Merhaven Bed No Breakfast in Historic Downtown Charleston, South Carolina
The front entrance to the Innkeepers home at 16 Halsey Street. The entrance to the Merhaven rooms is located at the back of the residence, adjacent to the off-street parking, the courtyard, and gardens.
The Jasmine-lined entrance to Merhaven Bed no Breakfast. The entrance to your room is directly adjacent to the off-street parking area, up a well-lit, short set of stairs. The wooden gates lead you to a beautiful courtyard, amid the lush gardens, where guests are always welcome to relax.
A spacious courtyard, ajacent to the innkeepers art studio is a great place to visit with family and friends. One can enjoy an early morning coffee, a late afternoon glass of wine, reading a book, or taking a nap. The courtyard and gardens may also be rented for small receptions or gatherings.
The Jasmine Room: this spacious, light-filled room offers 1 Queen Bed and 1 Twin Daybed. A coffee maker, TV/DVD player, hairdryer, and iron are available in your room. Refrigerator available in the hallway.
The Cypress Room - this spacious, light-filled room offers 1 Queen Bed, 1 Twin Daybed, and 1 Trundle Bed (a pullout located under the Daybed). A coffee maker, TV/DVD player, hairdryer, and iron are available in your room. Refrigerator available in the hallway.
The secluded piazza is located in the lush gardens at Merhaven. Listen to the refreshing sound of an Italian-style fountain and numerous song birds while breathing in the sweet smell of confederate jasmine. Numerous banana, palm, and magnolia trees offer a truly Southern feel.
This 30' tall bannana tree grows in the garden at Merhaven. Over 12 species of birds frequent the gardens, and a wide variety of flowers and trees are in bloom year around, including limes, figs, and wisteria.
Merhaven, while being located in the heart of downtown Charleston, is a mere 20 minutes drive from three distinct, (yet all beautiful) beaches: Isle of Palms, Sulivan's Island, and Folley Beach.
Romantic sunset walks along the historic Battery or along your favorite beach are one of the many reasons so many people return to Charleston and to Merhaven again and again.

Stayed in Merhaven- the Jasmine Room- for one night prior to a continuing education seminar. My girlfriend and I lived in Charleston for a long time and take any reason to visit- we loved this place. Very cute room, very comfortable bed. Nice bathroom. Great location- easy walking distance to everything on the peninsula (the battery, shopping, coffeeshops,bars/restaurants). There were other people staying there but we didn't hear them or the Hursts at all- the house was really quiet. The coffee in the morning was delicious. We would definitely stay here again, much preferred to generic chain hotels. Thanks, Merhaven, for a great stay! I gave dining 5stars because dining in Charleston is five stars-no food at this place though. We'll be back!

My wife, 2 daughters, mother-in-law, and I stayed here for 5 nights in July 2012. Ayal's directions were very specific and we let ourselves in easily. There was free parking for our rental car. We reserved both rooms, so it was our own little suite. My wife, younger daughter, and I stayed in the Cypress room. My wife and I slept on the queen bed, which was very comfortable. We were afraid that our younger daughter was going to roll off her daybed, so we were happy that there is a pull out trundle bed under the daybed for the little one to use. The first 3 nights my older daughter slept on the twin bed and my mother-in-law slept on the queen bed in the Jasmine room. For a change of scenery on nights 4 and 5, my older daughter moved into the Cypress room with us and slept on the day bed. There was enough room for the four of us in the Cypress room. All the beds are comfy and both bedrooms and the bathroom are spotlessly clean. I enjoy drinking a cup of coffee in the mornings and that was provided (tea was also available). There is a Rite Aid one block away so we were able to pick cereal, milk, drinks, and detergent there. There is a coin operated laundry a few blocks away, so we were able to pack less clothes for our trip. There is a playground right across the street that our daughters greatly enjoyed. There is a small refrigerator with water in it you can purchase; we also put our milk and other cold drinks in there. The courtyard is spacious and gorgeous! Since this is a "Bed No Breakfast" meals are the guests' responsibility (hence the dining rating of 3 stars above). This was fine with us. Every morning we ate our cereal in the courtyard, in front of a beautiful fountain and nice wrought iron rocking chair. The hosts are very creative people. We enjoyed reading their books and admired their art. Finally, the price was very attractive compared to local alternatives! I highly recommend the Merhaven Bed No Breakfast. Matt and family

We loved our "Merhaven" stay. We arrived early and the innkeepers had the room ready for us. It was easy just to follow the directions and Ayal made sure that she welcomed us and asked us if we needed anything. The bed was comfortable, room clean and the courtyard was beautiful. The only downside is sharing a bathroom but we knew this in advance. It never presented as a problem. Downtown was within walking distance. Can't wait to go back. Rodney and Karen

4.2 out of 5Merhaven is a haven
June 27, 2012
Our stay at Merhaven was terrific. We rented out the Jasmine room, which was clean, cool, and tastefully decorated. The room itself though small is very comfortable. At this B+B you do share a bathroom with the other guest room, but timing was never an issue as the other family was up way before us and in bed before we returned each night. I loved the old, quaint feel of this place and felt very at home. The true beauty of this place lies in the garden that Ayal and Hawk have cultivated. Wow! Talk about a little sanctuary in the city! We sat outside on the patio at night, and lit a few of the many candles they had sitting around with a glass of wine... Heavenly! The banana plants lend an exotic atmosphere to the otherwise very Charleston garden. My only suggestion would be to bring foods that don't need heating (my only complaint was I couldn't heat left-overs. Take fruit, yogurt, etc- they do have a fridge for guests to use). It is a bed and no breakfast, so prepare to go out for meals. I loved my stay here and recommend it wholly.

The owners were welcoming, the space was clean and extremely comfortable - the outdoor garden and patio were an oasis! Highly recommend this BnB: off the beaten path, but close to all Charleston has to offer.
4.0 out of 5Merhaven - a lovely haven in a lovely city
April 17, 2012
Hawk and Ayal have created a lovely paradise on the edge of the historic district, a good location that provides peace and quiet but is close enough to enjoy the walk downtown. The rooms are clean and cheerfully decorated, the bed comfortable, and the garden gorgeous. Hawk is warm and friendly and accommodating (we didn't get to meet Ayal). It's definitely the best deal in town as their rate beat out every other one in the historic area. We will definitely stay there again and recommend it to our friends.
5 out of 5Magical and Relaxing !!!
April 15, 2012
My purpose of going to Merhaven was to learn how to make River Cane flutes from Hawk who is a Flute Player, Maker, and Storyteller. I spent a day in the workshop with him and the next day I had access to the workshop to see what I was able to do on my own. Hawk checked in on me from time to time and helped me if I needed it. He also let me have access to the workshop anytime during the day or night that I wanted to go in and create. He is a good teacher and shared a lot of information with me without hesitation and I was able to make five flutes while I was there. It was a great experience and being able to stay right there was a plus. If you are interested in learning how to make flutes I would recommend staying at least three or four days to take in all of the information and give yourself time to spend in the workshop. The courtyard is beautiful and magical and perfect for relaxing in the evening and great in the mornings when everything is waking up for the new day and there is even a magical Faerie Haven. Downtown is just a short walk away and offers oodles of things to do and places to eat. Hawk and Ayal are super people and respect your privacy and go above and beyond to make it feel like home for you. I left with two new friends and some beautiful flutes. The whole trip was a wonderful experience for me. Angel
