Johnnycake Flats

Unpretentious and delightfully small, we offer each guest a quiet escape from the hectic pace of metropolitan life. Built in the early 1800s, the main building once served as a stagecoach stop and farmhouse It is completely restored, with guestrooms individually decorated with period antiques, quilts and collectibles. A common room welcomes guests with its fireplace of handmade bricks, library and afternoon refreshments. Breakfast is served around a southern walnut harvest table with lovely views of the "flats"(valley). Sixteen acres surround our bed and breakfast with woods and fields, perennial gardens and a frog pond. Sightings of moose, deer and great blue herons are not uncommon. Fall foliage is absolutely breathtaking. The outlying countryside provides may opportunities for cross country and downhill skiing, snow shoeing and hiking. Low traffic and picturesque views make bicycle riding quite enjoyable.

Winter is a magical season here at Johnnycake Flats. We seem to be a magnet for great amounts of snow, which allows for lots of winter activities including XC-country, telemark and downhill skiing. You can even try snowshoeing through the forest under a full moon -- a pretty neat experience, especially if the owls are active. Later on, come, relax and sip hot cider by the warmth of the fire. And don't forget to throw Lila, a stick! In Autumn, our valley becomes alive with blazing color. Our area is known for its photographic opportunities, including frequent fox, turkeys, deer and migrating birds, plus the occaional moose. Be sure to ask us about which of these animals decided to help itself to our waterlilies!
Ah, the return of Spring... Even though we love most of what winter has to offer Spring is so special. Everything wakes up including the frogs in our ponds and the trout lilies on our hillside. It's also the beginning of the gardening season complete with beautiful flowers, berries and veggies. Across the road, flyfishing enthusiasts will find the Third Branch of the White River awaiting their visit. In Summer, our gardens are in full swing. Pictured here alongside our barn is the children's garden, one of many gardens that we invite you to enjoy. Sample fresh peas or juicy ripe strawberries right from the patch. Inquiries about our 100+ perennials are always encouraged. And,if so inclined, weeding is always appreciated!

Summer is also the time of the Vermont Quilt Festival located just 10 minutes from Johnnycake Flats. Two of the innkeepers have had award winning entries!
And, if you're into bicycling, Johnnycake Flats is a great staring point for some of the best routes.
