.

We chose to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B for our first year anniversary, and it couldn’t have been a better pick! The staff was exceedingly wonderful, and even surprised us with cupcakes to celebrate. They also helped my husband surprise me with two dozen roses in our room one night. The staff had great suggestions on dinner options and things to do in the area. The breakfasts were amazing! The best breakfasts we’ve had in a very long time. The rooms were also cozy and comfortable. We will definitely be coming back to the Stonewall Jackson; I have a feeling this is the first of many visits.

My friend and I stayed here during our recent visit to JMU, and had a great time! The recommendations from the staff for food, tours, etc. were great, and they made us feel like our visit was the best thing that happened to them - truly exceptional and sincere service. If you're visiting JMU, anywhere nearby, or just passing through, this place will make your trip much more relaxing and enjoyable.

My boyfriend and I stayed here one night during a weekend getaway into the Shenandoah. Our friendly hosts greeted us at the door, and innkeeper Wayne came downstairs to say hello, too. Our room was clean and comfortable, and we had a delicious breakfast of eggs benedict. The staff threw in some nice Valentine's treats—cake pops that we could snack on when we arrived, and a tasty punch with our breakfast. Also a great value price compared with other inns in we considered, especially for a holiday weekend (plus, it was nice that we weren't required to stay two nights and could be flexible.) Hope to make it back here someday.

The rooms at the historic Stonewall Jackson Inn are well-furnished, comfortable and quiet; the breakfast is scrumptious; and the large parlor is a perfect place to relax and browse the rich selection of books and other information about the history of the area, or meet and chat with other guests. Having never experienced a B&B, I didn't know what to expect. However, the friendly staff soon put us at ease by walking us through the registration process and the tour of the facility. The room was comfortable and the food was outstanding. Wayne, the owner introduced himself and we felt totally at ease talking to him as did we with all of the staff. We felt welcome there. They even helped us out with restaurants in the local area. Totally enjoyed our time and look forward to experiencing this again. Thanks!!!!

Stayed 4 nights--apparently that is rare as they only serve 2 breakfast items on alternating days. Wayne and staff are very nice. Location is walkable to downtown. 30-40 minutes to Shenandoah Natl. Park. If you like new and shiny, not your place. Road noise is heavy in early AM so take room in back of property away from truck route in front. I booked here after reading many reviews. I almost feel I may havestayed in a different B&B. This is an interesting place but in our estimation not a 5 star experience.

The staff could not be friendlier. Great location, too. A little disappointed that it sits on such a busy street - the photo is misleading, but I do understand the reason. The architecture is lovely, and some of the furnishings quite nice.

When we arrived it was an unsually hot weekend in the mountains of Virginia. The windows downstairs in the B&B were open with a nice breeze. The rooms were air conditioned though! The service was excellent. Frank was very accomadating with a bottle of cold water ready for us! I loved the B&B and enjoyed our visit very much! Hope to come back again!

The staff are sweet and friendly and make you feel right at home. The rooms are neatly kept and the food is delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed having breakfast on the deck every morning and being greeted by warm smiles. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this B&B to others.

Mu husband and I chose the Stonewall jackson Inn because of it's location and proximity to the center of Harrisonburg and the local vineyards. Little did we know that the small thunderstorm would turn out to to be a major Noreaster that claimed a path form North Carolina to New Jersey. We were without power off and on, but Wayne and his crew did their best to ensure our safety and comfort were met. We did not know the extreme outcome of the storm until the morning. Beautiful cerilian blue skies were met with downed trees, no power and lack of air conditioning throughout the area. Our stay with Wayne, Frank, Martha Jo and crew was wonderful and comforting. We will definitely come back, hopefully without envisioning the wicked witch on her broom!

Owner and staff made you feel at home. Very laid back. Relaxing. Excellent food. Super service. Will be back.

We arrived after 9PM, very tired after driving many hours (and over the mountain) to be greated by Q who has a smile and winning way about her that made us immediately relaxed and welcomed. As our stay progressed it only got better. The Inn is immaculate and beautiful, as is the surrounding area. There I met my future granddaughter (my financee's daughter's child) who melted my heart. After 5 hours of watching Dora the Explorer Saves the Ice Princess, and other great stories, we went to sleep. The next morning we were greeted by Wayne and Frank to a wonderful breakfast. Day one was his excellent french toast with the trimmings, day 2 we were served the best eggs benedict that I ever had! And my future grandchild had outstanding waffles, which Frank volunteered to cut up and sprinkle with powered sugar. Not only did I receive a Grandpa's (for father's day) card for the first time in my 62 years, without a doubt the best service/food as well. Thank you all, and we look forward to returning very soon!!!

The inn is located in Harrisonburg right in the historic district on beautiful grounds. Very lovely home on beautiful grounds.

My husband and I have 2 small children and we recently stayed here at The Stonewall Jackson Inn. What a welcome we received....!!!!! The staff Martha Jo, Q and Frank were friendly, helpful and extremely accomodating. Wayne the owner was also very nice, we felt like family members, who came home to visit. The room was beautiful and clean. The whole property is gorgeous. Breakfast was delicious, I loved the french toast croissant. I can't thank you all enough for making our stay so pleasant. We will be back for sure!!!

Loved Harrisonburg and the Stonewall Inn. the room was clean, well decorated and the hostess and owner were terrific. They could not have been more welcoming. The breakfast was hot, delicious and really hit the spot. Would stop again without question and will recommend it to friends.

Wayne and Martha Jo are incredible people who take great pride and effort to ensure that you personally have a great stay. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Frank & Q, two of the nicest, most sincere people my wife and I have ever met. That just set the tone for an unforgettable stay. The room was excellent, and served as a great spot for our in-room massage by Andre, a true professional. I would recommend this place to everyone who plans on visiting James Madison University (located in the town of Harrisonburg) or who plans on hiking/driving through the Shenandoah National Park (about 20 min away) or who just needs a place to sleep while passing through the I-81 corridor of western Virginia. My thanks to Wayne & Martha Jo and Frank & Q for an incredible weekend.

