Named after the fantastic art collection found inside, The Austin Folk House is a wonderful new bed and breakfast centrally located in the historic West Campus neighborhood. It is minutes from The University of Texas, The Texas State Capital, The Governors' Mansion, Town Lake and Downtown Sixth Steet. The building, which was originally constructed in 1880, was recently renovated so as to afford modern comfort and convenience without sacrificing historic charm. The rooms are decorated with lovely old antiques, but there is certainly no bad plumbing to worry about in this B&B! Best of all is the Texas-sized gourmet breakfast served daily. We look forward to seeing you during your next business or pleasure trip to Austin!

Great stay at Austin Folk House

    April 20, 2013

Stayed at AFH for three nights. It's located only a block from the University and about a mile from the Colorado River and fabulous greenbelt that runs through Austin. The service was excellent. Very accommodating and friendly. Don't come to any conclusions about facility cleanliness when entering through the back door into the kitchen area. It's basically clean but could use a deep cleaning and fresh paint to bring it up to the standards of the rest of the house. I only mention this because it's a first impression when checking in. Our room was very clean and well maintained as was the dining area. Breakfast was full on and fabulous: Baked egg dishes, stuffed french toast, bacon, fresh fruit as well as the usual assortment of bagels & cereal. The cook bakes fresh peanut butter cookies every morning! The house is located in the midst of lots of activity: college students, dormitories and construction of a large parking/dorm facility across the street but they politely have a bowl of earplugs for guests! I would definitely stay here again.

    Nice Bed, Awful Breakfast

    June 17, 2007

My friends and I stayed at the Austin Folk House for the ACL festival in September '06. After hearing such great reviews, we were shocked at the terrible breakfast service. The food wasn't good, and there wasn't enough--we arrived in the dining room a half hour before the end of breakfast each morning, and usually found scraps of a mediocre quiche or casserole. They had the obligatory cereal/toast/bagel offerings, which I would've happily purchased somewhere else (I seriously considered scrambling up some egss in the kitchen). The management gave us a small discount when we complained, but we still felt a bit duped. Hopefully, they've hired a new cook.

    Innkeeper Response
The guest who posted this review waited almost 10 months to do so. When she checked out with us, she and her two girlfriends raved about Folk House except for a complaint about our breakfast chef. They said that she ran out of hot food two of the three days, but that she DID offer to make them eggs/omelets to order. We suggested a significant discount to make up for the situation of which all three ladies agreed was fair. Sometime later when this guest arrived home she sent us an email requesting an even larger discount. We told her that we would not honor her request, but would be happy to give her a discounted rate for the next years ACL festival (our busiest weekend). She declined, but did not seem unhappy. So we were very surprised when this review showed up at this late date.

Distinctive decor, unlike the usual B&B Victorian clutter. Would recommend and return.
