Is the Grand Canyon grand? You bet it is, but be sure to allow time to experience northern Arizona's many other attractions, from dramatic rock formations to ancient Indian cliff dwellings to wonderful museums. Some of the country's best B&Bs, too.

The toughest part about a visit to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains is deciding what to do first: hiking, bicycling, boating, fishing, golf, white water rafting, or horseback riding in warm weather; downhill and cross-country skiing when the snow flies.

Choosing the right inn
It's hard to make up rules about inns, because it's their individuality that makes them special. In general, we look for inns that are:
| 1. |
Owner-operated: No one gives better advice about the area or can deal with problems quicker than a resident owner/innkeeper. |
| 2. |
Value: Whether you're paying $100 a night or $500, you want to feel like you're getting your money's worth. |
| 3. |
Distinctiveness: Unlike motel chains which advertise "no surprises" the best B&Bs are a delicious balance of the personal warmth of the innkeepers, the style and comfort of their inn, and the appeal of the setting itself. |
| 4. |
Appropriateness: If you want a romantic getaway, don't select an inn which caters to families; if it's a family vacation, make sure kids are welcomed with age-appropriate facilities and activities. |
| 5. |
Personal style: Call innkeepers and check out their Web sites to see if their style and yours are a good fit. If Victorian-style decor makes you twitch, look for a place that's clutter-free. |
