    A Very Lovely Evening

    January 10, 2013

We had a marvelous stay here in Room 5 of the South Street Inn. The moment I walked in there was the amazing smell of fresh-baked cookies, which were offered at all hours at the front desk. The room was beautiful with a fire already lit, and the bathroom clean with a nice big tub (which we filled with about a foot of bubbles later that evening--I recommend). Wine & cheese hour held some truly superb cheeses, and the breakfast in the morning was so tempting I needed to try all five types of breads, which were indeed delicious. I suppose it would have been nice to have had some kind of hot-cooked items like eggs, etc., but they make no pretense on the website that there will be, and I was certainly stuffed from the breads, fruits, granola, and yogurt. The service was excellent--when my boyfriend and I stupidly turned off the pilot light on our fireplace one of the women came in & tried to light it for about ten minutes (it was very confusing), & happily left us with the lighter to try ourselves, which we eventually figured out. To address some complaints on other sites (such as noise issues), I did not notice any noise from other guests & when the train went by the windows did rattle quite a bit, but I jammed them with towels & all was quiet. So yes, it is an old house and rattles some, but honestly that's the charm! We wanted to stay in a beautiful old house, and that's what we got.

    Loved This Ol' House...

    December 07, 2012

The large main house was built in 1856 for a family, later converted to a bordello (the history & renovation pix are in the library). I was there when the $110/night specials were being run in Dec. & Jan. -- during the week only 3 rooms were booked. It was perfect. Yes, the house creaks and things are old, but it was very clean & quite elegantly furnished. Yes... the train does come thru in the middle of the night and shakes the whole house -- it adds to the atmosphere. If you live in a vinyl village S/D and you require sterile & quiet surroundings when you travel (including 10 electrical outlets in your room and a marble vanity in your bathroom), by all means book the Omni or the Hampton while in C-Ville -- you will be much happier, and so will the 200 South owners. To me it was like visiting Grandma's house... if Granny lived on the CSX... and was a hooker. So much history & charm... and I walked everywhere (I'm almost 70) on the nearby historical outdoor mall -- good restaurants. Imagine reading the Jon Meacham book about Jefferson with a fire in your fireplace in your room. Desk people were lovely -- Annette even called Monticello for me to get an idea of the best time for me to go for the tour. Library/ breakfast/ wine&cheese room was comfy... with overflow downstairs. You will need to carry your bags up a flight even to the 1st floor -- there are stairs everywhere. If booked solid, there could be parking issues & noise issues on creaky floors above you. It is a very old house in a terrrific location in the historic section -- if that appeals to you, you will have a wonderful time. Otherwise don't even consider it. BTW, I am not sure I would pay $300/night to stay here -- I will have to debate that with myself if I go to C-Ville again during peak season... but I would go up to $250 just for the fun it all.
