Chestnut Hill Bed & Breakfast

The Chestnut Hill staff and innkerpers have customer service and attention to details down to a science. If we needed something, they were right there. I especially enjoyed the wonderful food and exquisite bedding. Wedding cupcakes in the hall to settle nerves, a seafood selection to set the special mood of the event. Troy was there to the last of the guests left and Kathleen was uppreparing a stuffed French toast for early Sunday departures. I can honestly say, our weekend wedding for our daughter and guests exceeded our expectations!

Oh! What a wonderful stay! The first thing when we arrived we were told they would up-grade our room. Each room is so different but beautifully decorated. Then the food – Oh my! Gourmet plus! Savory and sweet. I rate this 6 stars out of 1-5 stars. The hospitality is above and beyond. I am looking forward to the next visit.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay tremendoulsy! The home is lovely and nicely maintained. The rooms are comfortable and the grounds are quiet and spacious. Kathleen and Troy were warm and welcoming hosts. They took care of everything for us, including making dinner reservations. I have no other B&B experiences to compare it to, but I can't imagine a place much better.

Kathleen, Troy, and the staff make the B&B experience wonderful. They not only make you feel at home, but are so personable and friendly that you can talk with them for hours. They are wonderful hosts. The extra care they put into your stay makes this the best B&B experience we have had in the several B&B stays over our many years of travel. Treat yourself it is well worth it!

The 5th time and yet another amazing visit. A surprisingly young crowd, per usual. As a 30-something I never thought I would enjoy a Bed and Breakfast but Chestnut Hill continues to be a great experience. One of the only getaways where we consistently spend the last hour there plotting our next visit!

Troy and Kathleen were the best hosts we have ever had at a bed and breakfast. The rooms were wonderful, the food amazing and the hospitality above and beyond. They had an open bar, evening snacks of shrimp and crab. They even called 15 wineries for us the next day to see what ones were open since it was New Years Day. We also had a couples massage that was amazing as well. We will definately go back. We have stayed at many bed and breakfasts and this one was by far the best! Fred and Jill Baker

Our stay at Chestnut Hill exceeded all expectations, and the extra touches that Troy and Kathleen provided made it our favorite vacation weekend ever. We purchased the elopement package and you can read up on the items included in the bargain on their website. I wanted to talk about the 'extras' that made it magical. The house and lawn are gorgeous, with photo-friendly fountains and landscaping. The interior has been designed so that each room has character and warmth along with modern comforts (such as a flat-screen television hidden in the armoire). Some of our favorite surprises were fresh-baked cookies each night, chocolates on our pillows, wine and champagne in the downstairs bar, tickets to local vineyards, and even appetizers that were the size of entrees in most restaurants. The food was divine and made our trips to local restaurants pale in comparison (the egg casserole! the beef appetizer! the orange french toast!). As an eloping couple, we were given a bottle of wine after we took our vows, which was so sweet. Troy and Kathleen were truly curious about our experiences around town and in the surrounding counties and wanted to make sure we had the best trip possible. We were so sad to leave! There was only one thing that could be considered a negative and it is beyond Troy and Kathleen's control, which is the proximity to the Amtrak rails. However, the ability to walk to food and drinks makes up for that small inconvenience.

Having stayed in many different B&B's, we can definitely say that Chestnut Hill is now our favorite! Not only are the accommodations and amenities beyond what we could imagine, but Troy & Kathleen, as innkeepers, made our stay most special. We felt extremely welcome as soon as we arrived. We appreciated all of the tidbits of information for restaurants, wineries, etc. Everything met and exceeded our expectations! We will definitely refer everybody we know to Chestnut Hill.

We were celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary and decided to pamper ourselves at this time... since we will soon be empty nesters with our son heading off to college next year. We wanted to experience a retreat for ourselves and find out about the charms that a bed & breakfast can offer. We found it! Chestnut Hill is exactly what we hoped for, nestled in the beautiful state of Virginia where we proudly call home. Troy and Kathleen have a treasure with Chestnut Hill. We can't wait to come back!