Innkeepers were very friendly and helpful. The room and house interior was very clean. For the cost of the room, I'd say everything else was a bit lacking. Again, these comments are compared to other B&Bs where we've stayed that were similar in price: breakfast was satisfactory but not "great"; coffee was extremely weak; while the room provided the necessary comfort, the details needed work - paint, furniture quality and decorating; artwork on the walls left a bit to desire; front porch very dirty, cluttered and "uninviting"; tent in place over rear deck seemed "odd" and a bit out of place; Again, my wife might have tempered a few of these comments, but in general, the place was nice, comfortable for sleeping (not for sitting in the room and reading though), and the innkeeper/employees were very nice and helpful.

My boyfriend and I spent our Valentine's Day weekend here- it was our first B&B, but I think it is safe to say they have set the bar very high. Food was phenomenal, service was amazing, the staff very friendly. We couldn't have asked for a better experience, and will stay here again if we return to Harrisonburg.

I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn a few weeks ago while passing through on tour. What a fabulous place and staff! Very friendly, clean, and the tastiest food I've ever had at a B&B. Thank you guys! I'll totally look you up next time I'm traveling through Harrisonburg.

The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. The breakfast was excellent. I would definitely reccomend this in to anyone.

We were greeted by the smiling faces and upbeat energy of Erin and Holly. They led us to the sitting room where we checked in and then led us to our room, the Stonewall Jackson Suite, and made sure we knew where everything was and recommended local restaurants for dinner. After we perused the provided binder containing local menus, we decided to drive the short distance to the Clementine. Let me tell you, it was perfect. Local art adorning the walls, alive with happy customers ranging from JMU students to families. The food from apps to dessert was superb! Also, Wayne, the SJB&B owner had given us a business card to show our server for free dessert. We thought it would be one to share, but it ended up being good for all three of us to have free dessert! Then, back to the B&B for a sound night’s sleep. My wife and I were in the comfy king sized bed and our 13 year old daughter was quite satisfied on her futon. When morning came, we smelled the aromas of our breakfast being prepared by Holly and Erin downstairs. Having asked us what time we wished to eat the night before, we sauntered down about 10 minutes early to enjoy some coffee first. Breakfast was really tasty. My only ? was that it was advertised as “A Breakfast to Remember”. Actually, it was a fruit/yogurt cup, French toast made from homemade bread and a sausage patty. I’m a big guy so when Erin said they had more, I happily accepted another piece of French toast. As it would be the only meal we would have at the inn, I guess I expected a bit more than this rather meager plate. Yes, it was tasty and lovingly prepared, but I was hungry within the next couple of hours. Would we go again? Likely to Harrisonburg, but I may pay less for a room at the Hampton Inn and go to Shoney’s down the hill for a big boy breakfast, and still likely save a few bucks in the process. I do wish Wayne and his staff all the best!

My fiance and I stopped for one night on our way down from CT to North Carolina. The location was great - right off of 81, and we were greeted with a warm welcome upon our arrival. We received a little tour, which included a trip to the kitchen area where water and soda was available for us at any point during our stay. We stayed in the Sheridan room, located on the second floor. The room was very clean and neatly decorated .... I honestly felt like we were staying at a friend's house. The room was very spacious, and had its own thermostat so you can have the temp just how you like it! My one and only critique was that the mattress was a little hard for my taste - but to each their own! The area is extremely quiet, and we didn't hear any of the other guests throughout our stay. In the morning, we awoke to the delicious aroma of muffins and fresh bread baking and went down for our breakfast. Coffee, OJ, fruit/yogurt/granola cup, eggs, bacon, home fries, and muffins were cooked just for us. Yum!! I would definitely recommend The Stonewall Jackson Inn to anyone looking for a 'home away from home' experience. We enjoyed our stay, and would happily return if we find ourselves traveling through the area again.

We had a great weekend at the Stonewall Jackson. The innkeeper, Wayne, was very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, but also private. The breakfast was incredible; both presentation and preparation were phenomenal. We are looking forward to going back.

I stayed in Town shortly before Christmas and chose the hotel due to its location within walking distance of town center and its original looking style. The welcome was warm and friendly, the accomodation was very comfortable and I started the day with a great breakfast. I can recommend the Stonewall Jackson, its a comfortable friendly place to stay.

We just spent a weekend of heavenly smells and tastes at this quaint inn. the innkeeper (David) couldn't have been more interesting and willing to help us find our way around this college town. There was a very homey feel to Stonewall Jackson Inn. 'Twas a complete pleasure.

My Boyfriend and I were traveling from Atlanta to Allentown, Pennsylvania and chose the Stonewall Jackson Inn as a stopping point in the trek home for Thanksgiving. We were running behind schedule an didn't arrive until around 9pm David (great innkeeper and cook!!) was there waiting for us to arrive. He gave us a tour of the inn and suggested some amazing places to eat around town. The Inn is located within walking distance of some great restaurants. While there are some great finer dining places it was the night before Thanksgiving so we chose to do a little pub crawl of the town. JB's and BJ's were two of our favorites. Huge selection of beers, smoked wings, and burgers. We stayed in the Chamberlain room which is located at the front of the house. The bed was wonderful and the room was very clean. Breakfast was amazing. David is a phenomenal cook. We had yogurt and fruit, croissant French toast, bacon, tarragon eggs, and Apple compote. Really really yummy!! Wayne (owner) and David were both superb hosts. We had a nice chat about the history of the inn with them before breakfast and a little tour around the inn. Couldn’t have asked for a more memorable and relaxing place to stay. Thank you Wayne and David!!

