Question:  Can you suggest some ghostly getaways and haunting happenings for Halloween?

Answer:  We asked BedandBreakfast.com's members to tell us about their "rooms with a boo" and here are some great choices. Certain programs are offered year-round, others just in October; advance reservations usually required. For more information, check BedandBreakfast.com's specials, or contact the inns directly for details, current dates (many events are offered annually), and availability.

Northeast

Captain Grant's Inn, Poquetanuck, CT: Visitors to this 1754 inn may hear loud knocking at the door -- but no one is ever there. Guests in the Adelaide Room may have some contact with the mysterious family who once lived there, perhaps the TV turning on and off or the shower curtain falling down. Visit on Halloween, and you'll be treated to tours through two local cemeteries, followed by hot apple cider and ghost stories.
Beechwood Inn, Barnstable, Cape Cod, MA: The "Mischievous Lady" who lives here has been seen, and has even talked to the innkeepers and certain guests. Visit Oct. 18th, and combine your stay with a ghost tour lead by Haunted Inns of New England author Mark Jasper.
Addison Choate Inn , Rockport, Cape Ann, MA: Tour the Salem Witch Museum, visit Gallows' Hill and join thousands of others for the biggest Halloween costume party around. Midweek visitors get a free round-trip train ticket so the traffic won't "spook" them.
Angel of the Mountains, Bethlehem, NH: A regular weekend feature at this B&B is the "Mystery Lantern Walk." Guests are led through the village, the leading summer resort in America a century ago. "Isaac Cruft," who owned the biggest hotel in town in 1900, leads the way, dressed in period clothing. He tells the ghost stories, legends, lore and history of Bethlehem. A favorite ghost story is about the girl in the red dress, whose ghost still roams the halls of an old hotel, looking for her lost love.
Sunset Hill House, Sugar Hill, NH: Murder Inn Grand Style reigns supreme the last weekend of October, as guests become detectives, murderers and victims in the annual Murder Mystery Party at Sunset Hill House.
Edward Harris House Inn, Rochester, NY: This 1896 B&B is a relaxing place for a Rochester visit, which may explain why the ghostly "Captain" never left! Innkeeper Susan Alvarez reports that "dressed in what appears to be Spanish-American war era garb, he's been seen or heard many times. The Captain's latest prank is to remove a spoon from the dining room table at night."
Catamount B&B, Williston, VT: The home of Vermont's first governor, Catamount B&B is still inhabited by a host of friendly spirits. While ghostly encounters are not guaranteed, you can count on enjoying the Haunted Forest, offered Oct. 23 - 27. This extraordinary event combines outdoor theater, special effects, and the magic of the night forest!

South

Empress of Little Rock, Little Rock, AR: Attend a 19th century séance with Damon Reinbold, 21st century wizard, who brings to life spirits of the past. Available Oct. 25-26, Nov. 1-2, 8- 9.
Washington Street Inn, Key West, FL: The theme of this year's town-wide Fantasy Fest (Oct 18-27) is Mystical Mornings, Monsterious Nights, includes Pet Masquerades, a toga party, homemade bikini contests, the headdress ball, and a street promenade, all culminating in a huge float parade. Inn guests are provided with sheets for togas and Fantasy Fest Beads.
Centennial House, St. Augustine, FL: Sign up for a haunted weekend, October 18-19th or 25-26th, and shiver at a horsedrawn ghost ride, a ghost spirits walking tour, and a ghost cruise.
Gratz Park Inn, Lexington, KY: Perhaps it's because the Lexington City morgue was once in this building's basement, but guests have been known to awake to ghostly men in their rooms, or intoxicated apparitions in the hallway. Don't be surprised if you encounter a diaphanous lady in a white dress and hat.
Katherine's Bed and Breakfast, Asheville, NC: Grace, the former owner's great-grandmother who died at the inn, is a friendly apparition, who just can't get enough good loving, today or in her past life. By the way, wherever Grace goes, her dog follows. Ever heard of a tail-wagging ghost?
Applegate Inn, Dillsboro, NC: Spice up your overnight with a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railway, next door to the inn. On the evenings of October 25th 27, 28, and 29, the Halloween Special Mystery Theatre Dinner Trains promise dastardly doings.
Prospect Hill Bed & Breakfast, Mountain City, TN: You may glimpse a shadow disappearing around the corner, startle to a baby's distinctive cry, hear the creak of firm leather shoes on the stairs, or notice a door slamming. Perhaps it's the spirits of families who've dwelled here in the past, perhaps it's just your imagination.
Arcorn Inn, Marfa, TX. Enjoy touring this artists' town on the inn's bicycles, plus delicious breakfasts, afternoon tea, and dinner in the Lima Room, known to ghost hunters as Emmeline's room. Local legend recounts that young Emmeline was killed a century ago in a riding accident. She did not realize that she had passed on, so she's returned home.

Midwest & Great Lakes

Cool Breeze Bed & Breakfast, Evansville, IN: While chatting with innkeeper David Hills, a guest told him that she had seen an elderly couple appear and disappear several times. Looking over his shoulder, David saw nothing, but felt the hairs on his neck tingle. (Or was it just a "cool breeze?"
Inn at Cedar Falls, Logan, OH: Join the Halloween Cookout, starting with a pumpkin-carving contest, followed by dinner outdoors and singing around the campfire. The contest winner receives a $25 gift certificate toward his/her next stay.

Western U.S.

Snowball Mansion , Knights Landing, CA: You'll learn more about the inn's friendly phantoms when they're featured on the Travel Channel's "Haunted Bed and Breakfast Inns" Halloween week. Better yet, book a room and you may encounter the late Lucy Snowball as she roams the hallways.
Glenwood Springs Victorian B&B , Glenwood Springs, CO: Enjoy a Ghostly Weekend with accommodations, plus a cemetery Ghost Walk where you'll meet the notorious costumed characters and the ghosts that reside there.
Two Sisters Inn, Manitou Springs, CO: Stay Oct. 25-26, and experience "Grave Undertakings", the Manitou Springs Cemetery Walking Tour; then cheer on the entrants in the Saturday Coffin Races, and conclude the evening a Ghostly Walking Tour of Manitou Springs.