This is a beautiful facility for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The rooms are beautifully furnished. Guests are provided with a gourmet breakfast each morning and a glass of wine each afternoon. The owners are so cordial and accommodating! This is a jewel not to be missed!

This B&B is fantastic. The owners have renovated this historic house and spared no expense. The rooms are well decorated, comfortable, spacious, and have great bathrooms. Our room had a queen bed, sitting area, big TV, and a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and separate shower. The basement has a great bar area where everyone hangs out. The owners are awesome and make you feel so at home. The food is amazing! Their breakfasts are two courses and so delicious. They were even able to accommodate my gluten free diet. They also serve delicious hors d'oeuvres and wine around 5 every day in the bar. Orange is a nice town and there are lots of great restaurants nearby. Convenient to historical sites and Charlottesville. We had a great time and plan to go back!

Our stay at Chestnut Hill was wonderful. From the luxurious rooms, amenities and every detail was extraordinary. Troy needs to write a cook book - the breakfasts were yummy and we looked forward to our afternoon cookies! Every recommendation from restaurants, hiking trails, and events were spot on! I cannot say enough about our visit. The decorations and special touches in each room made you feel at home, actually better than home since we were waited on constantly! Loved it! Kathleen & Troy treated us like family! Comfortable and informal. The food was great and our whole stay was warm and inviting. We truly enjoyed our anniversary weekend at Chestnut Hill. Having never been to the Montpelier Hunt Races (or any other race for that matter) the day was a real treat. The set up on the rail was perfect! All of the guests felt like old friends. The "family" style breakfast was decadent - now if my husband would just make Grand Mariner French Toast stuffed with Italian Marscapone everyday!!!

Great place, you can"t go wrong with any room selected, breakfast, evening appetizers, and drinks (wine, beer, soft drinks) were A+ Hosts very engaging and helpful with maps, dinning suggestions, and overall service. We will return again!Only disappointment was we stayed for 1 night, next time it will be for 2 or more nights.

We had a great time. The proprietors are friendly people who know the town well - they dote on you while you're there and are great conversationalists. They've really invested the place with their personality and charm. The nearby area is small but pleasant - not far from Charlottesville, so you can hop over there if you're more interested. The breakfast was amazing: for some reason I was expecting buffet-style, but this far exceeded my expectations! And there's free wine and beer included, which I didn't know about. Here's your only concern: the bottom floor rooms can be noisy. There's a bar area right outside that serves the beer and wine and also acts as a social area. It closes at 8 PM, but from about 5 till 8, it was hopping. You might want to make sure you get the upstairs rooms if you can. Still, it was fun getting to know the others guests in this area: just don't plan on taking a late afternoon nap. Definitely recommended! We'll be back.

We went to Chestnut Hill to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. (All the way from Ontario, Canada.) This was the most perfect experience, start to finish! The room (& the whole inn for that matter) was exquisitely decorated, warm and comfortable, while also luxurious - quite an accomplishment. The food was delicious, imaginative & beautifully prepared. I can't think of anything we could have wanted that wasn't provided. Finally, Troy and Kathleen were warm, friendly and extremely helpful. We genuinely enjoyed getting to know them both. We look forward to returning sometime in the future. P.S. Loved the "Man Cave!"

Troy and Kathleen helped make our weding magical. Everything was beautiful. The accommodations were comfortable and relaxing for the whole family. Choosing Chestnut Hill for our wedding was the perfect decision!

Once is most definitely "not enough" in the case of Troy and Kathleen's incomparable Chestnut Hill. Where to begin? The grounds? impeccable and uber-tasteful. The house? jaw-dropping gorgeous, leaving "moi" at an utter loss for words.The breakfast? photo-shop perfect and equally original and delectable. To wit: five stars on all of the tangible Bed and Breakfast criteria. But the "magic" of this special place is as much about the owners, Troy and Kathleen who embody what an exceptional "B and B Experience" is all about: genuine human connection and sincere hospitality. Once was definitely not enough, and so we returned. To be continued.

