Family Getaways
You love inngoing, and have decided the kids are ready to try it too. Here's how to choose inns that the whole family will enjoy.
A convenient location. Choose an inn with plenty of activities for good weather and bad--sand castles to build, boats to row, mountains to climb, farm animals to feed, horses to ride, museums and aquariums to visit.
Appropriate accommodations. A family suite or cabin will give you extra space and privacy, so the kids' lack of "volume control" won't disturb others.
Food. Hungry children are cranky children. Find innkeepers who understand that kids prefer Cocoa Puffs and teddy bear pancakes to pecan muffins and eggs Benedict. Ask about a refrigerator to store snacks.
Family-friendly furnishings. Combine museum-quality antiques with young children for guaranteed stress. Teach your kids to respect property, but choose accommodations with sturdy, comfortable, indestructible furnishings.
Welcoming atmosphere. Choose inns where children are truly appreciated. Signs of welcome include lower rates for accommodation and food; games, puzzles, outdoor play equipment, cribs and even special children's programs and/or baby-sitters. An extra plus for children is making new friends among the other young guests.
