Their geological formation dating back to the Late Pleistocene (100,000 years ago).

In the old beautiful castle of Ripa d'Orcia (XIII sec.), set upon a rise in the centre of Orcia valley there is nowadays a comfortable country Residence with rooms and apartments ideal for relaxing stays. Ripa d'Orcia, an architectural complex which has survived virtually unchanged, offers to his guest and visitors hospitality. In the historic houses which have comprised the Borgo, from 1990 there are six comfortable and charming double bedrooms with private bathroom/shower, breakfast, rustic tuscan furniture and seven large self-catering apartments with their own cooking facilities which can sleep 2 or 4 people for longer (one week) and indipendent stays.