We went back to stay after one year of marriage. This is the best bed and breakfast in the States bar none. Kathleen, Troy and the staff catered to our every need for the second time. I planned a surprise weekend for my wife's 50th birthday. Chestnut Hill exceeded all of our expectations and my wife's surprise birthday weekend was a huge success. I planned a few surprises for my wife and our hosts, Kathleen and Troy carried them out wonderfully. Kathleen and Troy are second to none in all of our travels. The entire atmosphere they created made you feel as if you were a regular visitor to Chestnut Hill. The room was so quite no noise was heard from outside the room at any time of the day. Their recommendation for a romantic and quite restaurant for dinner our first night was absolutely wonderful. They even called the restaurant to inform the staff of our celebration. The service and food was some of the best that we have ever had. When the waiter told us that they were out of the wine I had ordered, the wine stewart offered a more expensive substitute at the same price as the wine they were out of. We also enjoyed the surprise desert that they prepared for my wife. I highly recommend that you visit the Charlottsville area, visit several of the many wineries and by all means treat yourself and stay at the Chestnut Hill B & B.

Our time at Chestnuthill was spectacular. We did not want to leave. From the roses, wine and chocolate in our room to the hospitality displayed by Troy and Kathleen it was great. We are truly spoiled and spend our quality time away only at Chestnut Hill. Our only comment we found some hair under the overflow spout in the bath tub of Ask Anna. No big deal but thought you would want to know.. We are looking forward to our next stay... The Oltmans

Troy and Kathleen are exceptional hosts. We were met with such a warm and gracious greeting so that we immediately felt at home. Our room was clean and appointed with quality linens and toiletries. Although the house is a 1860s home, everything inside has been remodeled, so the shower and tub, fixtures, floors, etc. Were as nice as a luxury hotel. The food was beyond exceptional and good conversation with Troy and Kathleen. Oh yeah, they know just were to eat and suggest accordingly to guests needs. Wonderful!

This B&B is a true find. The hosts are incredibly friendly, attentive, and responsive. The rooms are gorgeous and spotless. If you want to be pampered in luxurious surroundings this is the place!

While we have stayed at many great B&Bs, Chestnut Hill is by far the best. Kathleen and Troy are wonderful hosts. We normally like to try new places and not return to places we have visited. However, we have been to Chestnut Hill 3 times in the past 7 months and will go back again. For an exceptional B&B experience you can not do better than the Chestnut Hill!

This brought back many old memories. The restoration of this old home is awesome, many items are just the way I remember. Our stay was very exciting, toured the home and grounds, spent a very restful night, excellent breakfast in morning. This B&B is my grandmothers old home. I have not been there for over 35 years, but the stay was extremely fulfilling.

What a nice place to stay. Troy and Kathleen are top notch hosts and very friendly. The house is very well done with each room having a different theme. If you stay take the time to look at the book on the movement and restoration of the house. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic. If you are looking for things to do during your stay Tray and Kathleen have lots of ideas. I would highly recommend Chestnut Hill B&B.

Our wedding was one that was planned to be very small and intimate. Never in our wildest dreams did we realize with the help of Kathleen and Troy that it would be so elegant. Our day could not have been more perfect! Kathleen and Troy were more than InnKeepers they are truly wedding coordinators. Our cake was "the best cake I have ever tasted" that was my husbands quote. The breakfasts were out of this world prepared by Kathleen herself and her staff. The cookies! fresh baked daily and warm... so good we just had to take some home :) We will never,ever forget our PERFECT wedding. I don't think my husband and I have ever felt so relaxed and comfortable as we did during our stay at Chestnut Hill Bed & Breakfast. I would also like to add the ENTIRE staff at Chestnut Hill are wonderful we did not meet one person who works there who didn't go above and beyond to make sure we always had everything we could want or need.