This was a wonderful decision, made wonderful by the staff and the property. Very welcoming and friendly owners and staff, great location, and amazing breakfast. I wish I had known it would be so good, I would have booked a longer stay. Now that I know, definitely coming back again. 5 stars all around.

This was our first time staying at a Bed and Breakfast. It was like visiting a new friend's home. We spent a quiet evening, relaxing and reading. A late-night trek to the deserted, yet well-lit kitchen found cocoa and other beverages available. Breakfast the next morning was delicious! --The Hoffmans

We stayed for 2 nights in this beautifully furnished Inn. The staff is super friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel at home (especially David). Our room was spotless as was the rest of the Inn. There were two beds in our room, and although we only used one, it was a bit odd that there's an extra charge if the second bed is used. The room also had a small tv and wifi is available. The location was very convenient, within walking distance to the downtown area and a 5 minute car ride to JMU. We ate two hearty and delicious breakfasts sitting on the veranda surrounded by morning glory blooms. We plan to return next time we are in the area.

The risk of choosing a bed and breakfast from its website lies in the things the site doesn't disclose: the gas station across the street, the noisy refrigeration at the fish market next door; the squeaky floors and rattling pipes. We found NO undisclosed drawbacks at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Its website provides an accurate and, to our experience, complete description of its facilities and its considerable charm. We recommend the inn highly.

We enjoyed our time at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. David was very helpful with restaurant recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed. Excellent breakfast each morning!!

My bf and I got back from our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn last weekend and we had a great time! Originally we planned to go the prior weekend but I had a conflict with my schedule keeping me from going out of town. I was able to switch our reservation to the following weekend with no problem. On that Friday night then we arrived much later than planned but were still given a warm welcome from David. I enjoyed the Civil War motif throughout the inn. We stayed in the Sheridan room, plenty of space but also cozy. The floors squeaked some, but is to be expected with any older home. I found this B&B to be right on par with others I have stayed at. This was my bf's first experience at a B&B and he said that he would definitely go back. Having control of your temp in each room was a plus. Breakfast was delicious and the very generous portions kept us full well into the afternoon.

Very nice people...definitely a B&B to consider for your next travel

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is conveniently located within walking distance of Harrisonburg, VA. It has a gravel parking. You need to walk up steps to enter the house. There are two rooms on the ground floor, but both of these have noise issues. The other rooms involve climbing stairs. I stayed in the Belle Boyd room, on the ground floor, directly across the hall from the kitchen. I did not expect to hear loud voices at 6:45 a.m.,coming from the kitchen, while breakfast was being prepared. There is no sound insulation between this room and the kitchen. If I had not already been awake, this would not have been a pleasant way to wake up. Unlike most facilities that charge for two people per ROOM, this establishment charges an extra $15.00 if a second bed is used in the room, regardless of the size of that extra bed. Breakfast was tasty, but not exceptional considering the cost of staying here. The charge for two people, in one room, each sleeping in a full size bed, was $180.69 for one night. The only amenities were water, soda and hot tea which were available in the kitchen all hours of the day.

The Inn was very clean, spacious rooms for a B&B, good breakfast. Having a child in the room was an extra $50 which I thought was pricey, considering most hotels "kids stay and eat free."

Overall a nice stay. Probably would not return. Breakfast was good.

When we arrived, we were met by David who checked us in and told us about the area. He showed us where breakfast would be served before taking us to our room. There he explained the features of the room. He was also the breakfast "chef" and did an outstanding meal. The inn is located within walking distance to several restaurants which David had pointed out on a map. After we returned to the inn, we retired to our room and were pleasantly surprised at how well we slept...it was very quiet. We would definitely stay again if we are in the area.

An interesting B&B in an historic area. Innkeeper David made us feel at home and has deep knowledge of the Harrisonburg area if you like to shop, dine or explore. He is also a bibliophile and historian with profound knowledge of the Civil War if you have interest. Modern amenities such as individual thermostats are cleverly incorporated in 19th century rooms. The inn is on a fairly busy street so you will hear some traffic if you have a front room. It quiets down at night but starts up early in the morning. We noticed something else early in the morning - the aroma of an outstanding breakfast.

Dr. Wayne has a beautiful home that has been lovingly restored and maintained. We enjoyed our two night stay at the inn and loved its close proximity to downtown and the relatively short drive to the Shenandoah National Forest. The breakfasts were superb and being able to dine in the outdoor area, made it extra special. Dr. Wayne is a kind and gracious host!

Breakfast was wonderful! The location was perfect, close to restaurants in town and easy access to the national park. My bed was too hard, but everyone else slept fine.

Host was most helpfull and very friendly. He made our stay very enjoyable, relaxing. We will return in the future.

We stayed at this B&B on our recent visit to JMW with our daughter. We enjoyed speaking with Wayne about JMU and his connection with the college. We browsed through JMU yearbooks he shared with us. What a great location and warm hospitality! We were treated to David's knowledge of Southern history and the significance of each room. We truly enjoyed the convenience of the Inn's location to historic Harrisonburg. The breakfast was delicious and deck was surrounded by beautiful Morning Glories - very relaxing and a great way to start the day! This Inn is worth the trip!

Excellent service and nice B + B but if you do not like road noise recommend renting a back room as house is on major road. everything else was fine.

