Mariposa Ranch Bed & Breakfast

  • Inn Details

Upon arriving at Mariposa Ranch, a beautiful 1870 plantation home with 12' ceilings, you are greeted by a charming facade with two large verandas supported by stately white columns. All guest quarters are reminiscent of a bygone era, lovingly furnished with fine period antiques and the modern amenities of home. At Mariposa Ranch "relaxation" is the key word. At your request a massage can be arranged in the comfort and privacy of your own room. Enjoy total peace and quiet from the outside world as you stroll, jog or bike through the Live Oaks, hills and valleys that stretch for miles. There are two important facts to know about Brenham: It is considered the birthplace of Texas, confirmed through its great Star of the Republic Museum and State Park; and Brenham has some of the best antiquing in this part of the country. The Antique Rose Emporium draws visitors from hundred's of miles away. The area's many festivals are an added attraction, including: the Round Top Antique festivals, world-class concerts at Festival Institute, Shakespeare at Winedale presentations, the Festival Hill herb gardens and herb seminars, the Spring Bluebonnet Festival, Scarecrow Festival, and the Brenham Downtown Christmas Stroll, Pleasant Hill Winery, the Monastery Miniature Horse Farm, and Unity Theatre. Be sure and indulge yourself with a tour followed by ice cream at the famous Blue Bell Creamery.

We booked 2 nights but left after one, as early as we could get ready the next morning. The Ranch Hand Bunkhouse was our selection based on photos on the web site and good reviews. In summation, the place was dirty, the amenities very outdated and the cost was way out of line. Specifically, the floor and rugs were dirty; the refrigerator, though working, was filthy on the outside, like it had just recently been brought in from living on the porch; the bathroom accommodations were so-so (toilet so close to the wall you have to sit sideways and the shower so small you could barely move in it) and we didn't even try the jacuzzi because the water smells so bad. Described as a jacuzzi for two, I doubt we'd have been able to move around IF we'd gotten in the thing. Outfitted with a hotel-type floor A/C and a somewhat ineffective window unit in the bedroom, we had to keep them both running at 68 to keep the temp down enough to sleep without sweating. Really old TVs and no DVD player made watching our movies only possible with our laptop we just happened to bring along. Living area furniture was uncomfortable, to boot. But the icing on the cake: a scorpion ran across the floor, right in front of my bare feet. Now, given the dry conditions and the place being in the country, it wouldn't have been a shocker to see a scorpion outside, but in the house? And there was no mention of the possibility of running into a scorpion; had we been warned, I certainly wouldn't have taken my shoes off. I am thankful I didn't get stung. I guess the odds are that you're going to hit a dud every once in awhile, and that we did. Other places we've stayed were amazing and COST LESS. So we really expected Mariposa to be at least as nice, with the slightly higher per night price, and we were sorely let down. After speaking to the innkeepers, they offered to comp the room for the second night. So a plus with regard to fairness on the innkeeper's part.

We stayed in the fall of 2010 and had a very pleasant time. We stayed in Fern Oaks Cottage and enjoyed the jacuzzi tub. Breakfast was very, very good. One of our party avoids gluten and the manager/chef was happy to accommodate that special dietary need. Recommended; we plan to return.

We had the Enchanted Evening package and stayed in the Cowboy Cabin. Our dinner was served to us in the cabin and the food was excellent. We have been telling all our friends about what a wonderful relaxing visit we had and look forward to our return.

Spent Sunday night in the Texas Ranger Log Cabin. It was very cozy and romantic. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. I was very surprised. Much nicer in person that even what you see on the internet.