This was our third stay at Chestnut Hill and yet again it was an amazing experience. From 5 ”o” clock happy hour appetizers to turn down service with chocolates to delicious breakfast meals, we had an incredible stay. They have updated the outdoor patio since our last visit so we enjoyed some quality time enjoying spring time next to the bubbling fountain. Kathleen and Troy are the hosts with the most and we’ll certainly be back yet again!

An elegant weekend away. If I am ever in need of a get away with my husband, we will spend time again at Chestnut Hill recapturing the love we share.

Our visit to Chestnut Hill was a much needed break to rejuvenate our batteries. We loved our suite with the wonderful bathroom. The fireplace across from the Jacuzzi tub was perfect. Loved the furnishings, the burst of color around every turn and the great conversations. Oliver (Maltese) was the perfect welcoming host for a beautiful weekend. We will be returning for another stay in the Spring.

Truly the best B&B experience we've had! The home is amazingly decorated yet very comfortable. Luxury bed and linens were greatly appreciated on a cold night in February. The owners were gracious and wonderfully accommodating.

We really enjoyed our stay at Chesnut Hill-the home was beautiful and the home looks even better than the photos. We enjoyed the little touches such as a daily happy hour and bath salts in our room (we stayed in Ask Anna suite). Kathleen and Troy are very accomodating and you will not be disappointed!

"Over the Top" is a great catch phrase for this Inn not only because it sits on top of a hill with a stately presence and view of the town below, but mostly because the experience is so luxurious it really is "over the top." The Innkeepers, Troy and Kathleen, think of everything, and do everything to make you feel pampered, but in the comforts of being right at home. An unforgettable visit!

My wife and I wanted a honeymoon somewhere within driving distance from home. We did not expect to find a place so beautiful and close with so much to offer. Kathleen and Troy went out of their way to ensure we were completely comfortable and always with a smile. The breakfasts were amazing, unique and made from scratch. My friend and I were looking for a B&B to stay during a weekend of winery-hopping, and Chestnut Hill was a perfect choice! It was only 20 mins away from the wineries and it is a beautiful property! The bed was extremely comfortable and the breakfast was chef-quality - we had a crab cake eggs benedict one morning and amazing french toast the second morning. The best part, however, was the hospitality of the owners. They greeted us with wine at check-in and printed directions for the wineries and dining. Their suggestions were very helpful in making our stay memorable. I highly recommend Chestnut Hill!

From our brewery tour (5 breweries with a driver) to wonderful accommodations and food, we found ourselves already planning another trip to Chestnut Hill. Troy and Kathleen welcomed us into their beautiful home with smiles and hospitality, this was our first B & B and my husband and I had no idea what to expect, we were pleastantly surprised. From the first view of the inn as we drove up the steep driveway, we knew we were in for a treat... and we were not disappointed. We absolutely loved our stay at the Chestnut Hill B&B! The innkeepers, Troy and Kathleen, were so charming and informative. The inn itself was so much more lovely than we had expected. The pictures online, while great, did not do the Inn justice. The house is immaculate, cozy, beautifully decorated and well appointed. Our room, the bridal suite, was like our own little apartment--I hated to leave it! WE will definitely return to Chestnut Hill.

This was a very beautiful B & B. the couple, Kathleen and Troy, who run it went out of their way to make our stay very pleasant. The food was over the top. The room was very comfortable and the decor was lovelly. We enjoyed meeting the owners and their other guest.

The scent of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies wafted over us as we entered Chestnut Hill, signifying that this was not only a beautiful place to stay (we had seen the photos online after all), but also a place filled with warm hospitality. The attention to every detail did not go unnoticed. The grounds including a fire pit, waterfall, patio, koi pond and garden were as impressive as the rooms inside. This is the prettiest bed and breakfast I have ever stayed in, as well as the cleanest. Chestnut Hill sets a high standard of luxurious living. I did not feel like I was staying in someone’s home, but in a five star hotel. Yes, you should visit here.

