El Pontifical Hotel and Restaurant stands in the village of Los Santos de la Humosa, just 45 km. from Madrid city center and 35 km. from Madrid international airport. The hotel and restaurant is housed in a 18th century historical building (it was once used as the barn for collecting the "Tercia", 1/3 part of the harvest collected by the peasants and paid as a tax to the Bishop.) The building has been meticulously restored, and great care has been taken to preserve its historical features and traditional elements, such as the beams throughout the building and the thick stone walls in the inside that make this place one of the most emblematic buildings in the village. It is surrounded by a magnificent landscape of rich and fertile land on the banks of the River Henares. The splendour of the oldest and mos extensive parts has been mantained, particularly the cellar where the wine used to be stored. The hotel has 5 rooms: three double, one double superior and one junior suite. All equipped with full bathroom, heating, air conditioning and splendid views. El Pontifical restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, combining the most traditional cuisine with innovative creations using top quality fresh ingredients. The Hotel offers many activities, such as walking, mountain biking or guided visits to the city of Alcalá de Henares.

On the Madrid leg of our recent vacation, we choose El Pontifical based on reviews here and on B&B websites. Using this small “Casa Rural” as a base for day trips to Madrid, Cuenca, Toledo and Alcala de Henares, we were well taken care of by Ms. Diaz, the owner. El Pontifical is a lovingly restored granary with 5 en suite rooms on the top floor, dining/breakfast room down one floor then a bar tucked into a basement “cavern”. After a long flight from the US, we arrived exhausted and jet lagged at 10 in the morning, expecting to drop our bags and explore the area until we could “check in”. We were told our room was ready and we were welcome to the breakfast laid out and coffee. Hot croissants every morning, my husband sooo looked forward to them each day. We had reserved a double standard room, but I think from the pictures, we were in the double superior. Our room, #4, queen poster bed, large double closet, desk and chair, flat screen TV, nice sized bath with shower, soaps, shampoo, shower gels, toothbrushes, hair dryer, small space heater, had a fabulous view; of the 5 rooms, #4, 5 and 2 will have the best views. The village Los Santos de la Humosa is perched on a hill 30 km east of the Madrid airport just off the A2 and is a great spot for hiking and biking, we were there early in the season so the fields weren’t as pretty as the brochures. A rental car is best to make the best use of your time and please bring maps and use a garmin type car navigation device. The village has many tight winding streets and Ms. Diaz has put up more signs for the hotel which is near the church at the top of the hill. El Pontifical serves lunch every day, but dinner only on Saturday; as we were out most of the day, we would eat before we returned. We would certainly recommend El Pontifical if you are looking for a quiet getaway, for a nature/athletic outing, or as we used it, for day trips in and around Madrid.

    The place is great!

We had in mind to explore Madrid and the surroundings and we did find the place is very well suited for that purpose. Having a car is the must - there is no other means of convenient transportation. The village itself is very small and quiet, but on the downside it's too "medieval" in the street "planning": turns are tricky and driveways narrow - so, watch you car, we did scratch our! El Pontifical itself is decorated beautifully inside-out, the views are breathtaking, the rooms are great, but the 'regular double room' was a little too small for our liking. The service was wonderfully unobtrusive but very attentive. The place is great!