Owners at the Inn greeted us a bit too warmly (hands off the guests, please, somewhere between familiar and formal without being too familiar is what I'm after.) They did not know I had confirmed the reservation online,they made up for that mistake, quick enough. We received the same room I had booked. The room was nice, the Inn is nice, the people were friendly. However, there were a few missteps, and for the cost of the experience, I'm not sure of the value. The staff inquired about my child (even though I had called up about it previously to see if she was welcome to join us, and they said they were happy to serve her Apple Juice at breakfast, special request granted before we arrived) upon arrival this was awkward. The rooms sheets were incredibly soft, the King Bed was not nearly firm and deluxe for the cost of the room, needs to be replaced. The breakfast tried very hard(full disclosure I'm a Chef, and a previous Exec Chef at a 4diamond hotel). The portions were too big and the poached egg was cooked too hard the first day. The hash had potential, the potatoes were not cooked fully. The second day, they forgot us altogether, (as we listened to the staff start bickering a bit in the kitchen) we didn't receive our breakfast entree and they forgot to give us the coffee cake. The staff were friendly, after the initial inquiry, to my mature 8yr old, answered her questions and talked to her. So, I don't want to come across as this place is bad; it isn't. They are close to the college town, the outside porch is quite pleasant, and there are a few comfortable places to sit and read a book or just relax.

Sorry, it was an unfortunate time for you to visit and would like to have you return and give us another try. We are a training venue for the Hospitality Program at James Madison University. This particular weekend we had two new Innkeeping Interns in training and mistakes were made, the bickering was really some instruction going on regarding the handling of guests when we have a full house of 25 people to serve. I am sorry that you did not inform me of your professional status, I would have explained the training that was going on. Had I known that you were a reviewing Executive Chef at a 4 star Hotel, I certainly would have had ongoing conversation with you about the breakfast and your stay and as I do with every guest and made sure that your stay met or exceeded your expectations. Thank you again for taking the time to write your detailed and professional review. It will be very helpful to training staff. Our hosts - Wayne, Galina & Dave, were fantastic. They made us feel very welcomed and at home. Our room - The Stonewall Jackson Suite - was absolutely beautiful. Breakfast on the outdoor deck, surrounded by the beautiful flowers, was a great way to end our visit. We could not have been more pleased!

Our brief stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn was very pleasant. The Innkeepers Wayne and Galina were the best example of Southern hospitality. The free desserts at a local restaurant, with a little help from Wayne, was a delicious surprise. As advertised, the breakfast was unforgettable.

Lovely blending of the old (beautiful woodwork, fireplaces, antique furniture) and the modern (free WiFi, luxurious sheets, "green" energy-conscious bathrooms.). It's very evident that Owner/Innkeeper Wayne loves what he does - that's reflected in his enthusiasm and friendliness in making guests feel at home. Both Wayne and the Inn website are great sources for local activities and places to explore. Galena, the hostess, was delightful. Sherry

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. It was our first Bed and Breakfast experience and it did not disappoint. The room was in excellent condition and the breakfast was just like Dad used to make! Wayne was a fantastic host and is full of local recommendations. We really enjoyed our stay at the Stonewall. It was sort of a reunion between us two guys who were in Vietnam together and our wives. While there we learned that Wayne is also a Veteran of the Korean war so us vets had a chance to talk about service life. Wayne is a great host and made us all feel very welcome.We sat in the living room to the wee hours. It was nice that he sent pictures of us at the fireplace to our e-mail. Good memories, good food, good rooms and most of all hospitality.

What a great find! Beautiful house, super friendly staff,walking distance to town and that best breakfast ever!

This b&b does so many things exactly right. Dr. Wayne, the host, is wonderful. He shares his knowledge and enthusiasm for the area and JMU (the local university) with the guests. He is quite a chef and his breakfast was delicious. On top of all that, every little detail is considered. The room itself was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed along with a few extra touches like a "hand salt" that left my hands softer than they've been in ages. Dr. Wayne recommended a local restaurant to us, and they gave us free dessert just for mentioning that we were his guests. Breakfast on the covered patio was so peaceful. We will never stay anywhere else when we visit Harrisonburg!

Wayne makes you feel right at home. The inn is located near the town center, which aids sight seeing. A lot of information is laid out in your room on historical sites, dining and so forth. Wayne is right there to help you plan your excursions, and provide input, if asked. The rooms themselves are clean,have individual climate control, and odorless. No musty smell in this older house. The grounds are lovely, with a gazebo for relaxing.The breakfast was wonderful, try the breakfast ham. If you want a wonderful experience of what a stay in a bed and breakfast should be, this is the place for that experience.

A friend of mine and I stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn for one night in July 2011. Check-in was a breeze and the rooms were beautiful (I saw several of them through open doors as I was led to my room). The room was immaculately clean and everything was tidy and neat. If you forget any of your toiletries - no worries, Wayne (the owner/innkeeper) makes sure you have everything you need! The bed was very comfortable and there was minimal noise from the busy road outside. The landscaping that has been done for this place is lovely! We sat outside under a cute wrought iron gazebo and enjoyed a glass of wine. The location of this bed and breakfast is perfect for strolling to the downtown area for dinner or drinks (about a 5 minute walk). The area was safe and we did not feel uncomfortable on our walk, even at 11:30 at night. After a good night's sleep, we woke up to a HUGE breakfast which included Wayne's twist on Eggs Benedict and hash browns (each dish using fresh herbs). The coffee was to die for! The staff was wonderful and if there was anything we needed, they catered to it. Overall, this is one of the best B&Bs I have ever stayed in. We will return!

My husband and I stayed at the Inn to celebrate our 51st. wedding anniversary. Dr. Engle met us with a smile and was a delightful host all weekend. The inn is beautifully appointed and everything is sparkling clean. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a bed that was more better than home. Dr. Engle suggested wonderful restaurants and even made reservations for us. And of course, the breakfasts really were something to remember. I hope you will visit Dr. Engle and the inn. We stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn over 4th of July weekend and enjoyed our visit. We chose the Inn so we would be able to walk to the downtown Harrisonburg area, and it proved to be an easy 10 minute walk. Our room was clean and comfortable and Wayne and his staff were gracious hosts. Breakfast was indeed delicious! This was our first B&B stay and we had no complaints!

Service & dining was great! Wayne knew the area and was outstanding in directing us to places we were interested in.

