Quick Getaway

4.0 on September 29, 2015

Rooms were very nice and clean. Outside appearance was not so good. The breakfast was delicious and staff were friendly.

Innkeeper Response
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay here at L'Auberge Provencale. We are in the process of construction for a new bar and lounge, as well as a complete renovation of our kitchen. It is an exciting time here at the inn. We do apologize for the building materials that were by the parking lot. As soon as our "monsoon" of rain stops and the builders finish the stucco, all the building materials will be indoors. We appreciate you coming when we were in the throws of the stucco.

Told to "Get out"!

1.0 on September 22, 2015

My friend and I who live in different parts of the country travel together every few years. Thus, we were looking forward to catching up during our long weekend together at L'Auberge. Upon arriving, we found our rooms to be quite cold. We thus called the front desk and they said the innkeeper would be there momentarily. When he arrived, he stated that the heat had not yet been turned on and that "most people like this temperature". When I relayed to him that I had been ill and have been chilled, he asked if we wanted space heaters for our rooms. Seeing that there was no alternative, we said we did. When he returned with the heaters, he looked at both of us and said,"You don't look happy." We both replied that we were not exactly happy since the temperature was dropping into the 40's that night. The innkeeper then said, "You may want to consider going elsewhere." While we were surprised at this comment and the fact that he appeared angry, I proceeded to call other properties as he had suggested. When I did this, the innkeeper became very agitated and started yelling, "Get out! Get out now"! While my friend and I were stunned, we quickly left the premises since the innkeeper was, not only yelling, but also he was waving his arms angrily. Luckily, another property had availability and the rooms were exquisite and the service impeccable. My friend and I have never experienced the type of treatment we received at L'Auberge. The experience was traumatic and the behavior displayed by the innkeeper was offensive, unprofessional, and inappropriate. We thus felt compelled to write this review.

Innkeeper Response
I want to start by thanking you for your feedback. I take all comments from our guests very seriously and depend on this input to improve our business and guest experience. Your experience is especially unusual and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused because of this. We realize that we fell short in exceeding your expectations and that is certainly not the type of service we strive to provide to our guests here at L'Auberge Provencale. We value your comments and will address your situation with our staff as to ensure no future reoccurrence. Should you return to the area, we hope you and your friend will consider us again so that we may remedy any harm and regain your trust in the Inn.

Great weekend getaway

My wife and I spent our anniversary weekend here. Worth the price. Beautiful location. Impeccable service.

2.8 on September 09, 2015

This was a celebration of our 'silver' anniversary. Originally we had plans to go away but due to family reasons had to cancel our trip. Since it was our 25th anniversary I wanted to due something romantic and wanted my spouse and I to feel special even if for just one day. I ordered a romance package so we could check in have a snack and explore the town before dinner. Well that was the first issue, they had a card in our room addressed to the wrong people. We went down stairs to review the paperwork to make sure we had gone in the right room. So yes we were in the right room. Since there was no one at the Villa to talk to we decided to bring the card to the main house. So did this make us feel special... nope, more like just another couple. Well the person in the office apologized for the error of the wrong name on the card, but that was the extent of it. Sort of like 'so sad to bad'. Well I wanted us to feel 'special' for making it to such a big milestone in our relationship, because I think it is a big deal, however I felt like it wasn't. We had a good time with each other of course but we could have been just as satisfied going to a Holiday Inn Express, which would have been a significant amount of savings. Lesson learned!

Good but overpriced

3.4 on August 27, 2015

I wanted to love L'Auberge but it just didn't meet the expectations I had for a $400/night room. Our room was very nice, but the lack of a real shower was very inconvenient. Breakfast was good but not great. Dinner was very good and the service overall, especially Joshua, was great. A few suggestions - make the outside seating area more inviting - all the seating is old, dirty and hard as a rock (literally). The welcome area/office is like walking into a trailer - starting off with a lack of presentation for the type of place you want to be for the cost. Overall, it was nice but does not meet the same standards of other inns across virginia for similar or lower prices.

Innkeeper Response
Thank you for your review of L'Auberge Provencale. All our staff strives to make your stay as pleasant as can be. The out door furniture in question is antique plantation teak benches and chairs. They are weathered but they are cleaned daily. But, I will say I will take your suggestions to heart to better enhance our guest experience.

