Warm Destinations for Winter

Some people love the cold weather, but many others want to flee their area as soon as winter approaches. Use that as your excuse to escape to these fun warm winter destinations and grab some warmth to carry you through winter's worst.

1. Miami, FL

Besides heading to the beach, visit the New World Symphony and marvel at Frank Gehry's architectural design while you listen to some of the world’s best classical music. Visit South Point Park and take a long stroll or bike ride along the wide sidewalk next to the ocean. Consider grabbing a bite to eat at Smith & Wollesky or visit the 40-foot-high Sculpture of Love and Anguish, which is a hand reaching up to the sky in commemoration of the Holocaust.

If you're feeling adventurous, take a kayak tour of the local sea caves or a horseback tour of the local beaches. If you want to do something less daring, take a trip down the Urban Wine Trail or go shopping in the Funk Zone or State Street. While in Santa Barbara, go for a tugboat ride on Lil' Toot, the water taxi, before a delicious dinner at Bistro 1111 or Aldo's Italian Restaurant.

Over 25% of Costa Rica is protected or conserved, which makes it a paradise for nature and outdoor lovers! Some of the most gorgeous beaches in the hemisphere can be found along the 80-mile shoreline of Nicoya Peninsula. After a stroll or a dip in the ocean, you might take an ecoglide tour of the Arenal Volcano National Park. Don't miss the chance to dine on fresh-caught seafood, traditional gallo pinto (rice and beans), and sweet plantains. 4. Bahamas


In Nassau, head to the Blue Lagoon and swim with dolphins. While you're there, hit Cafe Matisse for a delicious meal from their almost-too-extensive menu that includes a lot of Italian favorites. Or head to Freeport and take in some snorkeling, rock climbing and a 30-foot slide all on the same catamaran. Then head up to the Flying Fish Modern Seafood restaurant to dine on their delicious egg and crab creations. While on the islands, look to see how many of the 109 local species of birds you can find.

5. New Orleans, LA

New Orleans doesn't get very cold in the winter, and it's the home of some of the best music in the world. Catch a live music show at Preservation Hall, The Spotted Cat, Tipitina's, and Rock 'n' Bowl. After a night of music, take a laid-back ride on the Canal Street Ferry and see the entire skyline. Days might include lunch at the Central Grocery where you can share a muffuleta with someone special. At the Clover Grill, enjoy in a unique experience by eating a burger cooked under a hub cap.