Had a wonderful stay the the Stonewall Jackson B&B on our trip down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. We stayed in General Picket's room which is located on the back of the house above the kitchen. The room was very nice and quiet. The house has a neat history and is conveniently within walking distance to downtown Harrisonburg. The night inn keeper recommended a local bistro named Clementine's (http://clementinecafe.com/) which we sampled. It had a very nice menu and we really enjoyed it as well. In the morning, Dr. Wayne the owner fixed us eggs benedict made with some nicely thin sliced Virginia ham. I would definitely stay here again and will recommend the place to my friends.

I wanted to find a nice place to surprise my partner as a belated anniversary/honeymoon, and had always admired the stone house on the hill. And what a delightful surprise it was! Warm, comfortable, relaxing... we sat on the porch for a while, then the gazebo, enjoying a very pleasant evening. We saw rabbits playing in the field the next morning, and a delightful breakfast the next morning on the deck. Dr Wayne and Galina are excellent hosts, and they create a warm friendly atmosphere- very restful and refreshing, and one that makes conversing with other guests a natural delight. I was able to relax, celebrate, reconnect with dear friends, and visit a few of the local spots. Heather & i give it a Five Star Experience!

We loved our weekend and both agreed we will be back on a future weekend.

Let me start by saying if you are looking for a place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley I would recommend looking up Dr. Wayne. He and his staff are second to none in the steps they take to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. After a spending a few minutes with him at check-in, you are left knowing a lot of love and care has been put into making your stay enjoyable and complete. We had one, I hate to call it a complaint, so I guess "grumble" would b more appropriate. Don't get me wrong, the house was immaculate and impressive on many levels. The bed was comfortable, the bedding was spectacular, the room was neat and well decorated, the bathroom was small but clean, you controlled the temperature of your room to suit you. Every potential need was taken care of ahead of time. There was even a small flashlight lying by the bed! Okay to the actual grumbling. The window by the sink didn't have a shade, which was a bit disconcerting. The curtain on that window was barely adequate to prevent exposure. The shower floor squeaked to the point we worried we would bother guests below. The door to the room had a 1.5" gap at the bottom allowing light and LOTS of noise to filter into the room. Like I said a grumble, not a real complaint Breakfast was very enjoyable. We were able to enjoy our meal outside on the porch. It truly was a breakfast to remember. Dr. Wayne and his staff prepared a meal we will be talking about for some time. The home is within walking distance of the historic district of Harrisonburg and many restaurants. There isn't a great deal of traffic, and the yard is large enough to make it feel somewhat secluded. I don't know why I feel B&B's should be more secluded as many of them are not, but this one feels "stuck" in the middle of town. That is a personal preference though. It does however, mean you are able to enjoy a stroll through a quaint older town.

Such an effort merits an informative and appreciative response to the reviewer and the readers. The replacement matching shade for that room has been on order and should be here today. The "squeaky" shower door responded instantly to waterproof silicone lubricant. I have, with good humor, chastised the housekeepers for not telling me about squeaky shower doors. However, they instantly inform me of any squeaky beds :-). The room door crack....well, the house is 150 years old and the hardwood floors and doors are original. about door "crack"; I have never had a complaint about it, but, had I known about your sensitivity to the light and sound from the space between the door and the floor I would have suggested (a McGiver) that you take one of the several extra pillows from the room closet and place it on the floor against the door. I think that it would block both light and sound very effectively. I am thinking it may not be in keeping with "this Old House" to try to tamper-add a piece to the bottom that beautiful old antique door. What do you think?? Yep, we are in the Historic "Old Town" District of the City's Center and you can enjoy a stroll to fine sidewall and rooftop dining, museums, art galleries, shopping boutiques and live entertainment. If you desire a "secluded" B&B in this area, try www.bythesideoftheroad.com and or www.oldmassanuttenlodge.com. I know them well. They are secluded beautiful country Inn-B&Bs that you will enjoy. Warm, friendly and inviting. A huge and delicious breakfast in the morning!

The innkeeper and staff were very friendly and generate a "make yourself at home" atmosphere. En suite room was nice and structure of house lends itself to quiet lodging. Not a high end luxury B&B and, as such, the price for a one night stay seemed steep. A strong focus on local tourism and catering to those in the Valley to visit quilt museums and battlefields.

The reviewer is right!! We are a circa 1885 restored mansion that has the ambiance of a comfortable home of that period, but with all the modern conveniences and amenities. We take "Southern Hospitality" seriously in our area and Harrisonburg is well known in the valley for providing that hospitality to any visitors. It is the Valley's Friendly City. Thus, when you walk in the door, you are one of the family and can make yourself at home. Our repeat guests frequently describe us as their "home away from home". There are so many things to "See and Do" here as we have many historical sites and museums. Being in the center of the Shenandoah Vally, Harrisonburg is the "Gateway" city for skiing,biking,hiking,fishing and many other outdoor activities. We are a listed "Appalachian Trail Community", Skyline Drive & Shenandoah National Park welcome center. Wineries, Caverns, organic and family farm visits, glass blowing and many more like attractions are easy day trips; thus, to really enjoy your stay you might plan on staying 2-3 days. That will give you a chance to enjoy the fine dining, shops,museums, art galleries, and live entertainment during your evening stroll through our lively Downtown Historic District where we are located. It is an interesting comment about our rates. Many people mark us less than "perfect" in value but there is a good but hidden reason for it. It is location, location, location!!! Most B&B's are located in the country or in a residential part of the a city where you must commute drive to dinner,shops, etc. Because of our very desirable Historic Downtown walk everywhere location property is expensive. The assessment of the land of location of the Inn is as much as the 1M beautifully restored 8000 sq.ft mansion;yet have the lowest B&B rates in the area, and we have free parking, Wi-Fi, drinks, with a comfortable "make yourself at home" ambiance! :-) Come and check it out! That is the same experience that we had at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Dr Wayne and his staff are exceptional at making you feel like family. Our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn was one of the highlights of our visit to the Shenandoah Valley.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the quaint and welcoming Stonewall Jackson Inn. It was the perfect launch pad for our excursions into the National Park, wineries, and Polyface Farm. Downtown Harrisonburg offers wonderful dining options, and the Inn owner is incredibly knowledgeable about the area. His recommendations were great! The breakfast was huge and delicious— enough to keep us going all day.