Exceptional Bed and Breakfast Bordering on 5 Star Hotel Quality

4.4 on August 26, 2015

L'Auberge is a Bed and Breakfast for those who dislike Bed and Breakfasts. We had the 2-day special with one sit-down dinner and one in-room "repast." The only meals in my memory that compare were eaten in a Michelin star restaurant in the French town of Ivoire, and the Brasserie -- a very good one -- at the Trois Rois in Basel, Switzerland. The portions were generous, but not too much so that even modestly sized appetites can (almost) finish a 2-appetizer, 1-main dish dinner. The wine -- more than I've ever knowingly spent on a bottle -- was worth every penny. The repast, with its own bottle of wine (still unopened, since we finished off the dinner bottle the second night) was also a treat. The breakfast, included, was delicious as well, with both Continental and made-to-order dishes available. Alas, we were unable to take complete advantage of the breakfast offerings, so satiated were we by the dinners. We took a suite, large and comfortable. The bathroom had no tub, but had a wonderful steam shower. Plenty of room to spread out. The service was very good, and included help with the luggage and navigating the area. The grounds are beautiful. What keeps L'Auberge from 5 stars across the board? 1. The bread, coffee, and teas, while not bad, do not rise to the quality as the rest of the food offerings. 2. The air conditioning unit is a loud, motel-like unit. Perhaps this accounts for the high level of moisture in the room's air. 3. The suite has a step down between the bedroom and the lounging/bathroom area, which took me by surprise, having forgotten it, in the wee hours. (I'm not sure I'd let my parents, who are 80) stay in it.) Finally, my wife claims that the bathroom was not cleaned during our stay. It was very clean when we arrived, however. But these few shortcomings did little to dampen our enthusiasm for L'Auberge. Our life is richer for having visited, and our life continues to be enriched just knowing it is there.

Innkeeper Response
We are happy you took advantage of our summer special and were able to enjoy an in room repast and dinner here at L'Auberge Provencale. Our new executive chef, Zachary Ladwig, is producing local fair of the highest quality of ingredients. Our tea is Harney's tea and the coffee is a local roaster Black Dog Coffee. Perhaps you were speaking of the Keuring coffee and teas in the room? I will look into the air conditioner and see what is up with the noise. They are expensive in room units and should not make a lot of noise. Just a note, the bathrooms are cleaned daily by our housekeeping staff whether you are staying another night or just one. Our lives are richer as well, to have you as our guest. We hope to see you again in the future.

Outstanding would not work

Nice B&B

3.4 on August 20, 2015

Room: Our room was great. The air conditioner was very loud and kicked on and off multiple times which was a little annoying, but we were happy it worked with the hot weather. The steam shower was fantastic. We had a strange sewer smell in our room that we noticed when we walked in, but it went away fast. Grounds: It was a nice B&B. We walked around a bit, but it was noisy during the day right on the road. We tried to hang out on the lounge chairs, but there was bird poop and spider webs on them so we didn't last. The front porch as cute, but had uncomfortable seating. Food: Loved the treats during the day and the lemonaid. Breakfast was good. Dinner...our first night we did a wine pairing with the tasting menu and left hungry. It was very expensive to not be filled up. The second night we ordered 5 courses off the menu and had a few glasses of wine. It was great and we were stuffed. Only disappointment is it was half the cost as the night before so we felt ripped off the first night. Not real sure what that is all about at this B&B. The desserts left little to be desired for a French restaurant. Was disappointed both nights. All in all we would go back possibly for the location, but would probably try another one out first because the price was high for the whole experience. Service at dinner was always outstanding!!!

Very Nice but Overpriced

3.2 on August 20, 2015

Very nice inn, but I could have spent a night at a high end hotel in NYC with the money we spent on our room and the dinner we were required to eat at the restaurant. Although very good, portions were small, they charged me $15 for a Bees Knees gin cocktail the owner wasn't even sure how to make, and the $17 for two cups of french press coffee. I do not think it is fair to charge that much for after dinner coffee just because you have no competing restaurants nearby.

About the innkeepers

Having lived in Key West for about 10 years, Alain and Celeste decided to leave the tropical paradise and open a country inn. They sold both restaurants, and in their Cessna 172 (Alain is a pilot), found the location in Virginia to open their inn. They landed in White Post, in the rolling hills of Virginia Hunt Country. Far enough from the city, but not too far, the property known as Mount Airy.
