Buchanan Inn at the Green Cove Station

Nestled in the quiet beauty of Mount Rogers National Forest near the foot of White Top Mountain, the Buchanan Inn at the Green Cove Station is the completely restored and refurbished home of the Buchanan family. This charming two story complex was built in 1915 to accomodate the growing family of Bill and Mary Buchanan. The home often served as a makeshift hotel for stranded and snowed-in travelers on the Norfolk and Western line. Daily, Mary kept her four daughters and anyone else in sight busy making lunches for passengers traveling through on the N&W line. This service continued from the 20s until the 60s. One hundred yards from this home is the Green Cove Station, owned and operated by Bill (Mr. Buck) for fifty years. It housed the General Store, Train Station, Western Union, Post Office and was the harbinger of thousands of stories from far and wide. Adjacent to the station, you can bike, hike or ride horses on the Creeper Trail (14 miles downhill to Damascus). Two miles away, you can join hikers on the Appalachian Trail or remain at the Inn and stroll the 300 acre family farm and let the music of the rippling stream lull you to sleep.

    From I 81, Exit 35 at Chilhowie. Take 762 S, or Whitetop Road, for 3 miles. At caution, 762 turns right. You follow Whitetop Road for 7 miles, then bear right onto SR76 or Konnarock Road. Travel 3 miles to SR58. Make a sharp left onto 58. Travel 4 miles to Green Cove. At a small brick Christian Church on left, turn right onto Green Cove Road (SR 600). The Buchanan Inn is 0.15 miles on right.

    Relax in the comfort of the LaVaun room. Lavaun was the oldest of the Buchanan daughters, a school teacher and one who followed her mother's footsteps as an excellent cook.The Adele room is more spacious, having a queen and a twin bed. Adele was the second oldest daughter, an elementary school teacher for 25 years, a principal for many years in the community and delights in the revival of her childhood home.
    The Eleanor room, always known to the family as the blue room, provides a sitting area for relaxed slitude. Eleanor was the third daughter and followed the teaching tradition of her dad and sisters, her specialty being Latin. Lift the windows in the evening and let the brook lull you to sleep.