I felt at home right away. The house is LOVELY, the rooms are COZY, the atmosphere is HOME, and the hospitality was DELIGHTFUL!

My wife and I were on our way to Bethlehem, Pa from Greenville, SC when we decided to stop for the night. The Stonewall Jackson Inn is a very easy "off/on" from Interstate 81 at Harrisonburg, Va and is situated close to the charming historic district. As soon as we saw the Inn and met Wayne (the innkeeper) and his associate Galena we knew we had made a good choice. They both are clearly "peope persons" and made us feel right at home. Checkin was easy. Service was great. The Host and Hostess were very friendly and went out of their way to make sure everyone had whatever they needed. The whole house theme is Civil War era decor, but not too frilly. It felt like a home you could get comfortable in ...and we did. Breakfast was excellent. Ample parking and a great location.

Interesting redo with lovely woodwork. The food is just OK-I expected more given the write-up and the "rave". The quanitity was fine, but the quality was so so. It's way overpriced given the rooms , the area, and the ammenities. We're used to far more for far less. It really should be priced accordingly-not on the high end.

"A night's delight, a breakfast to remember" is the inn's motto and they deliver. Wayne and Galina were extraordinary hosts, the room was spacious and comfortable and breakfast on the back porch was very nice. Easter morning was beautiful! The first floor is chocked full of interesting things to look through, some nice small gifts and collectibles, and Wayne was very helpful navigating the local area. The location is very convenient to I-81, James Madison, and downtown Harrisonburg.

Certainly worth a "Diamond Collection" member property award for a wonderful B&B. Dr. Wayne and Galina (innkeepers) and their staff work diligently to make sure each visitor enjoys their stay. Excellent breakfast with a variety each morning. And conveniently located to alot of attractions nearby. The only small setback is the location of the B&B along a busy highway near downtown Harrisonburg, so there is an ocassional sound of traffic. But don't let that stop you from enjoying this piece of heaven. PS Look for the only remaining self portrait of the previous owner of the historical home, before Dr. Wayne purchased it in 1988.

Basic B & B. Nothing remarkable in furnishings or decor to warrant the price for our room. Would have preferred to stay at the local Hampton Inn and saved about $50 dollars per night. Do NOT understand why they want to have pictures of the guests and keep asking for your picture. Not a bad place but not worth the price frankly.

The reviewer is right about the furnishings. The Inn was built right after the Civil War and the furnishings are not "frilly/formal"; it is furnished like an circa 1880 home. However, most of the guests appreciate our being in the upscale part of the city, yet have the modern conveniences and amenities but enjoy the 1880 restored architecture and property ambiance. An outstanding value of staying with us is embedded in our lively Downtown Historic location with free off-street parking and the ability easily walk to 40 fine restaurants and shops, art and historical galleries and museums, stage theater with EZ on-off proximity to I-81 and JMU & Eastern Mennonite Universities. As well, we evidently missed the boat on providing our famous "Stonewall Jackson Experience" which is our famous trademark along with our gourmet "Breakfast to Remember" personally served on our shaded romantic outdoor Patio with music & conversation. Seems that the breakfast alone would account for a good part of the $50 bucks saved if one would stay at the Hampton :-) Have you ever had a Hampton breakfast??? LOLO There is a "Better Way to Stay" unless you just want to go to bed and sleep, grab coffee. a banana, and a warmed up danish and get on the road. About the picture, We routinely ask the guests if they would like us to take a picture of them having a good time here as a remembrance gift.....we send it to them free of charge. ... I am not sure what happened here but we will strive to do better. Perhaps the reviewer loved the luxury 1000 thread count linens, free hi-speed Wi-Fi, paddle fans and the individually climate controlled rooms. :-) I hope so. It was one of many college overnight visits and was truly the best experience. We relaxed in the common room at night and when it was time to go to bed the room was wonderful and the beds were so comfortable! We all woke up well rested and had the best breakfast any of us had had all year. Wayne and Galina are truly amazing and provided such a memorable and enjoyable experience! DEFINITELY stay at this b and b!

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is charming. Better than a hotel stay because you feel right at home. Galina met us when we arrived, checked us in, provided a tour and showed us to our room. The Jeb Stuart room was spacious with all the amenities of home. Wayne's breakfasts are fabulous-from Eggs Benedict to french toast to hash. Service exceptional. Proximity to downtown within walking distance. Great anniversary/birthday destination!

My sisters and I came to visit my daughter who is a senior at JMU. I wanted to stay at a B&B since my sisters had never done that. We loved the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Wayne was so gracious when we checked in. He helped us feel at home right away as he showed us to our bright, cheery rooms and explained the history of the Inn. He also helped us with directions to a winery and reservations for dinner at Clementine's. They showed us to the front table when we said Wayne had sent us! He welcomed my daughter and her friend for the delicious breakfast the next morning. My son has 2 more years at JMU and we'll definitely be back. Thank you, Wayne.

could not comment on the dining since we were unable to partake. I'm not sure since the number of rooms is small, but I would have expected breakfast to be later in the morning. But then, what do I know we were up at 8 anyway. Thank you.

Stonewall jackson is your quintessential quaint getaway set on the outskirts of a lively college town. Before my stay, I did the research and everyone pointed me in one direction. The research paid dividends. My stay exceeded all my expectations. Incredible food. Wonderful hosts. I had mtn bikes on the roof of my car, Wayne (the owner) assured me they would be kept safe and not to worry. I was given all the information I needed for touring on my stay.

