Take a Victorian Architecture Tour
The entire city of Cape May is a designated National Historic Landmark because it has one of the largest collections of surviving 19th century Victorian mansions in the U.S. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities offers several tours of Cape May historic homes via trolley. Take the Mansions by the Sea tour to see Victorian beach cottages from 1970 to housing today along the Delaware Bay. Or take a tour of Cape May’s Historic District, which includes the gorgeous Physick Estate and Carriage House Gallery.
Visit West End Garage for Local Products
This garage-turned-shop features vintage products, antiques and goods made by local artisans. You never know what you’ll find here, whether it’s a classic fedora to spice up your wardrobe or a figurine from the 1920s you just can’t live without. The West End Garage is located on West Perry Street, not far from downtown Cape May.
Sample Chocolates and Other Sweet Treats
There are several excellent sweet shops in the area. Treat each other to gourmet treats at James’ de Luxe Confections, which has everything from fancy French macaroons to delicate chocolates. Another great sweet spot to indulge with your honey is Laura’s Fudge Shop in nearby Wildwood. Indulge in a variety of rich fudges and even chocolate-covered bacon. Don’t forget to bring some chocolate covered strawberries back to your room for later! If you’re looking for a low-fat but still decadent option, check out Kohr Bros. Frozen Custard on Washington Street in downtown Cape May for this delightful frozen treat - it’s been served here since 1919 so you know it must be good.
Take a Bicycle Ride Along the Beach
Rent a bike from Shields’ Bike Rental and take a casual ride along the beach. Pack a romantic picnic or stop for a swim if you’re up for it. Shields’ prices are very reasonable - you could even rent for your entire stay and plan to get around the city by bike. Choose from cute old fashioned beach cruisers or a hilarious two-seater surrey. Or, if you and your significant other are especially in sync, rent a tandem bike for the ultimate romantic bike ride.
Get a Couples' Massage at the Cape May
Cape May Day Spa on Jefferson Street, not far from the historic Southern Mansion, is the premier location for relaxation in Cape May and a rejuvenating experience after biking all day or being windblown on a boat or parasail ride. Couples can choose from several romantic options: the aromatherapy integrated Swedish massage, an aromatherapy deep tissue massage or the Ultimate Victorian Experience - a two and a half hour complete couples package.
Search for Cape May Diamonds at Sunset Beach
Take a beautiful early morning or evening stroll along Sunset Beach. Dig through the beach pebbles to find rose quartz crystals, called “Cape May Diamonds” because they really do look like glistening diamonds. If you’re a dog lover, you’re likely to see at least a few pooches frolicking on this dog-friendly beach. You can also visit the beachside miniature golf course, souvenir shop at Sunset Beach Gifts and look out in the water to see the concrete remnants of the USS Atlantus - a discarded war ship meant to be a ferry until it broke away from its moorings in 1926. It has been planted just offshore ever since.
Take a Tandem Parasail Ride
If you and your significant other are adventure-seekers, what better way to get close than through a thrilling tandem parasail ride. Choose an early morning or sunset ride and head to Utsch’s Marina to take fly high above the waves with East Coast Parasail.
Sample Local Wines
Take a vineyard tour and sample the wines at Cape May Winery, whose specialties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. You can bring your own picnic lunch and sample wines while appreciating scenic views from the outdoor vineyard deck.
Grab a Late-Night Cocktail
After dinner, head out for a late-night cocktail on the relaxing patio at Pier House. It’s a popular restaurant and the drinks are just as spectacular. Be fancy and sip on a Blue Moon martini or a cosmopolitan. Pier House also offers an excellent wine menu.