A few months back some friends and I decided we needed a wine weekend. We found Chestnut Hill and it was the best choice we could have made! Troy and Kathleen were amazing from the very beginning - making sure they had everything we could want and need and making sure our friends felt welcome and they also set up massages and vineyard tours for us. Best of all, on by their beautiful fountain, my boyfriend ended up proposing to me!

Outstanding hospitality and accommodations. Troy and Kathleen have created a wonderful space to relax and enjoy while doing their best to personalize it to make their guests as comfortable as possible.

An absolute oasis - while we went to enjoy wine country, we ended up enjoying being at the B&B as much or more than any activity. In fact, next time (and there will be a next time) I plan to cut back on activities in order to spend more time simply relaxing at Chestnut Hill.

This bed and breakfast was an amazing stay. I travelled with my daughter and we absolutely loved the story of the beautiful home, the welcome platter of cheeses, crackers, and wine, the amazing bed, the beautiful garden, and the yummy breakfast. The owners, Troy and Kathy were so hospitable and helpful. My only regret is that I never did get that picture of the beautiful cardinal coming up to the bird feeder. I would definitely stay here again!

Troy & Kathleen could not have been more accommodating. The breakfasts were excellent and the snacks and appetizers served as lovely additions to the wine we purchased in the area. We highly recommend Chestnut Hill to any traveler and will deinitely be staying there again. The only down side - Orange and it's surrounding area do not have many kid-friendly attractions. This is definitely an adult-only vacation area.

We had an amazing weekend. The breakfast each morning was outstanding not only in presentation but taste as well. We felt as though we were queen and king each morning. We truly appreciated all that they did for our little Miss Lilly. They made our weekend possible by caring for our crazy puppy. She loved hanging out with them all day and the loved the long walks they took her on. Their food recommendations and travel spots were dead on. We loved the sky diving and Restaurant Pomme in Gordonsville.

My husband planned a weekend at Chestnut Hill to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. The weekend could not have been more romantic! One of the owners was at the front door to greet us as soon as we arrived. We were shown to our beautiful room after a short tour of the historic mansion. The room was beautifully adorned with luxurious amenities and decor. From the gourmet breakfast to the exquisite wine and cheese platters served each evening, the staff at Chestnut Hill offers a perfect balance of historic country living accompanied by luxurious elegance.

Absolutely stunning! Gorgeous and romantic inside and out. Easy to get to. Fabulous food. We arrived very late and they left us a rose petal path to find our room. How romantic! They even held breakfast for us until later so that we could sleep in after arriving so late. They made sure we had cookies when we returned at night. And, did I mention how beautiful and romantic this place is? Wow!

We enjoyed staying in the Four Quarters Room this past weekend. Everything about Chestnut Hill is well done. The house is beautifully decorated, the grounds impeccable, and Kathleen and Troy are fabulous and attentive hosts. Everything was organized - including directions printed to restaurants, the winery we toured, and the horse back riding facility that we enjoyed. They know the town well and were able to point us in the direction of a beautiful children's clothing shop, antique stores, and recommend wonderful restaurants to try during our stay. We so appreciated their flexibility with our breakfast time and they even set up a separate table inside of our room for us to enjoy a private dining experience. No detail is left un-done. Truly, this is an outstanding Bed and Breakfast.

We had a fantastic time in Orange, VA. Troy and Kathleen are great hosts, helped us get around the area and took really good care of us. The B&B is fabulous, quiet and easy to get to, great breakfasts. Much recommended, but watch out for the city taxes on restaurants.

Chestnut Hill B&B features beautiful grounds and an outstanding home filled with lovely furnishings. The Innkeepers, Kathleen and Troy are knowledgable and caring. Breakfast is catered to your personal taste and complimentary wines and bottled water are provided as well. In summary, you are made to "feel at home" .... truly the art of the Innkeepers.

We have stayed at many other bed & breakfasts and this is our new favorite from the food to the hospitality. We will go back for sure! We loved the landscaping and the gardens were great! We LOVED the fire pit on the rear patio too.