Stayed for one evening at the Stonewall Jackson Inn with my daughter while touring JMU. It was the perfect place to lay our hats and our tired bodies for the night! Wayne is extremely accommodating, anticipating needs without having to speak them. Nothing is a problem, he knows exactly where to go for a wonderful dinner and prepares an excellent breakfast in the morning before seeing us on our way. All in all a very clean, warm and comfy experience I'd recommend to all!

Stayed here for a night on Valentine's weekend, and used it as a surprise to my then gf...now fiancée, after proposing at dinner that night! We both went to school at JMU so I had lived in Harrisonburg for 5 years...and this was the best way to come back for a romantic visit to where we met...Nice rooms full of charm and character - much better than any of the local hotels. Breakfast in the morning was perfect and everyone made us feel so special after our big night. Much thanks to Wayne and the Inn for helping to make our weekend one we will never forget!

My daughter and I stayed while in town for State Band auditions. We wanted something close to JMU that wasn't a college-town hotel room so splurged for a night at the Inn. I agree with all the nice comments. The breakfast was indeed delicious and fueled us past lunch. We'd like to come back when the weather is warmer so we can enjoy the porch.

My stay at The Stonewall Jackson Inn was unlike any other that I have experienced thus far. Immediately, I felt warm and welcome in the abode that Wayne and his son have worked so hard to make memorable for their guests. Wayne's amiable and laid back nature made me feel right at home, not to mention, the croissant French toast that he made for breakfast the next morning was out of this world (the scrambled eggs were tasty as well)! It was nice being able to come and go as we pleased without feeling like we had to check in or out each time. Galina was also a pleasure to get to know during breakfast. I imagine that if I choose to stay at another Bed and Breakfast, that it will be rather challenging to measure up to a place such as this. Overall, an amazing experience and I plan to visit Wayne and the Stonewall Jackson Inn very soon.

My boyfriend and I visited Stonewall Jackson Inn for a romantic Valentine's day weekend. We were actually expecting the Inn to be in an isolated, countryside type location (our own fault for not looking closely at the map!) and were a bit surprised that the Inn was in the heart of Harrisonburg, a small town. But this fact actually turned out to be great, since we were walking distance from some great restaurants (2 of which Wayne recommended, we loved!). The Chamberlain room was affordable and cozy, with its own fireplace. There were nice little touches throughout the room, like a candy bowl and individual temperature control in each room, as well as a fireplace! The breakfast the next day was wonderful too. Wayne was very welcoming and very informative about the surrounding area. Overall, a great place to stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night and the only downside was...we only stayed one night! Wayne the innkeeper and his staffer Galina were two of the most hospitable and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We stayed in the Pickett room, which Galina told us was one of her personal favorites. Everything was amazing. Wayne had restaurant menus on hand and offered to make reservations for us at the one we chose. Then, he gave us a coupon for dinner! I could go on and on and we only stayed less than 24 hours. It was the best getaway I've ever had. A+!!

Bed in big bay window was fabulous, and the breakfast was tasty.

My husband and I have been visitors to the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B for several years. We always enjoy our stay and love seeing Wayne. His hugs are the best! On this trip we also had the great pleasure of meeting Galina and Lynn, who are learning the ways of being great inn-keepers. We were introduced to some fabulous new restaurants within just a few minutes of the Inn. I especially enjoy the welcoming fireplaces in the living room and bedroom. Nothing says warm and inviting like a fireplace welcome! We look forward to our next stay.

My husband and I stayed with Dr. Wayne for Parent's Weekend at James Madison University. The Inn was recommended by the parents of another student, and our expectations were completely fulfilled. My husband is a Civil War buff so staying in an Inn with the rooms named of different generals was a treat ... it's beautifully furnished and decorated and there are some wonderful little touches, like a candy dish with various candies. In the evening we sat on the front porch and had a cocktail with another couple we met at the Inn. Breakfast was incredible -- bring your appetite! Very generous portions and delicious. Oh, and we made return reservations before we checked out.

The house is absolutely gorgeous. I loved the location and our room was extremely comfortable. We had a great time, but Wayne didn't seem to know what to say to us. I'm not sure why, but he was very awkward and brief with us which made us feel a little unwelcome.

The rooms and grounds at the Inn are just beautiful! We stayed at the Inn in July 2006 and can't wait to go back! The Inn keepers are so very nice and friendly. The food is wonderful!!! When they claim to have "A Breakfast to Remember", they are not kidding! I would recommend staying there to anyone and hope we can return again soon!

Wayne makes you feel like family. He makes the best breakfasts in Virginia.

We just spent a fabulous weekend at The Stonewall Jackson Inn. The Innkeeper, Wayne, made us feel at home. He is warm, welcoming, friendly and a fabulous cook! Stonewall Jackson Inn was very conveniently placed, walking distance from the center of Harrisonburg. Rooms had an appearance in keeping with the Inn's theme, and were very clean and tidy. The owner, Wayne, and his staff were very warm and welcoming, and saw to it that every request was facilitated. Breakfast was fabulous. Will definitely be back.

We stayed in the Stonewall Jackson room -- extremely large, spotless and quite comfortable. Price was reasonable - easy to find. Great value.

