More than half (57%) plan to stay in at least one B&B for a winter getaway, with almost three out of four (71%) choosing a different B&B in their destination for new and different experiences.
The top 10 winter destinations for B&B travelers, according to survey responses and destination search data on BedandBreakfast.com, are:

Almost one-third of travelers (32%) planning a winter getaway will enjoy a splurge weekend and stay in luxury accommodations – with half willing to pay $150-$200 a night and 40 percent willing to pay $200-$300 a night. Getting Away for the Holidays
According to the survey, almost one out of four (24%) B&B travelers are planning a getaway for the holidays. Of those travelers, half (51%) are looking for a romantic escape, while almost one in four (22%) want to get away from the holiday hustle and bustle. Others choosing a holiday getaway will stay at a B&B because there is not enough room at relatives’ or friends’ homes (14%) or they prefer to have a place to get away from family (13%).
“While a great time of the year, the holidays are always a bit stressful so it’s a good time to plan a weekend getaway,” says Gregory Sion, general manager of BedandBreakfast.com. “Staying in a B&B during the holidays offers a chance to reignite romance or even just provide a quiet respite away from all the holiday hustle.”
The majority of travelers enjoy getting gift cards as presents, and when it comes to travel-related gift cards, nearly two-thirds (63%) would prefer to receive a gift card for a bed and breakfast, followed by gas (21%), airlines (12%) and hotels (4%).
Of those who don’t like getting gift cards, nearly half (49%) worry about expiration dates, 40 percent can’t keep track of gift cards, and 12 percent believe gift cards are not trustworthy sources of payment.
The infamous fruit cake is the worst holiday gift that could be received by nearly four out of 10 surveyed (38%), followed by a re-gifted item (32%), tacky holiday sweater (24%) and socks (6%).
“If in doubt about what to give someone during the holidays, forget the fruitcake and holiday sweater and instead consider giving the gift of travel,” Sion says. “The BedandBreakfast.com Getaway Gift Card® is so personable because it can be customized with a photo of your loved one. And unlike other gift cards, the BedandBreakfast.com Getaway Gift Card never expires, never decreases in value and has no blackout dates.”
Individuality of B&Bs Attracts Travelers
The top reasons travelers choose B&Bs are the unique properties with individually decorated rooms (49%), staying with innkeepers who are local experts (18%), eating homemade breakfasts (18%), getting great value (8%) and interacting with other guests (7%).
Nearly two-thirds (60%) of travelers have stayed in more or the same number of B&Bs as the previous year.
Almost three out of four (72%) say B&Bs, which typically offer free breakfast, parking, WiFi and other amenities, provide more value than hotels. A majority of travelers (79%) also say they prefer to book trips online.
Nearly three out of four B&B travelers are couples and between the ages of 35-65. Eight out of 10 drive to their destination and almost half of the trips are within 150-250 miles.