My husband and I were thrilled to finally stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, as we had tried unsuccessfully to book a room last year because they were full. We came in early October. The staff welcomed us on-line first and then sat us down for an introductory chat when we arrived. We felt immediately comfortable, as this turned out to be one of those B&B's where the hosts give you some space. We found helpful travel information and ideas in magazines and brochures of activities in the Harrisonburg area in our room. In the morning, we were surprised that we were not the only ones to prefer an early breakfast, but after the initial expected small talk with the other guests, we were left to our own conversations. Breakfast included French toast croissants, eggs, bacon and fresh fruit + coffee and orange juice. Delicious! Our room was the yellow one with a small writing desk overlooking the backyard. We loved the intimacy of the space and the fact that soap/shower gel and shampoo/conditioner were built right in to the shower in a dispenser. Had we stayed longer than one night, we would have made better use of the small fridge. Hope we can come back soon--

Wayne and his staff are the most amazing people! The rooms are beautiful and breakfast is always a spectacular occassion. My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary with a Friday night stay and night on the town. The convenience of being able to walk downtown is another advantage of this very special bed & breakfast!

A charming B&B in walking distance of historical downtown Harrisonburg. The breakfasts were a delight! Wayne has given attention to detail in all aspects. The slumber was restful and Wayne was a wonderful host. Can't wait to return!

I brought my mom to the Stonewall Jackson Inn, the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, for her first experience of a bed and breakfast. She absolutely loved it-the quaintness and charm reflecting the décor of the Civil War period; the warmth and personal attention of Wayne, the inn keeper; the delicious full breakfast on the patio amongst the morning glories and humming birds; and the beautiful gardens and outdoor seating areas. Our room had everything we needed including very comfortable beds for a great night’s sleep. It was a delight to have a home away from home while visiting my daughter who attends JMU. I’ll look forward to returning with my husband when we visit our daughter again.

We have made two wonderful trips to Stonewall Jackson Inn. Both visits were outstanding. Wayne and his staff are always accommondating. The rooms were spotless and the beds so very comfortable. The eggs Benedict were our favorite. The service was excellent at all times. The back porch was great with the umbrella tables and a spacious place to enjoy visiting with the other guests.We felt right at home and enjoyed exploring. We enjoyed the hospitality at the Inn as well as its historic character. So far, we have stayed in the Robert E. Lee and Belle Boyd rooms.

Expert recommendations as to what to do, where to eat and how to find activities you will love. Many destinations are an easy walk and the town itself is charming and interesting. The breakfast is fabulous and not attention to detail is spared. You will delight in many of the "Virginia Grown" products that are used here. I have to mention that most rooms have a private bath and private temperature controls.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn was a great stop on our trip from South Carolina back to PA. The Inn is really beautiful (each room is so unique!) with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was clear that much time and lots of love went into making the Inn a very special place. Our room was lovely and had all the amenities - comfortable bed, great shower, small refrigerator, iron/board, TV, desk, hairdryer, phone, AC. Breakfast was on the back patio among the colorful morning glories - what a treat! We were close to antique shopping and the stores in the town center, which was only a short drive away and where we had a nice dinner at Clementine's (there was live music as well). I would love to visit in the Fall/Winter when the fireplaces are crackling!

The owner Wayne, was extremely nice. He was very helpful with everything. The breakfast was great. The only downer was the bed and bathroom facilities. The bed was hard as a rock. The shower was a 2.5 foot by 2.5 foot. Other guest that came down for breakfast also commented that their beds were killers.

Oh My :-) This review is most welcome, Thank you very much!! It prompted me to do some intensive research as I had never had a comment from a guest or a review about the bed being as hard as a rock..He was right!!! Indeed, the bed in our Sherman Room, was just that, as my new housekeeper had flipped the mattress, not knowing that our new top of the line Serta Ultra Pillow Tops, should never be flipped! Thus, this poor man was sleeping on the wrong side of the mattress which was in effect a hard surface that supported the inner springs of the Ultra Pillow Top! We have corrected that and have given our new housekeeper a crash course in Pillow Top mattresses. LOLOL.. Hey, I will be happy to give whoever it was a complimentary stay on the pillow top side of the mattress, and I am sure he will experience our usual "Night's Delight" :-) About the shower in that same room, it is the smallest in the Inn as the available room to install it was not sufficient for a larger one. Thus we have bedded the room with a smaller double & twin bed to discourage really "large" people to to pick it. The shower is 36"x30" which is sufficient for the average person, but is probably tight for larger people. That is why this room is our lowest priced multi-bedded room. Families love it as their teen-ager can sleep in the twin on a bargain basis :-) Thanks again for the helpful review...it was a gift to me!!

Great B&B. Now this is my kind of B&B. Wonderful historic appeal but with many modern day conveniences including wireless internet, cable TV. Those conveniences do not distract from the early American charm as they are nicely tucked away. Meticulously decorated by the owner. They advertise a great breakfast and they deliver. A can't miss B&B.

We loved it there! A beautiful home with elegant rooms and friendly service. It was a breakfast to remember!

My husband and I and good friends experienced a wonderful weekend at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. The staff was very accomodating, the food was excellent and the Inn was impeccable. Wayne and staff (Ashley, Jake and Michelle) went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay. The Inn is located conveniently off 81. Easy to find.

My daughter was excited about her orientation day at JMU and we were both looking forward to spending travel time together, with the exploration of her new college "home". Knowing how limited our time can be together we searched JMU's list of B&B's and were delighted to find availability at this beautifully appointed and charming inn. Wayne is a delightful host who was quick to give a warm and friendly greeting and have informative suggestions for local attractions, enjoyable dining, and interests within walking distance. Our accommodations were true to what was advertised on the website, and we enjoyed the antiques, lovely woodwork, and gardens. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed the outdoor dining amongst yellow roses and birdsong. It was a perfect setting for mom and daughter to reconnect, laugh, and look forward to the new stage we are embarking on.

My best friend and I took advantage of the mid-week girlfriend getaway special. The wine was an excellent choice by Dr. Engel. He arranged for an in room massage for the both of us at our convenience. It was excellent! The Bell Boyd room was wonderful and very clean. Dr. Engel is also a talented cook and the breakfast service was superb! I would highly recommend this B&B. We plan on returning since we enjoy going to the Green Valley Book Fair and the local stores.
